Donald Smith
Donald R. Smith, 55, formerly of Bismarck, died Dec. 8, 1996, in Los Angeles. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and will continue Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of services.

Donald was born June 13, 1941, in Bismarck, the son of Roy D. and Marjorie (Doll) Smith. He grew up in Bismarck and graduated from St. Mary's High School. Donald served in the U.S. Navy and worked in the Los Angeles area.

He is survived by his mother, Marjorie E. Smith, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Jack Freas, Milan, N.M.; and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Mary, Mineral Wells, Texas, Bernie and Joann, Mitchell, S.D., Patrick and Marcie, Bismarck, and Michael and Jeanne, Williston.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy in 1993.

The family prefers no flowers.

Carl Gierke
Carl Gierke, 85, 1513 East Ave. C, Bismarck, died Dec. 10, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Carl was born Nov. 11, 1911, in Bismarck, the son of Herman and Dena (Mueller) Gierke. He owned and operated Gierke & Paul Garage until his retirement in June of 1981. Prior to that, he worked in Glacier National Park. He then worked for Chevrolet Garage and he and three brothers owned and operated Gierke Brothers Auto Repair Shop. He married Doris Miller in October of 1958. She died in 1977. Carl resided in Bismarck until the time of his death.

Survivors include one sister, Bernice Jacobson, Portland, Ore; also many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all of them.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; four brothers; and five sisters.

Arlaine Maas
Arlaine Maas, 62, Mandan, died Dec. 11, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation begins after 9 a.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Arlaine was born Aug. 15, 1934, in New Salem, the daughter of Walter and Pauline (Kessler) Reiner. She was raised in the Zap area and graduated from Zap High School in 1953. She obtained her teaching certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College and taught in rural schools south of Mandan. She married Norman Maas March 4, 1955, in Zap. She worked for George's Bakery in Mandan for many years and was employed by Kmart in Bismarck for 20 years, having only recently retired.

She loved to visit with all her friends and acquaintances, but loved spending time with her family and grandchildren the most. She was always ready to lend a helping hand when asked.

Arlaine will be deeply missed by those who survive her including, two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeri and Rod Paulson, Garrison, and Susan and Ivan Kary, Solen; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Kelly and Patricia, Harwood, and Blaine and Bill, both of Mandan; five grandchildren, Kayla Kary, Mitchell Paulson, Eric and Brian Maas and Kimberlee Kary; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Ardel Lang, Minot, and Loretta and Leo Mann, Beulah; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Feland, Flasher, and Esther Maas, Renton, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman who died Oct. 1, 1977; two grandchildren, Isaiah and Matthew Paulson; and one brother, Norbert Reiner.

The family prefers memorials to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Eleanore Vastag
Eleanore Vastag, 78, Faulkton, S.D., formerly of Hebron, died Dec. 11, 1996, in Faulkton. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at St. John United Church of Christ, Hebron, with the Rev. Thomas A. Zuhlke officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Hebron.

Visitation begins at 5 p.m. today at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.

Eleanore Hartmann was born Dec. 30, 1917, at Hebron, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Bender) Hartmann. She was raised and educated in rural Hebron. She married Albert Vastag Oct. 8, 1940, at Richardton. Following marriage they lived on a farm north of Richardton. In 1947, they moved to Hebron where she resided and raised her family. She moved to a nursing home in Dickinson and in 1988 to Faulkton, S.D., where she had resided since.

She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Hebron.

She is survived by five sons, Harold, Green Bay, Wis., Ray and Roger, both of Indianapolis, Ind., Duane, Mandan, and John, Brandon, S.D.; five daughters, Ruth Sailer, Zap, Dorothy Schneeweis, Hebron, Darlene Murphy, Mesa, Ariz., Karen Gunsch, Laramie, Wyo., and Betty Marthaller, Oakes; two brothers, Ervin Hartmann, Sturgis, S.D., and George Hartmann, Sunnyvale, Calif.; and five sisters, Hilda McCormick, Ortonville, Minn., Anna Gietzen, Glen Ullin, Viola Nolet, De Kalb, Ill., Martha Hartmann, Bismarck, and Frieda Kinnischtzke, Apple Valley, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and one sister.

