William Mehlhoff
UNDERWOOD -- William Mehlhoff, 70, Underwood, died Oct. 4, 1999, at his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison.

He is survived by one daughter, Heidi Thomas, Washington; his mother, Margret, Garrison; two sisters, Betty Flath and Estella Mehlhoff, both of Garrison; two brothers, Milo, Mandan, and Vernon, Velva; and two grandchildren. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Norman Zook
GARRISON -- Norman J. Zook, 72, San Francisco, formerly of Garrison, died Sept. 30, 1999, in a San Francisco medical center. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Garrison City Cemetery with graveside services held at a later date.

He is survived by three sisters, Alice O'Shea, Lodi, Calif., and Dorothy Krebsbach and Betty Burke, both of Garrison. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Florence Zwicker
COLEHARBOR -- Florence Zwicker, 83, rural Coleharbor, died Oct. 3, 1999, in a Bismarck hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood. Burial will be in Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Florence was born April 23, 1916, to Charlie and Minnie (Erickson) Okerson in Garrison. She grew up and attended school in rural Malcolm. She was the first baby baptized in Bethel Lutheran Church, which is now located at Buckstop Junction in Bismarck. Florence married Elmer Zwicker on Nov. 21, 1939, at the Underwood Church Parsonage. She was a very generous individual who loved gardening, raising poultry and making hundreds of covered hangers to give to friends and family. She will always be remembers for her wonderful meals, coffee and lunches where everyone was always welcome.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer; two daughters, Beverly and her husband, Don Helm, rural Denhoff, and Arlyce and her husband, Mike Malarkey, Bismarck; three brothers, Clarence and his wife, Blanche Okerson, Harold and his wife, Martha Okerson, and Ervin and his wife, Violette Okerson; three sisters, Anne Keel, Mildred and her husband, Gottlieb Henne, and Laverne and her husband, Arnold Schumaier; two grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Brandie, and David Malarkey.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Myrtle Hanson, Eleanor Keel and Evelyn Keel; and three brothers-in-law, Arnold Hanson, Ralph Keel and Elmer Keel. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Daniel 'Ferd' Walz
Daniel "Ferd" Walz, 92, 2027 N. Kavaney Drive, Bismarck, died April 8, 1997, at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. T. Richard Marcis Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Daniel Walz was born Feb. 17, 1905, at Freeman, S.D., the son of Daniel and Minnie (Rapp) Walz. He moved with his family to North Dakota in 1914, when they settled five miles north of Zap. He farmed with his father until 1929. On Oct. 8, 1929, he married Emilia Weigum in Zap. They farmed north of Zap until 1943 when they moved into Zap and operated a grocery and meat market. In 1946, they sold their farm and store and moved to Bismarck. Mr. Walz worked at the Bank of North Dakota until he retired in 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Emilia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Naemi and James Schmidt, Fargo, and Verna Mae and Darwin Durr, Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Lydia Kiehlbauch, Bismarck.

He is preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and two sisters.

Susan Bless
Susan Bless, 41, 2965 Vancouver Lane, Bismarck, died April 7, 1997, at her home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert D. Lynne officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Susan Brenno was born Aug. 2, 1955, in Powers Lake, the daughter of Ferol and Myrtle (Nordtvedt) Brenno. She was raised and educated in the Columbus area, graduating from Columbus High School in 1973. After high school, Susan attended Wahpeton State School of Science, where she trained in computer operations. Susan began working at the American Hardware Mutual Insurance Company in Minneapolis.

In 1975 she moved to Fargo, where she worked for Fairway Foods installing computer cash registers. Susan went back to school in 1978 and received a degree in accounting from Minot State University. She then moved to Bismarck where she worked for Montana Dakota Utilities.

Susan married Gary Bless Sept. 5, 1981, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. After their marriage, Susan stayed home to raise their children.

She was a Girl Scout leader, taught Sunday school and loved to make afghans. She also enjoyed traveling and the opportunity she had to visit the Scandinavian countries and the home of her great-grandmother. Most of all, she was very devoted to her family.

She is survived by her husband, Gary; her children, Eric and Kristin; her parents, Ferol and Myrtle Brenno, Columbus; one sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Brian Haldorson, Lone Tree, Colo.; her grandmother, Fern Brenno, Columbus; a very special cousin, Faye Uppman, Plymouth, Minn.; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael James Brenno.

The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society.

Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts, 92, Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan, died April 5, 1997, in the care center. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Vetter officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral chapel.

Emma Pfeifer was born June 13, 1904, in Anamoose, the daughter of Adam and Katrina (Adams) Pfeifer. She was raised and educated in the Anamoose area. Later in life, Emma met Ed Roberts.

Emma lived in various places, such as Williston and Kenmare. She lived in Bismarck for the last 35 years and worked at the Bismarck Hospital and Bismarck Airport.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting and occasionally traveling.

