BEACH -- Sylvia Gertrude Eldridge, 81, Beach, died Aug. 25, 1996, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Beach, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Donald Kettner, Glendive, Mont., and Robert Kettner, Gresham, Ore.; one daughter, Shirley, Bismarck; and one sister, Gladys Howard, Silver Springs, Md. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)

Adeline Vogel
Adeline Vogel, 62, Jamestown, died Aug. 24, 1996, in a Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a St. Maria Verein will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.

Eugene Kassman
ROBINSON -- Eugene Marlin Kassman, 57, Robinson, died Aug. 24, 1996, in Robinson. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Robinson, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

He is survived by two brothers, LeRoy, Robinson, and Delmar, Fargo; and two sisters, Gladys Weers and Betty Stewart, both of Seattle. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Betty Scott
Betty Mae Scott, 65, Sedro Woolley, Wash., died Aug. 24, 1996, in a Mount Vernon, Wash., hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lemley Chapel, Sedro Woolley, with burial in Sedro Woolley Union Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Norman; two sons, Frank, Sedro Woolley, and Steve, Concrete, Wash.; two daughters, Betty Blouin, Spokane, Wash., and Barbara Shuler, Sedro Woolley; six brothers, Gene, Cecil, Arlo, Henry, Dale and Chester Clark; and one sister, Dorothy Hall.

Evelyn Schmalz
KILLDEER -- Evelyn Schmalz, 58, Killdeer, died Aug. 25, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killdeer. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Genevieve Johnson
MAKOTI -- Genevieve P. Johnson, 78, Makoti, died Aug. 25, 1996, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Ryder, with the Rev. Julie Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Ryder Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6-9 tonight and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

She was born Aug. 4, 1918, at Douglas, to Knute and Josephine (Timboe) Afdahl. She was raised and educated at Douglas. She married Larry Johnson Nov. 27, 1937, at Minot. They lived in rural Ryder. They moved to Roseglen in 1955 and she worked part-time at the grocery store there. They moved to Makoti in 1967. She did baby sitting in Roseglen and Makoti. She became a resident of the ICF unit at the Garrison Memorial Hospital in October 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Darrell, Makoti, Ardell, Chicago, and Bruce and Diane, Minot; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Gorlyn Wohlk, Douglas, and Karen and Joel Anderson, Bismarck; one sister, Ann Afdahl, San Francisco; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers and one son.

Pallbearers will be Clarence Behles, Tonya Anderson, Daryn Wohlk, Traci Haugen, Darnell Wohlk, and Chad Williams.

George Canfield
WILLISTON -- George Canfield, 77, Williston, died Aug. 24, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by one son, James, Seattle; three daughters, Lynn Burkhard, Renton, Wash., Susan Canfield, Seattle, and Barbara Burkhard, Minot; and one sister, Lyla Beth Smith. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Margaret Sprague
SOLEN -- Margaret "Marge" Sprague, 76, Coconut Creek, Fla., formerly of Solen, died July 22, 1996, at the home of her daughter in Hendersonville, Tenn. Burial was in Alabama.

Marge Schwengler was born Dec. 16, 1919, to Adam and Regina (Heintz) Schwengler in the Solen area where she was raised and educated. She married Lloyd Sprague in 1943. They made their home at numerous bases throughout the United States during Lloyd's Air Force career. Lloyd died in 1991.

Marge was a fun-loving person who liked Texas Sellouts (North Dakota rummage sales).

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and John Pascu, Hendersonville; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren in Alabama; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Rose and Tony Glasser, San Mateo, Calif., Josephine and Bill Himmelspach, Betty Swenson, Bismarck, and Alice and Bill Ereth, Mandan; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Tony and Veronica, Laurel, Mont., Adam and Ann, and Eugene and Joyce, all of Park Rapids, Minn., Louie, Bismarck, Pete and Lucille, Minneapolis, Jake and JoAnn, Fargo, Bill and Linda, Mandan, and Eva Schwengler, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her step-mother, Elizabeth (Messer) Schwengler; one grandson; one brother, Stanley; three brothers-in-law, Roy Buchholtz, Bill Vogel and Chick Swenson; and one sister-in-law, Frances. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Magdalena Sperle
NAPOLEON -- Magdalena Sperle, 78, Napoleon, died Aug. 26, 1996, in the Wishek hospital. Arrangements are pending at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

Wesley Anderson
BALDWIN -- Wesley E. Anderson, 58, Eugene, Ore., formerly of Baldwin, died Aug. 23, 1996, in Junction City, Ore. Graveside services will be at 11-30 a.m. Friday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with the Rev. Bradley Stoltenow officiating, with military rites by Roy C. Wagner Amvets Post No. 9, Bismarck.

