Violet Schlagel
Nome, ND
Violet Schlagel, age 78, of Nome, ND, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, ND. A funeral mass was held on Monday, December 19, 2005 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fingal, ND with Reverend Timothy Johnson celebrant. Interment will be in Old Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery near Fingal, ND in the spring.
Violet Irene Christl, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Hanusch) Christl, was born on April 21, 1927 in Fingal, ND. Violet grew up on the family farm and graduated from Lucca High School in 1945. After her graduation from high school, Violet attended Interstate Business College in Fargo, ND and also worked in a department store. On July 18, 1948 Violet married Raymond E. Schlagel at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fingal, ND. Violet worked for a number of years for Ruud’s Market in Nome, ND. Violet was also a local news correspondent for local newspapers for 20 years. She was also an avid gardener, was a Member of the G&C Club, loved doing crossword puzzles, reading and collecting antiques. Violet was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society.
Violet is survived by her two children, Perry (Sylvia) Schlagel, Enderlin, ND and Brenda (Jonathan) Aase, Kathryn, ND; three grandchildren, Cory Ringdahl, Freemont, CA, Amy Schlagel, and Erin Zalumskis, both Jamestown, ND; two great-grandchildren, Sydney Zalumskis and Jarrett Zalumskis both Jamestown, ND.
Violet was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother.

Gertrude L. Suchla
Sheldon, ND
The funeral service for Gertrude L. Suchla, 72, of Sheldon, ND, was held on Friday, December 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sheldon with Father John Fallon officiating. Gertrude died December 5, 2005 at Innovis Hospital in Fargo.
Carole Bjugstad was organist for the service and pallbearers were Arnie Vaplon, Dan Spiekermeier, Greg Bergacker, Hugh Spiekermeier, Jeff Forslund, and Mark Spiekermeier. Honorary pallbearers were the Sheldon Coffee Crew. Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Gertrude was born on February 9, 1933 at Anselm, ND, the daughter of Laurence and Virgie Satterlee Kaspari. She attended rural Anselm, ND school and Sheldon High School, graduating in 1950. She married Eugene O. Suchla on June 12, 1952 at Sheldon. He died August 19, 1992. They farmed near Anselm. She was the office manager of GPG Grain Co at Anselm. from 1968 to 1981. They owned and operated the Keg and Kettle in Sheldon from 1981 to 1991. Gertrude worked at the Lisbon Eagles and also did respite care and was a foster parent.
Gertrude is survived by her mother, Virgie Kaspari of Enderlin; five sons, Wayne (Jeannie), Fargo, ND, Joe (Becky), Fargo, ND, Jim (Deyon), Leonard, ND, Todd (Raselle), Sheldon, ND and Steve (Sue), Moorhead, MN; seven grandchildren (3 step); two sisters, Connie (Tom) Spiekermeier, Sheldon, ND and Pat (Chuck) Forslund, Rosemount, MN.

Alice Stensgard
Enderlin, formerly Nome, ND
The funeral service for Alice Stensgard, 95, Enderlin, and formerly of Nome, ND, will be held at 2pm at Armstrong Funeral Home in Enderlin on Wednesday, December 14th. Alice died at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin on December 9, 2005.
Verna Armstrong will be the organist and Jack Armstrong soloist. Burial is at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Valley City, ND.
Alice was born October 15, 1910 at Hawley, MN, the daughter of Jacob and Randi Haugen Abrahamson. She attended rural Hawley, MN school. She married Arthur H. Stensgard in May of 1929 at Fargo. He died in 1993. They lived in Fargo until 1942 when they moved to Valley City. They moved to Nome in 1949.
Alice is survived by six sons: Arthur (Carol), Nome, ND, Charles (LuAnn), Oriska, ND, Jack, Fargo, ND, Allen (Barbara), Enderlin, ND, James (Barbara), Imperial, CA and Harvey (Julie), San Leandro, CA; three daughters: Betty Lee, Nome, ND, Beverly (Guy) Scalise, Carson City, NV, Carol Stensgard, Fargo, ND; 34 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren, and 14 great, great grandchildren; and one brother, Willard, Anoka, MN. She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard and a daughter, Marie Nelson.

