Daniel L. McKay, 72, of Fargo, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Innovis Health in Fargo.

Daniel was born on March 28, 1938 in Fargo to John and Vivian (Backer) McKay. He grew up in Fargo and attended St. Mary’s grade school and graduated from Shanley High School in 1957. Following high school he graduated from the police academy and pursued a career in law enforcement and security.

Daryl Morton Geeslin Detroit Lakes, MN

Daryl Morton Geeslin died April 15, 2010. He was born December 1, 1922 to Morton Prescott Geeslin and Evelyn Murial (Billings) Geeslin in the living quarters of the Soo Line railway station in Gully Minnesota.

Opal Nelson

Lisbon, ND

Opal Nelson, 85, of Lisbon, ND died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Lisbon Area Health Services in Lisbon, ND.

Opal was born March 30, 1925 at Osakis, MN to Arthur and Judith (Mikkelson) Vangstad. She grew up and attended country school near Osakis and graduated from the Osakis High School. She attended Valley City Teachers College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in education. Opal taught at Ayr, ND, Hawley, MN, Forman, ND, Big Bend Township and also substituted in Lisbon, ND.

Willmor O. Johnson

Enderlin, ND

Willmor O. Johnson, 94, Enderlin, ND, died on July 22, 2010 at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin. A funeral service was held on July 26 at St. Petri Luthern Church, Nome, ND, with Rev. Bradley Edin officiating. Sylvia Schlagel was the organist and Nathan Johnson soloist.

Victor B. Moore Enderlin, ND

Victor B. Moore, 88, Enderlin, ND, died at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin on April 29, 2011. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 4 at 10:30am at Armstrong Funeral Home in Enderlin with Rev. Frank Dobos officiating. Burial will be at the Enderlin Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Josh Odom, Corey Lindemann, Scott DeFehr, Wendell Stern, Pat Anderson, and Jess Lindemann.

Roy Bonde

Enderlin, ND and formerly Kathryn, ND

Roy Bonde, 95, died at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, ND on April 28, 2011. A service was held at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Enderlin on Monday, May 2. The minister was Dwight Gylland. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in Valley City, ND.

Fargo, ND Formerly of Kindred, ND

Lois passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Essentia Health in Fargo, surrounded by her family, at the age of 81.

Bernice Agnes Brazel

Maple Grove, MN

Bernice Agnes Brazel was born September 20, 1915, in Glenwood, MN, to Courtiney and Mathilda Brazel. The family moved to Enderlin, ND, in 1923, where she was raised and graduated from high school.

Wayne Wilson

Fargo, ND

Wayne Wilson, age 88, Fargo, died Saturday at Sanford Medical Center Fargo.

Wayne was born in Cambridge, MN, on July 28, 1922 and moved to Falkirk, ND, when he was five years old. He graduated from Underwood High School.

Emilie A. Stordalen

Enderlin, ND

Emilie A. Stordalen, 73, Enderlin, ND, died on June 28, 2011 at Manor Care, Fargo, ND. A funeral service was held on Saturday, July 2nd at Trinity Lutheran Church in Enderlin with Rev. Terry Monson and Rev. Desiree Gold officiating. Burial will be at Pontiac Cemetery, rural Enderlin.

Virginia Maasjo

Valley City, ND

Virginia Maasjo, 89, of Valley City, ND, died in Sanford Hospital, Fargo, ND, on June 30th, 2011. Funeral services were held at 2 pm on July 6th at Our Savior’s with Rev. Randall Schlecht officiating. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Lorna R. Johnson

Enderlin, North Dakota

A funeral service for Lorna R. Johnson, 94, Enderlin, ND, will be held on Wednesday, September 28th at 10:30am at First United Methodist Church in Enderlin, ND, with Rev. Peg Zerface officiating. Lorna died at Maryhill Manor in Enderlin on September 24, 2011. Farrah Billing will be the service’s organist and Paul Billing soloist. Pallbearers will be Nathan and Barb Schlecht, LeRoy and Sara Dixson, Kathy Benneweis, Darrell and Rachael Oeder, and Kevin Oeder. Honorary pallbearers will be Lorna’s great grandchildren.

Lorna was born on November 4, 1916 in rural Enderlin, the daughter of John and Ida Iverson Pribbenow. She attended rural Enderlin School. She married Vernon C. Johnson on December 9, 1942 at Enderlin. He died August 29, 1997. They farmed near Enderlin until retiring in 1976. Lorna moved to Enderlin in 2006.

Lorna is survived by a son, Burle (Laurel) Johnson and a daughter, Iris Oeder, both of Enderlin; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha and son-in-law, Curt, and brothers Harold, Lloyd and Rollo.