Ida Gardner
JAMESTOWN -- Ida Gardner, 64, Jamestown, died Dec. 12, 1996, in a Valley City nursing home. A private funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown, with the Rev. Elmo Tahran officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ida Adeline Patzer was born Jan. 6, 1932, at Hurdsfield, N.D., the daughter of Adam and Milicina (Knopp) Patzer. She attended the Hurdsfield Public School where she received her elementary education and grew to womanhood in the vicinity. She moved to Jamestown where she worked at the Jamestown Cafe.

Ida married Douglas Gardner Aug. 13, 1950, at Hurdsfield. They made their home in Jamestown where she was a housewife, homemaker and the neighborhood mom. Following the death of her husband on Oct. 22, 1996, she entered the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City.

She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

She is survived by four children, Pamela (Mike) Thompson, Atlanta, Harvey (Kathy) Gardner, Spiritwood, and Lloyd (Jan) Gardner Jr., and Brent (Cheryl) Gardner, all of Jamestown; two grandchildren; and four brothers and two sisters, Herbert Patzer, Washburn, Otto Patzer, Hurdsfield, Rueben and Alfred Patzer, both of John Day, Ore., Anne Hoff, Bowdon, and Irene (Mike) Miller, Dickinson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and one sister.

Josephine Rousseau
NEW SALEM -- Josephine Rousseau, 92, New Salem, formerly of Dodge, died Dec. 10, 1996, in the New Salem nursing home. Graveside services will be in Golden Valley at a later date.

Josephine was born June 4, 1904, at Roseglen, N.D., the daughter of Edward and Margaret (LaRockue) Rousseau. She received her teaching certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College. Her teaching career spanned 51 years. She taught music as well as all other subjects from grade school through high school. She also served as county superintendent of schools for Billings County.

She is survived by one daughter, Jacqueline Anderson, Dallas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one grandson; and 13 brothers and sisters. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

August Miiller
ANAMOOSE -- August Miiller Jr., 72, Anamoose, died Dec. 11, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Martin Lutheran Church, Anamoose. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, Anamoose; four sons, Lloyd, Hazen, Arlen, Minot, Leon, Fargo, and Bob, Wilton; two daughters, Leela Sprenger, Denhoff, and Julie Ponzer, Menoken; and two sisters, Marie Knudtson, Harvey, and Sarah Samual, North Fond du Lac, Wis. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Elna Anderson
WILLISTON -- Elna R. Anderson, 83, Williston, formerly of Tioga, died Dec. 11, 1996, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Tioga. Burial will be in United Cemetery, Tioga.

She is survived by one brother, Nels, Tioga and Bismarck; and three sisters, Anne Irwin, Seattle, Ruby Fudge, Downey, Calif., and Ethel Jonnum, Lancaster, Calif. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Herbert Pavlicek
DICKINSON -- Herbert H. Pavlicek, 70, Dickinson, died Dec. 11, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson.

He is survived by three daughters, RoxAnne Moore, Grand Forks, Regina Sadowsky, Dickinson, and Roberta Dukart, Medora; two sons, Robin, Mesa, Ariz., and Rodney, Wilsonville, Ore.; and one sister, Patsy Krawczyk, Jamestown. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Dwight Jacobsen
DICKINSON -- Dwight Jacobsen, 49, Dickinson, died Dec. 11, 1996, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Burial will be at 3 p.m. CST Sunday in Rural Lutheran Cemetery, Flaxton.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia, Dickinson; one daughter, Christine Wegh, Dickinson; one son, Tim, Fargo; two brothers, Dale, Dickinson, and Dennis, Burlington; one sister, Donna Roos, Minot; and his parents, Etlar and Elaine Jacobsen, Flaxton. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Arvid Erickson
KULM -- Arvid O. Erickson, 87, Kulm, died Dec. 10, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Kulm Assembly of God Church. Burial will be in Kulm Assembly of God Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel, Kulm; one daughter, Irene Runkle, Port Charlotte, Fla.; three sons, Donald, Kulm, Melvin, Minot, and Warren, Chehalis, Wash.; and one brother, Axel, Sweden. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm)

Carly Marron
Carly Marron, 4, Mobridge, S.D., died Dec. 11, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. CST Monday at Elk Horn Congregational Church, Little Eagle, S.D. Burial will be in Elk Horn Cemetery, Little Eagle.

