Mary Ellsworth
Mary Elizabeth Senzek Ellsworth, 75, Crossville, Tenn., died Jan. 11, 1997, in a Crossville hospital. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church, Chattanooga, with burial in the U.S. National Cemetery.

Mary was born in Langdon and had lived in Chattanooga, Tenn., for 22 years before moving to Crossville two years ago. She had lived in Bismarck from 1946-72. Mrs. Ellsworth retired from North American Royalty's with 25 years of service.

She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and St. Alphonse Catholic Church, Crossville. She was a member of the Exchange Club of Chattanooga and Crossville and the 55+ Club with St. Jude Catholic Church. She was the wife of the late Herbert F. Senzek.

She is survived by her husband, Dickinson; two daughters, Diane Mary Senzek Fahlsing, Abingdon, Md., and Linda Smith, Bismarck; one son, Dale Alan Senzek, Seattle; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Victor Bender
MARTIN -- Victor Bender, 79, Martin, died Jan. 10, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Baptist Church, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot.

He is survived by two sons, Gerald, Martin, and Dean, Emmet, Idaho; one brother, Walter, St. Paul, Minn.; and two sisters, Marie Sherlock, Carrington, and Emogene Pilger, St. Paul. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Sharon Johnson
WILLISTON -- Sharon Johnson, 50, West Fargo, formerly of Williston, died Jan. 7, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Hillside Memory Gardens, Williston.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin; one daughter, Kristina, West Fargo; her parents, Obert and Vernice Johnson, Williston; one brother, Arnold Johnson, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Joni Olson, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Phyllis Wigen Clausen
Phyllis Wigen Clausen, 76, Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of Bismarck, died Jan. 8, 1997.

Phyllis was born in Hutchinson, Minn., Jan. 20, 1920, to Mendus R. and Emma (Rustad) Vevle. She graduated from Owatonna High School, Owatonna, Minn., in 1938 and received a degree in psychology and sociology from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. in 1942. While attending St. Olaf College, she sang in the well-renowned St. Olaf Choir under the direction of F. Melius Christianson. Phyllis received the Distinguished Alumni Award from St. Olaf College in 1975.

On July 4, 1943, she married J.O. "Bud" Wigen of Hettinger. They lived in Fargo and Dickinson before moving to Bismarck in 1951. For 25 years, Phyllis worked for the North Dakota Department of Human Services. In those years she worked in Crippled Children Services before moving into the division of Children and Family Services. At the time of her retirement she was director of the Division of Children and Family Services. While working in the Department, Phyllis was very instrumental in developing legislation, testifying and lobbying on adoption services. She wrote manual material and handbook information for implementation of "Subsidized Adoption in North Dakota" and she developed the concept and implemented the "Handbook on Foster Care for Children." She also wrote several articles about adoption, which have been printed in professional publications. She was called upon as a public speaker on the subjects of adoption and education. One of Phyllis's ideas and programs was the North Dakota Children's Trust Fund, which today is one of the most progressive programs in the area of protection and rights of children in North Dakota. As stated at her retirement dinner, "She pointed up the need for subsidized adoptions and as a result, children who may never have had a chance to be adopted, now can be."

Phyllis also was very involved in the development of the lives of the children in Bismarck for many years. She was a member of the Bismarck School Board for 12 years and served as the first female president. While living in Bismarck she was very active in other activities, which included being an officer for elementary and junior high school Parent-Teachers Associations, a volunteer Boy and Girl Scout leader and co-chairwoman of the residential Community Chest drive. She was very involved in Trinity Lutheran Church, serving on the Board of Parish Education, teaching Sunday school and being the only female member of the building committee during the planning and construction of the new church structure. While living in Bismarck, Phyllis was a charter member of PEO Sisterhood Chapter AJ, and a member of Zonta International, Delta Kappa Gamma, Shrine Auxiliary and North Dakota Conference of Social Welfare. She was very active in local, state and national boards, committees and organizations.

In 1985, Phyllis and Bud moved to Sun City West. Mr. Wigen died in 1987. Phyllis was a very active member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West. She served as president of the new ELCA women's organization, committee member of the staff committee, vice-president of the church council and was a member of the church choir. Phyllis was a member of PEO Chapter CX of Sun City West.

On March 17, 1990, Phyllis married Marvin "Stretch" Clausen of Prescott, Ariz. They divided their time between Sun City West and Prescott until her illness.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin "Stretch" Clausen; one son, Richard Wigen, San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan Wigen and Robert Kallberg, and Ann and Jack Chase, all of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Karla Vevle, Mountain Brook, Ala.; three granddaughters, Jessie, Rosa and Patti; and special friends, Fritz Lichty and Mariana Chuquin.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 13724 W. Meeker Boulevard, Sun City West.

Memorials may be sent to Lord of Life Lutheran Church Endowment Fund or the North Dakota Children's Trust Fund.

Francis Monzelowsky
Francis C. Monzelowsky, 64, 101 Sixth St. N.E., Mandan, died Jan. 13, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Francis Monzelowsky was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Solen, the son of John and Anna (Shorttick) Monzelowsky. He went to live with his brother, Vincent, in Mandan in 1944. He completed his education in Mandan and joined the National Guard.

On July 13, 1953, he married Irene Wetsch in St. Anthony. Francis worked at Amoco Oil Refinery for 22 years. He retired from the refinery to devote time to his entrepreneurial interest starting Dakota Steel in 1969, Dakota Caulking in 1970, Dakota Inc. in 1981, Dakota Four Seasons Department Store in 1986 and Mandan Sheet Metal in 1991. He was one of the founding members of Metric Construction. He was an owner of Bis-Mdn Builders Exchange.

