William Whalen
GRAND FORKS -- William J. Whalen Jr., 74, Grand Forks, died July 18, 1996, in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.

He is survived by four sons, William, Bismarck, George, Grand Forks, Thomas, Royal Oak, Mich., and Daniel, Lake Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Maureen Czapiewski, Rosemount, Minn., Mary Jean Dvorak, Grand Forks, and Bridget Samson, Apple Valley, Minn.; two brothers, Conelius, Mentor, Minn., and Larry, Grand Forks; and three sisters, Nikie Gillett, Bottineau, Betty Palmiscno, Grand Forks, and Pat Kuller, Seattle. Edward Toman
Edward C. Toman, 81, Mandan, died July 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital as a result of heart problems. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Glenn Ramsey officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.to 1:30 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Edward C. Toman was born May 22, 1915, in Mandan, the son of Charles and Harried (Cacek) Toman. He was raised and educated in Mandan. In 1939 he earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from North Dakota Agricultural College. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Slope and Morton counties. He worked for Kaiser Enterprises, where he was superintendent of various projects, including the Grand Coulee Dam and harbor stabilization in Greys Harbor, Wash., and Long Beach, Calif. Edward married Harriett McDowell, July 16, 1941, in Fargo. He served in the armed forces from 1942 to 1945, serving in desert operations in Africa and in the invasion of Italy. In 1946 he and his brothers established a conglomerate partnership consisting of Sanitary Plumbing and Heating, Toman Cleaners and Toman Engineering Co. Edward operated Sanitary Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 1980.

He was active in community affairs, serving on various committees on behalf of the city, promoting various attractions to the business community. He was active in and promoted the Custer Drama, a community undertaking depicting the military life of Custer. He had served as a commander of the Gilbert S. Furness Post No. 40, president of Mandan Lions Club and was a member of Mandan Elks. He was also the recipient of the coveted Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions Club International. He was also very active in the First Presbyterian Church, having served as deacon and trustee.

He is survived by his wife, Harriett; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gerald Patterson, Del Ray Beach, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Cheryl, Los Angeles; two grandchildren, Sarah Patterson, Baltimore, and Devon Patterson, Chicago; and two brothers, George, Mandan, and Ray, Petaluma, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bernard.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to First Presbyterian Church, Mandan.

Herbert Gartner
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, Herbert Gartner, 80, Bismarck, left this earthly life on July 17, 1996. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was born April 22, 1916, in Goodrich, the son of John and Eva (Buechler) Gartner, the second of four sons. He attended school in Goodrich, and married Alvina Moser, March 10, 1938. After farming in Goodrich, they moved to Bismarck, where he was employed at Bismarck Grocery and later at Butler Machinery. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending many hours in his garden. He worked hard all his life and was an honest man and a loving father.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alvina; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary, Cumberland, Md.; one daughter and son-in-law, Constance and David Roller, Salt Lake City; three brothers, Reuben, Lodi, Calif., Harry, Bismarck, and Willis, Wing; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to American Heart Association.

Raynond Renner
BEULAH -- Raymond F. Renner, 72, Beulah, died July 17, 1996, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Zap, with the Rev. Karin Derenne officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by Herman Schmidt Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7759 of Beulah.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Raymond Fred Renner was born April 16, 1924, at Ree, a son of Matthew and Marie (Koenig) Renner. He was raised in the Zap area and attended rural school north of Zap. He was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ree. Ray served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and also in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He was stationed in the South Pacific. On June 20, 1948, he married Ellen Weigum at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Wittenburg, north of Zap. They farmed north of Zap for many years. Ray worked at the Garrison Dam and was a truck driver for Gravel Products, Minot. He retired in 1987. They moved to Beulah in 1992. Ray became a resident of Beulah Community Nursing Home, July 8, 1996.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Zap; the Herman Schmidt Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7759 of Beulah, the AMVETS of Beulah and the Beulah Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carol and Ron Schafer, Chandler, Ariz., Sharon Engen, Bismarck, and Joanne and Bill Mindt, Zap; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lynell Renner, Zap; nine grandchildren, Jeff Schafer, Kent, Wash., Mark Schafer, Chandler, Ariz., Kara and Ryan Tesky, Bismarck, David and Justin Feil, Zap, Tara Mindt, Flasher, Danielle and Kelsey Renner, Zap; his mother, Marie Renner, Beulah Community Nursing Home; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Arnold and LaVerne Renner, Caldwell, Texas, and Audrey Nissen, Minot; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his father, Matthew; one brother, Paul; one sister, Shirley Thomas; and one son-in-law, Allan Engen.

