Rose Frohlich
Rose Frohlich, 84, Glendive, Mont., formerly of Mandan, died Jan. 28, 1997. Arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Harold Wahl
TUTTLE -- Harold E. Wahl, 83, Tuttle, died Dec. 31, 1996, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Tuttle, with the Rev. Robert Annon officiating. Spring burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Harold Wahl was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Goodrich, N.D., the son of Jacob and Caroline (Binder) Wahl. He married Lois Kramer March 6, 1937. They were married 59 years. Harold spent all of his life farming in Tuttle. He was very active in numerous community activities and attended Tuttle Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vonda Lee and Arnold Glaser, Mandan, and Arlet and Dallas Leno, Wing; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Judy Wahl, Tuttle; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leoma Brenden, Tuttle.

Dennis Olson
Dennis Marshall Olson, 41, died accidentally Dec. 13, 1996. He was known for his kindness, loyalty and devotion to his family and friends.

A native of Bismarck, past resident of Woodland, Calif., and longtime resident of San Leandro, Calif., Dennis is survived by his bride of two months, Darcy; his parents, Albert and Corrinne Olson; his sisters, Sue Sponsel and Gayle Morris; and his brothers, Bob, Tom and Jeff Olson. He leaves brothers-in-law, George Sponsel, Ralph Morris and Scott Lowe; sisters-in-law, Cindy and Tracy Olson; and parents-in-law, Gary and Barbara Lowe. He is missed by his nieces, Sara and Alison Morris, and Shannon, Melissa, Elise and Dana Olson; nephews, Ryan and Brent Sponsel, Adam Morris, Scott Olson and Jason Lowe; and god-daughter, Dana Stocking. All are residents of the greater San Francisco Bay area.

Dennis leaves several aunts and uncles in North Dakota including, Leonard and Rosemary Ciavarella, Mandan, and Malvin and Virginia Olson Jr. and George and Alice Olson, all of Bismarck. He leaves an uncle, Charles Needham, Union City, Calif.; and an aunt, Lois Needham, Denver. Dennis' godfather, Donald Orpen, is from St. Paul, Minn.

Dennis is preceded in death by his grandparents, Malvin and Margaret Olson Sr., Bismarck, and Edward and Gertrude Needham, Mandan.

Dennis was a graduate of Pacific High and Chabot College. He was a telecommunications technician with PG&E for 10 years, a member of the Mule Deer Foundation, the Farrier Association and life member of the NRA. He also was a certified custom saddlemaker and professional farrier (horseshoer).

Services have been held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Boys Scouts of America; The Wild Horse Sanctuary, P.O. Box 30, Shingletown, Calif. 96088; The U.S. Shooting Team, P.O. Box 15159, Colorado Springs, Colo. 80935; The Mule Deer Foundation, c/o Rob Fletcher, 1878 Catalina Ct., Livermore, Calif. 94550; or a local charity of your choice.

Lawrence Rolland
Lawrence C. Rolland, 87, Enderlin, died Dec. 30, 1996, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Burial will be in Enderlin Cemetery.

He is survived by two sons, Lawrence and Lowell, both of Enderlin; and seven daughters, Bonnie Rowe and Cheryl Thompson, both of Enderlin, Joann Ricks, Spokane, Wash., Shirley Fox, Bismarck, Beverly Gibson, Leonard, Patricia Nordhagen, Lisbon, and Karen Fritsvold, Renton, Wash. Hattie Tuhy
DICKINSON -- Hattie Tuhy, 78, Dickinson, died Dec. 30, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson.

She is survived by one son, Dave, Dickinson; two daughters, Irene Engle, Kalispell, Mont., and Angie Colacuori, Angola, Ind.; four brothers, Charlie Kubas, Killdeer, John Kubas, Yakima, Wash., and Tom and Emil Kubas, both of Spokane, Wash.; and five sisters, Victoria Zeller, Martha Rounsville, Mary Wanner and Irene Kohler, all of Dickinson, and Angie Swenson, Newport, Wash. John Wald
KINTYRE -- John T. Wald, 65, Kintyre, died Dec. 31, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, rural Linton. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by four brothers, Joe, Bismarck, and Pete, Ferdinand and Ben, all of Kintyre; and two sisters, Maryanna Wald, Strasburg, and Walburga Schlosser, Kintyre. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