Atha M. Falk
Lisbon, ND
Funeral services for Atha M. Falk, Lisbon, ND, were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lisbon on Saturday, December 3rd with Rev. Norm Anderson and Rev. David Killeen officiating. Jan Hansen was organist and Ruth Larson soloist. Atha died at the age of 94 on November 28, 2005 at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon. Burial was at Stiklestad Cemetery in rural Fort Ransom. Pallbearers were Tyler Falk, Terry Falk, Tiffany Falk, Amanda Falk, Nateal Falk and Carly Falk. Honorary pallbearers were nieces and nephews.
Atha was born November 26, 1911 in rural Fort Ransom, ND, the daughter of Gustav and Iverine Iverson Peterson. She attended Fort Ransom School, graduating from Fort Ransom High School. She also graduated from VCSU. She married George A. Falk on June 12, 1936 at Fort Ransom. He died February 5, 1996. They farmed near Fort Ransom until moving to Lisbon in 1982. She was a member of Progressive Homemakers Club and active in Parkside Auxiliary and Fort Ransom Senior Citizens.
Atha is survived by three sons, Ronald (Janice), Park Rapids, MN, Russell of Fort Ransom, and Arden (Stephanie) Fort Ransom; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren; two sisters, Olga Rasmusson, Fort Ransom and Loiselle (Henry) Dahill of Oregon. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary.

Norris D. Nelson
Lisbon, ND
Funeral service for Norris D. Nelson, Lisbon, ND, was held on Monday, December 5 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Lisbon with Father Jerald Finnestad officiating. Kathy Kwapinski was organist and music was by Sylvia Holmstrom and Christie Urbach. Burial was at St. Aloysius Cemetery. Norris died at the age of 79 on November 30, 2005 at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon.
Pallbearers were Mike Nelson, Paul Nelson, Gregory Rue, John Soderholm, Paul Soderholm, Tim Birkeland, Allen Birkeland, Dan Birkeland, Bruce Birkeland, John Suter, and Warren Wiltse.
Norris was born on March 30, 1926 in Lisbon, the son of John and Marie Cincera Nelson. He attended Lisbon school, graduating from Lisbon High School. He was in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He married Shirley Birkeland on April 6, 1953 in Warwick, ND. He farmed near Lisbon and started an apple orchard. He also worked at Bobcat in Gwinner and for Utke Well Drilling of Enderlin. They moved to Lisbon in 1976. He was a member of the Eagles and a lifetime member of the VFW. He served as state president of ND Horticulture Society and received the WODARZ award for outstanding achievement in horticulture.

Sibyl Mae Cavett
Lisbon, ND
A Non-Denominational Christian Body funeral service was held at the Lisbon Armory, Wednesday, February 1st for Sibyl Mae Cavett. At age 94, Sibyl died in Lisbon Area Health Services on January 28, 2006. She was a life-long resident of the Lisbon and Enderlin area.
At the service, Wilfred Goecke officiated, Kendra Nelson was organist and Darell and Dianne Evanson sang. Pallbearers were Sibyl’s grandsons. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.
Sibyl was born November 9, 1911 in Lisbon, ND to John and Minnie (Gunderson) Hitchcock. She grew up in rural Enderlin and went to the Liberty Consolidated School and graduated from Lisbon High School. On November 9, 1935 she married Alden Cavett of rural Enderlin and they spent the next 68 years on their farm in Moore Township. Alden passed away in 2003 and Sibyl moved to the Beverly Anne Assisted Living in Lisbon.
A gracious hostess, Sibyl’s kitchen was always a source of good food and friendship for everyone who visited the farm. Her concern and care for all was obvious, and she was always the first to coordinate a family picnic, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Sibyl was an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting until her eyes failed her. The quiet spirit, love of family and interest in the world around her made Sibyl a person that will be missed by family and friends.
Sibyl is survived by one daughter, Beverley (Lowell) Duval, rural Lisbon; three sons, Curtis, Mitchell, SD, Gary (Sue), Fargo, ND and Keith (Trudy), rural Nome, ND; a daughter-in-law, Carmen Cavett, Lisbon, ND, daughter-in-law, Lynn Cavett, rural Enderlin; niece, Marilyn Stram, Lisbon. Also surviving are two brothers, Bud (Margaret), Mesa, AZ, Wayne (Inez) Minneapolis,MN, a sister Edlyn (Don) Larson, Ellsworth, WI and sisters-in-law Hazel Burns of Bismarck, ND and Evelyn Hitchcock, Lisbon. Sibyl is survived by twenty-four grandchildren and thirty-eight great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents,John and Minnie Hitchcock, husband Alden, son Kenneth, three brothers, Maynard, Kermit and Kenneth (an infant) and sister Elaine (Oscar) Dahl.

