Gabriel Nassif
Gabriel Mitchell Nassif, 63, 518 N. Seventh, died July 13, 1996, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Boelter Funeral Home, 200 W. Turnpike Ave., with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and will continue after 9 a.m. Thursday.

Gabriel was born July 31, 1932, in Bismarck, the son of Thomas Shaker Nassif and Lillian Lu Lu Saliba. Gabriel graduated from Bismarck High School where he was a four-year varsity football player and helped champion numerous victories. He attended North Dakota State University on a football scholarship, and a private business college in Fargo, where he gained expertise as an IBM keypunch operator.

In the late 1950s, Gabriel and his wife, Rita Abu Gebran, ran a small "mom and pop" grocery establishment called the Bismarck Grocery Store which was located at 310 S. 10th St. After that, he helped his father manage NP Valley Hotel, formerly located at 206 E. Main St. in Mandan. He also managed his father's surplus store, worked as a keypunch operator and grounds maintenance manager at North Dakota State Highway Department. One of Gabriel's greatest prides was his role in placing the North Dakota cement sign welcoming people to the State Capitol. Most recently he ran a small carpet business.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lillian Lu Lu Nassif; his brother, Mitchell; his sister, Vivian; and his parents.

Gabriel is survived by his wife, Rita Abu Gebran; his sons, Clyde Nassif and LeRoy Nassif, both of Houston; his daughters, Nancy Nassif Sabot, Bismarck, Clarice Nassif, Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Tanya Sabot, Joshua Sabot and Mathew Sabot, all of Bismarck; his sisters, Hazel Nassif, Fargo, Josephine Judt, Bismarck, Esther Nassif, Sioux City, Iowa, Virginia Nassif, Los Angeles; and one brother, Doug Nassif, Los Angeles. Also Gabriel's mother-in-law, Mrs. Elias Abu Gebran; brothers-in-law, Frank Gebran, Emil Gebran, and Atef Gebran, all of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and many nieces and nephews.

Ragna Halverson
REGENT -- Ragna Halverson, 84, Regent, died July 15, 1996, in a Sioux Falls, S.D. hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at American Legion Hall, Regent, with burial in Regent Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Paul, Algona, Iowa, and Dorrance, Evanston, Ill.; one daughter, Frances Noteboom, Sioux Falls; one sister, Myrtle Strand, Hettinger; and two brothers, Oscar Lien, Hettinger, and Harold Lien, New England. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)

Carol Trautmann
GOODRICH -- Carol Trautmann, 57, Goodrich, died July 16, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Further arrangements are pending are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Bessie Messler
WILLISTON -- Bessie Messler, 102, Williston, died July 16, 1996, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Frances Siders
GRAND FORKS -- Frances Siders, 69, Grand Forks, formerly of McClusky, died July 16, 1996, at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Aamundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks. Arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Meta Mosser
BEACH -- Meta Claire Hartmann Mosser, 91, Beach, died July 15, 1996, in Glendive, Mont. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at United Community Church, Beach, with the Rev. Stephen Holmes officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Medora Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Meta was born Sept. 30, 1904, at Sleepy Eye, Minn. She lived with her family on a very productive farm and attended school there until 1919, when the family moved to Grand Forks. In 1919 Meta entered Grand Forks Central High School and graduated in the spring of 1923 with a teaching certificate.

In the fall of 1923, Meta came by train to Medora to teach a country school north of Medora. Her first night at Medora was spent at the Roughrider Hotel. The next day she was to leave with the mailman to go to her school. She stood in the doorway of the hotel all dressed up in a velvet hat and suede shoes. She expected the mailman to come in a car, but instead he came driving a team of horses and a wagon. They crossed the Little Missouri 23 times in high water.

Meta taught many Ukrainian children whose parents were new immigrants to America and some could not speak English so she had to teach them English before she could teach them anything else. She rode a horse to school from her place of boarding, arrived at school and built a fire of wood and coal, taught the children and cleaned the school for $50 or less a month.

In the fall of 1925, Meta married Ralph Mosser at Wibaux, Mont. They began ranching on Beaver Creek, later buying a ranch on the Little Missouri River. They lived north of Medora and east of Trotters all their married life except the later years when they lived at Beach.

Meta enjoyed reading, bridge, her family and friends. She was an excellent family bookkeeper, one of the first women to learn to drive a Model T, driving 45 miles over very poor roads to go to the nearest town, taking along relatives or neighbors.

Meta was a super efficient, capable mom to her family. She was a member of United Community Church in Beach.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and John Hollstein, Wibaux; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Marjorie Mosser, Beach; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, on Dec. 26, 1995; three brothers; and three sisters.

The family prefers memorials to the Beach chapter of Dollars for Scholars or United Community Church of Beach.

Joyce Busch
MOTT -- Services for Joyce E. Busch, 64, Mott, will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mott, with the Rev. Robert Pestal officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott. Joyce died July 14, 1996, in an Omaha, Neb. hospital, having been in failing health the past year.