Verna Holub

Enderlin, ND

Verna M. Holub, 93, formerly of Verona, ND and currently living at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, ND, died Sunday, February 19th, 2012. Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Tuesday, February 21st at Armstrong Funeral Home in Lisbon with a prayer service at 7pm. The funeral will be held Wednesday, February 22 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Verona with Rev. Thea Monson officiating. Marlene Dahl will be the organist and Virgil Olson soloist. Burial will be at Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery, rural Verona. Pallbearers will be Keith Olson, Neil Olson, Tod Holub, John Holub, Jim Smedshammer and Shad Thorfinnson.

Verna was born June 7, 1918 in Verona, ND, to James and Irene (Lemna) Pritchard. She graduated from Verona High School and received a teaching certificate from VCSU. Verna married Arthur F. Holub on November 14, 1939 in Moorhead, MN. They farmed near Verona. They moved to Lisbon in 2004. In 2007 they moved to Maryhill Manor in Enderlin. Art died on January 26, 2010. Verna was a 4-H leader for many years, taught Sunday Shcool and was a member of the Verona American Legion Auxiliary.

Verna is survived three sons, Lewis (Ava) Holub and Frank (Norma) Holub, of Verona, and Alvin Holub, Pelican Rapids, MN; two daughters, Rose (Rick Hanna) Olson , Lisbon, ND and Connie (Norris) Smedshammer, Verona, ND; 13 grandchildren Keith Olson, (Jackie Thomas), Lynn (Scott) Thorfinnson, Julie (Tom) Nord, Norma (Todd) Rasmusson, Neil Olson, Tod Holub, Tiffany (Randy) Heier, Teresa (Gabe) Line, Jody Smedshammer, James Smedshammer, Ashley (Eric King), Nancy Nord, and John Holub; 23 great grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren Chad (Heather), Lee (Jennie), Kari (Brian), Jamie, and Chris (Kelsey); sister, Lorrell Brodvold of Valley City; a brother, Willis (Mary) Pritchard of Oakes, ND.

Verna was preceded in death by infant son and and infant daughter; grandchildren James and Nicole Holub; brothers, Leo and Glen Pritchard and sisters Dolly Pithey, Evelyn Wiemann and Doris Hintzman.

Harold Teske
Montebello, CA

Harold Teske died April 14, 2012 in Montebello, CA, at the age of 96. Harold was born December 6,1915 in Enderlin, ND, to Adolph and Pauline (Krassin) Teske, German immigrants from Russia. He was the third born of four children, and the only son. He was baptized and confirmed at Pontiac Lutheran Church. As a young man, he loved hiking and hunting on the prairie.

After graduating from EHS in 1935, Harold joined the US Navy and spent 4 years serving on the destroyer USS Conyngham. Following his first tour of duty in the Navy he went to welding school in Minneapolis, MN. After that he and a friend drove to CA in a Ford Model A to find work. The Union Pacific Railroad hired Harold to work as a fireman on steam locomotives. When the US entered World War II, he reenlisted in the Navy and served for the duration of the war. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and said that Alaska was no colder than the winters in North Dakota.

After the war, Harold returned to the UP Railroad as a locomotive engineer, working until his retirement in 1980 with 40 years as a "lifelong railroad man". He maintained friendship with other railroaders and attended his last annual old-timers reunion last December at which he was the oldest.

In 1950 on a trip back to Enderlin for family events, Harold met Jean Ulmer. They fell in love, became engaged, and were married on August 20, 1950 at Christ Lutheran Church in Monterey Park, CA They moved into their "little gray house" in Montebello, CA, where they have lived for the last 62 years.

Harold and Jean raised four children, Lorna, Lyle, Paul, and Lucia. They have been blessed with seven grandchildren and 3 great·grandchildren. Jean continues to live in their house, and all four children live in the Los Angeles area.

Harold's retirement years were spent working in his yard where his green thumb was evident. He was the family auto mechanic, keeping many Toyotas running. He enjoyed the many happy times spent with the family and friends, and his church activities.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lilly Gosnell (Robert), Victoria Hallmark (George), and Lucia Utke/Fortina (Elmer Utke and Lou Fortina).

Funeral services and burial with military honors were at Rose Hills Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA, on April 19, 2012.

Leon Edward Thielges
Enderlin, ND

Leon Edward Thielges passed away June 5, 2012 at his home at the age of 54.

