Alice Essig
Alice Essig, 85, 1453 N. 12th St., Bismarck, died Feb. 1, 1997, at her home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home.

Alice was born March 30, 1911, near McClusky, the daughter of Chris and Ida (Wahl) Riedlinger. As a child she moved to McClusky with her family, and later to Washburn, where she was educated and worked as a telephone switchboard operator. As such, she was also employed in both Mott and McClusky. She married Walter K. Essig in McClusky on June 24, 1931. In 1933 they moved to the Essig family homestead in the Lincoln Valley area. There she was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and was active in Ladies Aid. She was also active in the local Twilight Circle Homemakers Club. In 1974 she retired to Bismarck, where she became a member of Faith Lutheran Church and was active in its Friendship Circle. She was also an active member of Bismarck-Mandan AARP Chapter.

Alice was one of the original founders of the Germans From Russia Heritage Society, and worked for a number of years in its headquarters office. She had a special gift for geneology and was able to help many people with their family research, and also with the translations of German documents, which she enjoyed doing.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Bennett, Concord, Calif., and Margaret Pretzer, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Arlene, Minneapolis, and James and Judy, Fargo; two sisters, Clara Rosenau, Dover, N.H., and Lillian Froehlich, McClusky; one brother, Ted, Everett, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, William.

Donalda Wolf
Donalda "Donnie" Wolf, 62, 1325 N. 20th St., died Feb. 1, 1997, in a Rochester, Minn., hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ben Dove officiating.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Donnie McPhee was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Bismarck, to Donald J. and Hattie ``Ebel" McPhee. She attended school in Bismarck, graduated from Bismarck High School and completed the secretarial course at Bismarck State College. She worked for the military district at Fort Lincoln, First Bank, and as an Avon representative in addition to being a full time wife and mother.

She was a member of Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Bismarck Eagles Auxiliary and had served as president of Lloyd Spetz Post No. 1 Legion Auxiliary.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and special grandchildren. She also enjoyed sporting events, camping and traveling. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends, and all those lives she touched.

She is survived by her husband, Harold; five sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Laurie, Tom and Lois, and Tracy and Jane, all of Bismarck, Terry and Linda, Lansing, Mich., and Todd and Vicki, Milnor; one daughter and son-in-law, Twila and Troy Leingang, Mandan; and 11 grandchildren, Marie, Thomas, Brady, Aubriana, Julie, Shailyn, Emily, Shane, Brekka, Tanner and Nathan, with two more to be born this year. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Adam Hellman, Mandan.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Vicki, and her parents.

John Boelter
John E. H. Boelter, 82, 504 E. Ave. E, died Feb. 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Stephen P. Juergensen officiating. Burial will be in Menoken Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

John was born April 30, 1914, at Driscoll, the son of George and Lena (Ebeling) Boelter. He was raised and educated in the Driscoll area and in Bismarck. He attended Jamestown College and Creighton University in Nebraska. John married Freda Zoeller, Dec. 7, 1937, in Bismarck. During World War II, he worked in Tacoma, Wash., and Los Angeles and then returned to Bismarck. He was a salesman for McCormack-Schilling for 14 years, then worked at North Dakota State Surplus Center, and finally, was Burleigh County Civil Defense Director until his retirement in 1981. He then was a substitute rural mail carrier until 1994.

John was a member of the basketball, football and track teams at both Bismarck High School and St. Mary's High School. He enjoyed gardening and traveling. He was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church and a current member of Bethel Lutheran Church. He was an active member of International Lutheran Layman's League. He had been active in American Red Cross and also had served in the Civil Air Patrol.

He is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Mar-Jo Norbeck, St. Francis, Minn., Carol and Larry Fetch, Rapid City, S.D., and Mary Link, Sheyenne, Wyo.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Joel, Bismarck, and Brian and Polly, Maui, Hawaii; three sisters, Mildred Harms, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, Beverly Harms, Bismarck, and Arlene Klucas, Nisswa, Minn.; two brothers, Edward, Pick City-Mesa, Ariz., and Raymond, Seattle; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years; three brothers; three sisters; and one great-grandson.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Bethel Lutheran Youth Fellowship.

Donalda `Donnie' Wolf

George Zander
George Zander, 95, 201 14th St. N.W., Mandan, died Feb. 3, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Wednesday. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30 and a St. Vincent Verein rosary at 8.

George was born Nov. 24, 1901, in the Crown Butte area of Morton County, the son of Frank D. and Monica (Kautzman) Zander. He was raised and educated in the Crown Butte area. He married Veronica Stein, June 26, 1923, in Crown Butte. They farmed in the Crown Butte area until retirement in 1957 when they moved to Mandan.

