Bernice Schwartz
GLEN ULLIN -- Bernice Schwartz, 78, Glen Ullin, died Sept. 27, 1997, in Elgin. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MDT Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, and 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin, where a wake service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. tonight.

Bernice was born June 21, 1919, in Bismarck, to Louis and Maria Louise (Mueller) Mische. She attended grade school at Richardton, and high school at Glen Ullin. She attended Dickinson Normal School in 1941-1942 and attained a standard teaching degree. She married Carl Schwartz June 22, 1942, at Sand Point, Idaho. She taught school for two years near Richardton and two years near Golden Valley. She moved to Glen Ullin in 1970 where she has resided since. She entered Marian Manor Nursing Home in May 1995.

She was a member of Christian Mothers, Homemakers, Glen Ullin Senior Citizens and Sacred Heart Church.

She is survived by two sons, Delmar, Laguna Hills, Calif., and Roger, Phoenix; one daughter, Erlys Spitzer, Los Angeles; three grandchildren, Steve Schwartz, Genyll Doalson and Kristen Schwartz; one sister, Lena Kuhn, Fargo; and one half brother, Reinhold Mische, Forsythe, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister.

Edward Flanagan
Edward Flanagan, 94, Casper, Wyo., formerly of Bismarck, died Sept. 29, 1997, in Casper. Arrangements are pending with Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck.

Luella Rask
HARVEY -- Luella Rask, 92, Harvey, formerly of Hurdsfield and Chaseley, died Sept. 29, 1997, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Chaseley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Chaseley Cemetery.

She is survived by four sons, Milt, Minden, Neb., Vernon, Randle, Wash., Ardell, Fessenden, and Fred, Larimore; three daughters, June Whipple, Olympia, Wash., Barbara Hieb, Great Falls, Mont., and Annetta Kallis, Hurdsfield; and one sister, Freyda Hughes, Loveland, Colo. Lenard Eagle
NEW TOWN -- Lenard L. Eagle Sr., 61, New Town, died Sept. 28, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, New Town. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, White Shield.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen; five sons, Ronnie, Scott, Cletus, Tom Jr. and Terry, all of New Town; two brothers, Eugene, Cannon Ball, and Thomas, White River, Ariz.; and one sister, Marcia Kirkaldie, New Town. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

Marvin Gums
Marvin Gums, 60, Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Streeter, died Sept. 27, 1997, in Arizona. Services will be held at 11 a.m. PT Friday, at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes, Sacramento. Burial will be in Sunset Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento.

He is survived by his wife, Winona; four sons, Russell, Byron, Scott and Eric; three brothers, Lefty, Art and Alvin; and one sister, Rebecca Beglow.

Emily Helm
Emily Helm, 82, Colfax, Wash., died Sept. 28, 1997, in Colfax. Services will be held at 1 p.m. PT Thursday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Colfax. Burial will be in Colfax Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Dwaine, Washburn, and Harlin, Deer Park, Wash.; six daughters, Elaine Geigle, Pottsville, Ark., Elva Blumhagen, Bismarck, Phyllis Wood, Baudette, Minn., Eunice Toombs, Spokane, Wash., Joyce Miller, Post Falls, Idaho, and Gail McNeilly, Colfax, Wash.; and one brother, Harry Jesz, McClusky. Mary Brave
SOLEN -- Mary M. Brave, 77, Solen, died Sept. 28, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at Solen City Hall, with the Rev. Casimir Poluck officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at Solen City Hall, where a wake service will begin at 7 p.m.

Mary is survived by three daughters, Thomasine Loans Arrow and Shirley Loans Arrow, both of Solen, and Marcella Kopp, Mandan; an adopted daughter, Melissa White Eagle, Wolf Point, Mont.; one son, Joseph Brave Sr., Minneapolis, Minn.; an adopted son, Fred Black Cloud, Cannon Ball; four sisters, Vivian (Red Tomahawk) Wilson, McLaughlin, S.D., Mayme (Red Tomahawk) Kronberger, St. Paul, Minn., LaVern Junker, Gillette, Wyo., and Florence Grey Eagle, Minneapolis; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and their families; and a special friend, George Iron Road, Fort Yates. Peter Haff
BREIEN -- Peter J. Haff, 64, Breien, died Sept. 30, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m.

Peter was born Sept. 18, 1933 in Elgin, the son of Carl and Lena Haff. Peter's love was his horses, wagon trains, trail rides, rodeos and Sunday afternoon drives. He will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. Peter always made time for his family and grandkids. They were the love of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Gardine; one son, Mike, Breien; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Char and Jeff Boehm, Hazen, Lynn and Kip Schmidt, Pierre, S.D., Paula Thomas, Mandan, and Amanda Haff, Breien; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lena Haff; one sister, Mary Ann; and two brothers, John and Michael.

Nicholas Geiger

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 8 p.m.

Nicholas Geiger was born Aug. 8, 1966 in Bismarck, the son of Edmund and Nerina (Boehm) Geiger. He was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1984. After high school Nick worked for a dairy farm in New Salem and L&H Electric in Mandan. He had been employed with a carpenter in Shady Cove, Ore. the past four years.

He is survived by his parents, Edmund and Nerina, Mandan; three brothers, Bruce and Wesley, both of Mandan, and Alan, Fargo; one sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Conway Kangas, Mandan; and his grandmother, Katherine Geiger, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ralph Geiger.

Leonard Schmidt
Leonard Schmidt, 74, Upland, Calif., died Aug. 17, 1997, at his home in California. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services, at the church.

