Palmer Fonnest

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Palmer Fonnest, 92, Thief River Falls, died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, in Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.
Palmer Harold Fonnest was born May 13, 1906, the son of Ben and Margia (Gware) Fonnest, in Veldt Township, Marshall County, Minn. He attended school in Grygla, Minn. He farmed near Grygla and cut pulp in the Northwest Angle.

He is survived by a brother, Tron (Helen), Thief River Falls.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Mae Wernes and Adella Anderson.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Grace Lutheran Church, Grygla, Minn.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Olaf Cemetery, Valley Township, Marshall County.

Mabel C. Senske

CROOKSTON -- Mabel C. Senske, 80, Crookston, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Mabel Casavan was born Feb. 26, 1918, the daughter of Cyprian and Olive (Boutain) Casavan, in Dorothy, Minn., where she attended school. She married Louie Senske on June 14, 1938, in Dorothy. They lived in Crookston, where in the early 1940s, they established the Senske Dray and Transfer Company, now known as the Senske and Son Transfer. She worked as the bookkeeper.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Jim (Cindy), Grand Forks; a daughter, Cindy Demarais, Red Lake Falls, Minn.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Delphus, Crookston; and sisters, Cora Hanson, Virginia, Minn., Cecile Thode, Red Lake Falls, Marie Renz, Alaska, Gladys McGraph, Port Angeles, Wash., and Doris Pahlen, Shelly, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Naomi Keasler; sisters, Lilly Hanson and Obeline Lizotte; and brothers, Henry and Lawrence "Blackie"

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Chapel, in Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Crookston.

Alyce 'Peggy' Baker

BEMIDJI -- Alyce "Peggy" Baker, 64, Woodsfield, Ohio, formerly of Bemidji, died Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, in Barnesville Hospital, Woodsfield.

Alyce J. Miller was born Jan. 16, 1934, the daughter of George Henry and Anna Marie (Warrington) Miller, in Bemidji. She retired from LGAM Corp., of Woodsfield. She married Paul R. Baker. He died Sept. 30, 1992.

She is survived by sons, Ricky, Woodsfield, Lawrence, Sioux City, Iowa, and Paul Baker II, Rockbridge, Ohio; daughters, Ruthann Robbins, Woodsfield, and Frances Poole, Woodsfield; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; brothers, George (Barb), Fosston, Minn., Larry (Linda), Bemidji, and David (Doris), Grand Forks; and sisters, Ruthie (Don) Baker, Bemidji, and Anna Mae (Larry) Bakke, Mona (Don) Brundin, and Shirley (Jerry) Anderson, all of Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Bauer-Turner Funeral Home, Woodsfield.

Burial: Oaklawn Cemetery, Woodsfield. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 106 N. Main St., Woodsfield, Ohio 43793, or the American Heart Association, 1327 Market Ave, Canton, Ohio 44714.

Lloyd D. Gjesdal

COOPERSTOWN, N.D. -- Lloyd D. Gjesdal, 78, Cooperstown, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, in a farm accident at his home.
Lloyd D. Gjesdal was born Sept. 3, 1920, the son of Lars and Elizabeth (Loge) Gjesdal, in Cooperstown, where he attended school and farmed with his parents. He married Doris Larson on June 20, 1954. They lived on the family farm, where he continued to farm with his son.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Bradley (Rhonda), Cooperstown; a daughter, Brenda, Wahpeton; three grandchildren; and a sister, Ella (Harvey) Kroer, Luverne, N.D.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Luverne Lutheran Church, Luverne.

Burial: Ness Cemetery, Cooperstown (Quam-Plaisted-Cushman, Cooperstown).

Gerhard Bjornstad

INKSTER, N.D. -- Gerhard Bjornstad, 86, Smithton, Ill., formerly of Inkster, died Sept. 5, 1998, in Freeburg Care Center.
Gerhard Bjornstad was born March 8, 1912, the son of Kristian and Oline (Quanrud) Bjornstad, in Mekinock, N.D. He married Robbie Denson in 1943. They lived and worked in Elkhart, Ind., before moving to Smithton. He served in the U.S. Army, and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Robbie Bjornstad died in 1994.

He is survived by two sons, four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Borgny (Sanford) Larson, Larimore, N.D.; and a brother, Tilford, Fordville, N.D.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Burial: Nesmith Cemetery, Nesmith, Ala.

Helen M. Bracken

LEEDS, N.D. -- Helen M. Bracken, 67, Leeds, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake.
Helen Marie Bracken was born Aug. 27, 1931, the daughter of Lewie and Christine (Rodland) Bracken, near Hurricane Lake, in Pierce County, N.D. She moved with her family to Normania Township, Benson County, N.D., to Springfield Township, Towner County, N.D., near Leeds. She attended school in Normania Township, and graduated from high school in Leeds in 1949. She graduated from Minot (N.D.) State Teachers College. She taught in rural schools in Fessenden, N.D., Minot, Leeds and Devils Lake, retiring in 1987.

She is survived by sisters, Irene Lysne and Delores (Leroy) Lunde, both of Devils Lake; and brothers, Orris (Gloria), Leeds, Orlando (Pat), Jamestown, Gordon (Barb), Grafton, Roger (Marcia), Curtis (Bev), and Lyle, all of Devils Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law, Orvin Lysne; and a sister-in-law, Beatrice Bracken.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, North Prairie Free Lutheran Church, Leeds.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m. today in Nelson Funeral Home, and 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Mildred Gustafson

CROOKSTON -- Mildred Gustafson, 86, Crookston, formerly of Fertile, Minn., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the Villa St. Vincent, Crookston.
Mildred Lucille Larson was born June 3, 1912, the daughter of Louis and Annie (Johnson) Larson, in Velva, N.D. In 1919, she moved with her family to Melvin, N.D., where she attended school, graduating from the eighth grade. She worked for the Melvin Store. She married Earl Richard Gustafson on Nov. 6, 1933, in Fertile. They lived on the Gustafson farm in Melvin. She was a charter member of the Onstad Homemakers Club. Earl Gustafson died November of 1981.

