Raymond Summers
DICKINSON -- Raymond E. Summers, 78, Dickinson, died Nov. 7, 1996, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. George Dukart officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson, with military rites provided by Dickinson Veterans Drill Team.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. by George Keller.

Raymond E. Summers was born July 8, 1918, on the family homestead northwest of Dunn Center, to Ellis E. and Vellora G. (Grow) Summers. Later he moved with his family to Dunn Center, Werner, N.D. and then to Dickinson in 1928, where he had resided since. He graduated from Dickinson High School in 1936 and attended Dickinson State Teacher's College for a time.

He joined the National Guard, Company K in December of 1940 and went to Camp Claiborne, La., for basic training. In December of 1941 they were transferred to Hermiston, Ore., then overseas to Melbourne, Australia, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and from there to the Fiji Islands for rest and further training. They were shipped to Bougainville and then to the Philipines. He received an honorable discharge in June of 1945 and returned to Dickinson where he had lived until the time of his death.

Raymond was employed by the Northern Pacific Railway Co. in 1945 as a fireman, and later as an engineer retiring in July of 1983. On April 19, 1947, he married Eleanor J. Kelsch of Lefor at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson.

Raymond was a lifetime member of the 164th Infantry Association, a 50-year member of the American Legion, the V.F.W., a 50-year member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers (which later became the United Transportation Union) and the Theodore Roosevelt Amateur Radio Club.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor, Dickinson; one son, Dean, Bismarck; one daughter, Janet Summers, Springville, Utah; one grandson, Matthew Summers, Bismarck; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Arthur M., Chico, Calif., and Charles Vernon and Arlene, Shullsburg, Wis.; and one sister, Lorene A. Summers, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Wilbur E.

Betty Weigum
HAZEN -- Betty Weigum, 86, Hazen, died Nov. 9, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Reinhold Roth
ELGIN -- Reinhold Roth, 82, Elgin, died Nov. 4, 1996, at the Elgin hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at Hope Congregational Church, Elgin. Burial will be in Hope Congregational Cemetery, Elgin.

He is survived by four sisters, Louisa Hirning, Mott, Frida Bennett, Grandview, Wash., and Hilda and Esther Zimmerman, both of New Leipzig; and two brothers, Clarence and Paul, both of Elgin. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

Lee Christensen
L.D. (Lee) Christensen, 72, a lifelong resident of Kenmare whose record of public service to his home community and to the State of North Dakota lasted a lifetime, died of cancer Nov. 9, 1996, at his home in Bismarck. He and his wife, Marjorie, maintained homes in both Kenmare and Bismarck, where they recently moved for the winter.

He was born Oct. 9, 1924, at Kenmare, the son of Walter and Marie (Davick) Christensen. He attended Baden Township (Ward County) School through the eighth grade and graduated from Kenmare High School in 1941. He attended North Dakota State University at Fargo from 1941 to 1943, interrupting his college education for service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He completed flight training as a naval fighter pilot and served on an aircraft in the South Pacific. Following discharge from military service, he returned to NDSU and graduated in 1948 with a bachelor of science Degree in agricultural economics. While attending NDSU he was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

He married Marjorie Aamodt on Feb. 18, 1956, at Fargo. They since have lived in Kenmare.

He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservationist from 1948 to 1950. He was an instructor for the Veteran-on-the-Farm training program at Bowbells from 1950 to 1952. He also was an insurance agent for Farmers Union and Equitable Life insurance companies, and a hail adjuster in North Dakota and South Dakota. He began farming full time in 1956.

In 1968, while returning to Kenmare from a meeting in Bismarck, the plane he was piloting crashed and burned at Kenmare. He was critically injured, and as he vowed, he recovered from his injuries and returned to active life.

When his father died in 1956, he was appointed to fill his position on the National Soil Conservation District Board of Supervisors, serving there until 1971. During that time he was elected to the board of the North Dakota Association of Soil Conservation Districts. He held all offices in the association, including that of president. He chaired the state's agricultural stabilization and conservation committee in 1976 and served until 1980.

He was involved in a number of activities in the Kenmare region, having served on the Kenmare School and township boards. He was a member of and held office in the Farmers Union and Nazareth Lutheran Church at Kenmare. He also had assisted with various youth groups over the years.

A Democrat, he was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1960 and served until 1965. He served in the State Senate from 1967 to 1975 and was minority leader during 1971-73. He was named by then Gov. George Sinner to the state Board of Higher Education in 1985. During his tenure the board established the chancellor system of governing the state's 11 campuses of higher learning.