George was a member of Eagles, Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent Verein. He was president of the St. Vincent School Board and served on the board of directors of theFarmers Elevator.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Marlene, Mandan, and Larry and Terina, Idaho Falls, Colo.; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Julia and Loran Lamb, Tacoma, Wash., Sally and Floyd Hammargren, Park Rapids, Minn., Catherine Schlosser, Mandan, Marie and Matt Pfliger, Cottonwood, Ariz., and Eleanore and Wesley Schumacher, Great Falls, Mont.; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; seven brothers, Emil and John, both of Mandan, Frank and Steve, both of Yakima, Wash., Joseph, Apache Junction, Ariz., Jack, Bismarck, and Harry, Fargo; and four sisters, Katie Zerr, Tacoma, Mathilda and Elizabeth Leingang, both of Mandan, and Sister Damaris, Olympia, Wash.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Veronica, who died May 19, 1978; four brothers, Lib, Dominick, Anton and Martin; and two sisters, Helen and Rose.

Loren Renken
Loren D. Renken, 62, Mandan, died Feb. 1, 1997, in his home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Philip Patrasek officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Loren was born July 24, 1934, in Freda, the son of Gerhardt and Elsie (Hemmelrick) Renken. He was raised on the family homestead and farmed there for 39 years. He married Rose Mary Stack, Aug. 25, 1962. He operated his own businesses from 1971 to 1983. They lived in several areas of North Dakota, including LaMoure, Jamestown and Steele, before moving back to the Mandan area five years ago.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Annette and Wylie Hilderman, and Wanda and Curtis Kuntz, all of Mandan, and Roberta Renken and her friend, David Moilwa, Bismarck; one son, Paul, and his fiance, Michelle Mathena, Fargo; four grandchildren; one sister, Leona Sumption, Ruthton, Minn.; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Leo and Ruth, Flasher, and Lou Dietz, New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, LeRoy and Lloyd; and one sister, Viola Nelson.

Florian Brown
CENTER -- Florian Brown, 80, Center, died Feb. 3, 1997, in his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. CST Wednesday at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with the Rev. Austin Vetter officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at the church where a prayer vigil and rosary will begin at 7 tonight.

He is survived by his wife, Tillie; three daughters, Corrine Peppard, Fargo, Elaine Benz, Dickinson, and Caroline Thompson, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; and three sisters, Caroline Brown, Tacoma, Wash., Rose Bobb, Center, and Magdalina Landeis, Mandan. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Lillie Sletten
GARRISON -- Lillie Sletten, 72, Garrison, died Feb. 2, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Douglas, Bismarck, and Gregory, Barnesville, Minn.; one daughter, Denielle Lee, Barnesville; one brother, Albert Hummel, Apache Junction, Ariz.; and two sisters, Martha Mummert and Violet Frederick, both of Garrison. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Mercy Anheluk
BELFIELD -- Mercy Anheluk, 78, Fall Creek, Ore., died Feb. 1, 1997, in Oregon. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. MST Friday at St. Demitrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, rural Belfield. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Beata Lutz
MOTT -- Beata Braun Lutz, 92, Mott, died Feb. 1, 1997, in the Mott nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at Church of St. Vincent de Paul, Mott. Further arrangements are pending at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott.

Albert Hruby
Services for Albert Alex Hruby, 67, Mesa, Ariz., were held Jan. 31 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Mesa. He died Jan. 27, 1997, in Mesa.

Mr. Hruby farmed north of Wilton for 16 years. Born in Wilton, he also worked as an insurance agent, and was a Korean War veteran.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandie and Phil Vero, and Cheryl and Rob Kauffman, both of Mesa; one son and daughter-in-law, Stanley and Sandi Hruby, Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Pearl Zerr, Mandan, and Marge Krivoruchka, Belfield; one brother, Don Hruby; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; and two children, Mitchell and Geneva.

Frances Goetz
Frances E. Goetz, 68, Richardton, died Feb. 2, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with the Revs. Brian Wangler and Thomas Wordekemper officiating. Special music will be provided by Mary Hoff, organist, John Gengler, song leader, and Barb Gress, soloist. The reader will be Ron Martin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her nephews, David Bleth, Kevin Pechtl, Kevin Bergenheier, Gary Friedt, Mike Erdle and Ron Goetz.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. today at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson, and will continue from 4-9 p.m. at the church. A rosary will be said at 8 tonight at the church.

