Herbert Aipperspach
BEULAH -- Herbert Aipperspach, 78, Beulah, died July 1, 1996, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley.

Family visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Public visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Herbert was born Sept. 12, 1917, south of Golden Valley, to Jacob and Lydia (Froeschle) Aipperspach. He attended Walker District Country School, where he graduated from eighth grade. He farmed and ranched with his father and broke horses for neighbors in his late teens and early twenties. On Oct. 21, 1952, he married Mabel Queiser in Richmond, Va. After his father passed away, Herb took over the farm and ranch and continued farming and ranching until he and Mabel retired and moved to Beulah in 1989.

Herb kept himself busy with leathercrafts, jewelry making and animal watching. Later in life, he could be seen taking daily walks near his home in Beulah. Herb was a life-long member of Golgotha Lutheran Church in Golden Valley, where he was baptized and confirmed.

Herb was a kind-hearted man who always had a story. He was deeply loved by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mabel; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leo and Kim and James and Patricia; three daughters and one son-in-law, Joyce, Audrey and Vicki and Dave; his grandchildren, Amy and Jenny, Michelle, Jamie, Stephanie and Ruby Jean; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry and Mildred, Minot, and Leroy and Betty, Beulah; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy and Louise, both of Tacoma, Wash., and Lydia and Tobias, Killdeer; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Grace Clooten
Grace Woodworth Clooten, 87, Alhambra, Calif., formerly of Bismarck, died July 2, 1996, in Alhambra. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Glenn Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Stewartsdale.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Grace was born July 6, 1908, in the Apple Creek area of Burleigh County, the daughter of Stewart and Myrta Wallace Woodworth. She was raised in Burleigh County. She married Joseph Clooten and moved to California in 1941. Mr. Clooten preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Lola, South Pasadena, Calif., and William and Kwang, Norwalk, Calif.; one sister, Jane Robinson, Bismarck; and two brothers, Walter and William, both of Bismarck; two grandchildren, David, San Pedro, Calif., and Karen Grenier, Boise, Idaho; and two great-grandsons, Branden and Brett.

Bertha Kist
LINTON -- Bertha C. Kist, 87, Grand Forks, formerly of Linton, died July 2, 1996, at her home in Grand Forks. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Linton, with the Revs. Alan Steier and Arthur Fischer officiating. Burial will be in Linton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Bertha was born March 7, 1908, on a farm near Temvik, the daughter of Phillip and Christina (Heyne) Pfeifer. She attended rural McCulley School and worked for the Petrie Family before her marriage to Edward Kist, Nov. 10, 1940, at First Baptist Church, Linton. They farmed near Hazelton for three years, before moving to a farm near Temvik. They lived there for 48 years. Edward died May 24, 1993. She lived at Pembina and Albuquerque, N.M. before moving to Grand Forks in June 1994.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Linton, and their Women's Missionary Society. She attended Grace Baptist Church at Grand Forks.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Edward D. and Marla, Albuquerque; one daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Robert Fischer, Pembina; four grandchildren, Jason E. and Evan D. Kist, both of Albuquerque, David R. Fischer, Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Lisa M. Stevens, Rapid City, S.D.; two sisters, Tillie Shipley, Steele, and Emma Weber, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brother and one sister.

Marvin Karch
NEW SALEM -- Marvin Karch, 75, New Salem, died July 2, 1996, at his farm. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Garry Crites officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Marvin was born May 10, 1921, in Grant County south of Glen Ullin, the son of Edward and Bertha (Roth) Karch. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Elgin High School and Dickinson State College. He married Bernita Skalsky, Sept. 16, 1944, in Wibaux, Mont. After the wedding, he taught school for five years. He rented a farm south of Glen Ullin until 1956 when he purchased a farm five miles southwest of New Salem.

He was active in the Presbyterian Church and was an elder for many years and a clerk of session. In 1993 he joined Peace Church. He served on the New Salem School Board for six years and was active in and enjoyed all school sporting events. He was presented with the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Fan of the Year. He is survived by his wife, Bernita; three sons, Melvin, Valley City, and Terry and Tim, both of New Salem; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Fred, Hebron and Harold, Bismarck; and three sisters, Violet Staiger, Hebron, Marjorie Schmautz, Vancouver, Wash., and Donna Fritz, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Hilde Krein
MINOT -- Hilde J. Krein, 68, Minot, died July 4, 1996, at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

She is survived by five sons, Kenny, Underwood, Iowa, Ron, Mandan, Don, Van Buren, Ark., Steve, Minot, and Johnny, Peoria, Ariz.

