Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday.

Known as Zoe to her many friends, she was born Kathryn Zoe Savage in Anaconda, Mont., on June 26, 1916, the youngest of three children born to Frank S. and Johanna M. Savage. She graduated from Anaconda High School at age 16 and, following her father's death, she moved to Minneapolis with her mother and her sister, Alice.

From 1933 to 1937 she attended the University of Minnesota, where she met and married Clyde L. Smith in 1937. They lived in Little Falls, Minn., for two years, then returned to Minneapolis when her husband entered the University of Minnesota Medical School. Her husband was commissioned a Lieutenant (j.g.) in the U.S. Navy during World War II; through those years Mrs. Smith lived in Minneapolis with her mother, sister and uncle, and worked for the personnel department at the University Hospital as a personal secretary and as an introductory speaker at the Medical School's Continuing Education Center. Zoe and Clyde's first three children were born in Minneapolis, after moving to St. Paul they had three more children. When her husband joined the Missouri Valley (now Mid-Dakota) Clinic in 1953, the family moved to Bismarck, where a seventh and eighth child were born.

After postponing the completion of her studies for 35 years while raising her children, Mrs. Smith returned to college, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in social work with a minor in French from the University of Mary in 1974. In 1976, she also completed a summer graduate course in early childhood development at Harvard University's School of Education. During her studies she taught at Cathedral Grade School and Hughes Junior High School. After her graduation, she worked as Acting Director of the Bismarck Early Childhood Education Program (BECEP), where she developed the Infant-Toddler ("TWIGS") program and was responsible for public relations and outreach as well as coordination with community resources and agencies.

Mrs. Smith was very active in numerous community activities, serving as an officer of several organizations. She was a member and past president of the North Dakota State Medical Auxiliary, and for 20 years served on the board of directors for the local Meals on Wheels program. She was a co-founder of the Ancilla Club; while serving as its president, she initiated its fundraising lecture series for the then Mary College. During her years with Ancilla many notable speakers -- including Pearl S. Buck, Bennett Cerf, Erma Bombeck, Al Capp, Bill Russell, the Amazing Kreskin and Ann Landers -- appeared before Bismarck audiences. She was a member of the Current Events Club for more than 30 years and served as its president in 1983. Mrs. Smith was president of LaSertoma and the Bismarck Women's Community Council. She was named vice-president of the Bismarck-Mandan Voluntary Action Center. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Parish and Catholic Daughters. She served as president of Church Women United for four years. For five years she sponsored the Indian Culture Club at the North Dakota State Penitentiary. She also was a member of the American Association of University Women.

Mrs. Smith was a strong supporter of local music and the arts. She was a long-time member of the Thursday Music Club, and as a participant in the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony League she was an advocate and spokesperson for the renovation of the Belle Mehus Auditorium. Her interest in music inspired her to pursue musical composition as a hobby. She also loved the theater and performing, and played one of the lead roles in a Civic Theater stage production of "The Winslow Boy" in the mid 1950s. At the time of Bismarck's Centennial, she researched and helped produce a video on the history of medicine in Bismarck.

Awards Mrs. Smith has received include a recognition plaque from Meals on Wheels, an Appreciation Award for sincere and devoted effort as a sponsor of the Indian Culture Club at the North Dakota State Penitentiary, the Voluntary Action Award in recognition of outstanding contributions as a volunteer, and a plaque in appreciation for Outstanding Performance with the Bismarck Centennial Association. As a senior at the University of Minnesota, she was elected to Zeta Phi Eta, an honorary speech sorority.