Closed casket visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. tonoon Thursday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott.

Joyce E. Busch was born July 12, 1932, at Rugby, to Clarence and Ella (Rohrer) Tofte. She grew up and received her education at Rugby where she was married to Wayne E. Busch, Feb. 10, 1952. They lived in Rugby and Minot where he finished his education and moved to Mott in 1961. They have resided there since.

Joyce devoted her life to raising her family and participation in Trinity Lutheran Church, and its ladies organizations. She taught Sunday school and took particular joy in being with her children and grandchildren as they participated in sports and music.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Wayne E. Busch; three daughters, Sharon Lemke, Wichita, Kan., Sandra Kern, Bellevue, Neb., and Charlene Herauf, Faribault, Minn.; her mother, Ella Welch, Rugby; six grandchildren; and her half-brother, Les Welch Jr., Roseau, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her father; one brother, Raymond Tofte; and one granddaughter, Beth Ann Lemke.

A memorial has been established.

Joyce Boyle
Joyce (Thorp) Jenkins Boyle, 56, Riverton, Wyo., died of a heart attack July 3, 1996, in Casper, Wyo. Joyce was cremated and her immediate family had a private memorial as she had requested.

Joyce was born May 4, 1940, in Windom, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Anna (Dahl) Thorp. She was raised and educated in the Bismarck-Mandan area. After graduation she married and lived in Montana and Wyoming until her death.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, James and Theresa Jenkins, Riverton, Ronald and Sharon Jenkins, and David and Tracy Jenkins, all of Douglas, Wyo.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Violet and Miner Zearley, and Lila and Harold Parkin, all of Mandan, and Berneice and Mel Doerr, Bismarck; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur and Irene Thorp, Driscoll, and Vernon and Patti Thorp, Aurora, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Henry Thorp; her brother, Kenneth Thorp; her sister, Pearl Olson; her mother, Anna Thorp; one grandson, Jacob Jenkins; and her husband, Hugh Boyle.

Frances Siders
MCCLUSKY -- Frances M. Siders, 69, Grand Forks, died July 16, 1996, at her home. She was a former resident of McClusky and Bismarck, and of Dilworth, Minn. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Amundson Funeral Home, Grand Forks. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McClusky Cemetery.

Visitation will begin one hour before services at the funeral home.

Frances was born Sept. 14, 1926, in McClusky, the daughter of John and Atilda ``Tillie" Bauer. She grew up and attended school in McClusky, and graduated from McClusky High School in 1944. She then trained as a registered nurse at Trinity Hospital in Minot, receiving her diploma in 1947. She married Charles Siders, April 27, 1948, in Miles City, Mont. She worked as an operating room nurse at St. John's Hospital in Fargo for 14 years. She was a member of American Operating Room Nurses. They spent several years in Bismarck during their retirement, where she was a member of United Methodist Church. Most recently she was active in community work at Parkwood Place in Grand Forks.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; three sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cynthia, Grand Forks, Lowell and Pauline, Nicholasville, Ky., and Paul and Vicky, Duluth, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Laverne and Glenn Swendson, McClusky.

Carol Trautmann
GOODRICH -- Carol Trautmann, 57, Goodrich, died July 16, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich, with burial in Goodrich Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. She was born Feb. 8, 1939, in Harvey, to Carl and Flora Thompson. She grew up in the Hurdsfield area and attended country school there. She married Roger Trautmann, July 3, 1969, at Carrington. They lived in Goodrich, where she was a homemaker. She was once married to Gerhardt Wiest.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and American Legion Auxiliary, both of Goodrich.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; one son, Gregory Wiest, Velva; one daughter, Terri Wiest, Hurdsfield; her stepson, James Trautmann, Faribault, Minn.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Gary Thompson, Odessa, Texas; and one half-brother, Marvin Harrington, Minot.

Monica Wandler
DICKINSON -- Monica Wandler, 80, Dickinson, died July 16, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Pius Cemetery, Schefield.

She is survived by four sons, Kenneth, Kent, Wash., Ronald, Rochester, Minn., Donald, North Platte, Neb., and Bruce, Auburn, Wash.; four brothers, Paul Wanner, Seb Wanner and Linus Wanner, all of Dickinson, and Louis Wanner, Bowman. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Eunice Riedlinger
Eunice A. Riedlinger, 80, 726 Aster Lane, died July 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Anna Stute
MERCER -- Anna Stute, 97, Mercer, died July 16, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Mercer Recreation Center, with burial in Mercer Cemetery.

She is survived by one brother, Walter Stute, Mercer. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Donald McKay
Services for Donald Henry McKay, 73, Seattle, Wash., formerly of Pollock, S.D., will be held at 11 a.m. July 27 at Pollock Lutheran Church. Services will also be held at the V.A. Retirement Home in Port Orchard, Wash.

