Benjamin Ulrich
Benjamin Ulrich, 94, 901 E. Bowen Ave., died Dec. 14, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, with burial in Ellendale Cemetery. The Rev. Ray Kelch will officiate.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Benjamin was born June 30, 1902, near Ashley, the son of George and Katherine Ulrich. He married Magdalena Jerke, Nov. 1, 1928, in Ashley. They farmed south of Ashley. In 1934, they moved to Lodi, Calif., where Ben worked as a carpenter, and Magdalena worked in a cannery. They retired in 1967. They returned to Bismarck in August 1993.

He is survived by one brother, Rudolph; one sister, Tillie Leicht; and 33 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; four brothers; and sister; and six nieces and nephews.

Florence Renfrow
MERCER -- Florence F. Renfrow, 70, rural Mercer, died Dec. 15, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Susan Reinhiller officiating. Special music will be provided by Joan Anderson, Sue Schlafmann and Paul Singer. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Red Trail Homemakers Club.

Active pallbearers will be Carl Setterlund, Christian Kuleck, Justin Rogstad, Glendon Philbrick, Richard Philbrick and Delmar Rodgers.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Florence Mae (Fandrick) Renfrow was born March 25, 1926, in rural Turtle Lake, to John and Lulu Belle (Stephenson) Fandrick. She attended town school in Turtle Lake, as her father maintained that town school was better. She graduated in 1943 and then attended college in Minot and received her teaching certificate. She then taught rural school in the Veeders School District southwest of Turtle Lake for three years. She married Charles Renfrow on July 1, 1946, at Bottineau. They celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. They lived and dairy farmed south of Turtle Lake for 50 years where she milked cows everyday.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Red Trail Homemakers Club, to which she belonged for many years. Her main interests were her family and her many grandchildren. She was quick to praise and slow to anger. She enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, her specialty being roast duck, which she had raised herself. She was an avid gardener and the community poet, writing poems for nearly every event. She authored three poem books and wrote many more poems that were never published. She also was the area rug maker, producing more than 5,000 rugs. Her poem books and rugs are in homes across the United States. She also sewed and crocheted for her family, producing many quilts, afghans, tablecloths, bedspreads and doilies. Her greatest job of late was quilting on her fancy new quilt frame. Florence spent thousands of hours researching and documenting her family tree and collected old photographs to put together a geneology book for family members.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clark and Cindy, Mercer, and Joel and Sharon, Bismarck; two daughters and one son-in-law, Susan Kuleck, Bismarck, and Nellie and Steve Blotter, Mandan; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann Marie and Bob Keck, California, and Marion and Martin Braun, Turtle Lake; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Bob, California, and Jim and Joyce, Dunseith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister; and one granddaughter.

Harry Sandau
Harry David Sandau, 56, Mandan, died Dec. 15, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Harry was born Sept. 11, 1940, in Elgin, the son of Leonard and Helen (Friesz) Sandau. They lived on the family farm until 1952 when they moved to Mandan. He married Judith Ann Hulm, Sept. 17, 1960, in Mandan. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was self-employed. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In later days he enjoyed flea markets, poker and pinochle and traveling.

He was a member of Mandan Elks.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; two daughters, Kim Marie Sandau, Banning, Calif., and Francine Marie Pavilionis, Billings, Mont.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Perry David and Lisa (Schlickenmeyer), and Terry Ray and LaVern, all of Mandan, and Jerry Allen and Teri, California; 11 grandchildren, Samantha, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Aspen, Katie, Nicole, Brooke, Alicia, Cole, Darold and Sara; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Virginia, Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Dorothy Fix, Bismarck; and special friends, Shelly Goldstein, Gus Ereth, Mike Wilson and Don Sadler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister and brother; one infant son; one infant grandson; and one brother-in-law, Louie Fix.

Ruben Birst
Ruben Birst, 73, formerly of Bismarck, died Dec. 16, 1996, in a Billings, Mont. nursing home.

Ruben was born April 5, 1923, at Turtle Lake. He graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1941. Ruben married Lois Miller, Nov. 26, 1944. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and then went to work for Texas Oil Co. Inc. and Montana Power Co. before his retirement in June 1973. Ruben had been stricken with a serious stroke about 2 years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; two grandchildren, Lee and Tami Benson; two brothers, Ray, Bismarck, Adam, Turtle Lake; and four sisters, Johana Geck, Woodland, Calif., Eva James, Turtle Lake, Millie Gusba, Montan Home, Ark., and Olive Sigumend, Underwood.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Benson.

Iris Gress
GLENDIVE, Mont. -- Services for Iris L. Gress, 91, Glendive, will be at 9:30 a.m. MST Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glendive, with the Rev. Joseph Ponessa officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. CST Friday, with the Rev. Robert Feeney officiating. Iris died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Glendive nursing home.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach.

