Wallace 'Wally' Indahl
BEMIDJI -- Wallace "Wally" Indahl, 80, Bemidji, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at home, following a series of heart complications.
Wallace Luverne Indahl was born May 30, 1918, the son of William and Inga (Halverson) Indahl, in Erskine, Minn. He worked as a Minnesota State Highway Trooper for 20 years and retired in the early 1970s.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Indahl, Bemidji; daughters, Mary (Lee) Moeglein, Wasilla, Alaska, Julianne (James) Rodorigo, Mountain Iron, Minn., and Kathleen (Daniel) Pratt, Marysville, Wash.; sons, Stephen (Marcia), Anchorage, Alaska, and Charles, Louisville, Ky.; his first wife, Luella Indahl, Anchorage; stepdaughters, Norma Finely, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Donna Sievert, Lamessa, Calif.; stepsons, Ed (Anne) Exline, Charles City, Iowa, and Jim (Darlene) Exline, Golden, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; a step-great-great-grandson; and a brother, Irving, Fertile, Minn.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold; and a granddaughter.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Evangelical Covenant Church, Bemidji.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Erskine (Olson-Schwartz, Bemidji).
Clara Overby
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Clara Overby, 84, Cooperstown, died Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in Griggs County Nursing Home, Cooperstown, where she had lived since October 1997.
Clara Nelson was born Jan. 23, 1915, the daughter of Bernt "Ben" and Sigrid "Sarah" (Larson) Overby, in Binford, N.D., where she attended school. She married Theodore Nelson on Sept. 16, 1936, in Binford, N.D. They farmed in Luverne, N.D., until 1950, when they moved to Cooperstown. Theodore Nelson died Feb. 19, 1962. She married Edward Wells on July 28, 1972. They made their home in Cooperstown.
She is survived by daughters, Joyce (David) Voldal, Poway, Calif., Mavis (Louis) Thibodeaux, Houma, La., Marilyn (Ronald) Johnson, Parkville, Mo., and Dianne (Michael) Forcier, Fargo; five step-children; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Alma Watne, Binford; and a brother, Albin, Libby, Mont.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.
Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. today, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Cooperstown Cemetery. Memorials are suggested in Clara's name to the Griggs County Nursing Home Association or Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown.
Edith Askew
NECHE, N.D. -- Edith Askew, 102, Neche, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Wedgewood Manor, Cavalier, N.D., where she had lived since August 1994.
Edith Young was born March 27, 1896, the daughter of Edwin and Jennie (Campbell) Young, in Harvey, N.D. The family moved to Neche in 1900, where she attended school. She worked for Dr. Demorest and the telephone office in Neche. She moved to Minneapolis, where she was a housemaid and worked in a hospital kitchen. She married Peter Barney in 1925, in Two Harbors, Minn. They lived in Meadowlands and Melrude, Minn., where they logged and operated a truck garden. Peter Barney died in 1951. She returned to Neche in 1952 to care for her stepmother, Mary Wenholz Young. She married Arthur Askew on Feb. 16, 1956, in Leonard, N.D. They lived on a farm in Neche until moving into Neche. Arthur Askew died Jan. 24, 1982. In November 1992, she moved to Pioneer Rest Home, Bathgate, N.D.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Ruby Williams and Florence Costello; and brothers, Roy, Harold and Earl.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Neche United Methodist Church.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Neche Union Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Neche Methodist Church or Wedgewood Manor.
Sister Julia Brick
CROOKSTON -- Sister Julia Brick, 94, Crookston, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in the Health Care Center at Mount St. Benedict Monastery, where she had lived since 1995.
Barbara Brick was born Jan. 24, 1905, the daughter of Michael and Margaret (Schmitz) Brick, in Park Rapids, Minn., where she attended school. She joined the Benedictine Sisters of Crookston in 1922. As Sister Julia, she made her vow of commitment in 1924. She directed the domestic service in the parish convents of East Grand Forks, Moorhead, Crookston, Red Lake Falls, Minn., and St. Vincent Hospital, the House of Studies in St. Paul and the summer migrant programs in Crookston and Moorhead. After 1972, she cooked in the parish rectories of East Grand Forks and Moorhead. She retired in 1983, when she returned to Mount St. Benedict Monastery.
She is survived by a sister, Sister Joanne Brick, Mount St. Benedict.
She was preceded in death by seven sisters; and three brothers.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Mount St. Benedict Monastery.
Visitation: 4: 30 to 8 p.m. today, with a 4: 30 p.m. prayer service, Sacred Heart Chapel of Mount St. Benedict Monastery.
Burial: Mount St. Benedict Cemetery (Stenshoel-Houske, Crookston).
Frank Allen
McVILLE, N.D. -- Frank Allen, 93, McVille, formerly of Tolna, N.D., died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Nelson County Health System-Care Center, McVille, where he had lived since June 23, 1994.
Frank Allen was born April 23, 1905, the son of Steve and Lillie (Fitch) Allen, in Tolna, where he attended school. He worked his entire life as a farm laborer in Tolna.
He is survived by nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Stanley-Iverson Funeral Home, McVille.
Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Ottofy Cemetery, Tolna.
