Ardell O. Steen
Ardell O. Steen, 67, Ventura, Calif., formerly of Grand Forks, died July 27, 1998.
Ardell O. Steen was born March 15, 1931, the son of Olger and Florance (Crawford) Steen, in Grand Forks. He married Leatrice "Lee" Fayette in November 1950. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1951. They moved to Ventura, where they lived since.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Sharyl Burke, Floranne Pillado, and Lori Walker, all of California; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a sister, Bonnie, PeEll, Wash.; and brothers, Donald, Grand Forks, Larry, Huntington Beach, Calif., and Roger, Ventura.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Charles, Lakewood, Calif.
Pearl Thompson Henry
ROLLA, N.D. -- Pearl Thompson Henry, 88, Rolla, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, in Belcourt (N.D.) Hospital.
Pearl Thompson was born March 28, 1910, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Larson) Thompson, in Wolford, N.D. She attended school in the Wolford-Pleasant Lake area. She worked as a cook in the dietary department at the Rugby (N.D.) Hospital. She married Oscar Davidson. She married Phillip Henry on Dec. 6, 1940, in Langdon, N.D. They lived and farmed in the Starkweather, N.D. area. They moved to St. John, N.D. They retired in Rolla and later moved to Cando, N.D. Phillip Henry died Aug. 23, 1977. She returned to Rolla.
She is survived by sons, Duane (Alice), Rolla, Terry (Arlis), Langdon, Clarence (Arlene), Nova, Ohio, and Noel (Linda) Davidson, Deer Lodge, Mont.; a daughter, Sharon (Richard) Laverdure, Belcourt; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lula Rinas, Cando, and Bernice Jackson, Devils Lake; and sisters-in-law, Marie Jeanotte, Rolla, Gladys Henry, Rolette, N.D., Gladys Berg, Grand Forks, and Ann Henry, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by two grandchildren; brothers, Marvin, Benny, Selmer and Palmer; and a sister, Myrtle.
Services: 2 p.m. today, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rolla.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Rolla Cemetery (Niewoehner, Rolla).
Edward Raffenbeul
LANGDON, N.D. -- Edward Raffenbeul, 80, Langdon, formerly of Dresden, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in Maple Manor Care Center, Langdon.
Edward Raffenbeul was born April 30, 1918, the son of Henry and Anna (Buchweitz) Raffenbeul, in Dresden. He lived and farmed in the Dresden area. He married Eleanor Hotten on Dec. 12, 1946, in Langdon. They moved to Langdon in 1972.
He is survived by his wife; and a brother, Otto, Long Beach, Calif.
He was preceded in death by brothers, William and Richard; and a sister, Margaret Holtz.
Services: 10 a.m. today, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Langdon (Brooks, Langdon).
Edward Raffenbeul
LANGDON, N.D. -- Edward Raffenbeul, 80, Langdon, formerly of Dresden, N.D., died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in Maple Manor Care Center, Langdon.

George F. Hayes
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- George F. Hayes, 83, Thief River Falls, died Wednesday Sept. 2, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
George Franklin Hayes was born Feb. 19, 1915, the son of John and Julia (Shaw) Hayes, in Doyon, N.D. He moved with his family to Warren, Minn., where he attended school. He married Clairebel Doris Erickson on Sept. 6, 1935, in Northhome, Minn. They lived in Big Falls, Minn., from 1935 to 1944, when they moved to Thief River Falls. He worked at Eddy's Bread Co., Kiewel's Bottling and in trucking for more than 50 years. He retired in 1990.
He is survived by his wife; a son, James, Thief River Falls; a daughter, Cleo Busbee, Huntington Beach, Calif.; three granddaughters; and a brother, Eugene "Gene" (Madge) Percy, Big Falls, Minn.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Gerken and Blanche Rose; and brothers, Edward and Ambrose.
Services: 2: 30 p.m. Tuesday, Zion Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 8 a.m. to noon, Monday, in Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
John J. Postier
HOOPLE, N.D. -- John J. Postier, 80, Hoople, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River, N.D.
