Herman Fox

CANDO, N.D. -- Herman Fox, 87, Cando, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Herman Fox was born March 7, 1911, the son of Alois and Franciska Fuchsgruber, in Coolin Township, Towner County, N.D., where he attended school. He married Mozelle Arthur on Sept. 6, 1933, in Cando. They farmed near Cando. They moved in to Cando in 1973 and retired from farming in 1976.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Donalene (Clifford) Moore, Fargo, and Janice Pederson, Cando; sons, Larry (Kim), Cando, and Mark, Fresco, Colo.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Fuchsgruber, Cando.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Alois, Frank, Carl and Joe; and a sister, Anna.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Cando.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. today, with an 8 p.m. prayer service in Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home, Cando.

Burial: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cando.

Alfred Gunstenson

Alfred Gunstenson, 89, Fargo, formerly of Grand Forks, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Manor Care Nursing Home, Fargo.

Alfred Gunstenson was born Aug. 18, 1909, the son of Berit and Torger Gunstenson, in Oklee, Minn. He married Helen Christopherson on June 19, 1930, in Oklee. They lived in Oklee until 1944, when they moved to Hoople, N.D. In 1956, they moved to Grand Forks, where he entered a nursing home in 1996.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Barbara (Kenneth) Hallgrimson, Grand Forks, Carilynn (Allyn) Fagerholt, Hoople, Margaret (Tom) Walker, Austin, Texas, and Leanna Dahl, Fargo; sons, Arlen (Lorraine), Fargo, and Woody (Rose), Moorhead; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two infant children, a grandson, three sisters and six brothers.

Services: 2: 30 p.m. Saturday in Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo.

Visitation: Begins 1 p.m. Saturday until services in the funeral home.

Dick Linn

Dick Linn, 84, Grand Forks, formerly of Jamestown, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in Memorial Eldercare Center, Grand Forks.

Richard Jerome Linn Sr., was born April 5, 1914, the son of Anthony and Bertie Louise (Sanders) Linn, in Sanborn, N.D. He attended school in Sanborn and Jamestown, N.D. He attended Jamestown College in 1932 and Jamestown Business College in 1933. He worked for John Deere Implement of Jamestown from 1930 to 1935, John Deere Implement of Grand Forks from 1935 to 1937, and John Deere Factory in Waterloo, Iowa, from 1937 to 1938. He returned to John Deere Implement in Jamestown in 1938. He married Dorothy Jean Newell on May 6, 1939, in Waterloo. They moved to La Crosse, Wis., where he worked for Galloway Farm Store. He moved to Owatonna, Minn., and worked for Galloway Farm Store. They returned in 1940 to Waterloo, where he worked for John Deere Implement. He worked for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads in 1942. He retired in 1974. They moved to Minot. He resided in Mountrail Bethel Home, Stanley, N.D., from 1991 to 1993. They moved to Grand Forks, where he lived in Valley Memorial Care Center.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Jerry (Patricia), Damascus, Wis., Donald (Marilyn), Fergus Falls, Minn., Timothy, Bozeman, Mont., and Michael (Theresa), Denver; daughters, Mary Pat Linn., Houston, and Kathleen (Clark) Cvancara, Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. John (Ollie), Milwaukee; and sisters, Merle Zimmerman, Mary Louise Bocian and Peggy Beck, all of Seattle, Catherine Tolton, Richmond, Va., and Doris Todd, Great Falls, Mont.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday in The Basilica of St. James, Jamestown.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. rosary and 7: 30 p.m. prayer service in Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.

Alex F. Barta

VESELEYVILLE, N.D. -- Alex F. Barta, 89, Veseleyville, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, in Lutheran Sunset Home, Grafton, N.D.

Alex F. Barta was born May 25, 1909, the son of George and Mary (Houdek) Barta, in Ops Township, Walsh County, N.D., where he attended school. He married Anna Votava on June 17, 1935, in Veseleyville. They lived and farmed in Ops and Prairie Centre Townships, Walsh County. Anna Barta died June 22, 1997.