She was born Aug. 5, 1905, in Clay County, Iowa, the daughter of LeRoy and Agnes (Mills) Graham. As a young girl she moved with her family to an area north of Mandan. The family later moved into Mandan. She married Ralph W. Gress, Sept. 9, 1925, in Mandan. They lived in Mandan until 1935 when the family moved to Glendive. Ralph died in 1988. She also was preceded in death by two daughters, Charlene Gress and Marvyl Neary.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Judy, Glendive; six grandchildren, Paul Gress, Wahpeton, Mary Freeh, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Todd Gress, Denver, Cathy Gress, Brainerd, Minn., Jan Neary, Long Beach, Calif., and Carolyn Neary, Dallas; and five great-grandchildren.

Wilfred Dorval
BELFIELD -- Wilfred Dorval, 81, Belfield, died Dec. 15, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST today at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Anna Marie McDaniels, Belfield, and Mary Ann Kessel, Dickinson; one son, Louis, Belfield; and one brother, Leo, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Herman Feldmann
DICKINSON -- Herman A. Feldmann, 85, Dickinson, formerly of Beach, died Dec. 15, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. MST Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian; two sons, Darrell and Dale, both of Wibaux, Mont.; two daughters, Marlys Smith, Jamestown, and Leane Zieman, Bemidji, Minn.; two sisters, Elizabeth Brown and Elsie Kunick, both of Glendive, Mont. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Harry DeBoer
POLLOCK, S.D. -- Harry DeBoer, 85, Pollock, died Dec. 15, 1996, in the Mobridge hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church, with burial in Westfield Cemetery.

He is survived by one sister, Pauline Stam, Pollock. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Bessie Wright
ARNEGARD -- Bessie Wright, 87, Arnegard, died Dec. 14, 1996, in the Watford City nursing home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilmington Lutheran Church, Arnegard, with burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, rural Arnegard.

She is survived by one son, P. Glenn, Watford City; and one daughter, Ora Enbom, Wapato, Wash. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City)

Elvine Septon
WILLISTON -- Elvine Septon, 91, Williston, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by three daughters, Betty Winkjer, Williston, Beverly Gilman, Kalispell, Mont., and Carol McKay, Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.; and one brother, Dr. Gilmor Sondreaal, Bellevue, Wash. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston)

Maurice Heger
UNDERWOOD -- Maurice F. Heger, 82, Underwood, died Dec. 16, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church, Underwood, with burial in Heger Cemetery, rural Underwood.

He is survived by his wife, Ione; two sons, Carl, Washburn, and Lawrence, Underwood; four daughters, Alice Erickson and Deborah Siem, both of Underwood, Janet Steckler, Dickinson, and Lucille Gordella, Erie, Colo.; three sisters, Mary Linger and Dorothea Sorenson, both of Yakima, Wash., and Eilleen Parah, Norwalk, Calif.; and one brother, Phillip, Wahpeton. Frances Moran
WILLISTON -- Frances Moran, 82, Williston, died Dec. 15, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Merle Gerdon
ELLENDALE -- Merle L. Gerdon, 88, Ellendale, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Ellendale nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Presbyterian United Methodist Church, Ellendale. Further arrangements are pending at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Donnell Nelson
TURTLE LAKE -- Donnell C. Nelson, 65, Turtle Lake, died Dec. 17, 1996, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.

Nordine Johnson
WILLISTON -- Nordine Johnson, 65, Williston, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Minnie Jones
DICKINSON -- Minnie Jones, 94, Dickinson, died Dec. 17, 1996, in a Dickinson nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Henry Spier Jr.
BEULAH -- Henry D. Spier Jr., 83, Beulah, owner of Spier Sales and Service, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at Zion Lutheran church, Beulah, with the Rev. Reinhold MArkwart officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

DeLores Lang
DeLores Lang, 70, Mandan, died suddenly of an aneurysm, Dec. 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 1-30 p.m. Friday at Bismarck Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Thielenhaus officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

DeLores was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Sheridan County, to John and Louise (Mauch) Haux. She was raised and educated in Goodrich and graduated from high school there. She married Floyd Lang, July 16, 1944, at McClusky. They farmed in the Goodrich area until 1962 when they moved to the Bismarck area. DeLores loved to cook. During the summer months she was a cook at the Crystal Springs Baptist Youth Camp. She currently was a cook at Wachter Middle School. Floyd died July 31, 1988.

She was a member of Bismarck Baptist Church, where she was active in Women's Ministry. She also belonged to the Food Service Workers Association.

