Melvi Diehl
Melvin C. Diehl, 63, 2500 Centennial Road, died Oct. 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. today at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edwin Wehner officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held one hour before services at the church.

Melvin "Happy" Diehl was born Jan. 26, 1934, in Carson, to Calvin and Caroline (Heirning) Diehl. He was raised on the family farm west of Carson. He was baptized in the Congregational Church and attended school at Roosevelt Public School, all of Carson. Melvin took over the family farm and raised his children there until 1972 when he moved to Shields, where he farmed and ranched. In 1986, he moved to Mandan where he worked for Joe Vogel, the Civic Center and the State of North Dakota.

Melvin enjoyed his horses and loved to race them. He seldom missed his sons' basketball, football or track meets. He loved to watch Melvin Jr. rope and enjoyed high school rodeo. He also loved to listen to Kevin sing, especially "Achy Breaky Heart." He will be missed by his friends at Oasis cafe.

He married Margie A. Miller on Jan. 26, 1955, at St. Gertrude's Church, Raleigh.

He is survived by his wife, Margie; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna Paris, Las Vegas; Margie Ann and Kevin Laub, Chamberlain, S.D.; Rosie and Sheldon Johnson, Mandan; and Mary Diehl, Las Vegas; six sons and four daughters-in-law, Calvin and Sharolette, Webster, S.D; Melvin and Annette, Minnewaukan; Kevin and Melody, Casselton; Delvin and Lori, Mandan; Alvin, Las Vegas; and Ivin, Bismarck; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Viola Schock, Elgin; and Wilma and Robert Robidou, Wishek; one brother and sister-in-law, Ervin and Beverly Diehl, Carson; 17 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Caroline Diehl, and one sister, Edith.

Jack Kautzman
SOLEN-- Jack R. Kautzman, 49, Solen, died Oct. 3, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Solen.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan. A parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a parish vigil at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jack was born Oct. 4, 1947, in Bismarck, the son of Jacob and Katherine (Wetsch) Kautzman. He was raised and educated in Solen. Jack owned and operated his own trucking business, JK Trucking, in Solen.

He is survived by his fiance, Pam Gartner, Solen; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Jo, Mandan; one daughter, Cheryl Kautzman, Henderson, Nev.; two grandchildren, Kylie and Joshua; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Eileen, Wichita, Kan.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Julius Beehler, Mandan; Alvina and Ken Rohling, Wichita; and Kathleen and Jim Heisler, Bismarck; Pam's parents, Keith and Gertrude Svihovec, Eau Claire, Wis.; Pam's children, Crystal, Jason and Betty, Eau Claire; special friends, Karen and Mike Reidinger, Bismarck; Ken and Mary Schmidt, Solen; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was looking forward to the birth of his son's second child, which is due Oct. 8, 1997.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, James.

William Trueblood
GARRISON-- William E. Trueblood, 91, Garrison, died Oct. 1, 1997, in a Garrison nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison, with the Rev. Beth Hector officiating. Burial will follow in the Garrison Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Gary Trueblood, Tom Trueblood, Greg Berger, Kelly Trueblood and Eric Trueblood.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour prior to services.

William Trueblood was born August 12, 1906, in McLean County, the son of Milton and Pearl (Hopkins) Trueblood. He lived in both Colorado and Indiana for a short time before moving back to the Emmet area. On Sept. 29, 1928, he married Elvira Rodahl in Washburn. After their marriage they farmed south of Ryder until retiring in 1966. They lived on the farm until 1984 when they moved into Garrison. Elvira died May 10, 1995. William has been a resident of the Garrison Nursing Center since February 1992. He liked to visit with people and loved spending time with his grandchildren. William also liked to do whittling (woodcarving).

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Loren and Elsie, Myron and Pat, and Howard and Jean, all of Garrison, and Robert and Kathy, Walnut Cove, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law: Celeste and Tony Berger, Mandan; 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one grandchild; one brother and two sisters.

Katherine Kuntz
Katherine Kuntz, 92, 2425 Hillview Ave., passed away on Oct. 2, 1997. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Marcis officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and at 9 a.m. Monday at the Chapel at the Care Center.

Born on July 14, 1905, in Bismarck, Katherine was the daughter of Frank and Susie (Laubenstein) Kuntz. She attended elementary and high school at the School for the Deaf, Devils Lake. After graduation, Katherine worked at several jobs in various states before returning to North Dakota in 1944. At that time, she began work as a file clerk for the Department of Motor Vehicles. She continued in that position until her retirement in 1969.

Katherine lived independently until 1977, when she entered the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center where she continued in residence until her death.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and a sister. She is survived by her grandniece, Sheree Bye; many loving friends; and her special friends, Dolores Camp and Linda Robinson, both of Bismarck.

Earl Hagen
REEDER -- Earl G. Hagen, 75, Reeder, died Oct. 2, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Reeder, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Reeder.

He is survived by his wife, Zola; two sons, Bruce, Reeder, and Allen, Auburn, Wash.; one daughter, Connie Johnson, Park River; and one sister, Bernice Ehlers, Hettinger. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Anton Gardner
NAPOLEON-- Anton J. Gardner, 68, Napoleon, died Oct. 1, 1997, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Survivors include four sisters; Elizabeth Schwengler, Napoleon; Judy Tweeten, West Fargo; Eva Moore, Fargo; and Margaret Eberhardt, Jamestown.

Phyllis Smith
LINTON -- Phyllis Smith, 67, Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Linton, died Sept. 26, 1997, in her home of natural causes. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, with burial in Linton Cemetery.

She is survived by one brother, Darwin Dockter, Pengilly, Minn.

