NAPOLEON -- Chester E. Nelson, 85, Napoleon, died Jan. 17, 1997, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon. Further arrangements are pending at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

Lorraine Feigum
NAPOLEON -- E. Lorraine Feigum, 83, Napoleon, died Jan. 17, 1997, in the Napoleon nursing home. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with burial in Napoleon Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Norvel, and one sister, Violet Rozelle, Vancouver, Wash. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

James Azar
James Azar, 72, 721 N. Third St., died Jan. 17, 1997, in his home of natural causes. Arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

James Schock
MICHIGAN -- James K. Schock, 42, Michigan, died Jan. 15, 1997, in the Grand Forks hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Michigan School.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; three sons, Lewis, Valley City, and Lucas and Travis, both of Michigan; his mother, Olga Schock, Ashley; one brother, Dwight Schock, Albuquerque, N.M.; and four sisters, Karen Aman, Jamestown, Dorothy Dockter, Wahpeton, Dawn Schock, Albuquerque, and Della Schock, Bismarck. Edna Sorteberg
HARVEY -- Edna Sorteberg, 85, Harvey, died Jan. 15, 1997, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Bethany Lutheran Church, Harvey, with burial in Bowdon Lutheran Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Hirschkorn, Goodrich, and Jackie Provo, Sedona, Ariz.; four sons, Roger Sorteberg, Santa Maria, Calif., Barry Sorteberg, Bakersfield, Calif., Oliver, Glyndon, Minn., and Curt, Indianola, Iowa; three sisters, Inez Weed, Fargo, Adeline Konschak, Goodrich, and Charlotte Coonahan, Moorhead, Minn.; and two brothers, Forrest Hanson, Dunseith, and Harland, Fargo. James Stover
BUCYRUS -- James R. Stover, 60, Bucyrus, died Jan. 17, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 9 a.m. MST Wednesday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending.

Dennis Whelan
ELLENDALE -- Dennis A. Whelan, 78, Ellendale, died Jan. 16, 1997. Services will be at noon Sunday at St. Helena's Catholic Church, Ellendale, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; one daughter, Ann Whelan, Rochester, Minn.; two brothers, Merle, Madison, Wis., and Darwin, Dickinson; and four sisters, Hazel Theede, Ellendale, Luella Bobzien, Ellendale, Virginia Thorpe, Riverside, Calif., and Delia Schweitz, Sanoma, Calif. (Hoven Funeral Home, Ellendale)

Emma Monroe
Emma Monroe, 93, Kensington, died Jan. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Emma was born Aug. 29, 1903, in New Salem, the daughter of James and Frederika (Schwinkendorf) Jiras. The family moved to Baldwin when she was a small child. Emma attended rural schools, and graduated from Bismarck High School. She attended Bismarck Business College and Dickinson State Teachers College. She taught school in the Baldwin and Wilton areas for nine years. She married Philip Monroe at Christmas time in 1925. They farmed near Wilton for more than 50 years and then moved to Bismarck after leaving the farm. They spent many winters in California. She was a member of Stihl Homemakers Club for many years and was its first president. She was also a member of National Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by two sons, Roderick, Winterset, Iowa, and Darrel, Paso Robles, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lillie Young, Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip, on July 1, 1983; three brothers; and one sister.

Arthur Sather
Arthur Sather, 82, Bismarck, died Jan. 17, 1997. Services will be held at noon Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary and prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

William Bailey
William Bailey, 72, Tacoma, Wash., formerly of Shields, died Jan. 12, 1997, in a Tacoma hospital. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

William was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Shields, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Sarea (Mahren) Bailey. He was raised in Shields. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp for 17 years and fought in the Korean War from 1952-1953 and on Bunker Hill. Bill received awards like the Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Victor Medal World War II, Korean Service Medal and United Nations Service Medal, among others.

He is survived by one sister, Kathreen Bailey Claymore, Calif.; three sons, William Jr., Maine, Dan, Enumclaw, Wash., and Randy, South Prairie, Wash.; one daughter, Kathleen, Maine; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Agnes Veeder
WATFORD CITY -- Services for Agnes Bergliott Rolfsrud Veeder, 88, Watford City, will be at 10 a.m. today at Assembly of God Church, Watford City, with the Rev. Terry Detwiler officiating. Burial will be in Johnson Corners Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church one hour before services.