Helen Helmenstein

Bessie Messler
WILLISTON -- Bessie Messler, 102, Williston, died July 15, 1996, in the Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Hillside Memory Gardens, Williston.

She is survived by one daughter, Clara Ferrell, Williston; three sons, Earl King, Colorado Springs, Colo., Fletcher King, Hollandale, Minn., and Charles King, Albert Lea, Minn. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

LouWana Lang
ASHLEY -- LouWana Lucille Lang, 69, Ashley, died July 15, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday at Kulm Seventh-day Adventist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald; two daughters, Sally Bertsch, Ashley, and Dr. Melanie Lang, Gainsville, Fla.; her mother, Vera Johnson, Bemidji, Minn.; one brother, Wayne Johnson, College Place, Wash.; and two sisters, Beverly Lamon, Andover, Minn., and Patricia Burghart, College Place. Maurice Thompson
Maurice A. Thompson, 63, 705 Boundary Road, Mandan, died July 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.

Maurice was born July 30, 1932, in Devils Lake, the son of Emery and Bertha (Fulkerson) Thompson. He was raised and educated in Devils Lake, graduating from Devils Lake Central High School, and attended Lake Region State College for two years. After high school he served in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne Division from Jan. 16, 1953, to Jan. 14, 1955. He taught and coached for two years at Oberon and Hannaford. He was employed at the North Dakota National Guard. He married Rose Massine in Balta, June 3, 1957. He was employed at North Dakota Job Service from 1957 to 1992, when he retired. He lived in Jamestown from 1957 to 1968 when he moved to Mandan. He graduated from University of Mary with a bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1978.

He was a member of American Legion, Elks Clown Unit, I.A.P.E.S., Mandan Sewing Club, A.A.U. Track and Field and M.A.R. Club. He served as a Grand Knight in Knights of Columbus, Jamestown, a Boy Scout leader and treasurer of Job Service Credit Union and Mandan Elks. He was active in Mandan High School swimming and diving program, Mandan Elks, and was diocesan development director in Jamestown and a finance committee member of the Fargo Diocese.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons, Patrick and his special friend, Teresa Carlson, Eldorado, Kan., and Paul, Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Brett Flaherty, Queensbury, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Michael Thompson, and Nicole and Kaitli Flaherty; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Kathy, Jacksonville, Ark., John and Marilyn Elmhurst, Ill., and Myron and Celia, San Antonio; and one sister, Margaret Olson and her friend, C.L. Burton, Fountain Valley, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Patricia.

Edward Toman
Edward C. Toman, 81, Mandan, died July 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital as a result of heart problems. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Glenn Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Edward C. Toman was born May 22, 1915, in Mandan, the son of Charles and Harried (Cacek) Toman. He was raised and educated in Mandan. In 1939 he earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from North Dakota Agricultural College. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Slope and Morton counties. He worked for Kaiser Enterprises, where he was superintendent of various projects, including the Grand Coulee Dam and harbor stabilization in Greys Harbor, Wash., and Long Beach, Calif. Edward married Harriett McDowell, July 16, 1941, in Fargo. He served in the armed forces from 1942 to 1945, serving in desert operations in Africa and in the invasion of Italy. In 1946 he and his brothers established a conglomerate partnership consisting of Sanitary Plumbing and Heating, Toman Cleaners and Toman Engineering Co. Edward operated Sanitary Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 1980.

He was very active in community affairs, serving on various committees on behalf of the city, promoting various attractions to the business community. He was active in and promoted the Custer Drama, a community undertaking depicting the military life of Custer. He had served as a commander of the Gilbert S. Furness Post No. 40, president of Mandan Lions Club and was a member of Mandan Elks. He was also the recipient of the coveted Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lion's Club International. He was also very active in the First Presbyterian Church, having served as deacon and trustee.

He is survived by his wife, Harriett; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gerald Patterson, Del Ray Beach, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Cheryl, Los Angeles; two grandchildren, Sarah Patterson, Baltimore, and Devon Patterson, Chicago; and two brothers, George, Mandan, and Ray, Petaluma, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bernard.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to First Lutheran Church, Mandan.

Helen Helmenstein
NEW SALEM -- Helen Helmenstein, 82, New Salem, died July 17, 1996, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT today at the Presbyterian Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Mary-Lee Lint officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Helen was born Aug. 10, 1913, in New Salem, the daughter of Gottleib and Agnes (Patterson) Woehrle. She was raised and educated in New Salem, graduating from New Salem High School. She married David Helmenstein in October 1934 in Mandan. She worked at the Red Owl, Co-op and Jack and Jill grocery stores until she retired in 1976.

Helen was active in the Presbyterian Church, where she belonged to the Ladies Aid and the Bible Study Group. She was a member of Homemakers Club. She loved to travel and read.

She will be missed by many because of her kind and loving ways.

She is survived by one son, Darrell, Bismarck; her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Clarence Paschke, Fargo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Alice and Doris.
