He is survived by his wife, Virginia; one son, Albert, Strasburg; three daughters, Pauline Gierke and Alice Mayer, both of Bismarck, and JoAnn Glass, Lincoln; one brother, Kasper, Jamestown; and two sisters, Johanna Wolf, Sandburn, Minn., and Barbara Anderson, Milwaukee. William Schmollinger

Genevieve Hansen
WILLISTON -- Genevieve M. Hansen, 89, Williston, died April 13, 1997, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston.

Fred Wagner
TURTLE LAKE -- Fred F. Wagner, 88, Turtle Lake, died April 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital after a brief illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Turtle Lake Baptist Church, with burial in Mercer Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; two daughters, Arlis Lundgren, St. Cloud, Minn., and Bonnie Volk, Selfridge; and one sister, Fredia Brown, San Leandro, Calif. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Alvhild Lien
Alvhild Lien, 86, Bismarck, died April 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Driscoll.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Alvhild Botnen was born Sept. 16, 1910, in Norway, the daughter of William and Rachel (Skorre) Botnen. She and her family came to the United States in 1911 and settled in Wilmar, Minn. The family moved to rural Tuttle in 1916, where she was raised and attended Chestina Township School. She graduated from Tuttle High School in 1929. During the summer of 1929 she attended a session at Dickinson State College and began teaching in rural Burleigh County that fall. She would go on to complete her bachelors degree in education at Valley City State College. Alvhild married Tilmer Lien, Dec. 31, 1933. He farmed in Lein Township, while she continued teaching. After his retirement, they moved to Steele. She retired from teaching in 1974 and they moved to Bismarck. Mr. Lien died in 1980.

Alvhild truly loved to travel. She had an opportunity to visit countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Retired Teachers Association, VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary. She volunteered at Medcenter One and helped make quilts with the church quilting group.

She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Esther, Bismarck, and Arthur and Joyce, Miles City, Mont.; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillian Nerby, Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Beverly and Harold Anderson, Valley City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Sylvia; and three brothers, Harold, Donald and Frank.

Norbert Muggli
DICKINSON -- Norbert J. Muggli, 77, Dickinson, died April 7, 1997, in his Mesa, Ariz., winter home. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. MDT April 26 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson.

Norbert J. Muggli was born May 26, 1919, in Richardton, to John and Elinor (Pallansch) Muggli. He attended St. Johns University, Collegeville, Minn., for three years of pre-law, received a law degree from University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and was sworn into the North Dakota Bar Association in June 1942. Two days later he was sworn into the U.S. Army and was attached to an ordnance division of the first Army in the European theater until December 1945. In the spring of 1946 he joined the Mackoff-Kellogg Law Firm in Dickinson. He served as Stark County States Attorney for four terms and in the state legislature for two sessions. Elected District Court Judge in 1964, he served the southwest judicial district until his retirement in 1981.

He was a member of Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, a founding member of DSU Foundation and served on the Board of Trustees of Queen of Peace Church.

On May 20, 1946, he married his college sweetheart, Doris Hennessy, in St. Mary's Church, Grand Forks. In May 1977, Norbert and Doris celebrated 50 years of love and marriage with their family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doni; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Pat Haws, Avon, Minn., and Jane Mugglie and Doug Paulson, Medora; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Lois, Waite Park, Minn.; five grandchildren, John, Jimmy and Annie Haws, and Katie and Joe Muggli; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sister Nillon Mugglie, St. Paul, Minn., and Noreen and Gene Carroll, Billings, Mont.; two brothers, Father Julius, St. Johns Abbey, Collegeville, Minn., and Father Florian Muggli, St. Joseph, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Sister Joanne Muggli and Sister Alexia Muggli. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Mary Buchfink
STANTON -- Mary Buchfink, 87, Stanton, died April 17, 1997, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton, with the Rev. Jay Spoonheim officiating. Burial will be in Stanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Mary was born Nov. 24, 1909, in the Coleharbor area, a daughter of Christoph and Maria (Roesler) Kempf. On Sept. 3, 1931, she married George J. Buchfink at Stanton. George died Nov. 22, 1974. Mary was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Evelyn, Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marjorie and Kenneth Dawes, Grand Forks, Connie and Stan Skarphol, Bismarck, and Joyce Enyart, Bismarck; one sister, Margaret Mehlhoff, Garrison; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton.

Milbern Arneson
DICKINSON -- Milbern Arneson, 86, Dickinson, died April 18, 1997, in a Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Joseph Stastny
Joseph W. Stastny, 78, Mandan, died April 16, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Kenneth Binder
Kenneth Binder, 58, Lockeford, Calif., formerly of Cathay, died April 14, 1997, in Acampo, Calif. Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Bowdon Country Seventh-day Adventist Church, rural Bowdon, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Gwyneth Hackett Binder; three daughters, Tracie Binder, Sacramento, and Sonja Binder and Amy Binder, both of Lockeford; one son, Gordon, Lockeford; two brothers, Derlain Binder, San Diego, Calif., and Allen, Minot; and two sisters, Donna Jerke, Galt, Calif., and Shirley Roberts, Hanford, Calif. Hazel Erickson
NEW ENGLAND -- Hazel E. Erickson, 77, New England, died April 18, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Lucile Sand
Lucile Sand, 82, Grants Pass, Ore., formerly of New Town, died April 14, 1997. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Grants Pass.