Agnes was born Sept. 8, 1908, to Nils and Rebecca (Heide) Rolfsrud at her parents' home near Keene in McKenzie County. She attended Keene Consolidated School through eighth grade and later graduated from Watford City High School in 1928. In the summer of 1928, Agnes attended the summer session at Minot State Teachers College where she earned her teaching certificate. That fall, Agnes taught at Pleasant Valley School and the following year at Oak Springs School. On May 29, 1930, Agnes married Sidney Veeder of Johnson Corners in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Rena Rolfsrud marrying Sidney's brother, Benjamin H. Veeder Jr. The wedding took place at the Rolfsrud home near Keene. After their marriage, the couple lived south of Johnson Corners on Sidney's farm near Croff. Times were hard and after the loss of this farm to the bank, Agnes and Sidney moved to Watford City where they operated a milk business until Sidney purchased another farm east of Johnson Corners in 1942. Sidney died in 1971. Agnes died Jan. 15, 1997, in Watford City.

Agnes entered many flower shows and won countless ribbons and awards for her unique flower arrangements. Always known by family and friends as having a green thumb, she often was sought out for her advice on raising plants. In the early 1960s Agnes began to pursue another interest, ceramics. Agnes was a keen observer and was involved in various crafts throughout her life. In the late 1960s Agnes accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was an avid Bible reader, a member of the Living Faith Fellowship, and later a member of the Assembly of God Church.

She is survived by three sons, LeRoy, Watford City, Larry, Red Wing, Minn., and David, Billings, Mont.; her daughter, Rosalie Veeder, Bottineau; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Halvor Rolfsrud in 1976, and Erling Rolfsrud in 1994; and one sister, Rena Veeder in 1984. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City)

Harvey Malard
Harvey Malard, 58, rural Bismarck, died of complications from pemphigus-vulgaris, Jan. 16, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bismarck Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Thielenhaus and the Rev. Bill Keple officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Harvey was born Sept. 22, 1938, in Bismarck. He was the youngest of nine children born to Bill and Margaret (Hassa) Malard. He attended Apple Creek School through eighth grade and Bismarck High School. He also attended the agricultural program at North Dakota State University. Harvey married Maysil Williams, Jan. 1, 1965, in Bismarck. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher and recently worked for Jobbers Moving and Storage.

Harvey was active in Rural Youth, 4-H and FFA while growing up. He served on the Apple Creek Township Board for several years, and was also a leader of the Apple Creek 4-H Club.

He is survived by his wife, Maysil; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Doug Rausch, San Antonio, and Wendy and John Wellmann, Red Wing, Minn.; one son, Lowell, Dickinson; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Wellmann, Red Wing; five sisters and one brother-in-law, Helen Braun, Vivian Dorman, Marian Felchle, all of Bismarck, Fern Brown, Baldwin, and Agnes and Ken Krueger, Pick City; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Edwin and Valda, and John, all of Hazelton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Arlene Heath.

Carl Mueller
Carl Mueller, 78, Bismarck, died Jan. 16, 1997, in Bismarck. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Evangel Temple, Bismarck, with the Revs. Buddy Yantz, Lloyd Jorgenson and Ernest Moen officiating. Burial will be in Glen Ullin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Evangel Temple, and will continue one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Carl was born April 1, 1918, in Chicago, to Karl and Frances (Renner) Mueller. He was raised in Chicago and attended Lane Technical High School where he was a star on the track team and known as "Flash" Mueller. Carl married Gertrude Peltz, Oct. 17, 1943, in Bluegrass. They lived in Chicago where they were active members of Belmont Gospel Church. Carl served on the church board, as treasurer and Sunday school teacher. He worked in Chicago as a tool and die maker for 32 years. In 1970 they moved to Bismarck where Carl was involved with building and managing Kirkwood Apartments. They were members of Evangel Temple and served as greeters. Since his retirement he remained involved with his sons in real estate, an Emu ranch and other investments. Carl was a compassionate, gentle man, with a good sense of humor and a deep love for God, family and friends. Even during his last days here, he would take Gertrude's hand and hold it close and say "I love you." He told his family with tears in his eyes that "He'll miss the fun, the joy and the relationships."