Frances E. Bergenheier, daughter of Frank and Helen (Gallagher) Bergenheier, was born Dec. 24, 1928, in rural Richardton. She attended Plum Creek School and Springvale School, south of Richardton. Before her marriage she worked at various jobs, including Winnie's Cafe in Richardton for several years. On Oct. 12, 1953, she married Walter Goetz, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, south of Richardton. They lived on the farm south of Richardton for nine years, then moved into Richardton. Frances was employed at Assumption Abbey for 24 years, and also cleaned St. Mary's Catholic Church for many years. Walter died Jan. 4, 1988.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, treasurer of St. Mary's Altar Guild, an officer for Christian Mothers, Legion Auxiliary, and was a secretary of St. Mary's Church Council. Frances enjoyed bowling, dancing to old time music, and playing pinochle with her friends.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Michael Dura, Bismarck, Marilyn and Raymond T. Hauck, Taylor, and Joann and Ron Martin, Robinson; one son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Roxann, Gillette, Wyo.; 10 grandchildren, Dodi Bohlman, Denae Hauck, Chrisondra and Tyler Goetz, Braden and Shalee Martin, Brent and Shawn Anton, and Robert and Katie Dura; one great-grandson, Ryder Bohlman; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Simon Bleth, Taylor, Agnes and Leo Vogele, Billings, Mont., and Inez and Leonard Friedt, Mott; one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Ann Bergenheier, Dickinson; and her special friends, Erhard Benz and Grace Kuntz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one granddaughter.

Melvin Graner
Melvin J. Graner, 71, a 30-year resident of Pinole, Calif., formerly of the Huff and Mandan areas, died Jan. 14, 1997, in a San Francisco hospital of an apparent heart attack. Services were held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Concord, Calif. Melvin was cremated and his remains will be buried in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Melvin was born May 2, 1925, the son of Paul M. and Katherine (Mann) Graner. He attended Mandan schools and served in the U.S. Marines. Melvin retired after 30 years with the Santa Fe Railroad in Richmond and at the time of his death he was working for the East Bay Dental Ars in Richmond as a courier.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Millie, Glendale, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents; his brother, Bernie and Roger; and his sisters, Loretta, Agnes and Frances preceded him in death.

Otto Gensburg
NAPOLEON -- Otto Gensburg, 72, Napoleon, died Feb. 2, 1997, in the Napoleon nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with burial in Napoleon Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Lydia; two sons, Ronald, Bismarck, and Michael, Lincoln; three daughters, Carol Mullins, McKenzie, Mary Engelhardt, Sterling, and Cindy Doll, Napoleon; three brothers, David, Napoleon, and Herbert and George, both of Bismarck; and three sisters, Erna Leno and Violet Holzworth, both of Bismarck, and Francis Joslin, Jamestown. Ada Wagemann
ASHLEY -- Ada Irene Wagemann, 70, Ashley, died Feb. 2, 1997, in Aberdeen, S.D. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Salem Reformed Church, Ashley. Further arrangements are pending at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley.

Thomas Franck
Thomas A. Franck, 92, Panorama City, Wash., formerly of Mandan, died Jan. 31, 1997, in a Panorama City nursing home. Services will be held at 9 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both of Olympia.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; four daughters, Betty Jones, Diane Moore, and Leona Brown, all of Olympia, and Della Gilliland, San Diego, Calif.; one son, Eugene, Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Rose and Mary Schmidt, both of Mandan; and two brothers, Joe, Sidney, Mont., and Frank, Yucca Valley, Calif. John Goetz
BEULAH -- John C. Goetz, 93, Beulah, died Feb. 3, 1997, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Louisa; and one son, Clifford, Zap. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

Leona Miller
HANNAH -- Leona A. Miller, 71, Hannah, died Feb. 2, 1997, in the Langdon hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Langdon, with burial in Hannah Cemetery.

She is survived by four sisters, Betty Wilson, Benton, Ark., Marilyn Helt, Hannah, Melva Zingleman, Watford City, and Earlene Miller, Rolla; and one brother, Delwyn Miller, Hannah. (Brooks Funeral Home, Langdon)

Hulda Bacon
Hulda Pearl Bacon, 82, Wibaux, died Feb. 3, 1997, in Glendive. Services will be held at 3 p.m. MST Friday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church, Wibaux. Further arrangements are pending at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Wibaux.

Bert Helmenstein
CENTER -- Bert Helmenstein, 71, Center, died Feb. 4, 1997, at his home. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Rose Domagala
BOWMAN -- Rose M. Domagala, 81, Bowman, died Feb. 1, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Bowman, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Lawrence, Bowman, Gene, Baker, Mont., and Leland, Scranton; two daughters, Evelene Frobarp, Delta, Colo., and Betty Sazinski, Cliffton, Colo.; and five sisters, Margaret Holgard, Lemmon, S.D., Hanna Rasmus, Brownsville, Texas, Eva Rosin, Sacramento, Calif., Anne Zent, Eugene, Ore., and Betty Willey, Haynes, Kan.