Emma will be missed by her loving family.

She is survived by two sisters, Pauline Stach, Fargo, and Alvina Aichele, Bismarck; one brother, Prosper Pfeifer, McClusky; one stepsister, Eva Heisz, Bismarck; and one stepbrother, Theobold Hoffer, McClusky.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Ed; four brothers; and three sisters.

Clarence Johnson
ALMONT -- Clarence Johnson, 82, Almont, died April 8, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. MDT Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Carson, with the Rev. Ken Trauna officiating. Burial will be in Carson Community Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. MST today at First Presbyterian Church, Carson.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Randy, Russell, Robbyn, Lee, Lisa, Scott, Shannon, Shawn, Jeff, Brad, Debbie, Darren and Dustin Johnson, Charisse and Kris Ann Jensen, Dean Danziesen, LeAnn Cortes, Tammy Chiarell and Diane Kovack.

Clarence was born Nov. 11, 1914, at his grandparents farm 10 miles south of Almont on the Heart River, the son of Charles and Manda (Twite) Johnson. Clarence was educated at the Lincoln Country School. He married Charlotte Feland Sept. 5, 1936, in Mandan. They celebrated 60 years of marriage last summer with a picnic and barn dance. Clarence and Charlotte worked for the WPA at the Thaine School for two years and then farmed 10 miles south of Almont for the past 58 years.

Clarence served on the Lincoln Country School Board for 25 years. He also served on the election board, the Agriculture Stabilization Committee for Grant County and was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Carson. Most recently, he was the area's weather reporter for Channel 12 TV. Clarence will long be remembered for his kindness, fairness, wonderful sense of humor and loving gentleness. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; six sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Deloris, and Dennis and Marlene, all of Almont, Dale and Bette, Hazen, Derald and Bonnie, and Darvin and Colleen, all of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Allen and Bonnie, Naperville, Ill.; one brother and sister-in-law, Omer and Irene, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Morville Skretteberg, Carson, and Bernice and Harlan Steinley, Bismarck; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Lowell. (Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

Donavan Dralle
Donavan Dralle, 87, Bismarck, died April 8, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Don was born Nov. 6, 1909, to Marshall and Florence (Miller) Dralle. He owned and operated the Moffit Store until 1946. Don was a farmer and livestock buyer for several years and a substitute mail carrier for 40 years. He loved cutting meat, was an umpire for the Moffit baseball team and enjoyed the outdoors and good music. He retired in 1979.

He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Bob Klein, Mandan; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Nora, Moffit; five grandchildren, Heather Klein, Mandan, and Jared, Abby, Micah and Ariel Dralle, Moffit; one sister, Irene Carlson, Bismarck; and two brothers and one sister-in-law, Marshall "Dutch," Sterling, and Bob and Marge, Albuquerque, N.M.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; his parents; two sisters, Twila Watne and Alice Dralle; one brother, Russel "Red" Dralle; and one grandson, Gary Klein.

Edwin Strand
HARVEY -- Edwin Strand, 80, Harvey, died April 6, 1997, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; one daughter, Laura McKinven, Coon Rapids, Minn.; one son, Larry, Blaine, Minn.; and four brothers, Walter, William and Elmer, all of Harvey, and Norman, Williston. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Peter Smith
BELFIELD -- Peter N. Smith, 92, Belfield, died April 6, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Belfield.

He is survived by four daughters, LaVerne Luptak and Georgiane Pedeliski, both of Dickinson, Janice Schlosser, Bismarck, and Mary Kuntz, New Rockford; three sons, Robert, Livingston, Mont., LeRoy, Belfield, and Carl J., Rapid City, S.D.; and one sister, Josephine Nielsen, New England. Herman Florian
DICKINSON -- Herman Florian, 79, Dickinson, died April 5, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. MDT today at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan.

He is survived by his wife, Juletta; three daughters, Judith Florian, Jamestown, Jean Johnson, St. Cloud, Minn., and Janel Florian, Seattle; two sons, Mark, Costa Mesa, Calif., and Michael, Renton, Wash.; two sisters, Gertrude Jovanovitz, West St. Paul, Minn., and Mary Wombwell, Springfield, Ill.; and one brother, Joe, St. Paul. Della Norby
KEENE -- Della Norby, 41, rural Keene, died April 9, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Glenn Fisher
STERLING -- Glenn Fisher, 64, Sterling, died April 8, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Frances Urness
LEEDS -- Frances Urness, 92, Leeds, died April 7, 1997, in a Devils Lake nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Leeds Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Ardell Olson, Minnewaukan; four sons, Reginald, Grand Forks, Dale, Leeds, Clarence Jr., Sacramento, Calif., and William, Denver; and one brother, Galen Fox, Chicago. (Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds)

Gordon Scott
A memorial service for Gordon Scott will be at 2 p.m. April 21 at United Methodist Church, Underwood.