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Glen and Cornelia, Elmhurst, Ill., and Dale, Bismarck; three grandchildren and their spouses, Kimberly and Tony DeLeo, Nick and Shelly Taranu, and Tia Taranu and her fiance, Mark, all of Illinois; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Ervin and Josie Peltz, Silas and Martha Liechty, Hilda Peltz and Grace Henson; many nieces and nephews; and cousins in Austira.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

John Stanton
John Francis Stanton, 88, Napoleon, died Jan. 17, 1997, in the Napoleon nursing home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Dakota Memorial Chapel, where a parish vigil will be said a 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

John Francis was born June 18, 1908, in Braddock, the son of John and Emily (Keenan) Stanton. He was raised and educated in Braddock, but he also attended school in Pierre, S.D. He later moved to Bismarck. On May 3, 1937, he married Catherine McLean. They lived in Bismarck for the next 55 years until he entered Napoleon Care Center in 1992. His passion was that of a salesman, working for Gamble's Store, owning and operated the Furniture Mart, and working for Anderson Ace Hardware, and retiring from Montana-Dakota Utilities in 1970.

Francis was a caring husband and father, always putting his family first. He enjoyed and accepted all people, remembering names after that first introduction. He was well-read and was quite the talker. He was a jack-of-all-trades, always working on some project in his spare time, singing as he worked. He will be remembered for being a fair, kind and honest man.

He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Kay, Chico, Calif., and Peggy and Ron Ressler, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Shawn Halloran, Stockton, Calif., Colleen Herzfeldt and her husband, Steve, Lodi, Calif., Michelle Schafer and her husband, Mike, Lincoln, Tom and Mary-Bridget Ressler, Bismarck; four great-grandchildren, Matthew and Gregory Herzfeldt, and Daniel and Catherine Schafer; one brother, Victor, Bismarck; and one sister, Agnes Gassmann, Valley City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and his wife, Catherine.

James 'Jim' Azar
James "Jim" Azar, 74, 721 N. Third St., Bismarck, died Jan. 17, 1997, at his home of natural causes. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. George's Episcopal Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Bruce Caldwell officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

James Azar was born May 7, 1922, in Bismarck, the son of Joseph and Zackie (Saliba) Azar. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1940 and attended Bismarck Junior College. He worked for the U.S. War Department prior to service in the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet in 1942. He married Betty Chesak in Bismarck.

James was very involved in private enterprises. In 1952 he built and operated the NoDak Motel. He owned and operated several antique stores in Bismarck and Mandan. He was well known for his expertise and knowledge of antiques and enjoyed dealing in antiques until his death. He recently returned from visiting his daughters in Hawaii.

He is survived by two daughters, Jana and April Azar, Maui, Hawaii; one grandson, Zayne, Lake Tahoe, Calif.; one sister, Helen Youness, Bismarck; one brother-in-law, John Rodgers, Minneapolis; three nieces, Janet Pinks, Bismarck, Beverly and Norm Ciavarella, Mandan, and Betty Rodgers Casties, Paris, France; and two nephews, Robert and Brenda Youness, Lenexa, Kan., and David Rodgers, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Wilbur; and two sisters, Hazel Rodgers and Angeline Azar.

The family prefers memorials to St. George's Episcopal Church (the elevator fund.)

Jim was loved and will be greatly missed by his family, relatives, friends and all whose lives he touched.

Arthur Sather
Arthur H. Sather, 82, 1011 S. Third St., Bismarck, died Jan. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at noon Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary and prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Arthur was born in rural Becker County, Minn., and raised and educated at Lake Park, Minn. He married Ann Turchin from Casselton in Colorado Springs, Colo., and they made their home in Portland, Ore. In his spare time he studied and graduated from Tractor Training Service in Portland. That service found him a job with a tractor dealership in Tule Lake, Calif. To be closer to family, they moved to Fargo and Arthur went to work for Haggast Construction Co. out of Bismarck for 11 years. He then spent 20 years with Sweeney Brothers Tractor Co. until retirement in 1979.

He was a 30-year member of the Moose Lodge, where he was an officer for a number of years and also as a member of the Degree Team. Art also was a longtime member of U.C.T.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathryne Sather, and Mary and Robb Boyd, all of Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carroll and Carol, Gary and Janice, and Alan and Charlotte, all of Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Brian and wife Denise, Carly, Colby, Ruby Jo, Katherine and Amanda Sather, and Ian and Nicholas Boyd; two great-grandchildren, Dean and Jennifer Sather; and two sisters, Marie Schneider, Salem, Ore., and Ruby Bernstein, Durbin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Harold, Pete and Ruben; and one sister, Margaret Borden.