He is survived by sons, Daniel (Colleen), Maynard (Barb), and Alex "Bud," all of Grand Forks, and Terrance, Grafton; daughters, Anna Mae (Mike) Draper, Minneapolis, Paulette (Dennis) Domier, Harwood, N.D., and Debbie (Bill) Collette, Canoga Park, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Wences "Winnie," Grafton, and Evarist, Pisek, N.D.; and a sister, Clo Kotaska, California.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Stanley, Victor, George, Lucas, Virgil and Leonard; and sisters, Stephanie Houska, Georgia Schiller and Rita Barta.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, St. Luke's Catholic Church, Veseleyville.

Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7: 30 p.m. prayer service, Henriksen-Kamrowski Funeral Home, Grafton, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Church cemetery.

Dorothy Altringer

Dorothy Altringer, 78, Grand Forks, formerly of Devils Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at home.

Dorothy Lucille Frederick was born Nov. 16, 1920, the daughter of Emil and Mathilda (Pragel) Frederick, in Merricourt, N.D. She moved to several cities in North Dakota and Minnesota. She graduated from high school in Oakes, N.D. She moved to St. Paul, where she worked. She married Harvey Altringer on Aug. 15, 1939, in St. Paul. They returned to North Dakota. They lived in Devils Lake and Minot. She was a charter member of the Eagles Auxillary, Devils Lake. She worked for Montgomery Wards Stores in Minot and Devils Lake. Following their retirement they moved to Grand Forks.

She is survived by her husband; daughters, Myrna (Tom) Peterson, Devils Lake, and Joan Durbin, Renton, Wash.; sons, Lyle, Devils Lake, Larry (Diane), Erskine, Minn., Robert (Kathy), Crookston, Gerald and Steven (Donna), both of Renton, Richard (Kerry), Storm Lake, Iowa, Allen (Joanne) Cullman, Ala., and Jay (Dyanne), Minot; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Phyllis Johnson, Hankinson, N.D.; and brothers, Alvin, Brooklyn Center, Minn., and LeRoy, Renton.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Everette; stepsister, Rosalia Hankel; and a granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake.

Visitation: Noon to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Devils Lake Cemetery.

Mae Erstad

CROOKSTON -- Mae Erstad, 81, Crookston, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in Riverview Hospital, Crookston.

Mae Benson was born May 26, 1917, the daughter of Ben and Evilina (Carlson) Benson, in Grand Forks County, Dahlen, N.D. She graduated from high school in Dahlen in 1935. She married Miles Gerald Erstad on Sept. 16, 1937, in Grand Forks. They lived in several communities in North Dakota and Minnesota before moving to Crookston in 1940. She worked for Skyberg and Aaker farms during potato harvest, and for Crookston Laundry. She later worked in the housekeeping department of Bethesda Hospital, and provided child care. Miles Erstad died April 20, 1975.

She is survived by sons, Orville (Marilyn), Othello, Wash., Gerald (Susan), East Grand Forks, Donald (Donella), Scranton, N.D., and Richard (Marilyn), Little Falls, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Janice Erstad, Connell, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lily Hitchen, Mojave, Calif., and Stella Hall, Park River, N.D.; and a sister-in-law, Irene Benson, Larimore, N.D.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; brothers, Roy and Alvin; and sisters, Esther Benson, Bertha Hanson and Evelyn Frey.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Evangelical Covenant Church, Crookston.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.

Earl 'Whitey' Gilbertson

HILLSBORO, N.D. -- Earl "Whitey" Gilbertson, 78, Hillsboro, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Earl Gilbertson was born June 27, 1920, the son of Gutfred and Bertha (Sorum) Gilbertson, in Hillsboro. He graduated from high school in Caledonia, N.D. He married Blenda Skansgaard on Dec. 31, 1947, in Moorhead. They made their home in Hillsboro. He retired from American Crystal in 1987.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Steven (Miriam), Bismarck; a daughter, Susan Tibiatowski, Fargo; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Arnold (Peggy) and Raymond, both of Hillsboro, Walter, Santa Paula, Calif., and Howard, Huntington Park, Calif.; and a sister, Gladys (John) Smaby, Fargo.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Wesley, Donald and Lloyd; and a sister, Eleanor Doeden.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hillsboro (Wildeman, Hillsboro).

