Grace Johnson

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Grace Johnson, 66, Thief River Falls, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center Convalescent Nursing Care Unit, Thief River Falls.

Grace Pauline Hamberg was born Nov. 2, 1931, the daughter of Jons and Gunda (Nelson) Hamberg, in Strandquist, Minn. She graduated from Karlstad (Minn.) High School. She moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a secretary to a senator. She then returned to the Stephen, Minn., area. She married Kenneth Larson in 1961, in Stephen. They lived in Gardner, N.D. She later married Larry Johnson in 1975. They lived in various places including Colorado Springs, Colo. She returned to Thief River Falls in 1981. She had been working at the public library.

She is survived by a son, John (Susan) Larson, Wahpeton, N.D.; daughters, Carol (Daniel) Running, Newport News, Va., and Nancy (David) Brustad, Devils Lake; six grandchildren; a brother, Roy (Lorraine), Battle Lake, Minn.; and sisters, Nan Hamberg and Verna (Orville) Hvidsten, both of Thief River Falls, and Ruby Jensen and Ann (Dutch) Merdink, both of Stephen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter; brothers, Nels and Harry; and a sister, Blenda Hamberg.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Salem Cemetery, Stephen.

Tilford Avdem

PEKIN, N.D. -- Tilford Avdem, 75, Pekin, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, in a Jamestown Hospital.

Tilford Harding Avdem was born Nov. 8, 1922, the son of Andrew and Mabel (Ensrud) Avdem, in Pekin, where he attended school. He married Vivian Larson on June 23, 1946, in Binford, N.D. They lived near Binford before moving to a farm south of Pekin. They farmed and operated a dairy until 1967. They moved into Pekin in 1968. He worked for the North Dakota State Highway Department for 21 years, retiring on Oct. 31, 1988. He hobby-farmed and raised cattle and sheep.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Terrance "Terry" (Tena), Jeff, and Duane (Kayte), all of Pekin, Michael (LueAnn), Peyton, Colo, Keith (Lisa), Thornton, Colo. and Roland (Vicki), Michigan, N.D.; daughters, Pat (Dan Jr.) Oien, Binford and Pam (Arnie) Rosecrans, Bottineau, N.D.; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Marcella Thorson.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Pekin Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, in Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Pekin Cemetery.

August F. Sommerfeld

NORTHWOOD, N.D. -- August F. Sommerfeld, 86, Northwood, formerly of Michigan, N.D., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, in Northwood Deaconess Health Center.

August F. Sommerfeld was born July 30, 1912 the son of Julius and Emilie (Behnke) Sommerfeld Sr., in Michigan, where he attended school. He married Catherine Mae Talbot on Oct. 27, 1937, in Niagara, N.D. They farmed in the Michigan area before purchasing a farm in Center Township, Nelson County, N.D., in 1952. He also worked for Lamb Bros. in Michigan for 25 years until retiring. They moved to Grand Forks in 1996.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Gary (Gay), Grand Forks; brothers, Gad (Gladys), Grand Forks, and Benjamin and Julius Jr., both of Michigan; and a sister, Sophie Dwyer, Stewart, Minn.

He was preceded in death by brothers, William, Harold, and Henry; and sisters, Ida Studley, Bertha Andrews, and Minnie Whoeler.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Zion Lutheran Church, Michigan.

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.

Burial: Michigan Cemetery (Aaker, Lakota, N.D.).

Joseph B. Horski

Joseph B. Horski, 80, 616 University Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998, at home.

Joseph Bernard Horski was born March 3, 1918, the son of Stanley and Helen (Kruetovich) Horski, Warsaw, N.D. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 10, 1941 to June 23, 1945, during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star. After his discharge, he moved to Grand Forks, where he served in the National Guard. He worked at Whitey's in East Grand Forks for 17 years. He married Lorraine Scully on July 31, 1952, in Grand Forks. He worked for several contractors, including Morrison-Knutson and Northern Construction. He retired in 1980.

He is survived by his wife; sons, James (Janis), East Pointe, Mich., and Timothy (Mary), Fargo; a daughter, Pat (Dan) Wride, Grand Forks; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Stanley, North Attleboro, Mass.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard; and a sister, Caroline Walsh.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with a 5 p.m. prayer service, Norman Funeral Home, Columbia Road, Grand Forks.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.

Thora Lund

MOUNTAIN, N.D. -- Thora Lund, 86, Waseca, Minn., formerly of Mountain, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in the Waterville Good Samaritan Center.

Thora Johnson was born April 3, 1912, the daughter of Svienn and Krisjana (Christianson) Johnson, in Mountain. She graduated from high school in Milton, N.D., and from Jamestown Teacher's College. She taught in Hazen, N.D. She married the Rev. Earl Lund on July 14, 1942, in Mountain. In 1944, they moved to ||003 . 0000.00||Mobile, Ala., where she taught. They moved to Wyndmere, N.D., and Larimore, N.D. In 1970, they moved to Hayward, Minn. She worked at St. John's Nursing Home in Albert Lea, Minn., before moving to Waseca in 1997. The Rev. Earl Lund died Jan. 15, 1998.