Wesley was born Dec. 16, 1937, in Wilton, the son of Henry Anderson and Leona Buchholtz Anderson. He was raised and educated in that area. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Jan. 30, 1956, and was honorably discharged Jan. 29, 1964. Wesley devoted his last 20 years as a food supervisor to the Eugene Mission for the Homeless.

He will be dearly missed by his family, which includes his mother, Leona Anderson, New Salem; three sisters, LaDonna Hilsendeger, Bismarck, Norma Kruckenberg, Cooperstown, and Darlene Anderson, Wilton; and one brother, Martin; and good friends, Ernie Unger and Galen Kleven; and the many lives that he touched by his 20 years with the homeless.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Leon. (Boelter Funeral Home)

Frieda Hagberg
Frieda S. Hagberg, 105, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died Aug. 27, 1996, in the nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dick Owens officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Frieda S. Daebel was born May 7, 1891, in Blue Island, Ill., the daughter of Karl and Emilie (Aschbrenner) Daebel. She was raised and educated in Illinois. Frieda attended nurse's training in Kenmare. There she met and married Carl Hagberg, a pharmacist. They lived in New Leipzig, where they owned a drug store. They moved to Bismarck in 1926. Frieda worked nearly 30 years at Q&R Clinic as a registered nurse and as a private duty nurse at Bismarck Hospital. She was a resident of the Kensington before moving to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in 1992.

Frieda enjoyed knitting, crocheting and Bible study groups. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Quilting Group and various nursing organizations.

She is survived by three nieces, Laura Owens, Arkansas, and Grace and Dorothy Daebel, both of Illinois; and the Eleanor and Eugene Aune family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband in 1963.

Pauline Schatz
LINTON -- Pauline Schatz, 90, Linton, died Aug. 27, 1996, in the Linton hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Linton, with burial in Linton Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Irene Ohlhauser, Linton, and Violet Hochhalter, Bismarck; one brother, Erwin Ehrman, Mandan; and one sister, Adeline Fischer, Linton. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Weston Wald
NAPOLEON -- Weston John Rath Wald, the infant son of Carmen Rath Wald and John Wald, Napoleon, was born and died Aug. 28, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, with the Rev. Richard Spiedel officiating. Burial will be in Wishek City Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the funeral home.

He is survived by his parents, Carmen Rath Wald and John Wald; one sister, Whitney; two brothers, Wyatt and Wade Rath Wald, all at home; and his grandparents, Edwin and Helen Rath, Wishek, and Victor and Barbara Wald, Napoleon.

Rose Fandrich
WISHEK -- Rose Fandrich, 82, Wishek, died Aug. 28, 1996, in the Wishek hospital. Arrangements are pending at Haut Funeral Home, Wishek.

Marvin Torno
GARRISON -- Marvin Torno, 57, died Aug. 27, 1996, in the Watford City nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda, Dickinson; five daughters, Tammy Erickson, Minot, Colleen Kubler, Minot, Collette Torno, Minot, Tina Grade, New Salem, and Wendy Torno, Dickinson; his mother, Nathalia Torno, Garrison; and two sisters, Viola Knuth, Balfour, and Alice Torno, Littleton, Colo. Grace Wisness
MADDOCK -- Grace Wisness, 944, Maddock, died Aug. 27, 1996, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock. Further arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Osvald Langdalen
WILLISTON -- Osvald Langdalen, 75, Williston, died Aug. 26, 1996, in a Minot hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston, with burial in Wildrose Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by two sisters, Marie Baxter and Alice Miller, both of Seattle; and one brother, Elvin, Wildrose.

