Albert Bethke
Albert "Al" E. Bethke, 71, 201 14th Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Jan. 30, 1997, in Mandan. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Hugo L. Blotsky officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Sunday. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.

Albert was born July 23, 1925, in New Salem, the son of Oscar and Margaret (Robinson) Bethke. He was raised and educated south of the New Salem area. On Oct. 28, 1946, he married Frances Stumpf in Mandan. Albert was first employed with Reidinger Motors as an auto body technician. In 1962 he started Bethke Body Shop, where he continued to work as an auto body technician until his death.

He was a member of the Elks, the Eagles, the Moose, KC Third and Fourth Degrees and the American Legion Club.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Albert L. Jr., and Christopher and Jay Marie, all of Mandan; one daughter, Janice, Mandan; two grandchildren, David and Michael Bethke; two brothers, Archie, New Salem, and William, Almont; and two sisters, Esther Rask, Elgin, and Dorothy Rask, rural Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Art and Henry; and one sister, Hazel Guenther.

Albert Meske
Albert Meske, 97, Bismarck, died Feb. 18, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 1-30 p.m. Saturday at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 801 E. Denver Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Tom Eckstein officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today and continue from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation also will be held at the church one hour before services.

Albert was born Sept. 18, 1899, at Nisarata, Russia, the son of August and Jacobina (Schulz) Meske. He came to the United States on May 5, 1903, at the age of three. He grew up and attended school in the Blue Grass area. Albert married Minnie Kind at Halliday, Dec. 12, 1920. They farmed in the Blue Grass area. They moved to Zap in 1926, where he worked for Northern Pacific Railroad and at the coal mines near Zap. He retired from the railroad on Feb. 14, 1964. They moved to Crescent Manor in Bismarck in the fall of 1972. Minnie died in October 1987. He has been a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center since November 1987.

He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Lorraine and Clarence Quast, Beulah, and Viola Navratil, Libby, Mont.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred and Betty, Seattle, Harold and Mardella, Dickinson, Wilmer and Marion, Bismarck, and Elmer and Agnes, Bismarck; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Charlotte Strand
WILTON -- Charlotte Strand, 85, Wilton, died Feb. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunne Lutheran Church, rural Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Regan Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Charlotte Marie was born April 26, 1911, at Canfield, the daughter of Charles and Nora (Michelson) Wilmont. She graduated from Canfield High School in 1930. She attended college in Valley City and began teaching. She was married to Barney Strand, June 23, 1932. They made their home on the original Strand homestead until Barney's death in 1963. Charlotte dedicated her life to education, teaching for 40 years. She also worked as Wilton's newspaper correspondent and eventually began doing local news writing for the Wilton News and the Leader -- News.

She was a devoted member of Sunne Lutheran Church and enjoyed the senior center. She made arrangements for their monthly programs and took care of the senior center scrapbook.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Barney Jr. and Rose, Regan, and Lee and Corky, San Diego, Calif.; one foster son and his wife, John and Jean Hruby, Wilton; one sister, Ruth Johnson, Bismarck; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Charles Mitzel
Charles Mitzel, 81, Milwaukee, Wis., died Feb. 7, 1997, in a Milwaukee hospital. Services were Feb. 12 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Milwaukee.

Charles was born Nov. 12, 1915, the son of Albinus and Rosina (Roehrich) Mitzel. He was raised and educated in the Napoleon area. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp and in the U.S. Army during World War II. Charles was a manager of the J.L. Marcus Corps. of Milwaukee, the position he retired from. In 1950, he was married to Florence Majesky of Milwaukee. She died in April 1978.

He is survived by a very dear friend, Ethel Dolan, and her family, Milwaukee; one brother, Mathias, Napoleon; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Agatha Deibert, and Regina and Steven Doll, all of Bismarck; a sister-in-law, Sue Mitzel, Wyoming; other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law in Milwaukee; nieces and nephews; and other relatives; and many dear longtime friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; one brother, Joe; and one brother-in-law, Joe Deibert; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ida Mitzel.

John Metzger
GLEN ULLIN -- John J. Metzger, 90, Glen Ullin, died Feb. 18, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Hebron, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home.

John was born Feb. 15, 1907, near Glen Ullin, to John and Mary (Will) Metzger. He was raised and educated near Glen Ullin. He worked on the farm, for the Hebron Brick Co. and for the Mott School. John married Emma Roth, March 24, 1932, at Hebron. He worked for the railroad and lived at Billings, Mont., until his retirement in 1967. Emma died Nov. 7, 1976. John later married Fay Weber. They lived in Billings. John returned to North Dakota in the fall of 1985 and entered Marian Manor Nursing Home, Glen Ullin, in August 1992.

He was a member of Vorvators Kinder (Germans from Russia).

He is survived by one daughter, Marian M. Jenkins, Glen Ullin; four grandchildren, Karen Sheeks and Sharon Jenkins, both of Glen Ullin, Roberta Jenkins, Glendive, Mont., and John Jenkins, Bedford, Ind.; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; five sisters; one great-granddaughter; and both of his wives.

Emma Auwinger
HAZEN -- Emma Auwinger, 87, Hazen, died Feb. 19, 1997, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Matt; one daughter, Delma Lauf, Hazen; and one brother, Ralph Kruckenberg, Loveland, Colo. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Jake Ziegler
BEULAH -- Jake Ziegler, 85, Beulah, died Feb. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah, with burial in Beulah Cemetery.