Carl A. Davidson
DEVILS LAKE -- Carl A. Davidson, 87, Devils Lake, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Carl A. Davidson was born Feb. 11, 1911, the son of Andrew and Johanna Davidson, in Devils Lake, where he attended school. He married Mae Sagvang on Feb. 1, 1932, in Devils Lake. He worked for the Devils Lake Daily Journal until moving to Hammond, Ind., where he continued as a printer. He retired in 1962. He returned to Devils Lake.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Dale, Devils Lake; a daughter, Pat Crawford, Hammond; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian Olson, Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Hans, Thurban, William and David.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake.
Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to time of services Friday in the chapel.
Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.
Laura McFarlane
LANGDON, N.D. -- Laura McFarlane, 97, Bismarck, formerly of Langdon, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in Baptist Care Home, Bismarck.
Laura McFarlane was born July 12, 1901, the daughter of Alexander and Laura (Dunford) McFarlane, in Harvey Township, Cavalier County, N.D., where she attended school. She worked with Marie Mathieu learning dressmaking. She later was self-employed in Devils Lake as a dressmaker. She worked as a domestic in Bismarck.
She is survived by sisters, Elsie Sussex, Hatton, N.D., and Ada McDonald and Bessie Field, both of Langdon; and a brother, John (Ann), Langdon.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Emily McFarlane; and brothers, Harvey and Robert.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon.
Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today and one hour before services in the funeral home.
Burial: Harvey Center Cemetery, Langdon.
Raymond J. Nibbe Sr.
BEMIDJI -- Raymond J. Nibbe Sr., 66, Bemidji, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, in North Country Regional Hospital, Bemidji.
Raymond Jesse Nibbe was born July 21, 1932, the son of Clarence and Wilma (Kimman) Nibbe, in St. James, Minn. He joined the U.S. Army. He married Barbara Jean McInville on April 1, 1951, in Bennetsville, S.C. He finished his tour of duty after 20 years of service in 1968. They moved to Bemidji. He worked for the State of Minnesota and as a liquor control agent. He retired in 1988. Barbara Nibbe died March 25, 1998.
He is survived by daughters, Joanne (Charles) Bennington, Bemidji, and Sandra Larson, Corcoran, Minn.; sons, Raymond Jr. and Ronald Sr., both of Bemidji; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter; and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Nibbe.
Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.
C. Lawrence Higdem
PORTLAND, N.D. -- C. Lawrence Higdem, 74, Portland, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Calmer Lawrence Higdem was born Nov. 23, 1923, the son of Carl and Lisa (Hagen) Higdem, in Golden Lake Township, Steele County, N.D. He grew up and attended school in Portland. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945. He married Alice Thuen on Jan. 4, 1948, in Portland. He worked at Haugom Hardware, Portland, later purchasing and operating it as Higdem and Thuen Hardware for 5 years. He later worked for Mayville-Portland school as head custodian for 17 years. He retired in 1987.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Linda (Robert) Godejohn, Williston, and Diane (Truman) Ulland, Mayville; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brothers, Irvin (Beatrice), Portland, Joseph (Mary), Wheatland, Wyo., Maynard, Oakland, Calif., and Richard, Elgin, N.D.; and sisters, Irene Lidstrom, and Judy (Richard) Beck, both of Portland, and Lorraine (Allan) Strom, Graham, Wash.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Theodore and Robert.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland, N.D.
Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, and one hour before services in the church.

Raymond R. Nelson
PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Raymond R. Nelson, 84, Park River, formerly of Norma, N.D., died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in St. Ansgar's Health Center, Park River.
Raymond R. Nelson was born Feb. 27, 1914, the son of Frank and Julia (Mattern) Nelson, in Norma, where he attended school. He married Arlene Anderson on Feb. 27, 1934, in Kenmare, N.D. They lived and farmed in Norma. He owned a construction business and in 1952, he went into partnership with Clair Olney, doing graveling and construction work. In 1963, they moved to Park River, where he owned and operated a trucking business. He retired in 1985. Arlene Nelson died July 17, 1980. He married Joyce Johnston on Sept. 20, 1982, in Coeur D'alene, Idaho. They lived in Park River.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Duane (Betty), Gainesville, Ga., and Robert, Thief River Falls; daughters, Bev (Everett) Peterson, Mohall, N.D., and Karen Johnson, Kansas City, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nine stepchildren; and several stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy; a brother, Ed; and a daughter-in-law, Sandy.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, and 1 p.m. Sunday, Trinity Lutheran Church, Kenmare.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today and one hour before services in the funeral home, and one hour before services Sunday in the church.
Burial: Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.
Stanley Stokka
COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Stanley Stokka, 85, Cooperstown, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, in Hannaford, N.D.
Stanley Stokka was born Jan. 7, 1913, the son of Bernard and Selina (Loge) Stokka, near Cooperstown, where he attended school. He farmed east of Hannaford. He married Shirley Pollack on Feb. 24, 1968, in Valley City, N.D. He was living on a farm in Hannaford.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Tracie, Fort Worth, Texas; a stepson, Terry (Sandie) Pollack; two stepgrandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Gordon (Joyce), Fargo; and sisters, Doris Erickson, Cooperstown, Agnes Jensen, Fargo, and Helen (Dick) Hess, Lakehurst, N.J.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Saron Evangelical Free Church, Cooperstown.
Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. today, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.