Matthew D. Brantl
Valley City, ND
Matthew Daniel Brantl, 19, Valley City, died Saturday, January 21, 2006 from injuries suffered in a vehicle rollover near Mapleton, ND.
Matthew was born June 13, 1986, in Breckenridge, MN. He lived with his family in Wahpeton, ND and Enderlin, ND before moving to Valley City, where he graduated from high school in 2005. He was a graphic designer for Bridgetown Imprints, Valley City.
Matthew is survived by his mother, Brenda (Jim Veach), Valley City; his father, Daniel (Kathy) Brantl, Lisbon, ND; a brother, Jim, Valley City; a sister, Danielle Brantl, Valley City; a stepbrother, Justin Olson, West Fargo; a stepsister, Shannon Brown, Jamestown; his grandparents, Willie and Betty Dallmann, Valley City, Teresa Brantl, Breckenridge, MN; and his great-grandmother, Meilta Dallmann, Valley City.
The funeral will be on Wednesday, January 25th at 11am in St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Valley City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City in the spring.

Paul Hruby
Wilton, ND
Paul Hruby, 81, of Wilton, ND died January 12, 2006 in a Bismarck Hospital.
Paul was born on April 19, 1924 to John and Ksenka (Polensky) Hruby in Wilton, North Dakota. Paul attended grade school in Wilson Township School#1 and graduated from Wilton Public High School in 1942. Paul farmed and ranched all of his life in the northeast part of Wilton.
Paul married Marjorie Mae (Leben) of Wilton on June 23,1945. Paul was baptized, confirmed and a lifetime member of St’s Peter and Paul Ukranian Catholic Church of Wilton. Paul was a former member of the Wilton Lions Club, Wilson Township Board Supervisor and Wilson Township School Board.
Paul is survived by his wife Marjorie; six children: Mary (Everett) Olson of Minot, Barbara (late husband, Martin) Barthololmay of Enderlin, Kathleen (Denis) Draper of Walnut, Il., Douglas (Kathleen) Hruby of Bismarck, Laurence
(Lori) Hruby of Beulah,ND, Joan (Ted) Jirk of Fargo; two sisters, Martha (Gerald) Kemmer of Jamestown, Katherine Anderson of Wilton; two brothers, Joe (Evelyn) Hruby of Bismarck and Herman Hruby of Aberdeen, SD; nineteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ksenka (Polensky) Hruby, one son Thomas John, six brothers, Steve, William, Mike Peter, Alex, Harry and one sister Mary.
Fr. George Pruys was the celebrant and Paul Patrick Sr. was the Cantor.
Pallbearers were Kaleb Hruby, Jason Draper, Erik Olson, Aaron Bartholomay, Justin Feil and Samuel Bartholomay.
Following the service, burial was at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery.