She is survived by her mother, Cornella Cutler, Mobridge, S.D.; her father, Travis Marron, Moorhead, Minn.; four sisters; and one special sister, LaSheila Marron, Fort Yates; one brother, DeShante Laundreaux, Mobridge; and her grandparents, Verdellian Marron, Grey Cutler and Phyllis Ireland. Harlan Andrews
GARRISON -- Harlan Andrews, 61, Garrison, died Dec. 11, 1996, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison. Further arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Shirley Iron Road
CANNON BALL -- Shirley Iron Road, 44, Cannon Ball, died Dec. 12, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Allan Unterseher
Allan Edgar Unterseher, 60, Mandan, died Dec. 12, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Richard Hagestuen and Charles Taft officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Allan was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Hazen, the son of Jacob and Edna (Kilber) Unterseher. He attended school north of Kilber and Hazen. He married Cary Fetch, March 3, 1964, at Beulah. They lived in Hillsboro and Drayton until moving to Mandan in 1977. He worked for James J. Igoe Construction for 23 years until Igoe's retirement. He then was employed as a superintendent with Wanzek Construction until his disability.

He was a 20-year member of the Moose. He enjoyed camping and snowmobiling with his family and friends. He also loved taking care of his fruit trees, enjoyed gardening and had a great talent for woodworking. Most of all he adored his children and grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by those who survive him, including his wife, Cary; one daughter, Melissa Unterseher, Mandan; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael, Mark and Tami, and Mitchell, all of Mandan; three grandchildren, Jael, Aaron and Chance; his mother, Edna Unterseher, Beulah; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Marlene and Gene Buehner, Halliday, Luella and Albert Kroh, Bismarck, and Bonnie and David Horn, Longmont, Colo.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Connie, Velva, and Arvid and Virginia, Longmont; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, William and Barbara Fetch, Beulah; and special friends, Leo and Janet Wanzek, Jay Helmick and Johnny Buchman.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jacob.

Kenneth Feldner
Kenneth V. Feldner, 77, 404 W. Main St., Mandan, died Dec. 13, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Ray Martin officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday and until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Kenneth was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Donnybrook, the son of Carl and Mathilda (Huth) Feldner. He was raised and educated in the Donnybrook area. He was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army and served as an Army engineer in the European Theater from 1942-1946.

On Sept. 21, 1946, he married Etta Laub in Bismarck. They farmed together in the Donnybrook area, and he served as a game warden in the Bowman and Carson areas. Later he was a special investigator for the Stockmen's Association in Bismarck and was a patrol officer for the Truck Regulatory Office in Bismarck. In Devils Lake he was a probation officer and later on served as the chief of detectives.

Kenneth was a lifetime member of the Peace Officers Association and the Mandan American Legion Club.

He is survived by his wife, Etta; one son, Rodney, Mandan; one daughter, Deborah Feldner, Salem, Ore.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen and Leslee, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Lloyd and Ellen, Manhattan, Mont.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Myrtle and Lester Kielsmeier, Denver.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Fred, Carl, Walter, Adolph, Arthur and Otto; and one sister, Minnie O'Neil.

Mary Anderson
Mary Anderson, 98, Bismarck, died Dec. 12, 1996, at her home. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in Starkweather.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Mary was born Nov. 21, 1898, near Frazee, Minn., the daughter of Charles Holmes and Lottie Ione (Pengra) Wyman. She married Alexander Anderson in 1926 at Northwood. They lived in the Starkweather area for more than 50 years. She moved to Bismarck after the death of her husband in 1980.

She is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Kathleen and Willard Hultgren, Minnetonka, Minn., Esther Lutz, Longmont, Colo., and Charlotte Anderson, Bismarck; one sister, Vivian Bright, Northfield, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.

The family prefers memorials to First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, or the Salvation Army.

Geraldine Bornhoeft
FLASHER -- Geraldine Bornhoeft, 73, Flasher, died Dec. 12, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Bertha Rivinius
Bertha Rivinius, 86, Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Monday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. Further arrangements are pending.

John Stewart
GILBY -- John Colin Stewart, 96, Gilby, died Dec. 13, 1996, in an East Grand Forks, Minn., nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Gilby Presbyterian Church with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, Gilby.

He is survived by four sons, John, Mandan, Robert and William, both of Gilby, and James, Elkhart, Nev.; and one sister, Doris McPhail, Long Beach, Calif. (Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks)