William Kiemele
MINOT -- William Kiemele, 71, Minot, died Dec. 27, 1996, in Mesa, Ariz. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church, Minot. Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys, Minot; two daughters, Vicki Stevens and Judy Epps, both of Minot; three sisters, Anne Rocholl, Long Prairie, Minn., Carolyn Weishair, Plymouth, Minn., and Violet Walther, Bismarck; and four brothers, Albert, Linton, Raymond, Bismarck, Erwin, Ashley, and Lt. Beulah Sundby
WILLISTON -- Beulah Sundby, 81, Williston, died Dec. 30, 1996, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, Williston; one son, Alton, Williston; and three daughters, Donna Folven, Saugus, Calif., Betty Ouse, Deer Park, Wash., and Cindy Iverson, Dallas. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Robert Vennes
WILLISTON -- Robert J. Vennes, 75, Williston, died Dec. 30, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by his wife, Una Mary; three daughters, Mary Vennes and Angie Resell, both of Williston, and Una Borud, Minot; two sons, William, Sauk Rapids, Minn., and Jerry, Williston; and four brothers, Albert, Duane and Frank, all of Williston, and John, Grand Forks. Bonnie Hieb
HARVEY -- Bonnie M. Hieb, 60, Harvey, died Dec. 30, 1996, at her home of natural causes. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Harvey. Spring burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery, Anamoose.

She is survived by one son, Tim, Fort Worth, Texas; and one daughter, Debbie Hill-Leavy, Custer, Wash. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Lois Bjerke
Lois Bjerke, 62, Churchs Ferry, died Jan. 1, 1997, at her home. Arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

Dorothea Maddock
Dorothea Maddock, 78, Maddock, died Jan. 1, 1997, at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. William's Catholic Church, Maddock. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Keith Price
GARRISON -- Keith Price, 62, Garrison, died Jan. 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Margaret Philips
DICKINSON -- Margaret Philips, 76, Dickinson, died Dec. 31, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Katherine Oster
Katherine Darlene Bleibaum Oster, 78, 1204 N. First St., died Jan. 29, 1997, in her home after a courageous 10-month battle with cancer. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bismarck Baptist Church, with the Rev. John F. Thielenhaus officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Katherine Darlene Wagner was born Nov. 29, 1918, in Kintyre, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Weiste) Wagner. She attended school in Oakes. Darlene was united in marriage to Frank Bleibaum, Jan. 5, 1937. They lived in Japan for several years before returning to North Dakota with the U.S. Army in 1951 to reside at Fort Lincoln. Frank died Dec. 5, 1984. Darlene continued to reside in Bismarck, and on Jan. 22, 1988, she married Edwin T. Oster. They were happily married for nine years and seven days.

Darlene worked as a seamstress for many years at Opgrand's and Barkers. She was a member of Eagles Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Burleigh County Senior Center and Bismarck Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin; one daughter and son-in-law, Bette and Bob Hetland, Devils Lake; one sister, Barbara Brier, Los Angeles; and three grandchildren. She is also survived by Edwin's children, Ed Oster Jr., Barbara Angew, Edna Johnson, Harold Oster and Diana Wiens, all of Washington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sisters; and three brothers.

The family prefers memorials to Medcenter One Hospice.

Ruth Shaw
Ruth E. Shaw, 79, Seattle, died Dec. 24, 1996, in a Seattle hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Inurnment will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Ruth was born April 13, 1917, in Mandan, the daughter of LaRue and Alice (Nichols) Shaw. She grew up on the family farm near Mandan and attended rural elementary school and Mandan High School. She worked for 35 years as a supervisor in the Boeing Security Division in Seattle. She retired in 1979.

She was a very active member of the University Presbyterian Church. Ruth was a member of PEO Chapter AO in Seattle, and originally had been a member of PEO Chapter H in Mandan. For the past few years, she had been a resident of the Hearthstone Retirement Home in Seattle.

She is survived by three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Shirley, Lewis and Elsie, Bevan and Phyllis, and Don and Honey, all of Mandan; one brother-in-law, Bill Henry, Renton, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Bob; one sister, Grace; and an infant sister, Sylvia Ann.

The family prefers memorials to First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, or to the PEO Scholarship Awards. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Jacob Vavra
STANTON -- Jacob F. "Jake" Vavra, 85, Stanton, died Jan. 28, 1997, in the Glen Ullin nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Center United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Phil Lint officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Jacob was born Dec. 11, 1911, on his father's homestead in Oliver County, the son of Joseph and Katie (Beba) Vavra. He was raised and educated in Oliver County and also lived in Alabama, Texas and Canada while growing up, returning to North Dakota in 1930. He married Alice Benjamin, April 1, 1930, at Hannover. They moved to Everett, Wash., and returned to a farm near Hannover in 1940. He lived and worked on his farm six miles north and two miles east of Hannover until he became a resident of Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin, Dec. 23, 1996. Alice died Oct. 29, 1987.