Francis served on the Mandan Hospital Board, he was a trustee and Eucharistic minister at St. Joseph's Church. He belonged to the American Legion and Eagles. Francis was deeply interested in the economic development in Mandan and contributed to numerous businesses.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; two daughters and one son-in-law, Bev and Pat Monroe, Baldwin, and MaryKay Monzelowsky, Devils Lake; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Jacki, and Dale and Julie, all of Mandan; 12 grandchildren, Courtney and Alexis Monroe, Scott, Stacey and Allison Hoff, Gavin, Garrett and Morgan Monzelowsky and Cory, Eric, Lauren and Colin Monzelowsky; and one brother, Erasmus, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Curtis; one sister, Antonia ``Toni" Brose; and four brothers, Paul, John, Vince and Frank.

Clarence Schwartzbauer
Clarence Schwartzbauer, 58, 215 10th Ave. S.E., Mandan, died Jan. 12, 1997, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Spirit of Life Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Clarence was born July 12, 1938, in Bismarck. He was the son of Joseph and Theresa (Smith) Schwartzbauer. As a young boy he worked on a farm for his uncle Frank Berger. Clarence married Janice Magilke, May 28, 1976, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. He drove truck all his adult life, the last 30 years for Berger Brothers Trucking.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; two sons, Tory, Mandan, and Kirby, Fargo; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Don, Leonard and Linda, and Joe and Marlene, all of Mandan; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Helen Lampe, Salisbury, Mo., and Lorraine and Wally Schwab, and Marie and Herb Hill, all of Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and Leo; and one infant sister.

Leo Kirschenmann
STREETER -- Leo K. Kirschenmann, 57, Streeter, died Jan. 11, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Assembly of God Church, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona; three sons, Kevin, Glendive, Mont., Kolin, Decatur, Ill., and Korey, Fargo; his parents, Adam and Verna Kirschenmann, Jamestown; and one brother, LeRoy, Ellendale. (Haut Funearl Home, Jamestown)

Margaret Wald
Margaret Wald, 99, Bismarck, died Jan. 10, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Monday at the church, where a vigil and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Monday. Visitation will resume at the church one hour before services.

Margaret was born Dec. 13, 1987, in Russia, the daughter of Markus and Elizabeth (Scherr) Schmidt. She was the oldest of 10 children. The family came to the United States from Russia when Margaret was nine months old. She grew up in Logan County and attended school for about a year and a half. Margaret was united in marriage to Conrad Wald, July 2, 1917. They farmed 21 miles southwest of Napoleon for 38 years. In the fall of 1958 they moved to Bismarck. Their residence was 411 12th Street for 28 years.

Margaret and Conrad attended St. Mary's Catholic Church and she was a member of the Altar Society. In 1986 they moved into Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Conrad died shortly after. Margaret lived there for 10 years. She loved to sew and kept herself busy making items for her family, friends and the Care Center. She continued to sew until a week before her death.

She is survived by four sons and five daughters-in-law, Conrad and Alvina, McKenzie, Sylvester and Millicent, Bismarck, Adam and Lillian, Bismarck, and Francis and Irene, Reynolds, and Elizabeth Wald, Bismarck; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Phyllis Wald, Adrian, Mich., Julia and Alex Feist, Bismarck, Christina and Henry Dosch, Bismarck, Dorothy Wald, Bismarck, Helen and James Schmidt, Hazelton, Margaret and Arlan Vonesh, Buxton, and John Ell, Bismarck; 78 grandchildren; 183 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Joseph and Markus; infant triplet sons; one daughter, Elizabeth Ell; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Lenus Ternes
Lenus Ternes, 73, Bismarck, formerly of Mandan, died Jan. 11, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, with military rites by Mandan American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight.

Lenus was born March 29, 1923, at Shields, the son of Anselm and Deonella (Braun) Ternes. He was raised and educated in the area and served in the U.S. Navy from July 21, 1944 until July 29, 1946. He married Edna Metcalf, May 9, 1949, in Akron, Ohio. He owned and operated Ternes and Sons Construction. Edna died April 7, 1969. He married Marie Albertson, Sept. 12, 1986. After his retirement, his hobbies were reconstructing wooden windmills and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; seven sons and four daughters-in-law, Victor, Dallas, Texas, Jeffrey and Patricia, Bismarck, Anselm and Marilyn, Mandan, Brian and Julie, Bismarck, Kevin, Fargo, Brendan and Carol, Mandan, and Arthur and Kay, Bismarck; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Carol and Duane Martin, Kalispell, Mont., Marilyn and Cletus Fuchs, Paynesville, Minn., Jeanette and Ron Parham, Rancho Mirage, Calif., Deanna and LaVern Miller, Bismarck, and Anita Ternes, Phoenix; one stepdaughter, Leah Albertson; 23 grandchildren; seven brothers, Bill, Ray, Al, Bert, Larry, Baldwin and Balzer; and four sisters, Linda Gustin, Alvina Buck, Anisia Gustin and Minnie Keller.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna; one son, Christopher; one brother, Ambrose; and one sister, Claudina Ternes.

Sidney Bonderud
CARRINGTON -- Sidney Bonderud, 84, Carrington, died Jan. 11, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, with burial in Carrington Cemetery.

He is survived by one daughter, Annette Laude, Fargo; two sons, Dennis, Grand Forks, and Jim, Beulah; four brothers, Wes, Pick City, Orville, San Francisco, Calif., Earl, Shelby, Mont., and Kenneth, Apple Valley, Calif.; and three sisters, Blanche Linde, Minneapolis, Edna Green, San Francisco, Calif., and Dorothy Gellert, Pasadena, Calif.

JAMESTOWN -- Irma Baker, 93, Jamestown, died Jan. 12, 1997, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