Christensen was the recipient of various honors, including the honor award of the National Soil Conservation Society of America in 1979 for significant contributions in the field of natural resources conservation. A recognition dinner was held in his honor at Kenmare in 1992 following his retirement from the state Board of Higher Education. He was recognized by fellow Democrats at an event held in Minot last February. At the time of death, he was serving on the Legislative Branch Consultation of the North Dakota Consensus Council.

He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare Country Club, Minot Elks Lodge and Soil Conservation Society of America.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Tim Carlson, Marquette, Mich.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kirk, Kenmare, and David and Gayle LaChapelle, Grand Forks; three granddaughters, Erin, Courtney and Mallory Carlson, Marquette; one brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Maureen, Kenmare; two sisters, Myrna Christopherson, Chicago, and Carol Bothun, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Kenmare. There will be no reviewal at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare, or to the North Dakota Chapter of the Nature Conservancy at Bismarck.

Active bearers for the service will be Richard Backes, Marvin Condon, Donald Giffey, Therm Kalldahl, Tom Krenelka, Richard Lokken, Gil Melland, Herbert Meschke, Delmer Nelson, John Odland and Rolland Redlin.

Sylvia Adams
BELFIELD -- Sylvia E. Adams, 56, Belfield, died Nov. 7, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Belfield.

She is survived by two daughters, Quadraline Fulton, Beach, and Clarissa M. Kottre, Lincoln; one son, Donjowea, Dickinson; one sister, Bernajean Anderson, Finley; and two brothers, George Heiser, Finley, and Gilbert Heiser, both of Taylor. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Betty Weigum
HAZEN -- Betty Weigum, 86, Hazen, died Nov. 9, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Revs. Walt Wolff and Duane Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Greg, Justin and Mark Bohrer, Vernon Baszler, Gerald Galloway and Jack McCrory.

Visitation will be during 1-6 p.m. today at the church.

Betty was born March 20, 1910, at Egeland, a daughter of Samuel and Amanda (Krueger) Baerwald. She was raised and educated north of Hazen. She worked for a former U.S. senator and North Dakiota governor, John Moses and family. On June 6, 1929, she married Fred Weigum at Egeland. They farmed north of Hazen for 5[1/2] years, then moved to Hazen, where they went into partnership in the German Kitchen Restaurant, which they operated until 1949.

Betty was organist for Peace Lutheran Church in Hazen for 42 years and was also the choir director for the majority of that time. She taught Sunday school and Bible school and was active in the church women's organization. She was a charter member of the Hazen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Fred died Sept. 28, 1995, and Betty moved to Bismarck in October 1995. In July 1996 she became a resident of the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.

She is survived by her children, Donna Jean and Bill Roleder, Penn Valley, Calif., Marlene and Duane Bohrer, Bismarck, and Jim Weigum, Parshall; her grandchildren, Jon and Pam Roleder and Joy and David Kunz, all of California, Greg and Patty Bohrer and Mark and Kim Bohrer, all of Bismarck, and Beth Bohrer, Houston, Texas; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lillian Galloway, Beulah, and Ella Baszler, Underwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; one sister; and one infant twin sister. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Ernest Rask
FLASHER -- Ernest Rask, 71, Flasher, died Nov. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Carl Bishop
Carl A. Bishop, 71, Woodworth, died Nov. 8, 1996, in an Oklahoma City hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Woodworth. Burial will be in Gem Cemetery, Woodworth.

He is survived by one son, Douglas, Colstrip, Mont.; four daughters, Lou Ann Redlin, Woodworth, Shelly Williams, Stroud, Okla., Renee Ray, Las Vegas, Nev., and Kimberley Kobza, Trumansburg, N.Y.; and three sisters, Mary Bailey, Portland, Ore., Vidella Stevens, Tennessee, and Lola Mully, Reno, Nev. Elizabeth Blackmore
Elizabeth P. Blackmore, 91, Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Tappen, died Nov. 10, 1996, in an Anchorage nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Helen Wagner
GOODRICH -- Helen Wagner, 75, Goodrich, died Nov. 8, 1996, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Burial will be in Goodrich City Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Beverly Enoch, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Mike Bartsch, Choteau, Mont., and Victor Bartsch, Harvey; and two sisters, Mary Wells, Sylvania, Ohio, and Magdalena Leier, Esmond. (Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky)

Ernest Rask
FLASHER -- Ernest William Rask, 71, Flasher, died Nov. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital after a long illness. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at American Lutheran Church, Flasher, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating.