Jake served as president of Pleasant Valley School Board, was on the board of the ASCS for many years, as well as the Oliver County Farmers Union and rural fire department boards. While work and the farm were of primary importance to Jake, he also enjoyed gardening, visiting and playing cards, as well as reading.

He is survived by one son, Harold, Stanton; one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Jim Riedemann, Hazen; one granddaughter and her husband, Kari and Jim Mohl, Hazen; and one great-granddaughter, Kelsey Ann Mohl; one sister, Helen Willis, Houston, Texas; and two brothers, Louis, Houston, and George, Sweeney, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice; one sister, Lydia Vavra; four brothers, Frank, Joe, Ed and Charlie. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Rose Frohlich
Rose Frohlich, 84, formerly of 700 18th St. N.W., Mandan, died Jan. 28, 1997, in Glendive, Mont. Services will be held at noon Saturday at Christ the King Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.--9 p.m. Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.

Rose Markel was born Dec. 31, 1912, in Russia. She came to America with her parents, Joseph and Katherine (Lang) Markel, and settled in the Crown Butte area. She attended country school in Crown Butte. Rose married John Frohlich, Jan. 22, 1935, at St. Vincent's Parish, Crown Butte. They farmed in Crown Butte until 1966 when they moved to Mandan. John died Aug. 11, 1971. Rose resided in Mandan until 1994 when she moved to Glendive to live with her daugther, Rosaline.

She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, John A. and Dot, Philip, Clifford and Paula, and Herb and Darlene, all of Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Rosaline and Leo Doll, Glendive; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Louis Markel, Yakima, Wash.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; three brothers, Peter, Joseph and John; and two sisters, Anne and Elizabeth.

Rose was active in gardening, reading poetry, playing cards and was an avid reader of books. She was a great cook, spending many hours cooking for visiting priests in her home. She and her husband developed a close relationship to the Rev. Stanley Sticka.

Martin Ames
DEVILS LAKE -- Martin A. Ames, 89, Devils Lake, formerly of Clyde, died Jan. 27, 1997, in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, with the Rev. Roger Leonhardt officiating. Burial will be in Devils Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m.-noon Friday at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Martin Arthur Ames was born April 29, 1907, in Huron Township in Cavalier County, rural Munich. He was the son of Christian and Mary (Jenrich) Ames. He was raised and educated in Munich and Westfield, Wis. he returned with his family to the Munich area where he farmed. He married Elsie M. Westphal, Feb. 14, 1929, at Egeland, and they farmed near Clyde until they retired. In 1976 they moved to Devils Lake. Elsie Ames died April 8, 1995. He loved to travel and visited over 40 states, parts of Canada, Europe and Mexico.

He served as Huron Township clerk for 39 years and also served on the Alsen Lutheran Church board, Farmers Union Cavalier County Board, elevator board and Huron Township School Board.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Evelyn, Munich; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Karyl Kinnischtzke, Glen Ullin; five grandchildren, Corey, Casey and Marty Ames, and Lyle and Lynn Kinnischtzke; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie; one daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Ames; one brother, Ernest; and five sisters, Louisa, Edna, Anna, Marie and Rillia.

Arline Dilger
Arline M. Dilger, 59, 3725 Montreal St., died Jan. 27, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home, where a vigil will begin at 7 tonight.

Arline was born July 24, 1937, at Mercer, the daughter of Gottlieb and Matilda (Schafer) Fischer. She was raised and educated in Bismarck, and graduated from Bismarck High School. Arline married Anton Dilger, Sept. 8, 1956, in Bismarck. In 1964, they moved to Seattle, where Arline attended University of Washington, and graduated in 1970, with a bachelor of arts degree in accounting. She then worked at several accounting firms in the Seattle area. They retired and returned to North Dakota in 1991. Arline enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, Anton; one sister, Norma Rydberg, Chewelah, Wash.; one brother, Delbert Fischer, Everett, Wash.; nieces, Constance Keller, Bismarck, Patricia Hicks, Washington, and Rosemary Gruber, Connecticut; nephews, Kurt and Mark Dilger, both of Bismarck, Ralph Consolini, Connecticut, John Consolini, Washington, Patrick O'Hagen, David O'Hagen and Scott Hicks, all of Washington; and 13 grandnephews and grandnieces.

Robert Lawrence
DICKINSON -- Robert B. Lawrence, 78, Dickinson, died Jan. 29, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Dickinson, with burial in Dickinson Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Fern; two sons, David, Gladstone, and Bob, Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Carlotta Ehlis, Dickinson, and Roberta Stroh, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Helen Forsythe, Dickinson. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)
