Helen Schlittenhard

WALHALLA, N.D. -- Helen Schlittenhard, 78, Walhalla, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, in the nursing home in Walhalla.

Helen Speidel was born Feb. 2, 1920, the daughter of John and Emilie (Golz) Speidel, in Fredonia, N.D., where she attended local school. She helped on the family farm. She married Robert Schlittenhard on Feb. 14, 1941, in Gackle, N.D. They made their home in Gackle. In 1953, they moved to Grand Forks. In 1964, she began working as a cook at UND. She retired in 1980. She entered the nursing home in 1997.

She is survived by her husband, Cavalier, N.D.; sons, Robert (Linda), Cavalier, and Clayton (Maureen), Langdon, N.D.; daughters, Jerane Johnson and Jolene (David) Gosselin, both of Grand Forks; foster children, Walter Kram, Moorhead, and Harry Kram, of New Jersey; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert, Bakersfield.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Ted and John.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gackle.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Haut Funeral Home, Gackle.

Burial: Gackle City Cemetery.

Betty Bannister

LANGDON, N.D. -- Betty Bannister, 63, Langdon, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Maple Manor Nursing Home, Langdon.

Betty Jane Melcher was born Oct. 25, 1935, the daughter of William and Linda (Hill) Melcher, in Worland, Wyo. She attended school in Portland, Ore. She married Donald Bannister on Dec. 24, 1955, in Yuma, Ariz. They moved to Harvard, Neb. In 1983, they moved to Portland, and 1992, they moved to Langdon.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Linda (Paul) Domres, Wales, N.D., and Susan Davis, Republican City, Neb.; five grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth and Arnold, both of Portland; and sisters, Shirley Tharp and Judith Rouse, both of Portland.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Donna Jane; and a brother, Bill.

Services: 8 p.m. today, Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Burial: Harvard Cemetery, Neb.

Dorothy C. Oihus

GRAFTON, N.D. -- Dorothy C. Oihus, 63, Grafton, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton.

Dorothy C. Dahlin was born April 19, 1935, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Fifer) Dahlin, in Minnewaukan, N.D. In 1938, her biological parents died and she was adopted by Ludvig and Mabel Helland of Auburn, N.D. She attended school in Martin Township, Walsh County, N.D., and graduated from high school in Grafton. She married Robert Oihus on June 16, 1952, in Grafton. They made their home in Grafton.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Robert (Julie), Grafton; daughters, Dawn McGuire and Ann (Doug) McCann, both of Grafton, Janice Oihus, Beulah, N.D., and Jodi Oihus, Fargo; eight grandchildren; brothers, Stanley (Bebe) Dahlin, Philadelphia, Howard Dahlin, St. Paul, and Harry Stowell, Ayshire, Iowa; and sisters, Doris (Maurice) Englund, St. Cloud, and Helen Hauck, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Scott.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Grafton Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Crescent Cemetery, Grafton.

Janice Laufman

THIEF RIVER FALLS -- Janice Laufman, 59, Thief River Falls, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, in the Convalescent Nursing Care Unit of Northwest Medical Center, Thief River Falls.

Janice Pederson was born Feb. 18, 1939, the daughter of Kenneth and Edna (Blomberg) Pederson, in Thief River Falls, where she graduated from high school in 1956. She worked several jobs. She married Carl "Sonny" Carlson in 1958, in Thief River Falls. They made their home in Thief River Falls. She married Ron Laufman in 1984, in Grafton, N.D. She entered the CNC Unit on Nov. 27, 1992.

She is survived by a daughter, Jody (Ryan) Bakke, Thief River Falls; a son, Shaun (Becky) Carlson, Thief River Falls; six grandchildren; brothers, Kendall (Carol), Red Lake Falls, and Lyle, St. Hilaire, Minn., and a sister, Sheryl Pederson, Hackensack, N.J.

She was preceded in death by a son, Trent; her parents; and brothers, Keith and Royce "Pincy".

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Greenwood Cemetery.

James D. 'J.D.' Nelson

DEVILS LAKE -- James D. "J.D." Nelson, 68, Devils Lake, formerly of Edmore, N.D., died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at home.

James Donald Nelson was born May 17, 1930, the son of Henry and Alma (Landsem) Nelson, in Edmore. He attended school in Derrick, N.D., and Edmore. He served in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1950. He married Joyce Hastings on June 30, 1951, in Larimore, N.D. They lived in Larimore, where he worked for Minnesota Valley Breeders form 1952 to 1960. He attended Hanson Mechanical Trade School in Fargo. He worked for D.G. Auto in Edmore, and was an Edmore police officer. He owned and operated Nelson's Body Shop in Edmore until retiring in 1988. They moved to Devils Lake.

He is survived by his wife; sons, James Jr. (Coralie), Beulah, N.D., and Danny (Beth), Devils Lake; daughters, Deb Peterson and Donna (Kevin) Wolf, both of Devils Lake; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel (Elmer) Dammen, Hastings, Mich., Lyla (Delmer) Knudson, Cass Lake, Minn., Alta (Gilbert) Hallof, Larimore, and Lauraine (Duane) Troftgruben and Donna (Arden) Nyland, both of Grand Forks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepfather, Melvin Homme; a son, Allen; a brother, Roy; and a sister, Noram Vaule.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Concordia Lutheran Church, Edmore.