Thomas Walhood
RYDER -- Thomas Clark Walhood, 65, Ryder, died July 14, 1996, at his home. Services were held Saturday at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Burial was in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

He is survived by two brothers, Paul, Minot, and Alfred, Polson, Mont., and five sisters, Marie Jensen, Polson, Lorene Fix, Spokane, Wash., Ida Nesson, Polson, Christine Irwin, Bismarck, and Donna Goebel, Williston.

Ralph Thomas
KILLDEER -- Ralph Thomas, 78, Killdeer, died July 18, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killdeer, with burial in Killdeer Cemetery.

He is survived by one daughter, Rita Hanson, Layton, Utah; three sons, Neil, Spokane, Wash., Brent, Killdeer, and Dean, Chicago; three sisters, Rose Schmidt, Dickinson, and Philomena Hovden and Jean Schepper, both of Killdeer; and three brothers, Frank and John, both of Killdeer, and Joe, Rosalia, Wash. Beverly Sayler
Beverly N. Sayler, 64, 3037 N. 31st St., died July 20, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Church of the Nazarene, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Ida Riehl
Ida Riehl, 74, 413 Lansing Lane, died July 20, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ascension Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Ida Leingang was born Oct. 11, 1921, at St. Anthony to Jacob and Mathilda (Martin) Leingang. She attended school at St. Anthony, completing the eighth grade. Ida married Melchior (M.A.) Riehl, July 16, 1946, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Anthony. Ida and Melchior farmed in the Raleigh area until the fall of 1973 when they moved to Bismarck. She worked for the Elks at Mandan and Arrow Cleaners, Bismarck.

Ida was a member of Flasher American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Ilene and Jerry Wiechman, Flasher, Irene and Bob Storick, Bismarck, and Adele and David Ell, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and JoAnn, Mandan, and Randy and Tina, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Tina, Renee and Mandi Wiechman, Rodney Storick, Mathilda Ell, Levi Riehl, Jennifer, Randall and Remington Riehl; two great-grandsons, Blain and Brandon Storick; one brother, Simon, Mandan; and one sister, Clem Riehl, Flasher; and all her special friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melchior (M.A.) who died Dec. 16, 1991; her parents; an infant brother, Peter; an infant sister, Kathryn; three brothers, John, Joe and Jacob ``Jack"; and one sister, Eva "Betty" Volk.

Marth Schultz
VALLEY CITY -- Martha Schultz, 84, Valley City, died July 21, 1996, in the Valley City nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with burial in Gackle Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Elmer, Jamestown, and LeRoy, West Fargo; one daughter, Arberdella Lanning, Jamestown; one brother, William Schock, Lehr; and two sisters, Katie Krueger, Wishek, and Eva Widmer, Jamestown. (Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Hilda Sprecher
BOWMAN -- Hilda Suko Sprecher, 81, Bowman, died July 21, 1996, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Bowman Lutheran Church, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon, S.D.

She is survived by three daughters, Betty Pearson, Bowman, Al-Dean Fischer, Sioux Falls, S.D., and LeAunna Ingram, San Antonio; two sons, Donald Suko, Madison, Conn., and Mark Suko, Layton, Utah; two brothers, Oscar Eslinger, Reeder, and Arnold Eslinger, Oysterville, Wash.; and one sister, Viola Boknecht, Seattle. Genevieve Enderle
BOWMAN -- Genevieve G. Enderle, 84, Bowman, died July 22, 1996, in the Bowman nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Home Chapel, Bowman, with burial in Reeder Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Doug, Beulah; two daughters, Vera Gorder, Reeder, and Shirley Schafer, Dickinson; and one brother, Sylvester Kelly, Pendleton, Ore. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Raymond Christenson
HETTINGER -- Raymond Christenson, 73, Hettinger, died July 21, 1996, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with burial in Hettinger Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; one son, Sheldon, Spokane, Wash.; and two daughters, Cara Larson, Seligman, Mo., and Bonnie Viken, Hettinger. (Walby Chapel, Hettinger)

Ervin Hauck
NEW LEIPZIG -- Ervin Hauck, 78, New Leipzig, died July 20, 1996. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at Christus Congregational Church United Church of Christ, New Leipzig, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by two sons, Larry, New Leipzig, and Wayne, Bothell, Wash.; and two daughters, Diane Mutschelknaus, Elgin, and Jackie White, Seattle. (Hertz Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

