Irene Solberg

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Irene Solberg, 82, Thief River Falls, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn., where she had lived since July 1989.

Irene M. Swanson was born Aug. 5, 1917, the daughter of Sam and Caroline (Skeie) Swanson, in Deer Park Township, Pennington County, Minn. She married Garvin Solberg on Oct. 6, 1940. They farmed in Mayfield Township, Pennington County, Minn. Garvin Solberg died in 1976.

She is survived by children, Donald and Frances (Darin) Olimb, both of Warroad, Minn., Russell and Maynard (Darla), both of Thief River Falls, and Carol (Dennis) Decker, Sedgwick, Kan.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and brothers, George (Louise), Tacoma, Wash., Lloyd (Lillian), Des Moines, Wash., and Myles (Bertine), Thief River Falls.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lavonne; and sisters, Myrtle Smith and Alvina Swanson.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Heritage Living Center, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: One hour before services.

Burial: Ebenezer Cemetery, Mayfield Township (Green, Thief River Falls).

Emma Larson

MAYVILLE, N.D. -- Emma Larson, 100, Mayville, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, where she had lived since 1995.

Emma Amalia Nelson was born Aug. 14, 1898, the daughter of Jacob and Kjerstine (Jacobson) Nilson, in Bisbee, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She attended Valley City (N.D.) Normal School. She taught schools in the Bisbee area. She married Oscar Larson on Dec. 2, 1918, in Bisbee. They farmed and operated the dairy in Bisbee. They moved to Mayville in 1978. Oscar Larson died in 1978.

She is survived by a son, Curtis (Lydia), Mayville; a daughter, Joyce (El) Kollman, Fargo; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Audrey; and a son, Glenn Austin.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Sunday, Mayville Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Baker Funeral Home, Mayville, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bisbee Cemetery.

William L. Windahl

William L. Windahl, 97, Fergus Falls, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Lake Region Hospital.

William L. Windahl was born June 16, 1901, the son of Ole and Clare Windahl, in Newfolden, Minn. He attended Lutheran Brethren School in Grand Forks. In 1932, he graduated from MacPhail College of Music with a bachelor of music degree in professional and public school music. He attended Minneapolis School of Art, studied privately with artist Arne Berger, Minneapolis, and took courses from Fine Arts Institute, Omaha, Neb., earning a major in art. He married Agnes Skovholt on June 25, 1932, in Mooreton, N.D. He taught at Lutheran Brethren School and moved with the school to Fergus Falls in 1935. He taught for 24 years year, traveled with his brother, the Rev. Arnold Windahl, in evangelistic work in the United States, Canada and Norway, and worked at Lutheran Brethren Publishing Co. for 13 years. He was a soloist on radio programs. Agnes Windahl died in 1976.

He is survived by daughters, Naomi (Allan) Fischer, Fargo, and Joyce (Philip) Aune, Underwood, N.D.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Haugen, Newfolden.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Bethel Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Glende-Johnson-Nelson & Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls.

Burial: St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Mooreton.

Helma J. Anderson

HATTON, N.D. -- Helma J. Anderson, 85, Hatton, formerly of Clifford, N.D., died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in Tri-County Nursing Home, Hatton.

Helma J. Holman was born May 15, 1913, the daughter of Nick and Mary (Thorson) Holman, in Clifford, where she attended school. She married Walter Anderson on Nov. 14, 1931, in Moorhead. They lived in Lake George, Minn., and Vancouver, Wash. After the war, they moved to Clifford. She worked at the grocery store and post office. They retired and lived in Hillsboro, N.D., and spent winters in Arizona.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mary Jane Raney, Fremont, Ohio; a son, Dennis (Carolyn); five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Maynard and Thor.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Norman Lutheran Church, Clifford.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Clifford Cemetery.

Magdalena 'Maggie' Hovet

HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Magdalena "Maggie" Hovet, 87, Hillsboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at home.