Thelma Helland
Thelma I. Helland, 85, Binford, died July 3, 1996, in the Cooperstown hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Binford, with burial in Binford Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Rudy; three sons, Arden, Pasadena, Md., David, Rockford, Ill., and Lowell, Binford; one daughter, Karen Nordvall, Bismarck; one sister, Esther Olson, Verndale, Minn.; and one brother, Oliver Bakken, Binford. (Quam-Plaisted Funeral Home, Cooperstown)

August Scheerer
CARSON -- August Scheerer, 84, Carson, died July 3, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday at Emmaus Congregational United Church of Christ, Carson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Freda, one son, the Rev. Richard Scheerer, Mason City, Iowa; and one daughter, Carol Doran, Bend, Ore. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

Sondra Kovarik
ELGIN -- Sondra P. Kovarik, 22, of Fargo, died July 2, 1996, as a result of an automobile accident near Livingston, Mont. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MDT Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband Michael, son Tyler, her parents, Quentin and Rosemary Pfutzenreuter of Elgin; and her grandmother, Ruth Liedberg, Goodridge, Minn. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

Everette Baker
PARSHALL -- Everette Baker, 76, Parshall, died July 3, 1996, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ, Parshall, with burial in Parshall Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma; three sons, Ron, Redwood City, Calif., Brad, Stanley, and Rod, Garrison; seven daughters, Judy Hallingstad and Dianna Baker, both of Redwood City, and Roberta Ranum, Vicky Johnson, Sheila Steele, Janet Baker and Susan Dixon, all of Parshall; and three sisters, Norma Johnson and Adelaide Waller, Parshall, and Phyllis Bosley, Kalispel, Mont. Michelle Scheeler
DICKINSON -- Michele Scheeler, 37, Dickinson, died July 3, 1996, in Dickinson. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne; one son, Casey, at home; her parents, Eddie and Angie Kostelecky, Dickinson; four brothers, Gene Kostelecky, Rossville, Md., Cary Kostelecky, Jacksonville, Fla., Ed Kostelecky, Winnemucca, Nev., and Todd Kostelecky, Gilette, Wyo.; and two sisters, Gayleen Wanner, Dickinson, and Corrine Weige, Dickinson. Willmer Held
Willmer F. Held, 81, New Salem, died July 3, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Garry Crites officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. tonoon Saturday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Willmer was born Feb. 17, 1915, in New Salem, the son of George and Ida (Hoffmann) Held. He attended rural school south of New Salem and graduated from the eighth grade. In his early years, he worked as a farm hand. In 1940 he rented a farm south of New Salem and started farming. On Dec. 30, 1940, he married Olive Timpe, the daughter of Walter and Olga (Olson) Timpe. They farmed for six years. In the spring of 1946, he took a job managing the Occident Elevator in New Salem. He managed the Peavey Occident Elevator for 31 years, retiring in 1977 to pursue his lifelong enjoyment of fishing. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren on his many fishing trips. He was a member of Peace Church and served on the church board for six years. He was a member of New Salem Fire Department and a lifetime member of the North Dakota Firemen's Association, He erved on the New Salem City Council for nine years and was on the Elm Crest Manor board of directors.

He is survived by his wife, Olive; one son and daughter-in-law, Dorlyn and Beverly ``Brave Living", Beaver Bay, Minn.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Donald Sorge, Washburn, and Kathy and Alen Sundeen, Chaska, Minn.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Elda Thiel, and Ruth and Eugene Kaelberer, all of New Salem; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Chester and Randy, Mandan, and Doris Held, New Salem

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Harold.

Louise Schacher
Louise Schacher, 93, Bismarck Baptist Home, died July 4, 1996, in the home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Baptist Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Clyde Leimberer. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Baptist Cemetery in Washburn.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Services and one hour before services at the home.

Louise was born April 17, 1903, in Odessa, Russia, the daughter of Gottlieb ``George" and Katherine (Vollmer) Pfiefle. She emigrated to the United States with her family in 1906, settling in Washburn, where she was raised and educated.