She is survived by a son, John (Marilyn), Marshall; daughters, Naomi (Greg) Easton, Naples, Italy, and Deborah (Terry) VanderHorst, Waseca; seven grandchildren; a sister, Esther Hillman, Cavalier, N.D.; a brother, G.T. (Lillian), Fergus Falls, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Lillian Lund, Brookings, S.D.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Services: 11 a.m., today, Hayward Lutheran Church (Kinder-Dennis, Waseca).

Jean M. Fossell

DRAYTON, N.D. -- Jean M. Fossell, Minneapolis, formerly of Drayton, died Oct. 15, 1998, in Fairview University Medical Center, Minneapolis.

Jean M. Fossell was born the daughter of Roy and Freda (Bogestad) Fossell, in Drayton. She attended school in Kennedy, Minn., and graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead. She worked as a music teacher for 26 years in the St. Paul Public Schools.

She is survived by her parents; sisters, Janice (Bruce) Gilbertson and Judy (Jude) Gardner; and a brother, Ronald (Lana).

Services: Sunday, St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Mahtomedi, Minn., and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Kennedy (Minn.) Covenant Church.

Burial: Juniper Cemetery, Kennedy. Memorials are suggested to the National Lutheran Choir, P.O. Box 6450, Minneapolis, Minn. 55406, or Kennedy Covenant Church, Kennedy, Minn. (Gill Brothers Funeral Home).

Willard E. Solberg

GILBY, N.D. -- Willard E. Solberg, 86, Bismarck, formerly of Gilby, died Tuesday, Oct. 13, 1998, in a Bismarck Hospital.

Willard E. Solberg was born March 7, 1912, the son of Peder and Mabel (Oakland) Solberg, in Fairdale, N.D. He attended school in Buxton, N.D. He moved with his family to Gilby, where he graduated from high school. He attended Mayville (N.D.) State College, where he received a standard diploma and teaching certificate in 1931. He taught and coached for several years. He attended Minot State University, where he received a bachelor's degree. He earned his master's degree in administration at Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colo. During his 48 years in education, he served 20 years as a coach and teacher and 28 years as a school administrator. He taught schools in Fairdale, Lankin, Hunter, Starkweather, Valley City, Hettinger, Bowman and Beulah, N.D.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Holt, Grafton; a son, Charles Maynard, Welches, Ore.; a daughter, Sharon (Dan) Dudley, Lemon Cove, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Claudia Middleton, Gilby; and a brother, Paul, Milltown, Wis.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Will be private. (Bismarck Funeral Home).

Mary M. Avery

EASBY, N.D. -- Mary M. Avery, 75, Milwaukee, formerly of Easby, died July 18, 1998, in Milwaukee.

Mary Krom was born Sept. 18, 1923, the daughter of John Land and Rose Krom, in Easby, where she attended school. She moved to Milwaukee in 1947. She married Marshall Avery in Milwaukee.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Becky (Bob) Nelson, Milwaukee; a brother, Joe (Tootie) Washebeck, Oshkosh, Wis.; and sisters, Sister Geraldine Krom, Fargo, Lillian (Allan) Doxrud, Sparta, Wis., and Rose (Allan) Hooey, Lakota, N.D.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth; and brothers, Jake, Walter, Edward and Ralph.

Services: Were held in Milwaukee, with a burial service at 11 a.m. Oct. 24 in Lakota Cemetery.

Frank Houser

PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Frank Houser, 77, Park River, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Frank R. Houser was born Feb. 6, 1921, the son of John and Rose (Zikmund) Houser, in Vesta Township, Walsh County, N.D. He grew up and lived in Adams, N.D. He attended WCAS in Park River from 1937 to 1938, and took mechanics, carpentry, blacksmithing and shop classes. He returned home and began working for Olaf Larson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from July 1942 to October 1946. He began working for Clarence Lien in January of 1947, and later for Jim Larson at Larson Chevrolet. He married Margaret Pic on July 10, 1947. He retired in April 1991.

He is survived by his wife; children, Ronnie (Lynda) and Darlene (Cledith) Carlson, both of Park River, N.D.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter; brothers, Henry, Jerome and Augustine; and a sister, Agnes Praska.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Park River.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Henriksen-Overbye Funeral Home, Park River, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Military Rites: Paul Farup American Legion Post of Park River.

Richard H. Drake

Richard H. Drake, 41, Dilworth, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at home of natural causes.

Richard Henry Drake was born July 1, 1957, the son of Dale and Inez (Kjelsberg) Drake, in Grand Forks, where he graduated from high school in 1975. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He is survived by a son, Derek, Northwood, N.D.; a daughter, Desiree Christensen, Hutchinson, Minn.; his parents; brothers, Jon, Burlington, Vt., and Butch, Grand Forks; and a sister, Sara Jane Witte, Green River, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Michael; and his grandparents.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, University Lutheran Church, Grand Forks, and 10 a.m. Monday, Sunnywood Garden Cemetery, Grand Forks.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Sunnywood Gardens Cemetery (Amundson, Grand Forks).