Ginger Sundby
WILLISTON -- Ginger Sundby, 67, Williston, died Aug. 27, 1996, at her home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandy Gorog, Denver, and Toni Jorgenson, Williston; three sons, Ed, Lynn and Wade, all of Williston; and one brother, Joe Thielman, San Diego, Calif. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Walter Hoffman
WILLISTON -- Walter Hoffman, 80, Williston, died Aug. 27, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 9 a.m. Friday at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

He is survived by two daughters, Rosemary Watkins, Guernsey, Wyo., and Tammy Lillegard, Selfridge, Mich.; three brothers, Herbert, McClusky, Harvey, Rugby, and Robert, Bismarck; and two sisters, Vivian Bauer, Bismarck, and Marge Lyman, Jamestown.

James Rothmann
James B. Rothmann, 59, Bismarck, formerly of Washburn, died Aug. 28, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home after a long illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Washburn Baptist Church, with the Revs. Rick Torkelson and Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Washburn Baptist Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

James B. Rothmann was born Oct. 3, 1936, at Washburn, to Matt M. and Bertha (Giedd) Rothmann. He grew up on his parent's farm five miles north of Washburn, where he attended rural school. He graduated from Washburn High School in 1955. As a young man he farmed with his father and later assumed ownership of the farming operation.

He married Marvadean Schacher, April 12, 1958, at Washburn. They made their home in Washburn, where Jim was a member of the Washburn Baptist Church and had served on the board of trustees and was active in the Men's Quartet. He enjoyed hobbies of hunting and fishing.

He retired in 1984 due to his failing health and became a resident of the Bismarck Baptist Home in December 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Marvadean; one daughter, Patti Rothmann, Bismarck; one son, James, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Inez and Melvin Nielsen, Minot; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends in Washburn and at the Bismarck Baptist Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.

The family prefers memorials to Bismarck Baptist Home.

Sally Klausing
Sally Klausing died of cancer in Albuquerque, N.M., Aug. 14, 1996. She was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Carrollton, Mo., to Alonzo W. Adams and Christine Clark Adams. Glen W. Huddleston was her stepfather.

Sally graduated from Carrollton High School and the University of Missouri in Columbia. She married Robert L. Klausing in Carrollton, Sept. 15, 1951. During Robert's employment with the U.S. Geological Survey, the family lived in California, North Dakota and New Mexico.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, 2725 Pennsylvania N.E., Albuquerque, N.M., 87110; two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Roger Miller, Bismarck, and Mary Laura and Michael Williams; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert Evan and Sherry, Lee's Summit, Mo., and David Lucien, Dallas, Texas; and five grandchildren, Kendra and Zane Miller, Adam and Jenna Klausing and Sarah Williams.

Other survivors include her treasured sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Fred Long; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Hannah and Terry Cheak; one nephew, Keith Long; and four nieces, Ellen Long, Marilee Long, Marta Bullard and Dina Kellett.

Cremation has taken place and a private family ceremony was held in Albuquerque. Private graveside services will be scheduled for a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carrollton.

In light of Sally's love for books, words and language, the family suggests memorial contributions to the library of the donor's choice.

George Mahowald
GARRISON -- George Mahowald, 91, Garrison, died Aug. 28, 1996, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Gene Lindemann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post No. 49, Garrison.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Friday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before rosary and services. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

George was born Aug. 8, 1905, at Mankato, Minn., to Joseph and Anna (Kaiser) Mahowald, and moved with his parents to Garrison at the age of 2. He was a 1924 graduate of Garrison High School and worked at Piper Lumber Co. for a year before becoming employed at Mahowald Grocery Store. He received a bachelor of science degree from Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1931. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1944. He served as postmaster at Garrison from Dec. 28, 1938-June 30, 1974, when he retired and lived on his lake home. He became a resident of the ICF Unit of the Garrison Memorial Hospital in September 993.

He was a 53-year member of Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post No. 49, and was a past commander. He also served as Boy Scout Clubmaster for many years and was a life member of Garrison Fire Department. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and a fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus, and a member of Garrison Investors.

He is survived by one sister, Catherine Heinle, Garrison; 11 nieces and nephews; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Pallbearers will be Allan Heinle, Dean Heinle, Richard Heer, Chad Heer, William Mahowald and Gary Lagge.