Leonard L. Schmidt was born Sept. 28, 1922 in Huff, the son of Joseph and Mary (Graner) Schmidt. He was raised and educated in the Huff area. He married Betty Rothschiller Sept. 1, 1942 in Bismarck. He served as a Yeoman First Class in the United States Navy for four years. Leonard owned the Stockman and Buckhorn Bars in Mandan, and built the first bowling alley in Mandan, Ten Spot Lanes.

He moved to Upland in 1984 and managed the Pom Lanes in Pomona for a time. He franchised the Stop and Go Store in Montclair, Calif. for 15 years before buying it in 1980, when he named it Len's Market. He sold it and retired three years later. Leonard went back to work in 1984 as manager of the U-Store-M in Pomona for 13 years.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of the Moose, American Legion and St. Anthony Verein, all of Mandan.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons, Frank, Blaine, Minn., Patrick, Upland, Calif., and Lenny, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; four daughters, Gail Andrade, Alta Loma, Calif., Gladnie Bender and Dee Clark, both of Upland, and Lori Ruker, Ontario, Calif.; one sister, Dorothy Goertel, St. Anthony; one brother, Joseph, Portland, Ore.; eight grandsons; five granddaughters; one great-grandson; and a special friend, Jim "Teach" Dineen, Claremont, Calif.

Memorials may be directed to St. Joseph, Christ the King and Spirit of Life Catholic Church.

Chester Larson
SHEYENNE -- Chester M. Larson, 88, Sheyenne, died Sept. 30, 1997, in the New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Grace Lutheran Church, Sheyenne. Burial will be in Augustana Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sheyenne.

He is survived by his wife, Leona, New Rockford; two sons, Alton, Bismarck, and Gale, Grand Island, Neb.; and one brother, LeRoy, Svea, Minn. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)

Ruth Klein
CARRINGTON -- Ruth Klein, 69, Carrington, died Sept. 29, 1997, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Calvary Baptist Church, Carrington. Burial will be in Carrington Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; three sons, Kevin and Robert, both of Carrington, and Douglas, Mapleton; and two sisters, Viola Edinger, Grand Forks, and Mabel Gustafson, Monroe, Wash. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Lawrence Fitzgerald
MCCLUSKY -- Lawrence Fitzgerald, 84, McClusky, died Sept. 30, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Holy Family Catholic Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Lawrence was born July 14, 1913, at Denhoff, to James and Mary (Ritchey) Fitzgerald. He married Laura Broeckel April 24, 1935. She passed away May 30, 1985. Lawrence worked for area farmers in the Wing, Regan, Washburn and Berthold areas until 1963, when they moved to Foxholm where he worked for the Foxholm Public Schools as the custodian. In 1967 he moved to Savage, Mont., where he worked for the Holly Beet Dumps for 10 years. He moved to McClusky in August of 1981.

He is survived by one daughter, Ilene Bakke, Bagley, Minn.; four sons, Larry, Minot, Kenneth, Montevideo, Minn., Jerry, Billings, Mont., and Robert, Savage, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Laura Sherman, Clara Pool and Francis Krueger, all of Bismarck, and Irene Diel, Puyallup, Wash.; and three brothers, Harvey, Bismarck, Bart, East Moline, Ill., and James, Post Falls, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Laura.

Melvin Diehl
Melvin Diehl, 63, 2500 Centennial Road, Bismarck, died Oct. 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Kenneth Olson
KILLDEER -- Kenneth O. Olson, 84, Killdeer, died Sept. 30, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Killdeer. Burial will be in Whetstone Cemetery, rural Killdeer.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline; two sons, Kent and Londell, both of Bismarck; two sisters, Mildred Haaland and Nora Ross; and two brothers, Martin and George. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Gabriel Kinzel
NEW HRADEC -- Gabriel Kinzel, 66, New Hradec, died Oct. 1, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, New Hradec. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha; four sons, Eugene and Robert, both of New Hradec, and Randy and Kevin, both of Dickinson; and two daughters, Sandra Frenzel, New Hradec, and Susan Gustafson, Stanton. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Lester Shapland
HETTINGER -- Lester B. Shapland, 105, Hettinger, died Sept. 27, 1997, in the Hettinger nursing home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday, at First Congregational Church, Hettinger. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Robert, Hettinger. (Walby Chapel of Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Philomina Sturn
STEELE -- Philomina "Minnie" Sturn, 88, Golden Manor Nursing Home, Steele, formerly of Bismarck, died Oct. 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a parish vigil and rosary will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Minnie Schaner was born Sept. 24, 1909 at Crown Butte, the daughter of Michael and Monica (Riedinger) Schaner. She was raised and educated in Crown Butte, and it was there that she married Harry Sturn Oct. 28, 1928. They farmed at Crown Butte until moving to New Salem in 1936. They also farmed at Blue Grass from 1942 to 1946, and at St. Anthony from 1947 to 1954. In 1954 they moved to Bismarck where Minnie was employed in Housekeeping and Central Supplies at St. Alexius Medical Center. Harry died Jan. 27, 1993 in Bismarck.

She was a member of Church of St. Mary, and will fondly be remembered for her love of sewing, gardening and dancing.

She was deeply loved and will be missed by all those who survive her: her daughter, Monica Horning, Arleta, Calif.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Inez, Salem, Ore., Donald and Rose, Mandan, and Richard and Lillian, Bismarck; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathern Parisi, Vallejo, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Pete and Joe; three sisters, Elizabeth Schaaf, Julia Schmidt and Margaret Friesz; her husband, Harry; one son, Charles; and one grandson, Craig.

Josephine Zuelich
Josephine Zuelich, 81, Mandan, died Oct. 1, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Nicholas Geiger
Nicholas Geiger, 31, Shady Cove, Ore., formerly of Mandan, died Sept. 28, 1997, in Oregon. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in St. Vincent's Church Cemetery, Crown Butte.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary at 8 p.m.