She married Andrew Schacher on March 22, 1922, at the German Baptist Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Emil Huber presiding. Andrew died Jan. 15, 1956. Louise worked at the Washburn hotel as a cook for many years. She moved to the Bismarck Baptist Home in September 1991. She was a member of the Washburn Baptist Church and the Ladies' Aid Society.

Louise loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren and also enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Hilda Overton of Baker, Ore.; Irene and Ephriam ``Shorty" Helm of Lewiston, Idaho. Two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Norma of Mandan, and Dave and Judie of Bismarck; three sisters, Alvina Mehrer and Lydia Fritz both of Bismarck, and Helen Atkinson of Miles City, Mont.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband Andrew; two daughters, Ruth Schacher and Leona Petersen; four sons Arthur, Richard, Walter and Ernest; one grandchild, Daniel; two great-grandchildren, Scott Petersen and Toby Flinn; both parents; two sisters Pauline Lee and Carrie Walters; and one brother, Ted Pfiefle.

Carroll Hendrickson
BOWMAN -- Carroll E. Hendrickson, 90, Bowman, died July 2, 1996, in the Bowman hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at Bowman United Methodist Church, Bowman. Further arrangements are pending at Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Elizabeth Heier
Elizabeth Heier, 87, 815 S. 16th St., Bismarck, died July 5, 1996, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Church of St. Mary's, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m., followed by a vigil.

Elizabeth Zahn was born Oct. 24, 1908, in Hague, N.D., the daughter of Joseph and Magdaline (Schmidt) Zahn. She attended rural school. Elizabeth married Joseph Heier Oct. 21, 1929, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hague. They farmed southwest of Hague until 1948 when they moved to Bismarck. She worked at F.W. Woolworth, baking cakes and pastries. She also did some private house cleaning.

She was a Girl Scout leader, and a member of Royal Neighbors, Church of St. Mary's, St. Mary's Altar Society, and St. Francis Mission Group. She also baked and decorated wedding cakes and made wedding flowers.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Alvin and Rose Heier, Bismarck; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Dalphina and Edwin Mittelstedt, Bismarck, Charlotte and Sebastian Benfiet, Portland, Ore., Alvina Voegele, Seattle, Jane and Curt Anderson, Bismarck, Carol and Leonard Pfau, Portland, and Suzie and Jack Mieras, Davenport, Fla.; two brothers, Steve Zahn, Bismarck, and Walter Zahn, Alexandria, Minn.; six sisters, Marie Kolberg, Bismarck, Clara Zahn, St. Louis Park, Minn., Frances Langevin, Minneapolis, Barbara Welder, Mobridge, S.D., Tillie Selbernagel, Calgary, Canada, and Ann Zahn, St. Louis Park; one sister-in-law, Sister Dalphina Heier, St. Cloud, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; four brothers; three sisters; and two grandchildren.

John Meyer
STEELE -- John E. Meyer, 90, a longtime Steele resident, died July 5, 1996, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with the Rev. Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

John Meyer was born March 24, 1906, at Turtle Lake, the son of Gustav and Pauline (Witt) Mayer. He attended rural school through the eighth grade. As a young man, he left for California for several years, returning to North Dakota, where he settled in Steele. John lived in Steele until the time of his death. He married Hulda Brown Sept. 3, 1952, in Montana. John worked construction for the North Dakota Highway Department. In his later years he did carpentry work. John and his little red pickup will be remembered around the area for attending many sales, which was a hobby of his.

He is survived by one sister, Lydia Just, Garrison; many nieces and nephews; two step-daughters, Violet Dewald, Steele, and Leora Dickson, Kintyre; seven step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hulda; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Eugene Miller
Eugene F. Miller, 55, 624 N. 21st St., Bismarck, died July 5, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Lisa Ahlness officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Eugene F. ``Gene" Miller was born Feb. 18, 1941, in Tappen, the son of Abe and Lena (Geist) Miller. He moved to Bismarck with his family in the mid-1940s. Gene was raised and educated in Bismarck, where he attended and graduated from Bismarck High School. He also attended Bismarck Junior College for a short period of time.

