Lundina Mittleider

Lundina was born Sept. 12, 1911, near Hosmer, S.D., the daughter of August and Margaretha (Baumann) Schlichenmayer. The family homesteaded in the Choke Cherry Hills near Napoleon, and in 1918 moved to Valley Township, Kidder County. As Lundina was the eldest child, she was expected to carry the brunt of the workload, working with her father, August, in the fields at an early age. She married Theobold Mittleider, March 15, 1934, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Valley Township. They spent the first year of their married life with the Philip Mittleiders. They then moved the Philip Mittleider's summer kitchen (a 26-by-16 building originally used as the homestead building on Section 28 of Valley Township), and an old barn with a straw roof to the southeast quarter of Section 27 of Tappen Township. Here Theobold and Lundina made their home, farming with the Philip Mittleiders until they could establish their own farm. In the 1940s, they were able to purchase the land where the farm is today. In 1950, a granary was built, and in 1953 the basement for a new home was dug. At first the house consisted of only the basement with a flat roof, however, as this leaked, a peak was added in 1955. The latter years of the 1960s saw Theobold and Lundina alone on the farm. Due to their age and their desire to leave the family farm to one of their children, they asked their son, Marvin, to move to the farm in 1969 and help them. In 1974, they were finally able to complete construction of their home. Theobold passed away on Jan. 10, 1988, at the age of 76. Lundina continued to live on the farm pursuing her interests in gardening, raising all types of poultry, embroidering and helping in the bar. She sold the farm to her son, Marvin, in 1988. Lundina entered the Golden Manor Care Center in Steele in October 1996.

She was a member of Zion United Methodist Church.