Durwood C. Johnson

PEMBINA, N.D. -- Durwood C. Johnson, 69, Jamestown, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, in Jamestown Hospital.

Durwood Charles Johnson was born April 16, 1929, the son of Barney and Clara (Fitzpatrick) Johnson, in St. Vincent, Minn. He grew up and graduated from high school in Pembina. He spent seven years in and out of the Shriner's Hospital, Minneapolis, after he was injured in a fire. He went to UND, then started working construction with his father. He moved to Buffalo, Minn., where he worked construction. He married Audrey Henderson on March 24, 1980, in Buffalo. They moved in 1980 to Buchanan, N.D., where he was a self-employed carpenter. He retired in 1997.

He is survived by his wife; a grandson; two great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, John Johnson, Cavalier, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: Were held in Pembina.

Burial: Pembina Lutheran Cemetery (Eddy, Jamestown).

Lillian E. Burton

Lillian E. Burton, 87, formerly of 544 James Ave S.E., East Grand Forks, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1998, in Good Samaritan Nursing Center, Larimore, N.D.

Lillian Evangeline Hegg was born Jan. 3, 1911, the daughter of Christian and Etta (Charleson) Hegg, in Thompson, N.D., where she attended school. She moved to Grand Forks and worked as a housekeeper for the Clark and Roller families. She married Clarence Burton on Nov. 22, 1933, in East Grand Forks. They lived and farmed in rural East Grand Forks. Clarence Burton died Aug. 17, 1990.

She is survived by daughters, Anita (Loran) Carl, East Grand Forks, and Lois (Alton) Folkers, Larimore; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Clara Rusche Brandt, Grand Forks.

She was preceded in death by a son, Roger; brothers, James, Walter and Ralph; and sisters, Guida Wilson and Virgie Hegg.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks.

Visitation: One hour before services in the church.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks (Norman, East Grand Forks).

James E. Crane

CROOKSTON -- James E. Crane, 54, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Crookston, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, in Fairview University Medical Center, Minneapolis.

James E. Crane was born May 22, 1944, the son of Arthur and Olga (Lundeen) Crane. He graduate from high school in Crookston in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 2, 1964 to Aug. 31, 1988. He worked for Lockheed Martin Co., and served in their facility in Jeddah as an aerial port supervisor. He married Jane Bryan on April 25, 1989, in Limmasol, Cyprus.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Elizabeth (Joe) Puricelli, Barstow, Calif.; a son, James (Cherisse), Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandchildren; brothers, Earl (Susan), Yonkers, N.Y., and Dennis (Mary Jo), Milbank, S.D.; and sisters, Patsy (Earl) Abrahamson, Crookston, Carol (Lloyd) Erickson, Redwood Falls, Minn., Margaret (Donald) Gold, New Hope, Minn., and Linda (Gerald) Helgeson, Moorhead.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Jerry.

Services: 10: 30 a.m. Monday, Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston.

Visitation: One hour before services in the funeral home.

Goodwin W. Larson

DEVILS LAKE -- Goodwin L. Larson, 85, Devils Lake, formerly of Edmore, N.D., died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center, Devils Lake, where he had lived since 1996.

Goodwin Wallace Larson was born March 30, 1913, the son of Hans and Rellie (Kettelson) Larson, in Edmore, where he attended school. He later farmed there and worked for area farmers. He married Florence Sagen on Dec. 7, 1936, in Edmore. They lived near Edmore. Florence Larson died in 1939. After he retired, he moved into Edmore.

He is survived by a son, Duane (Glenna), Starkweather, N.D.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Albert, Edmore, Vernon (Darlene), Drayton, N.D., Edward (Tillie), Devils Lake, and Helmer (Alice), Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Living Word Free Lutheran, Edmore.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Edmore City Cemetery.
