Margaret Cowan

LEEDS, N.D. -- Margaret Cowan, 92, Leeds, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at home.

Margaret Rohrer was born Aug. 23, 1906, the daughter of Issac and Sarah (McConnell) Rohrer, in Rugby, N.D. She moved with her family to Churchs Ferry, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She attended Valley City (N.D.) State Teachers College and taught school. She married Kirk Cowan on June 27, 1929, in Churchs Ferry. They farmed in Leeds until retiring in 1970. They moved into Leeds in 1957. Kirk Cowan died Dec. 20, 1991.

She is survived by a son, Kirk Jr. (Carol), Grandview, Wash.; a daughter, Diane (Lyle) Long, York, N.D.; a son-in-law, Arne Nestegard, Minot; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Hestor, Bismarck, and Arvin, Churchs Ferry; sisters, Irene (Sandy) Dale, Boseman, Mont., and Lois Ljungren, Sun City, Ariz.; and sisters-in-law, Margaret Rohrer and Fern Rohrer, both of Devils Lake.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Irene Nestegard; a granddaughters; brothers, Archie and Darwin; and two infant brothers.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Leeds Lutheran Church (Nelson, Leeds).

Shirley M. Pederson

CANDO, N.D. -- Shirley M. Pederson, 68, Cando, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, in Towner County Medical Center, Cando.

Shirley Mae Pederson was born July 9, 1930, the daughter of George and Arvilla (Kreklow) Karsten, in Cando. She was raised and attended school in Minnesota. She returned to Cando in the 1950s. She married Melvin Pederson on Oct. 24, 1981, in Cando. He died Feb. 25, 1991.

She is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Kruger, Norfolk, Va.; stepdaughters, Karen Stein and Kadi Lapsitis; a granddaughter; and her mother, Cando.

She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Lee Johnson, a grandson; and her father.

Services: 11 a.m. today, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.

Visitation: 9 a.m. until services today in the funeral home.

Burial: Union Cemetery, Egeland, N.D. Memorials are suggested to Cando Hockey Program, in care of Marlene Miller.

Mary Kuntz

RUGBY, N.D. -- Mary Kuntz, 94, Rugby, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, in Trinity Medical Center, Minot.

Mary Haman was born Oct. 2, 1904, the daughter of Michael and Eva (Baumstack) Haman, in Fulda, N.D., where she attended country school. She worked in a threshing cook car. She married Julius Kuntz on Nov. 3, 1925, in Fulda. They farmed in Smokey Lake Township, McHenry County, N.D., until 1952, when they moved to Rugby. She moved to the Harold S. Haaland Home in Rugby in 1986. In 1987, she entered the Long Term Care Unit in Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby. Julius Kuntz died July 3, 1984.

She is survived by children, Eva (James) Wylie, Mesa, Ariz., Anton (Jane), Bottineau, N.D., Maggie (Leo) Degenstein, Rugby; Cecilia (Marvin) Heil and Raymond (Lois), both of Grand Forks, and Theresa (Leonard) Wangler, Balta, N.D.; 33 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and a brother, August, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by a great-grandson; brothers, Frank, Jack, Anton, Adam, Joe and John; and sisters, Elizabeth Koble, Margaret Warhank; and Pauline Wolfe.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. today, Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby.

Burial: Little Flower Catholic Cemetery (Niewoehner, Rugby).

Jean Pollock

CANDO, N.D. -- Jean Pollock, 79, Cando, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at home.

Jean Louise Pollock was born March 2, 1919, the daughter of Clarence and Amy Mary (Leam) Pollock, in Cando, where she graduated from high school. She worked for the Towner County Auditor's Office, retiring in 1988.

She is survived by cousins.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. Wednesday until time of services in the funeral home.

Burial: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando.

Corwin 'Cory' Anderson

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Corwin "Cory" Anderson, 21, Thief River Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Corwin Michael Anderson was born May 4, 1977, the son of Steve and Ginny (Burrell) Anderson, in Thief River Falls, where he graduated from high school in 1995. He married Shari Timm on Oct. 26, 1996, in Grand Marais, Minn. They moved near Thief River Falls, then to Salol, Minn., and worked at Polaris Industries. They then moved to Grand Marais before returning to the Thief River Falls area, where he worked as a surveyor for J.O.R. Engineering.

He is survived by his wife, Warren, Minn.; a son, Michael Timothy, Warren; his parents, Grand Marais; his brother, Jeremy (Jennifer), Fall River, Mass.; and grandparents, Mel and Eunice Burrell, Thief River Falls, and Edwin and Mabel Anderson, Bemidji.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, United Methodist Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Karlie Rose Skavlem

Karlie Rose Skavlem, 6, Grand Forks, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at home.

Karlie Rose Skavlem was born Sept. 23, 1992, the daughter of Glen and Tammy (Amundson) Skavlem, in Grand Forks. She lived in Inkster, N.D., until moving with her family to Grand Forks in 1993.

She is survived by her parents; a brother, Casey, at home; grandparents, Dorothy and Tom Amundson, Inkster, and Andrew and Joyce Skavlem, Trimont, Minn.