Gene married Sharon Josephson March 27, 1966, in Bismarck. He worked for the North Dakota Highway Department for several years. He was currently self-employed at Gene's Place, located in the Federal Building. Gene enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching the Minnesota Twins on television.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Dave Hess, Minot Air Force Base; one son, Dan Miller, Devils Lake; two grandchildren, Emily and Benjamin Hess, Minot Air Force Base; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Arlen Simons, Baldwin, and Phyllis and Bob Duffy, and Judy and Cliff Lakoduk, all of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Joan Miller, Dalton, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Lena Miller.

Walter Hjelle
Walter R. Hjelle, 77, 921 N. Washington St., Bismarck, died July 4, 1996, at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Bishop Robert Lynne and the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Family visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Public visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Walter was born Aug. 8, 1918, at Roundup, Mont., the son of Ben and Cora (Simrl) Hjelle. He attended grade school and high school in Mercer, and graduated from Valley City State College. He also received special training at Santa Fe, N.M., and Boyne Falls, Mich. Walter married Norma Berg Oct. 12, 1967, in Bismarck.

Prior to World War II, Walter was a member of the Immigration Border Patrol at El Paso, Texas. He was inducted into the Army in 1945 and was assigned to the Intelligence Corps as a criminal investigator and later assigned to duty with the United Nations Assembly. Upon his discharge, Walter owned and operated a hardware store in Garrison. He served in the North Dakota State Legislature from 1959 to 1961 and again from 1983 to 1985. In December 1960, Walter was appointed State Highway Commissioner and served in that position until December 1981, longer than any other commissioner in the state's history. In 1985 he was again appointed State Highway Commissioner and served until 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Larry and Jean, Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter, Barbara Hjelle-Placek, Bismarck; one step-daughter, Sharon Berg, Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Mary Ann, Minneapolis; and one sister, Margaret Ann Dorn, Hendricks, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Bruce, San Diego.

The family prefers memorials to Medcenter One, Bismarck-Mandan Hospice.

Sondra Kovarik
ELGIN -- Sondra P. Kovarik, 22, Fargo, formerly of Elgin, died July 2, 1996, as a result of an automobile accident near Livingston, Mont. Services were July 6, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, with the Revs. Bill Bradley and John Amundson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Special music was provided by Annette Roth, organist, and Bonita Roth, vocalist. Casketbearers were Cheri Worcester Muggli, Paige Wegner, Colleen Veitz, Lacy Roth, Randena Ruff, Sara Olson, DeeAnn Evanson and Alba Friesz with the Elgin High School Class of 1992, and all friends were considered honorary bearers.

Sondra Pfutzenreuter Kovarik was born May 5, 1974, in Fargo, the daughter of Quentin and Rosemary (Liedberg) Pfutzenreuter. They lived at Hawley, Minn., and in the fall of 1975 moved to Elgin, where she grew to young womanhood. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1992 and participated in junior high basketball and track, FHA, Pep Club, concert and pep bands, annual staff, choir, drama and golf. She was an energetic and outgoing girl, helping her parents in their business, and liked knowing everyone in her community. Sondra was on the Elgin swim team from kindergarten through high school and loved to bowl. She was an accomplished baker, enjoyed doing counter cross stitch, working with flowering plants, camping and fishing with her family, and spending time on her cousin's farm.

She attended North Dakota State University for one year and married Michael J. Kovarik March 17, 1994, in Fargo. They continued to live in Fargo and she completed her education at Interstate Business College. Sondra was employed by PRACS, a pharmaceutical research company. She strived for perfection in all she did.

Sondra was devoted to her husband and son, and they enjoyed bicycling together. At her death, she and Michael were vacationing and enjoying a delayed honeymoon by camping, rafting and touring Glacier Park and the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, area. They were returning home so she could be an attendant at one of her best friend's wedding. She will be remembered by all as a devoted daughter, wife, mother and friend. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Elgin.

Holding her memory most near are her husband, Michael and son, Tyler, Fargo; her parents, Rosemary and Quentin Pfutzenreuter, Elgin; maternal grandmother, Ruth Liedberg, Goodridge, Minn.; her mother and father-in-law, Pat and Ken Kovarik, Grafton; her godchild, Olivia Comstock; her godparents, Sylvia and Vernon Friesz; as well as many other relatives and friends.
