Gene was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Bismarck, the son of Charles and Ruth (Madland) McCormick. He was raised on a farm north of Menoken. Gene liked to rope as a toddler. His first ropes were twine off the twine sacks. The first hard twist rope he got was from his uncle Lawrence Madland, when Lawrence left Menoken to go to Minnesota in 1934. Gene found his new rope much easier to throw. He practiced roping weeds, sunflowers, pigs, sheep and his friends until they got sick of it. When the wild turkeys came in to roost on the windmill, he would rope them and pull them down off the windmill instead of shooting them. Gene would proudly take them into his mother to cook. He was scolded when his mother's tame turkeys became his target. Gene attended school at Menoken until the 11th grade. Menoken High closed at that time, so he graduated from Bismarck High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 on an amphibious craft in the Pacific. Gene's first rodeo was in Mandan in 1943. He entered in the saddle bronc, bareback, steer wrestling and calf roping. When he returned from the Navy he began to rodeo again. He competed mainly in roping and steer roping. He decided to quit the rough stock so he could stay in shape for ranching. He won the North Dakota State Calf Roping championship in Dickinson in 1948.

Gene married Betty Jane (Small) Swenson, Nov. 8, 1952. In 1953 Bill Lindermann, president of the Rodeo Cowboys Association, appointed him to be the spokesman for the RCA in North Dakota. Gene was the North Dakota State Champion Steer Wrestler in 1953 and 1954. He won the state championship in roping and steer wrestling in 1955. Gene's last rodeo was at the Bismarck Civic Center in 1969. He entered in bulldogging, calf roping and team roping, and still made it to the pay window. They have been ranching south of Bismarck since 1952 on a Hereford ranch, which they still operate. Gene will always be remembered for his honesty, quick wit and his love for his grandchildren.

He was a life member of Bismarck Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, North Dakota Stockmens Association and National Cattlemen's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jane; his mother, Ruth, Bismarck; five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Don Hawley, Livermore, Calif., Vicki and Milo Trusty, Bismarck, Patty and Tim Mattson, Menoken, and Peggy and Roman Kauffmann, and Pam and Keith Fordahl, all of Bismarck; two sons, Gene Swenson, Dallas, and Monte Swenson, Bismarck; 16 grandchildren; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Harold and Margie, Menoken, and Jerry McCormick, Menoken; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Delton Schulz. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles; and one brother, Daniel.