She was preceded in death by a grandmother, Rose Skavlem; and great-grandparents, Henry and Sara Amundson, and Norman and Ruth Dunlop.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Sharon Lutheran Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks.

Leo Schneider

RUGBY, N.D. -- Leo Schneider, 78, Rugby, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, in Rugby Medical Center.

Leo Schneider was born Oct. 12, 1920, the son of Ignatius and Margaret Schneider, in Girard Township, Pierce County, Balta, N.D., where he attended school. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942. He returned home and farmed with his father. He married Magdalena Schneider on Oct. 17, 1946, in Orrin, N.D. He farmed in Rugby and with his brother, Ned, near Girard Lake south of Balta.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Margaret (Duane) Voeller, Rugby; Beatrice (Mike) Hovde, Forest River, N.D., Leona Frueh, Grand Forks; Judy (Ron) Bruesch, Clackamas, Ore., Rita (Fred) Mitzel, Balta, Mary Ann (Barry) Kappes, Ada, Minn., Teresa (Allen) Wolfe, Underwood, Minn., and Donna Schneider, Rugby; sons, Alvin, Minot, Melvin, Springfield, Ore., Kenneth, Grand Forks, Steven (Lori), Rugby, and David, Caron Port, Sask; 31 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Cecilia Bartsch, Apple Valley, Minn.; and brothers, Ned, Balta, and John, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ben.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, and 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby.

Burial: Little Flower Cemetery, Rugby.

Military rites: Clarence Larson Post No. 23, American Legion, Rugby.

Georgia S. Ostlund

Georgia S. Ostlund, 55, East Grand Forks, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 1998, at Sunset Memorial Homes, Grafton, N.D.

Georgia S. Cariveau was born Nov. 14, 1943, the daughter of Stanley and Norma (Torgerson) Cariveau, in Grand Forks. She grew up in Bygland Township, East Grand Forks, and attended school in East Grand Forks. She married Donald Ostlund on Feb. 18, 1960, in East Grand Forks.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Tammy (Tim) Olson, Grand Forks, Brenda Bridgeford, Drayton, N.D., and Lori (Tom) King and Dawn Marie Ostlund, both of East Grand Forks; five grandchildren; a sister, Sharon Lund, East Grand Forks; and her grandmother, Alice Hoglo, East Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Stennes Funeral Home Chapel, East Grand Forks.

Visitation: Two hours before services in the chapel.

Burial: Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks.

Laurie A. Penuel

Laurie A. Penuel, 41, Grand Forks, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, at Valley Memorial Home-Eldercare.

Laurie Ann Penuel was born June 12, 1957, the daughter of James Jr. and Dorothy (Jenson) Penuel, in Fargo. She attended school in Fargo and after being hospitalized in Grand Forks, she graduated from Red River High School in 1976. She also attended UND.

She is survived by her mother, Grand Forks; brothers, James III (Barbara), Moorhead, and Thomas (Millie), Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Services: 10 a.m. today, Valley Memorial Home-Eldercare.

Visitation: One half hour before services in the home.

Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo (Norman, Columbia Road).

Chester A. Torgerson

MADDOCK, N.D. -- Chester A. Torgerson, 91, Maddock, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, in Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

Chester Arnold Torgerson was born Feb. 2, 1907, the son of Thorvald and Gunhild (Thompson) Torgerson, in Rosedale Township, Pierce County, Esmond, N.D. He moved with his family to Eldon Township, Benson County, Maddock, in 1909. He began farming with his family at a young age. He married Ida Helgeson on Nov. 27, 1935, in Minnewaukan, N.D. They farmed in Eldon Township until retiring in 1978. Ida Torgerson died Sept. 8, 1993. In 1996, he moved to Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.

He is survived by a sister, Hazell Helgeson, Minnewaukan; and a brother, Gordon, Maddock.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Torgerson.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery.

Alvin G. Ball

ROLLA, N.D. -- Alvin G. Ball, 90, Rolla, formerly of Sarles, N.D., died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, in Presentation Medical Center, Rolla.

Alvin G. Ball was born July 14, 1908, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Brumwall) Ball, in Dash Township, Towner County, N.D. He was raised in Sarles, where he graduated from high school in 1928. He attended college in Valley City, N.D. He worked in Flint, Mich. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to Dec. 31, 1942. In 1942, he began farming in Sarles. He married Ethel Witheridge in Tacoma, Wash. He retired from farming in 1970. Ethel Ball died in 1974. He married Vera Disrud in 1975. They lived in Sarles until 1988, when they moved to Rolla. They spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., until 1995.

He is survived by his wife; a stepson, Ronald (Trudy) Disrud, Rolla; a stepdaughter, Carol (Jim) Kormeier, Healdsburg, Calif.; six stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; brothers, Victor, Forman, N.D., Milson (Grace), Minnewaukan; and a sister, Violet Hannamon, Puyallup, Wash.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, James Disrud; and a sister, Luverne Ward.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Rolla.

Visitation: 6 to 9 p.m. today, Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rolla, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Rolla Cemetery.

Military Rites: Fred C. Wagner, Post No. 236, American Legion, Rolla.