John McCarty
YORK-- John McCarty, 49, died Oct. 2, 1997, near Leeds from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Leeds Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

Arthur Witt
STEELE -- Arthur Witt, 78, Steele, died Oct. 3, 1997, in the Steele nursing home. Services will be at 10-30 a.m. Tuesday at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle. Burial will be in the Tuttle Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Flanders, Robinson, and Carolyn Kapp, Jamestown; three sisters, Lena Heimbrech and Esther Hertz, both of Bismarck, and Lydia Witt, Seattle, Wash. (Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown)

Theresa Weinberger
Theresa M. Weinberger, 84, 1810 Monte Drive, Mandan, died Oct. 3, 1997, in a Steele nursing home. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. today and a parish vigil at 7:30 tonight.

Theresa Weinberger was born Sept. 21, 1913, in Prelate, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was raised and educated in Canada for eight years before coming to the United States with her parents, Steven and Anna Mary (Kupper) Weinberger in 1923. Theresa has been a resident of Mandan since 1925.

She is survived by one sister, Florence Kuntz-Fitch, Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Ann Weinberger, Mandan; two brothers-in-law, Ed Serr, Elgin, and Joe Ferderer, Auburn, Wash., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, George; four sisters, Emma Serr, Evelyn Ferderer, Seraphina C. Weinberger and Margaret Weinberger.

Elsie Hilz
BEULAH -- Elsie Hilz, 86, Beulah, died Oct. 3, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Elsie is survived by two sisters, Alvina Kessler, Beulah, and Emma Richardson, Portland, Ore. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)

Victor Lutgen
GLEN ULLIN -- Victor John Lutgen, 79, Glen Ullin, died Oct. 3, 1997. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemtery, Mandan.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

John McCarty

Carol Hofer
TURTLE LAKE -- Carol Hofer, 56, Turtle Lake, died Oct. 3, 1997, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. Further arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.

Elizabeth Juergens
KNOB NOSTER, Mo. -- Elizabeth Juergens, 77, Knob Noster, Mo., died Oct. 3, 1997, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home, Knob Noster. Burial will be in the Knob Noster Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons: Kenneth Tuttle, Marshall, Mo., Robin Tuttle, Independence, Mo., and David Tuttle, Mandan; two daughters, Rowena Cruz and Linda Tuttle, both of Knob Noster; one brother, William Nicely, Liberty, Mo.; two sisters, Esther Speery, Lees Summit, Mo., and Ruther Foster, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.

John Lawlor
John Joseph Lawlor, 81, 1128 N. 28th St., died Oct. 1, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, where military rites will be provided by Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

John was born Nov. 12, 1915, in Devils Lake, the son of Thomas and Margaret (McCrae) Lawlor. His family lived in Carrington where John graduated from Carrington High School. He then attended mortuary school in St. Louis, Mo. John moved to Bismarck and worked for the Calnan Mortuary. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a pharmacists mate in the European Theater. While there he participated in the D-Day Invasion. John married Cleo Evans, July 16, 1945, in Bismarck. He worked as a deputy sheriff in Burleigh County and also served as bailiff with the Honorable Judge George Register in the Federal Court System. John worked at Melroe before returning to funeral service, when he began working at Perry Funeral Home, continuing with Eastgate Funeral Service. John was recently honored by the North Dakota Funeral Director Association for serving his community and profession for over 50 years.

He was also very involved in assisting at Marillac Manor. John wore many hats in life and one, in particular, of being kind and helpful to his family, friends, neighbors or anyone who could use a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife, Cleo; one son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Penney, San Diego, Calif.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary and George Dinyer, and Joan and Robert Nordstrom, all of Bismarck, and Nancy and David Snider, Littleton, Colo., and Diane, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Keir Roper, Todd Holdren, Christopher and Lindsey Lawlor, Laura and Garrett Dinyer, and Jill Snider; his twin sister, Mary Fedje, Portland; and one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Peggy, Union, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; one sister; and his daughter, Susan.

Christina Buchholz
TUTTLE -- Christina Buchholz, 89, Tuttle, died Oct. 4, 1997, at her home. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Carol Hofer
TURTLE LAKE -- Carol A. Hofer, 56, Turtle Lake, died Oct. 3, 1997, in the Turtle Lake hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Gary, Turtle Lake, and James, Dallas; two daughters, Bernadine Trehus, Bismarck, and Audrey Habersham, Dallas; one sister, Betty Huelsman, Turtle Lake; and two brothers, Dean Hallan, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Dale Hallan, Salt Lake City. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)

Victor Lutgen
GLEN ULLIN -- Victor John Lutgen, 79, Glen Ullin, died Oct. 3, 1997, in Glen Ullin. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin with the Revs. Claude Seeberger OSB and David Morman officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by Glen Ullin American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, at the church, where a wake service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. tonight.

Victor was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Glen Ullin, to John and Anna (Wehri) Lutgen. Victor was raised and educated in Glen Ullin. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corp when he was 16 years old. On June 3, 1942, he entered the United States Army and saw duty in England, North Africa, Corsica and France. Following his discharge, Oct. 12, 1945, he returned to North Dakota. He married Evelyn Kessler Nov. 15, 1945, in Glen Ullin. Following their marriage, they moved to Belfield, where he worked as a partsman for McGarvey and Schneider Garage. In 1947, he and Evelyn started their own business in Glen Ullin, a Mobil bulk agent and service station known as Vic's Friendly Service. In 1981, they sold their business and retired. They enjoyed wintering in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. and spending their summers in Glen Ullin.

Victor was a member of Lions, American Legion, Elks, V.F.W., Knights of Columbus and a lifetime member of North Dakota Fireman's Association, and past City Council member.

Victor is survived by his wife, Evelyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and seven sisters. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin)

Martha Jenner
TUTTLE -- Martha Jenner, 79, rural Tuttle, died Oct. 5, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.