Arnold Darkow
NEW TOWN -- Arnold W. Darkow, 75, New Town, died April 7, 1997, in the New Town health care center. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, near New Town.

He is survived by one son, Larry, Arizona; two brothers, Ted and Augie, both of Minnesota; and three sisters, Betty and Jeanette, both of Minnesota, and Mabel, California. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

Anne Nicholson
STEELE -- Dr. Anne Nicholson, 86, Steele, died April 8, 1997, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Steele, with the Rev. Marvin Winstryg officiating. Burial will be in Dawson Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Anne Engh was born April 29, 1910, in Kindred, the daughter of Carl and Tina (Anderson) Engh. She was raised and educated in Kindred, and graduated from Concordia College. She then attended the University of North Dakota. Anne received a doctorate in education from Buena Vista University in Iowa. She taught at rural schools in North Dakota, elementary schools in Minnesota and was elementary principal at Elbow Lake, Minn. She also taught at the University of Minnesota in Morris, Minn., and at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. She was a representative from Iowa on the National Board of Education.

Anne married Walter Loraine Nicholson, July 5, 1939. After their marriage, Walter and Anne lived in North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa and Arkansas. They moved back to Steele in September 1995.

Anne enjoyed traveling but her love was education. She loved teaching and children. She was a 4-H leader and earned a 50-year pin.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Glenn Terry, Minneapolis; two sisters, Cora Boyer, Park Rapids, Minn., and Thora Benham, Deer River, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two infant children, Stuart Wayne Nicholson and Barbara Louise Nicholson; her parents, Carl and Tina; three brothers; and four sisters.

Glenn Fisher
STERLING -- Glenn Fisher, 64, Sterling, died April 8, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be no visitation at the church.

Glenn was born July 3, 1932, on the family farm south of Mandan, the son of Emil and Alice (Philippi) Fisher. He married Ellen Lang, July 17, 1952, at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan. They farmed and ranched south of Mandan until 1970 when they moved to the Sterling area. He farmed and ranched there with his son and grandson until the time of his death.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Driscoll Men's Club and a past member of both Mandan Eagles and Moose clubs. He loved farming, caring for and working on the land. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, telling or playing a good joke and found particular satisfaction in mowing hay. Many will remember him for his gift of humor. To Glenn, family was of primary importance and he felt a special closeness to his grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by those who loved him, including his wife, Ellen; one son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Nadine, Driscoll; two granddaughters, Marie Wagner and her husband, Keith, Steele, and Peggy Fisher, Mandan; one grandson, with whom Glenn enjoyed working outdoors, Toby Fisher, Driscoll; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Iola Gifford, Flasher, and Alice and Lorraine Lundstrom, Mandan; and five brothers and sisters-in-law, Loretta Fisher, and Robert, both of St. Anthony, Emil Jr. and Mary, and Arnold and Regina, all of Flasher, and Orlee and Margaret, and Art and Esther, all of Solen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Clifford and Adolf; one sister, Garnet; two sisters-in-law, Clara Fisher and Regina Fisher; and one brother-in-law, Franklin Gifford.

Froydes Andresen
Froydes Orla Andresen, 79, 1111 N. First St., died April 10, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Eric Saxvik and Robert Lynne officiating. Graveside services and a family service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Reformed Church Cemetery, Clara City, Minn.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Froydes Kittelsland was born March 17, 1918, the daughter of John and Agnes (Johnson) Kittelsland, in Sacred Heart Township, Minn. She was raised on the family farm and attended schools in Sacred Heart Township. She graduated from Belview High School. She then attended advanced teacher's training in Renville, Minn. She taught school for six years in Renville and Redwood Counties. Froydes married Joe Andresen, Oct. 26, 1942, at Summit Oak Farm near Sacred Heart. They lived on the west coast during World War II, and later moved to Grand Forks and then to Fargo. They moved to Bismarck in 1953, where her husband operated Wylie Music Co. Froydes' joy in life was taking care of her family and sharing her time and talents in her church and community. She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, actively involved in starting the church library and working with youth activities. She also was instrumental in starting the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Joe; four daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and John Wetzel, Golden Valley, Minn., Jan and Mylo Candee, Bismarck, Joline and Steve Brown, Farmington, Conn., and Julie and Larry Koch, Chanhausen, Minn.; six grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler and Allyson Candee, Caitlin and Allison Brown, and John Koch; four sisters, Burnell Springer, Santa Maria, Calif., Emily Flak, Granite Falls, Minn., Joan Bergeth, Wassau, Wis., and Mary Haaland, Greenville, Pa.; one brother, Peter Kittelsland, Eden Prairie, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