Minda T. Storaker

Minda T. Storaker, 89, 429 Belmont Road, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Center, Crookston.

Minda Hassell was born July 25, 1909, the daughter of August and Olena (Thorslund) Hassell, in Tolna, N.D. She attended school in Tolna and McVille and graduated from high school in Niagara, N.D. She lived in Larimore, N.D., and Sauk Center, Minn., before returning to Larimore. She married Jim Storaker on June 23, 1932, in Larimore. They lived in El Paso, Texas, Riverside, Calif., and Gainesville, Texas. She lived in Kempton, N.D., and Larimore, before moving to Grand Forks in 1946.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Ron (Nancy), Sheboygan, Wis.; a daughter, Bev (Jon) Hoffmann, Sheboygan; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Adolf, and a sister, Thelma "Jackie" Karnstadt.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's research.

Martha Gruman

COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Martha Gruman, 83, Cooperstown, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in Griggs County Nursing Home, Cooperstown.

Martha Fiebiger was born Aug. 15, 1915, the daughter of Ed and Mary (Zimprich) Fiebiger, in Jessie, N.D. She worked on the family farm. She married Martin Kulkok on Aug. 2, 1944, in Moorhead. They lived and farmed in Moorhead. In 1952 she moved to Cooperstown. She did domestic work. Martin Kulkok died in 1970. She married Joe Gruman on Dec. 18, 1982. They lived in Hannaford, N.D. Joe Gruman died May 25, 1994. She moved to Cooperstown.

She is survived by sons, Richard (Mavis), Warroad, Minn., Marvin (Debbie), Cooperstown, and Mike (Jan), Idaho Falls, Idaho; daughters, Margaret (Lyndon) Anderson, Bridgedale, Minn., Mary (Mike) Howes, Wahpeton, N.D., Kathleen Ballou, Lubbock, Texas, and Becky (Morris) Grandalen, Preston, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Anne (Quentin) Dahl, Cooperstown, Florence (Don) Gisvold, Carrington, N.D., and Ida Heinze, Grand Forks; and brothers, Billy, Mekinock, N.D. and Frank (Florence), Cooperstown.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. George Catholic Church, Cooperstown.

Visitation: 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 6: 40 rosary and 7 p.m. prayer service, Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. George Cemetery.

Bernice C. Waldon

Bernice C. Waldon, 88, East Grand Forks, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home, Crookston.

Bernice Sorenson was born Aug. 5, 1910, the daughter of William and Anna (Witz) Sorenson, in Grand Forks. She worked at Whitey's Cafe, East Grand Forks, and the Deaconess Hospital, and later she farmed in Carrington, N.D. She returned to East Grand Forks in 1972.

She is survived by daughters, June Jones, Minneapolis, and Phyllis (Robert) Foster, East Grand Forks; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Walter, Wilfred and Percy; and sisters, Florence and Evelyn.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, United Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks.

Burial: Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks.

Leonard F. Barta

MINTO, N.D. -- Leonard F. Barta, 79, Minto, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 1998, at home.

Leonard F. Barta was born May 4, 1919, the son of George and Mary (Houdek) Barta, in Pisek, N.D. He attended school in the Pisek area. He served in the Army Air Corps from May 1942 to 1945. He married Genevieve Schamilec on June 10, 1946, in Veseleyville, N.D. He farmed in the Forest River/Minto area until retirement. He worked for the North Dakota Border Patrol, Grand Forks.

He is survived by his wife; children, Susan (John) Gudajtes and Adrienne (Brad) Narloch, both of Minto, Renae (Alan) Bye, and Greg Barta, both of Grand Forks, Kathy (Bill) Slominski, Valley City, Gary (Terri) Barta, Lisbon and Vern (Kathy) Barta, East Bethel, Minn; 24 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy; five brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Minto.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services all in the church.

Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery (Tollefson, Grafton, N.D.).

Adella E. Evans

Adella E. Evans, 87, formally of 305 51st Street N., died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, Minn.

Adella Eleanor Shirek was born Feb. 20, 1911, the daughter of Michael and Catherina (Hodny) Shirek, in Lankin, N.D. She grew up and attended school in Mapes, N.D. She graduated from high school in Michigan, N.D. She married Peter Evans on Jan. 27, 1941, in Michigan. The lived in Grand Forks. Peter Evans died Nov. 10, 1977.

She is survived by daughters, Cheryl (Jerry) Fontaine, Mentor, Minn. and Janice (Len) Hoffman, Cudahy, Wis.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Dolores (Jerome) Poosch, Argusville, N.D.; and brothers, Lawrence, Park River and Jerry, Erskine.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Max, Henry and Ted.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Gregory J. Norman Funeral Home, S. Washington Street, Grand Forks.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.