She is survived by sons, Charles (Pat), Beltami, Minn., and James (Judy), Crookston; a daughter, Janet Opdahl, Salem, Ore.; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sisters, Gladys Berglund, Fertile, and Lois Clynch, East Grand Forks; three sisters-in-law; and a brother-in-law.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Randolph and Clifford; and a sister, Myrtle Conatser.

Services: 1: 30 p.m. Monday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, in Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile.

Burial: Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile.

Erwin Falk

BATHGATE, N.D. -- Erwin Falk, 86, Bathgate, N.D., died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, N.D.
Erwin C. Falk was born May 16, 1912, the son of Charles and Helen (Fast) Falk, in Mountain Lake, Minn. He moved with his family to Emerson, Man. They lived in the Pembina area before moving to Bathgate. He farmed in Bathgate for several years. He married Marie Bauer on April 30, 1942. He married Peggy Brown on Aug. 26, 1972. Peggy Falk died Aug. 15, 1984.

He is survived by a son, Ron (Jane), Cavalier; a daughter, Darlene Erovick, Fargo; stepsons, William (Caroline) Brown, Rapid City S.D., Dave (Val) Brown and John (Lorna) Brown, both of Cavalier; a stepdaughter, Ruth (Mike) Carpenter, Cavalier; three grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; a great-grandson; a stepgreat-grandson; and a brother, Ed, Karlstad.

He was preceded in death by a son, Clifford; and sisters, Alma Craig, Katherine Schroeder and Leona Hewitt.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Jensen-Askew Funeral Home, Cavalier.

Burial: Hamilton Cemetery, Hamilton, N.D.

Orlin Watnemo

BEMIDJI -- Orlin Watnemo, 78, Bemidji, formerly of Fosston, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at home.
Orlin Leroy Watnemo was born March 15, 1920, the son of Martin and Gina (Nyland) Watnemo, in Fosston. He attended school in Queen Township, Polk County, Minn. In 1936, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He married Doris Irene Huso on Aug. 18, 1941, in Gonvick, Minn. They lived in Detroit, Mich., before moving to the Fosston area, where he worked as a truck driver. He served in the U.S. Navy from April 19, 1942 to Feb. 14, 1946. He returned to Fosston, where he continued to worked as a truck driver. He worked for JBW Transfer in Fosston and for Dahlen Transport, South St. Paul, until retiring in 1982. He moved to Bemidji. Doris Watnemo died Aug. 21, 1997.

He is survived by sons, Douglas (Carol), Maplewood, Minn. and Jarvis (Mary), Hutchinson, Minn.; a daughter, Janet (J. Duane) Olson, Fosston; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Harry (Agnes) and Virgil (Mavis), both of Fosston; and sisters, Ila Torgerson, Fosston, and Gladys Odegaard, Gonvick.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; and brothers-in-law, Raymond Odegaard and Orrin Torgerson.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Fosston Baptist Church.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, with 7 p.m. prayer service, in Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Queen Cemetery, Fosston.

Clara L. Maxwell

Clara L. Maxwell, 94, Grand Forks, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1998, in Valley Eldercare Center.
Clara Louise Zinke was born June 3, 1904, the daughter of John and Louisa (Schultz) Zinke, in Acton Township, Walsh County, N.D., where she attended school. She married John Maxwell in 1924. She was employed as a cook in the Greystone Hotel and Doc's Restaurant, Stephen, Minn., Zinke's Cafe, Grafton, N.D., and the Westward Ho, Grand Forks. She retired in 1964. John Maxwell died May 20, 1936.

She is survived by sons, Gordon, Grand Forks, Donald (Joyce), Cerritos, Calif., and Kenneth (Mary), Mount Horeb, Wis.; daughters, Doris (Vernon) Dagoberg, Stephen, Jean Insley, Timonium, Md., Carole (Fred) Riley, Eugene, Ore., and Glenna (Kermit) Garske, Webster, N.D.; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, George, Springfield, Ore., and Paul, Eureka, Calif.; and sisters, Rose Maxwell, Grafton, Martha Krebs, Eugene, and Lillian Millang, Ames, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren, five brothers and a sister.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Calvary Lutheran Church.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Stephen Cemetery (Amundson)

Elling J. Dahlen

Elling J. Dahlen, 92, Grand Forks, formerly of Dahlen, N.D., died Tuesday, Sept. 29. 1998, in Valley Elder Care, Grand Forks.
Elling J. Dahlen was born Sept. 23, 1906, the son of Andrew and Clara (Espelien) Dahlen, in Dahlen, where he attended school. He married Amalia Midtmoen on Nov. 8, 1927, in Dahlen. They farmed the Elling N. Dahlen homestead near Dahlen. They moved to Grand Forks in 1995. He moved to Valley Elder Care on Sept. 14, 1998.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Clarine Lian, Grand Forks; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Laurence and Clarence (Nell), both of Fordville, N.D.; and a sister-in-law, Olga Dahlen, Dahlen.

He was preceded in death by a son, Duane; a son-in-law, Glenn Lian; brothers, Alvin, Rudolph and Johnnie and a brother in infancy; a sister in infancy; and a sister-in-law, Esther Dahlen.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Dahlen Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and one hour before services, all in the church.

Burial: Middle Forest Cemetery, Dahlen.