Visitation: 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bellvue Cemetery, Larimore.

Military Rites: American Legion-VFW Honor Guard, Edmore.

Alfred K. Nelson

REYNOLDS, N.D. -- Alfred K. Nelson, 92, Reynolds, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Villa St. Vincent Nursing Center, Crookston.

Alfred Kenneth Nelson was born Aug. 16, 1906, the son of Ole and Josephine Nelson, in Reynolds, where he attended school. He farmed in Reynolds. He married Thelma Salmonson on July 2, 1960, in Crookston.

He is survived by his wife.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Olander and Martin; and sisters, Mary, Nettie, Anne and Nora.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, East Walle Lutheran Church, Thompson, N.D.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: East Walle Church Cemetery.

Olga Aanderud

MADDOCK, N.D. -- Olga Aanderud, 96, Maddock, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, in St. Aloisius Medical Center, Harvey, N.D.

Olga Belinda Aanderud was born Oct. 8, 1902, the daughter of Elling and Jonetta (Johnson) Sundet, in Maddock, where she attended school. She married Clarence Aanderud on June 26, 1920, in Maddock. They farmed in Maddock until retiring in 1971 and moving into Maddock. Clarence Aanderud died in 1976. She continued to live in Maddock until 1989, when she became a resident of St. Aloisius Medical Center.

She is survived by a daughter, Berlayne (Gail) Olson, Hawthorne, Calif.; sons, C. Odell (Marilyn), Longview, Wash., and Donald (Bette), Kelso, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ardell; a grandson; a sister, Clara Krahler; and brothers, John, Arthur, Bennie and Edwin.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Viking Lutheran Church, Maddock.

Visitation: 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Burial: Church Cemetery.

Marty F. Johnson

GRANDIN, N.D. -- Marty F. Johnson, 49, formerly of Grandin, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in Veterans Medical Center, Minneapolis.

Marty Johnson was born Nov. 14, 1949, the son of Martin and Violet (Winterquist) Johnson, in Fargo. He grew up and attended school in Grandin. He joined the North Dakota Air National Guard in Fargo in 1968, where he worked until 1994 as a fireman.

He is survived by daughters, Lisa Kroger, Blackhawk, S.D., and Kimberly Johnson and Kari Johnson, both of Fargo; two grandchildren; his mother, Hillsboro, N.D.; and brothers, Mark (Sandie), Hillsboro, and Tim (Judy), Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Grandin Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Wildeman Funeral Home, Hillsboro.

Burial: Grandin Cemetery.

Richard A. Bentzinger

Richard A. Bentzinger, 49, Seattle, formerly of Mountain Home, Wash., died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, at his home in Grand Forks.

Richard A. Bentzinger was born Jan. 8, 1949, the son of Wayne and Ann Bentzinger, in Mountain Home, where he graduated from high school. He worked for Idaho Power for 19 years and retired in 1995. He moved to Seattle to attend Dominion College.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; daughter, Marsha; son, Chris; daughter-in-law, Jennifer; a grandson; his father; a brother, David; and sisters, Kathy and Sandy.

He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Wayne Jr.; and his grandfather, Henry Bauer.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Summers Funeral Home, McMurtrey Chapel, Mountain Home.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 12: 30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Justin David Fellman

GRAFTON, N.D. -- Justin David Fellman, infant son of David and Susan (Johnson) Fellman, Grafton, N.D., was born and died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in Unity Medical Center, Grafton.

He is survived by his parents; a sister, Ashley; a brother, Ronald, both at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Johnson and Arlene Fellman, all of Grafton.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harold Fellman.

Services: Will be private (Henriksen-Kamrowski, Grafton).

Alice Riely

PETERSBURG, N.D. -- Alice Riely, 80, Petersburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at MedCenter One Hospital, Bismarck.

Alice Lillian Byrne was born March 3, 1918, the daughter of Frank and Bessie (White) Byrne, in Petersburg, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She married Willis Riely on Nov. 14, 1940, in Michigan, N.D. They lived in Arvilla, N.D., before moving to Chicago. They moved to a farm near Petersburg in 1942. They retired from farming in 1984. Willis Riely died Aug. 19, 1998.

She is survived by sons, Patrick and Thomas, both of Petersburg, James (Jan), Watford City, N.D., and Richard (Deb), Grand Forks; daughters, Bonnie (Dick) Vasichek, Brocket, N.D., Susan (Greg) Gustin, Bismarck, and Ellen (Jim) Hauser, Bayfield, Wis.; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Riely, Bismarck; a son-in-law, Ken Jarolimek, Bismarck; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Estelle (Alfred) Rosenberg, Larimore, N.D., Lillian Kunshier, Anoka, Minn., and Theresa Kroke, Michigan, N.D.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter, Janice Jarolimek; brothers, Alfred, Lloyd, Lawrence, Charles and Walter; and sisters, Mary and Jenny.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church, Michigan.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, N.D., and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Michigan Cemetery.