Magdalena Josephine Dosmann was born Sept. 28, 1911, the daughter of John and Regina (Dietrich) Dosmann, in Mount Carmel, N.D. She attended school in Mount Carmel and Langdon, N.D. She married John Hovet on Dec. 5, 1930, in Moorhead. They lived in Hillsboro, where they owned the John Deere dealership. John Hovet died in 1990.

She is survived by daughters, Donna (Stan) Callon, Pleasanton, Calif., Thelma (Don) Kramer, Green Bay, Wis., Mary Ann Fagundo, Boulder, Colo., and Kathy (Al) Erickson, Sebeka, Minn.; a son, Robert, Hillsboro and Las Vegas; 18 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; three brothers and six sisters.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Hillsboro.

Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Hillsboro.

Mabel N. Ness

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Mabel N. Ness, 90, Thief River Falls, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Oakland Park Nursing Home, Thief River Falls.

Mabel N. Newman was born Feb. 7, 1908, the daughter of Nels and Anna (Swenson) Newman, in Moore County, Ramsey, Minn. In 1918, they moved to Thief River Falls, where she attended school. She married Palmer Ness on Jan. 24, 1928, in Thief River Falls. He died in 1981.

She is survived by brothers, Hans, Thief River Falls, Albert (Leona) and Walter, both of Alden, Minn., and Elmer (Dorothy).

She was preceded in death by brothers, Jens, Einar and William; and a sister, Marie Hunter.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Green Funeral Home Chapel, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today and one hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Nina G. Listul

HOOPLE, N.D. -- Nina G. Listul, 98, Fargo, formerly of Hoople, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in Elim Nursing Home, Fargo, where she had lived since February 1998.

Nina Gjevere was born Dec. 4, 1900, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Gjevere, in Union, N.D., where she attended school. She married Kittle Listul on June 20, 1922. They lived in Hoople and St. Thomas, N.D. Kittle Listul died Sept. 18, 1976. In 1978, she moved to Grand Forks, where she lived until 1988, when she moved to Fargo.

She is survived by eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Norman; a daughter, Norma Leedahl; and several brothers and sisters.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, First Lutheran Church, Hoople.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Hoople City Cemetery (Tollefson, Grafton, N.D.).

Roman A. Zins

Roman A. Zins, 82, Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Vencor Hospital, Folsom, Calif.

Roman Adam Zins was born Nov. 19, 1916, the son of Joseph and Mary (Weinhandl) Zins, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. He married Virginia Buckmiller on April 3, 1946, in St. Paul. He married Clarissa Burtness Halvorson on July 20, 1968, in Clear Lake, S.D. They owned a farm in Mekinock, N.D. Clarissa Zins died Sept. 2, 1994. He married Nina Jean Gates Harlow on Feb. 16, 1996, in Grand Forks. He was a graduate of Doolin Technical College, majoring in refrigeration. He owned and operated Zins Heating & Refrigeration Service from March 1948 until retiring in 1994.

He is survived by a son, Ronald, Minneapolis; a daughter, Jackie (Scott) Johnson, Rocklin, Calif.; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, Francis, Long Prairie, Minn., and Benedict, Minneapolis; and sisters, Flora Hudson and Louise Foldesi, both of Greenbush, Laura Zins, St. Paul, and Rita Wagoner, Moorhead; and stepchildren, James, John, Jeri, Joseph, Jeffrey, Jeanne, Jackie and Joyce.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Michael's Catholic Church.

Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks.

Burial: Ness Lutheran Church Cemetery, Mekinock.

David C. Simning

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- David C. Simning, 70, Hamilton, Mont., formerly of Thief River Falls, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital, Hamilton.