DeLores is survived by six daughters and three sons-in-law, Phyllis and Clarence Wetzel, Glen Ullin, Marlys and Dale Oliver, Effingham, S.C., Betty Lang, Fargo, Annette and Bob Schmitz, Bowman, Florence Lang, Mandan, and Pamela Lang, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerald and Luella, and Douglas and Carla, all of Bismarck; two sisters, Gladys Helmer, Seattle, and Ruth Fandrich, Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Raymond, San Pablo, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Meronuck
Evelyn Victoria Johnson Meronuck, 79, Bismarck, formerly of Max, died Dec. 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Max, with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. July Tomlinson will serve as organist, with special music by Marriane and Richard Podruchny. Burial will be in the Max Baptist Cemetery, north of Max.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church, where a family and friend service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Evelyn Johnson was born Aug. 13, 1917, on the family homestead eight miles north of Douglas, the daughter of Carl C. and Olava Johnson. She was raised on the family farm and attended the rural Cleven school system. She worked on the farm until she was 19, moving to Minneapolis where she attended the Lutheran bible Institute and worked as a nanny for the Hogan family for four years. She married Alex Maronuck, June 9, 1940, at Spring Lake Lutheran Church near Douglas. The Rev. Clarence Carlson officiated at the ceremony. They moved to the Meronuck homestead five miles north of Max in Rushville Township, Ward County. They farmed and ranched until retiring in 1978. They continued living on the farm until Alex's death on May 5, 1987. In the fall of 1987 Evelyn moved to Max where she lived nearly two years. Due to ill health she moved to the Baptist Home in Bismarck, and later the Baptist Apartments where she resided until the time of her death.

She was a member of Max Baptist Church and the Baptist Home Chapel, where she played the organ and piano. She was a member of the Baptist Prayer Group, was a mail carrier and did ministry work for many years at the home. She was a member of Sunny Slope Homemakers and Ladies Mission Circle, and served as the WCTU pianist and as a Sunday school teacher for many years. She sang in the choir at Max Baptist Church. She never missed a day of Bible reading and she knew her scriptures, cover to cover. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making lefsa, canning, loved her garden, her chickens and geese, the cattle, pigs, the dogs and cats, and was proud of her Norwegian heritage. She worked hard all her life to make things better for everyone and always tried to please. Her greatest love was for her family; and her grandchildren were her mission in later life. She so enjoyed the family gatherings and her Christmas party every year in Bismarck after the real holiday had passed. Her gentle hand, her kind heart and loving touch will be deeply missed by her family and many, many friends in our community and the Baptist Home community.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alex; and one sister, Mathilda Conboy.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard and Rose, Shoreview, Minn., Donald and Janet, Fargo, David, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Nancy Meronuk, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Richard Krebsbach, Bowman; nine grandchildren, Gina Lee, Jeremy, Andrea, Marisa, Keith and Christopher Meronuck, Nicole McLaughlin, Richard A. and Tony Krebsbach; two great-grandchildren, Dayton and Taylor Krebsbach; four sisters, Lorna Sambor, Margaret Scurlock and Lila Fannik, all of Max, and Phyllis Narum, Douglas; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Gina Lee, Barry Lee, Richard Krebsbach, Kristi Krebsbach, Ross McLaughlin, Nicole McLaughlin, Keith Meronuck, Chris Meronuck, Jane Meronuck, Tony Krebsbach, Jeremy Meronuck, Andrea Meronuck, Marisa Meronuck, Steve Narum, Dennis Fannik, Carsen Sambor, Kent Sambor and Mark Sambor.

Honorary pallbearers will be her friends, neighbors and the Baptist Home staff. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Henry Spier Jr.
BEULAH -- Henry D. Spier Jr., 83, Beulah, owner of Spier Sales and Service, died Dec. 16, 1996, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. MST Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Reinhold Markwart officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bruce Mohl, Charles Gustafson, Ralph Spier, Eldon Spier, Ivan Dschaak and Henry Dukart.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. MST Friday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Henry was born Nov. 30, 1913, south of Zap, a son of Henry Spier Sr. and Rosina (Gunsch) Spier. He was raised and educated south of Zap and worked in California for three years. On Nov. 26, 1936, he married Freda Mohl, north of Zap. They farmed south of Zap for 12 years. In 1948, they went into partnership with John Field in International Harvester and Pontiac. In 1952, Henry bought the Ford Dealership from Fred Flemmer. They were dealers for Ford-Mercury, Minneapolis Moline and Ford Tractor, among others. In 1959 they opened the bowling alley, which they sold to Ervin Mohl in 1974. In 1980 they built their new building, which is now Spier Sales and Service, on Highway 49 North. Henry retired in 1993.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Beulah Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife, Freda; two daughters and one son-in-law, Dell Spier, Bismarck, Diane and Jim Zimmerman, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Murel and Judy Spier, Beulah; seven grandchildren, Rene Fetch, Howie Fetch, Debbie Fetting, Travis Spier, Valerie Spier, Shannon Reichenberg and Shanna Reichenberg; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rose Wiedrich, Lodi, Calif.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ida Weil; and four brothers, Joseph, Fred, Dan and Helmuth.