Leon was born March 30, 1958 in Jamestown, ND to Paul and Cordula (Kemper) Thielges. He grew up and attended school in LaMoure, ND. He was the starting guard on the legendary 1976 LaMoure State Championship team. He attended college at Minot State University for one year before transferring to Valley City State University earning degrees in Business Administration and Education. He played football, basketball and baseball on the college level including the basketball conference championship teams in 1979-80 and 1980-81. He was enshrined in the Viking Hall of Fame as a member of the 1979-80 team.

Leon married Deb Gunderson on June 28, 1980. They moved to Enderlin, ND in 1984 and began building their life together. Leon and Deb raised four beautiful children during their time in Enderlin. He coached and taught math in Enderlin for 28 years. His 1990 and 1996 teams earned state tournament berths. For the past 15 years he spent his summers crop adjusting.

Leon loved sports, hunting, fishing and traveling, the Green Bay Packers and the Boston Celtics. He especially liked going to sporting events of his kids, nieces, and nephews. His favorite part about hunting and fishing was taking someone new along. He liked to see someone shoot their first pheasant or catch a nice fish.

He is survived by his wife Deb, sons Jason (Cori), Fargo; Travis (Stephanie), Devils Lake; daughters Karla, Fargo; and Krista, at home; six grandchildren, Addison, Owen, Myles, Tayte, Maggie, and Kellen. Brothers Jerome (Gemma), Bellevue, WA; Raymond (Linda), LaMoure; Mark (Bernice), Ellendale; Martin (Jean), Bismarck; Doran (Jana), Moorhead, MN; and Brian (Mary), Urdandale, IA. Sisters Colleen (Irv) McFadden, Pocatello, ID; Janel (Ralph) Blount, Boise, ID; and Ellen (Bryan) Schulz, Bismarck. And his forever hunting buddy Griffin. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held at the Enderlin High School gymnasium on Monday, June 11th with Rev. Rick Loewen officiating. Casketbearers were Barry Hebl, Mark Shockman, James Warcken, Kevin Shockman, Dave Rufsvold, David Billing, Al Stolz, Tim Michaelson, Gary Adair and Joe Schmitz. Pianist was Farrah Billing. Soloists were Paul Billing, Lynette Schmitz and Gwen Thielges.

Burial was held at Rose Hill Cemetery in LaMoure.

Earle James Lean
Fargo, ND

Earle James Lean, 77, Fargo, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at Sanford Health Center.

Earle James Lean was born on May 16, 1935 to Ed and Jennie (Dahler) Lean on a farm northeast of Kindred, ND. He attended Kindred school system and graduated in 1953. From there, he entered the Army on January 19, 1954 and was discharged on January 18, 1956.

He married Evelyn Gill on March 19, 1959. He and Evelyn farmed and resided at which is now 40th Ave South in Fargo, where they raised their five children. He retired from active farming in 1985. He and Evelyn loved to travel and spent many hours with their grandchildren. Evelyn died on July 10, 2002, after 43 years of marriage. He then found a very special lady named, Jane Jalbert. They were married on November 19, 2005. He expanded his family with three step-children.

Earle loved spending time with his family. He rarely missed a music activity, sporting event or special activity of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid Bison/Sioux fan depending on who’s company he was in. He stayed active by visiting the Family Wellness Center several times a week. He loved spending time at his cabin on Lake Maud with family and friends. One of his favorite past times was eating out, especially, when it included lefse and lutefisk. He was always available for rides, help with projects, advice or just to talk. He served on the boards of Cass County Electric, Horace Elevator and the Red River Valley Fair. He was a long time member of Olivet Lutheran Church, serving on many boards and he never missed a Monday as a “money counter”. He was also a member of the Sons of Norway and the Eagles Club. He was inducted into the Kindred Hall of Fame with his 1953 State 2nd place basketball team.

Earle is survived by his wife Jane; daughters, Renee Atkinson; Susan (Jeff) Birrenkott, both of West Fargo; and Carolyn Lean, Bismarck; sons, David (Anise) Lean, Moorhead and Paul (Teri) Lean, Fargo; eight grandchildren, Sarah and Tyler Atkinson, Danielle Lean, Blake and Austin Birrenkott, Sadie, Noah, Ingrid Lean, and step- grandchild, Lauren Graftaas; Jane’s children, Jeff Jalbert; Jana (Brian) Bruhschwein, both of Horace; and Jason (LeeAnn) Jalbert, Dilworth; Jane’s grandchildren, Ben, Mya, and Jonathan Bruhschwein; Makenzie and Zachary Dukleth; Macey, and Eli Jalbert; his sister, Muriel Evenson, Fargo; and numerous other nieces, nephews and relatives.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; his parents; his sister, Lorraine Taylor; and an infant sister.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 11, 2012, at Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo. Burial was held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