Ernest William Rask was born Oct. 11, 1925, in rural Mandan to Axel T.M. and Edna (Carlson) Rask. He married Adella Marie Toman. Ernest lived in North Dakota all of his life, except the years 1964-1993, when he moved his family to Big Bear Lake, Calif. He and Adella returned to Flasher in 1993. Ernest was an electrical lineman until Oct. 11, 1988, when he retired. Ernest was a member of American Lutheran Church and American Legion of Big Bear Lake, Calif. He also belonged to the Elks Club of Mandan and Big Bear Lake.

Ernest is survived by his loving wife, Adella; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Ernest Jr., Columbus, Ind., Jeff and Carol, Victorville, Calif., David, Las Vegas, and Robing, Flasher; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Bill Lytle, San Bernardino, Calif., Lyndell and Ron Kovar, Flasher, and Alaine and Mark Uthus, Big Bear Lake; 16 grandchildren; two brothers and four sisters-in-law, James C. and Agnes Rask, A. Leland and Vivian Rask, Beverly Rask and Dorothy Rask; and two sisters, Arleen Johnson and Ruth Holler.

Nora Marx
BRADDOCK -- Nora Marx, 95, Braddock, died Nov. 11, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Braddock, with the Rev. Jeff Zwack officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today simultaneously at the funeral home and the church.

Eleanora Rose Kuhn was born June 14, 1901, at the farm home near Millerville, Minn., one of nine children. Nora married Thomas Marx at Millerville on June 2, 1925. They came to Braddock and spent their married life there. Tom worked in McCusker's Store until he became the Standard Oil bulk dealer. He retired in December 1962 and died April 5, 1963. Nora continued to live in their home until she was hospitalized Nov. 9, 1996.

She is survived by five daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Pete Naaden, Braddock, Dolores Razee, Sun City, Ariz., Loreen Hartman, Milbank, S.D., Donna and Carl Bolan, Eugene, Ore., and Glenaris and John Sisco, Springfield, Mo.; one brother, Fred, Millerville; 42 grandchildren; and 107 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and an infant son.

Sophie Jilek
DICKINSON -- Sophie Jilek, 87, Dickinson, died Nov. 11, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Elizabeth Blackmore
TAPPEN -- Elizabeth Phyllis Blackmore, 91, Anchorage, Alaska, died Nov. 10, 1996, in Anchorage. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Tappen Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Riley, Wasilla, Alaska.

DICKINSON -- Walter Goetz, 78, Dickinson, died Nov. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

John Borth
KULM -- John Borth, 87, Kulm, died Nov. 10, 1996, in the Aberdeen, S.D., hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, Kulm, with burial in the church cemetery.

WILLISTON -- Barbara Anne Stoner, 47, Williston, died Nov. 3, 1996, in her home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Lynn Kindsvogel
HEBRON -- Lynn O. Kindsvogel, 78, Tillamook, Ore., formerly of Hebron, died Nov. 8, 1996, in Tillamook. Services will be today at Waud's Funeral Home, Tillamook, with burial in Bay City I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Becky; one son, Fran, Woodburn, Ore.; one brother, Ned, Bismarck; and two sisters, Louise Hienle, Hebron, and Bertha Boschee, Spokane, Wash.

Violet Hogue
Violet Hogue, 90, 1217 Victory Place, died Nov. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.

Violet was born Dec. 17, 1905, north of Mandan, the daughter of Peter and Petrina (Hauge) Fristad. Violet graduated from Mandan High School in 1925. She married Raymond Hogue Dec. 17, 1927. They farmed north of Bismarck. In 1959 they moved to Bismarck and lived at 1217 Victory Place. Violet and Raymond had three children. Raymond died in 1979.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Jim Wachter, Bismarck; son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Karen, Bismarck; 10 grandchildren, Pat and Louise Wachter, Mike and Kelly Wachter, Cindy and Mike Huelskamp, Rita and Russ Kunz, all of Bismarck, Carolyn and Mike Marak, Meridian, Idaho, David and Paula Hogue, Minot, Kellie and Troy Pierce, Pittsburgh, Janice and Jim Kinahan, Marietta, Ga., Sandy and Calvin Thelon, Grand Forks, Rebecca and Mike Maynard, Franklin Lakes, N.J.; 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; one daughter, Ramona; her twin sister, Viola; three other sisters; and four brothers.

For the last several years she has enjoyed the friends and activities of the Bismarck Senior Center.