John J. Postier was born Feb. 15, 1918, the son of George and Betty (Jansen) Postier, in Jansen, Sask. He grew up and attended school in Clearbrook, Minn. He then drove semi trucks. He married Maxine Legg on Dec. 16, 1945. They lived in Park River, Homestead, Fla., St. Thomas, N.D., and in 1955 they moved to Hoople. He drove mail from 1968 until retiring in 1994. Maxine Postier died June 6, 1994.
He is survived by daughters, Elaine (Richard) Thompson, Grafton, N.D., Gail Melland, Drayton, N.D., and Betty (Russell) Crowder, Hoople; a son, Dean (Valerie), Fort Smith, Ark.; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Graydon (Sophie), Clearbrook, Minn.; and a sister, Amy (Robert) McQuillan, Turtle Lake, Wis.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Maxwell; and a sister, Erna Staples.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Hoople.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Hoople City Cemetery.
Thelma E. Johnson
BEMIDJI -- Thelma E. Johnson, 89, Bemidji, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, at home.
Thelma Edith Thorsen was born June 18, 1909, the daughter of Thom and Jandine (Johnson) Thorsen, in Winnebago, Iowa. She moved to Bemidji, where she graduated from high school. She returned to Iowa. She married Daniel Johnson on June 4, 1937, in Iowa. They moved to Bemidji and later to Thompson, Iowa. They lived in Lignite, N.D., for 13 years before returning to Bemidji in 1953. She was the co owner of Sally's Yarn Shop in the late 1950s. Daniel Johnson died in 1964. During the 1970s to the 1990s, she owned and operated Great River Knit Shop.
She is survived by daughters, Janice Kay Rein, Waite Park, Minn., and Ann (Bruce) Piersol, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; sons, Donald (Marjorie), and Keith (Julie), both of Bemidji, and Steven (Christine), Becida, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janice (Bert) Johnson, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Oscar and Albert.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Wednesday, in Becida (Minn.) Community Church.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Fern Township Cemetery, Becida. Memorials are suggested to North Country Home Care and Hospice.
Helen E. Zuelow
BEMIDJI -- Helen E. Zuelow, 82, Bemidji, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Helen Elizabeth Dodge was born April 22, 1916, the daughter of William and Anna (Aaberg) Dodge, in Bemidji, where she graduated from high school in 1934. She worked at the Irish Grocery store for several years. She married Edmund Zuelow on Feb. 18, 1939. She lived in Arizona, returning to Bemidji in 1950. She worked at Markham Hotel in the 1960s and '70s. Edmund Zuelow died Aug. 17, 1985.
She is survived by a son, James, Pearce-Sunsites, Ariz.; two grandchildren; a brother, Ervin, Poland, Ind., and a sister, E. Leona Morton, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, First Lutheran Church, Bemidji.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to First Lutheran Church, Bemidji, or to church or charity of choice. (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Nellie Borchardt
THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Nellie Borchardt, 81, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Nellie Margaret Arnevick was born Sept. 9, 1916, the daughter of Andrew and Olga (Nelson) Arnevick, in Holt, Minn., where she attended school. She worked in several jobs around Northwest Minnesota. She married Axel Bloom in 1936. He preceded her in death. She married Fred "Fritz" Borchardt on Dec. 13, 1952. She worked in housekeeping at Oakland Park Nursing Home. Fred Borchardt died in June of 1970. She lived in Thief River Falls.
She is survived by a daughter, Ardell (Harold) Warner, Duluth; three grandchildren; and a sister, Gina Rux, Thief River Falls.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John; and a sister, Alma Staskivige.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 9 a.m. until time of services in the funeral home.
Burial: Holt cemetery.
Ellen E. Braman
BEMIDJI -- Ellen E. Braman, 59, Bemidji, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Ellen Eileen Smith was born Jan. 25, 1939, the daughter of Harvey and Agnes (Cross) Smith, in Bemidji. She attended school in Puposky, Minn., where she lived until 1955. She married Kenneth Braman on Dec. 22, 1955, in Bemidji, where they had lived since. Kenneth Braman died Sept. 20, 1986.
She is survived by daughters, Sandra (Steve) Johnson, Sharon (Mike Murphy) Braman, and Debra Pierce, all of Bemidji; brothers, Charles and Vernon, both of Puposky; and sisters, Marie Gaarsland, Willmar, Minn., and Edna (Art) Hovde, Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kenneth; and sisters, Roberta and Evelyn.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Tuesday, in Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