John O. "Jack" Thorson, Jr.
Bismarck, ND
John O. “Jack” Thorson, Jr., 70, passed away at his home on February 20, 2006. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 24, 2006, at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church in Bismarck with Fr. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial was held at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery.
Jack was born in Minot on July 2, 1935, to John and Edna (Johnson) Thorson. As a child and young man, he grew up in McClusky but also had special years in Portland, OR and Bowbells, ND. Jack graduated from McClusky High School in 1953. After serving his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps, Jack attended and graduated from the University of North Dakota, where he received his B.A. and J.D.
Jack and his high school sweetheart Glennis (Rhoads) Thorson were married on December 14, 1956. They resided in Enderlin, North Dakota and Valley City, North Dakota, where he practiced law until his retirement in 2000. His interests were in Real Estate Law, served as legal counsel to city governments, school boards, and served the citizens of Ransom County as their States Attorney. He served as general counsel to Inter-Community Telephone Company for twenty-five years. He was a member of the Kiwanis, Elks, ND Bar Association and various other service organizations.
Jack loved hunting and fishing in North Dakota with his family and friends. He will be remembered by all as a gentleman with wit and charm, a person extremely devoted to his family and friends and someone who always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face. We all will truly miss his presence.
He is survived by his three sons, John O. Thorson, III (Cathy Jo), Montgomery, IL; Dr. Thomas A. (Barbara), Bismarck, ND; David (Sandra), Titusville, FL; his fourteen grandchildren; one great-grand daughter; and his sister, Jill Reiswig (Myrle), Minneapolis, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Edward C. Saar
Fargo, ND
Edward C. Saar, 94, Fargo, ND died on Friday, February 24, 2006 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.
Edward Carl Saar was born on January 25, 1912 at Portal, ND to Herman and Othelia (Schilke) Saar. He grew up on a farm near Leonard and attended school in Leonard. He farmed near Leonard all his life. Ed retired in the early 1980’s and moved to Barnesville, MN. In 1999, he moved to the Towers at Bethany Homes in Fargo, and in 2003, he entered the cares unit at Bethany.
Ed enjoyed fishing and cars.
He is survived by six siblings, Martha Nesemeier of Barnesville, MN, Lydia Newman of Milwaukee, WI, Rienhold (Irene) Saar of Enderlin, Fred Saar of Wahpeton, ND, Luella Thingstad of Grand Forks, ND and Caroline McLaughlin of Fargo.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Amanda Nesemeier and Hattie Luedtke.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 27th, at the West Funeral Home, West Fargo, with Rev. Phil Larson from Bethany Homes officiating. Music was by soloist, Craig Olson and organist was Jeanne Olson.
Honorary Pallbearers were Rodney Nesemeier, Larry Nesemeier, Dwight Nesemeier, Gayland Luedtke and Steve Luther.
Interment will be at Leonard, ND Cemetery.

Marion Verna Miller
Marion Verna Miller, 75, of Cheyenne died Saturday at United Medical Center – West after a brief illness with cancer. She was born August 5, 1930 in Enderlin, North Dakota and had lived in Cheyenne since 1999 with prior residence in Enderlin and Jamestown, North Dakota; Littleton, Colorado; Casper, Wyoming; Sheridan, Wyoming; and Mesa, Arizona.

Charles Theodore Storhoff
Charles Theodore Storhoff went to be with his Lord on February 28, 2006, at Best Care Home, an adult family home in Kent where he had resided for the past 16 months because of Alzheimers and Parkinsons. Charles was born December 22, 1924 at Eastedge (Barnes County), ND, to Adolph and Tena Storhoff. He attended school at Eastedge, and served in the US Army in Korea. He married Beverly Myhre in Enderlin, ND on August 31, 1947. They resided in the Nome-Eastedge communities until 1955 when they moved to Washington where he was employed by Boeing, and after trying out other employments he retired from Boeing in 1990. After his retirement he set up a work shop in his garage where he did wood-work, preferring to work with oak.

Edith A. Larson
A graveside service for Edith A. Larson, 77, of Sheldon, ND, will be held on Friday, July 14 at 10am at St. Paul Cemetery, rural Lisbon with Rev. Wayne Quibell officiating. Burial will also be here.