Tyler Steiner
BELFIELD -- Tyler Steiner, 41, Belfield, died July 22, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Georgia Bosch
DICKINSON -- Georgia Bosch, 84, Dickinson, died July 20, 1996, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by four sons, William, James, Joel and Paul, all of Dickinson; one daughter, Loralee Stroh, Fargo. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Michael Wanner
DICKINSON -- Michael Wanner, 73, Dickinson, died July 22, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie; two daughters, Mary Ann Bender, Mandan, and Carlotta Johnson, Littleton, Colo.; two sons, David, Englewood, Colo., and Robert, Dickinson; four brothers, Nick, Colorado Springs, Colo., Frank and John, both of Dickinson, and Jack, Yakima, Wash.; and two sisters, Ann Fox, Spokane, Wash., and Sally Metz, Dickinson. Minnie Schafer
Minnie B. Schafer, 85, Mandan, died July 21, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in St. Lawrence Church Cemetery, Flasher.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, where a Rosary Society rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a rosary at 7:30 and a parish vigil at 7.

Minnie Roll was born July 20, 1911, at New Salem, the daughter of Joseph and Emilia (Erhardt) Roll. Minnie attended school at Glen Ullin through the eighth grade, at which time they moved to Flasher. She married Jerome Schafer, Oct. 8, 1929, at Fallon. They farmed and worked around the Fallon and Flasher community until moving to Mandan 1967.

She is survived by eight sons and five daughters-in-law, Lawrence and Sharon, Savanna, Ill., Matt, and Ben and Linda, all of Wilton, Herman and Shirley, and Gordon, all of Mandan, Leonard, Ely, Nev., Arnie and Marilyn, Jamestown, and DuWayne and Gladeen, Bismarck; three daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Edwin Smith, Bismarck, Delores and James Cain, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Shirley and Ken Reed, Mandan; 39 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John, Aurora, Colo., and Florian, Fargo; and five sisters, Margaret Conner and Bertha Erhardt, both of Mandan, Monica Topping, Tacoma, Wash., and Pauline Erhardt and Lucy Ressler, both of Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, who died in 1970; her parents; two sons, Daniel and Leo; one daughter-in-law, Diane; two brothers, Matt and Frank; and two sisters, Eva Tobiason and Ida Ferderer.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the Leukemia Foundation.

Donald McKay
Donald Henry McKay, 73, Seattle, died July 14, 1996, in Seattle. A memorial service was held July 20 at Washington Veterans Home, Retsil, Wash., with the Rev. Dun Jukam officiating. A memorial service will also be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pollock Lutheran Church, Pollock, S.D.

Donald was born April 16, 1923, in Pollock, the son of William and Maude (Batchelder) McKay. While growing up on the North Dakota plains, his family and friends referred to him as ``Donnic Boy." Don enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, May 26, 1945, and served in the Pacific during World War II. He received an honorable discharge on Aug. 23, 1946, as a private first class.

Don belonged to the International Association of Plasterers and Cement Masons in Alaska, Colorado, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington. He worked on major projects including the Garrison Dam, coal power plants and nuclear missile sites. He spent nine years at the Job Corp in Colbran, Colo., teaching young men to become cement masons.

He is survived by three daughters, Joy Tansey, Bellevue, Wash., Donna Thompson, San Clemente, Calif., and Cindy Navratil, Hazen; four sons, Robert and James, both of Stanton, Rodney, Hazen, and Tim, Port Orchard, Wash.; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Vera Schnable and Alice Renner; and one brother, Burnette.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Kenneth.

Donald Bitz Sr.
Donald E. Bitz Sr., 66, Mandan, died July 21, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Donald was born June 12, 1930, in Jamestown, the son of Berthold and Catherine (Job-Retzer) Bitz. He attended school in Jamestown, graduating in 1948. On Nov. 13, 1949, Donald married Blanche Kraulik in Jamestown. Donald worked for the Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads in Jamestown and Mandan for 42 years, retiring in June 1992.

Donald was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Mandan Golden Age Club and Mandan Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Blanche; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Don Jr. and Mary, Bismarck, and David, Lincoln; two daughters, Sharon, Jamestown, and Kathy, Lincoln; one granddaughter, Melissa, and her fiancee, Scott Anderson, Bismarck; one grandson, Dustin, and his friend, Gwen Meek, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Lenora and Jake Suko, Jamestown; one aunt and three uncles, Lena and Al Hopland, Redlands, Calif., August Rudolph, Jamestown, and Miles Fandrey, Jamestown; many nieces and nephews; and all of his special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Emil, who died in World War II.