He is survived by one brother, Oscar, Beulah; and six sisters, Hilda Hedger, Loveland, Colo., Lydia Schield and Lenora Pucio, both of Billings, Mont., Minnie Miller and Lorraine Bauman, both of Sidney, Mont., and Esther Borgen, Wolf Point, Mont. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

Ernest Hoff
RICHARDTON -- Ernest Hoff, 69, Richardton, died Feb. 17, 1997, in the Richardton hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST today at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by two brothers, Paul, Richardton, and Ray, Missoula, Mont.; and two sisters, Regina Pfeifer and Eleanor Dinyer, both of Mandan. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Charlotte Zastoupil
NEW ENGLAND -- Charlotte Zastoupil, 98, New England, died Feb. 18, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Zepha Peiler, Anamoose; and one brother, Alan Zempel, Starbuck. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

John Kittler
BEULAH -- John Gottlieb Kittler, 76, Beulah, died Feb. 20, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be at 1-30 p.m. MST Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; two sons, Edwin, Beulah, and Wilmer, Hazen; one sister, Erna Zeiszler, Sidney, Mont. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

Emil Roknes
HALLIDAY -- Emil Roknes, 81, Halliday, died Feb. 19, 1997, in his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Halliday. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Harold Gunn
LEMMON, S.D. -- Harold Gunn, 81, Lemmon, died Feb. 19, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be at 3 p.m. MST Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lemmon, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

He is survived by his wife, Florence; one son, Vincent, Shadehill; two daughters, Lorinda Bossman, Springfield, Va., and Roxann Van Dockel, Las Vegas. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

Agnes Schutt
Agnes Schutt, 87, 420 E. Main Ave., died Feb. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at noon Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

W. Darwin Tallman
CARRINGTON -- W. Darwin Tallman, 89, Carrington, died Feb. 19, 1997, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden, with burial in Wayside Cemetery, Bowdon.

He is survived by one son, Garry, Malott, Wash.; three daughters, Mildred Schmidt, Ashley, Myrna Mesecher, Hazelhurst, Wis., and LaVon Suckut, Richmond, Minn.; and three brothers, Kenneth, Boise, Idaho, Donald, Federal Way, Wash., and Cecil, Monroe, Wash.

Edith Bergquist
Edith Bergquist, 65, Garrison, died Feb. 20, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Owens officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

She was born Oct. 22, 1931, in Bismarck, the daughter of Axel E. and Viola V. (Hitchcock) Bergquist. She was raised and educated in Bismarck. Edith later resided in the Driscoll and Garrison areas. She enjoyed doing crafts and puzzles.

She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Marion, Minneapolis, and Kenneth and Ione, Robbinsdale, Minn.; and seven nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ernest; and one sister, Carol.

The family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Foundation.

Mildred Cuskelly
Mildred Cuskelly, 81, Killdeer, died Feb. 19 at the Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Killdeer. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Alan Lund
Alan J. Lund of 2920 Ontario Lane, Bismarck, died Feb. 18, 1997, in Mesa, Ariz. Alan was 73 years old. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steven Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Alan was born April 18, 1923, at Blanchard, the son of Albert and Pauline (Pederson) Lund.

He graduated from Casselton High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II and was discharged in 1945. Alan married June Olson Aug. 24, 1947. They lived in Underwood, Mott and Bismarck, where he was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 35 years. For the past 10 years he and June have spent winters in Arizona.

Alan, known to his friends as Al or A.J., both loved and hated the game of golf. Like all golfers, Al loved the game when the putts went in and otherwise when they didn't.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Bismarck Elks and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, June, and children, Steve and Chris, San Francisco, Calif., and Tom and Pat, Bismarck; and one sister, Alice Mundt, Casselton. He was preceded in death by his son, Dan.

Wilma Kostelecky
DICKINSON -- Wilma Kostelecky, 68, Dickinson, died Feb. 21, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at Queen of Peace Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Minnie Sivesind
HALLIDAY -- Minnie Sivesind, 88, Halliday, died Feb. 21, 1997, in the Killdeer nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Margaret Wiest
WISHEK -- Margaret Wiest, 93, Wishek, died Feb. 22, 1997, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at United Church of Christ, Wishek. Burial will be in Kassel Cemetery, southwest of Wishek.

She is survived by three daughters, Viola and Ione Bettenhausen, both of Wishek, and Percilla Grenz, Selby, S.D.; one son, Harold, Seneca, S.D.; and one sister, Mary Hochhalter, Hardin, Mont. (Haut Funeral Home, Wishek)

Janiece Widicker
BOWDON -- Janiece M. Widicker, 75, Bowdon, died Feb. 22, 1997, at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bowdon Country Seventh Day Adventist Church, rural Bowdon. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

Myrtle Drager
REEDER -- Myrtle M. Drager, 82, Reeder, died Feb. 21, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Reeder. Burial will be in Mamre Cemetery, south of Reeder.

She is survived by four sons, Kenny and Vernon Nelson, both of Highlanding, Minn., and Donald and Ronald Drager, both of Reeder; and four daughters, Jennie Swenson, Hettinger, Doris Ostby, Lindstrom, Minn., Corrine Downing, Reeder, and Marilyn Drager, Dickinson. She is survived by her husband, Ole, Maddock.