David C. Simning was born Oct. 16, 1928, the son of Dewey and Edith (Larson) Simning, in Minneapolis, where he attended school. He worked as a private painter. He married Carol Ann Carlson on Oct. 13, 1979, in Apple Valley, Minn. They owned and operated The Master's Touch Bookstore in Grand Rapids, Minn., before retiring and moving to Hamilton, in 1993. He worked for Pigman Builders.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Jeffrey, Birmingham, Ala.; a daughter, Vicky (Stephen) Boutwell, Appleton; two grandchildren; and a brother, Gordon, Mount Prospect, Ill.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Hamilton Christ Bible Church, and 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Green Funeral Home Chapel, Thief River Falls.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Thief River Falls.

Joann K. Johnson

PARK RIVER, N.D. -- Joann K. Johnson, 62, Casselton, N.D., formerly of Park River, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in MeritCare Medical Center, Fargo, after a battle with cancer.

Joann Kristine Houser was born Jan. 29, 1937, the daughter of James and Blanche (Staven) Houser, in Park River, where she graduated from high school in 1955. She attended UND. She worked for Park River Potato Flake Plant. She married George Johnson on April 8, 1959, in Park River. They lived in Park River until moving to Devils Lake in 1964. In 1966 they moved to Butte, N.D., where she worked as a bookkeeper for Cenex. They moved to Hazelton, N.D., in 1977, where she worked for H&R Block. In 1983 they moved to Casselton. She worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota in Fargo, until her retirement on Dec. 31, 1998.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Shelley (John) Johnson, Owatonna, Minn., and Terri (Paul) Johnson, Jamestown; sons, Bradley (Janelle), Bismarck, and Bryan, Fargo; eight grandchildren; her mother, Park River; brothers, Vernon and Larry (Kathy), both of Park River, and a sister-in-law, Nancy Houser, Park River.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a sister, Eileen.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Martin's Lutheran Church, Casselton.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, West Funeral Home, Casselton.

Burial: 11 a.m. Saturday, South Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grafton, N.D. Memorials are suggested to Roger Maris Cancer Center, 820 Fourth St. N., Fargo, 58102.

Doyle Aultman

BEMIDJI -- Doyle Aultman, 70, Bemidji, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji.

Doyle Edward Aultman was born Feb. 20, 1928, the son of Ivan and Cecelia (Minette) Aultman, in Walker, Minn., where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army and later was transferred to the Air Force. He was discharged in 1948. He married Beverly Cable on Dec. 15, 1949, in Bemidji. He worked for F.W. Woolworth Co. He was recalled to the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict, from 1950 to 1951. He worked for the U.S. Armco and Republic Companies in Babbit and Silver Bay, Minn., from 1951 to 1959 as a heavy equipment and machine operator. He attended Bemidji State University, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1964. He taught in Crookston, while serving as Tri-County Head Start Program Director. He received his master's degree in education administration. In 1968 he became executive director of the Bi-County Community Action Program which included Head Start and Upward Bound programs in Beltrami County. He worked as executive director of the Region "A" Advisory Council Governors Commission and Crime Prevention and Control until 1978. From 1978 until 1990 he sold real estate and health insurance policies in the Bemidji area. They bought a resort on Lower Lake LaSalle near Becida, Minn., in 1959, which they ran for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Robert (Pat Speckman), and Stephen, both of Becida; daughters, Suzanne (Curt) Kringen, Gloria (David) Collyard, Kay (Larry) Mack and Janet Aultman, all of Bemidji, Kathleen (David) Ramos, Omaha, Neb., and Jacqueline (Richard) Knowles, South Haven, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; a sister, Donna (Russell) Smith, Walker; and brothers, Dean (Betty), Fort Dodge, Iowa, Neil (Marlene), Adam, Wis., and Elwin (Norma), Fountain, Colo.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Laurel, Rodney and Leland; and a grandchild.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, St. Philip's Catholic Church, Bemidji.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 6: 30 p.m. prayer service, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji.

Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to St. Philip's Catholic Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Military: RitesRalph Gracie American Legion, Bemidji.