She is survived by her husband, Stranford; three sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Jayne, Grants Pass, Doug and Bernie, New Town, and Randy and Colleen, Bismarck; and six grandchildren.

Kathryn Peters
LARK -- Kathryn Peters, 90, Lark, died April 14, 1997, in Albuquerque, N.M. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Carson, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, Lark.

She is survived by one son, Dr. Jerry, Indonesia; and one sister, Shirley Roof, Albuquerque. (Hertz Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

Verna Workman
LIDGERWOOD -- Verna I. Workman, 88, Lidgerwood, died April 17, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church, Lidgerwood.

She is survived by her husband, Tom; three daughters, Nancy Wheeler, Rochester, Minn., Jan Promersberger, Fargo, and Chere Schultz, Bismarck; and two sisters. (Frank Family Funeral Home, Lidgerwood)

Freida Bittner
WISHEK -- Freida Bittner, 78, Wishek, died March 31, 1997, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lehr United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marty Toepke-Floyd officiating. Special music will be provided by Robert Erbele and Janet Wolf, with Susan Erbele serving as organist. Burial will be in Lehr Cemetery.

Pallbearers for the service are Bradley, Brian, Jamie, Brent and Bryce Bittner and Jeanette Nickisch.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Freida was born July 22, 1918, seven miles southeast of Lehr, the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Scherbenske) Ruff. She grew up on the family farm and received her elementary education in rural McIntosh County schools. Freida continued to live at home until her marriage to Herbert ``Herb" Bittner, Oct. 22, 1937, at Lehr. They returned to the Bittner family farm one mile south of Lehr, where they lived and farmed until Mr. Bittner's death on Sept. 5, 1978. Freida began working for Wishek Nursing Home in 1968, and worked there as a nurses aid for 22 years until she retired in 1990.

Freida is a member of Lehr United Methodist Church, and has been very active through the years in various church activities.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Leah, Lehr, and Darrell and Paulette, Dickinson; five grandchildren, Bradley Dean, Brian Dale, Jamie Lee, Brent Dean and Bryce Darrell Bittner; one great-grandchild, Tanner Jaxson Bittner; two sisters, Erna Miller, Moorhead, Minn., and Edna Landseidel, Park Rapids, Minn.; and one brother, Allen Ruff, Wishek.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; her parents; and one brother, Walter.

Roger Schell
RUGBY -- Roger C. Schell, 51, Rugby, died March 31, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Little Flower Catholic Church, Rugby, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Angeline; two sons, Duane and Joseph, both of Bismarck; two daughters, Laurie Odden and Renae Schell, both of Rugby; his father, Mike Schell, Rugby; one brother, Donald, Gillette, Wyo.; and three sisters, Elsie Hale, Willamina, Ore., Ilene Jaeger, Rugby, and Doris Pearson, Scottsdale, Ariz. Allan Berg
Allan Berg, 59, Mandan, died April 1, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Virgil Headrick
MOHALL -- Virgil W. Headrick, 82, Manitowoc, Wis., formerly of Mohall, died March 27, 1997, in the Manitowoc nursing home. Services were held March 31 at Reinbold and Pfeffer Family Funeral Home, Manitowoc, with burial in Nicolet Memorial Gardens, Green Bay, Wis.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel; two sons, Jim, Manitowoc, and Jack, Colonial Heights, Va.; one brother, Donald, Yuma, Ariz.; and one sister, Dorothy Asheim, Mohall.

Oscar Zimmerman
MINOT -- Oscar B. Zimmerman, 84, Minot, died March 31, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, with burial in Lehr Cemetery.

He is survived by one daughter, Joyce Van Ness, Minot; two sisters, Ida Koepplin, Lehr, and Bertha Aman, Fargo; and one brother, Jacob, Kansas.

Gerda Nelson
GARRISON -- Gerda Nelson, 86, Garrison, died March 31, 1997, in the Garrison nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Justin Sharp
WASHBURN -- Justin Robert Sharp, 14, Washburn, died March 31, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Edwin's Catholic Church, Washburn, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.

He is survived by his parents, Bob and Pam Sharp, Washburn; one brother, Joshua, Washburn; one sister, Klaudija Folk, Croatia; his grandparents, Bernie and Betty Sharp, Rapid City, S.D., and Harold and Carolyn Kosel, Mound City, S.D.; and his great-grandfather, Martin Ankerson, Pollock, S.D. MCGREGOR -- Marie Gudvangen, 74, McGregor, died March 29, 1997, in the Tioga hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, McGregor, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Melford; one son, Gordy, McGregor; one sister, Jenny Hanson, McGregor; and one brother, Olaf Berger, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

BERTHOLD -- Percy Stockdill, 83, Berthold, died March 30, 1997, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran church, Berthold, with burial in Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold.

He is survived by three sons, Rod and Glenn, both of Garrison, and Owen, Mandan; two daughters, Judy Erickson and Nancy Peterson, both of Carpio; two brothers, Lynn, Donnybrook, and Floyd, Garrison; and two sisters, Elsie Asmundson, Berthold, and Joyce Lallo, Seattle.
