Clinton Carlson
Clinton Cornell Carlson, 69, 2001 Assumption Drive, died May 10, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck. The family will be at the funeral home to receive friends from 5-9 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

He was born Nov. 7, 1927, in Jud, the son of Robert and Violet (Gelensky) Carlson. He grew up and attended school in Edgeley. Clint enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1945-1948. After his discharge he helped his dad in the cattle business and then worked at the Fargo Freight Terminal in Fargo. In 1952 he started driving truck for Balsam and DeFrance, later named Northern Tank Line, a petroleum products transport carrier in Tioga. In 1953 he married Willa Jean Schonberger at Embden. Moving with the company they lived in Tioga, Williston, Fargo and Grand Forks. In 1960 they moved to Minot where Clint managed the Northern Tank Line Terminal. In 1968 the family moved to Bismarck, and Clint managed the terminal in Mandan. Later he worked for Dixon Brothers, retiring in 1992. In retirement he worked part-time for Froelich Oil Co.

Clint was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Mandan Elks and Amvets.

He is survived by his wife, Willa; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Rick Slavik, Bismarck; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert and Tammy, Bismarck, and David, Fargo; four grandchildren, Sarah Smith and Allison Slavik, and Hannah and Jackson Carlson; one sister, Joy Carlson, Moorhead, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Clint was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clayton; and one sister, Gloria.

The family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Hospice.

Lloyd Kolden
ROSEGLEN -- Lloyd Kolden, 81, Roseglen, died May 10, 1997, in the Garrison nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison. Further arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Del Maier
Del Maier, 67, Bismarck and Harlingen, Texas, founder of Del-Mar Vending, died May 11, 1997, at his home in Texas. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Robert Zenz
MAX -- Robert Zenz, 52, Max, died May 10, 1997, in the Garrison hospital. Arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Myrtle Skager
Myrtle Skager, 87, Bismarck, formerly of Center and Stanton, died May 12, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Stanton, with the Rev. Jay Spoonheim officiating. Burial will be in Deapolis Cemetery, rural Stanton.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Myrtle Iverson was born Sept. 15, 1909, near Parkers Prairie, Minn., the daughter of Iver and Martha (Bunes) Iverson. She was raised on a farm near Parkers Prairie and attended Elmo Township School No. 99. She came to North Dakota in 1932 and married Otto T. Skager, Oct. 22, 1933. They farmed and ranched south of Fort Clark until Otto died Aug. 24, 1980. Myrtle moved to Center in the fall of 1992, and then lived in Stanton before she moved to Bismarck in 1994.

She was a 4-H leader in Oliver County for many years and was active in the Senior Citizens Clubs in Stanton and Center. Myrtle loved life on the farm and anything associated with it, particularly tending to a garden. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and quilting.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Donness and Marvin Dietz, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Phyllis, and Warren and Connie, all of Center; eight grandchildren, Jason Skater, Grand Forks, Chad Skager, Center, Matthew Skager, Whidbey Island, Wash., Carmen Skager, Fargo, Jeffrey Dietz and his wife, Joan, and Susan Dietz, all of Mandan, Tom Dietz, St. Louis Park, Minn., Sandra Kostelecky and her husband, Scott, Watauga, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Megan, Cameron and Kara Dietz; one brother and sister-in-law, Ervin and Phyllis Iverson, Parkers Prairie; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Tena and Marvin Clark, Siquim, Wash., Elma and Jute Clausen, Owatonna, Minn., Edna Tidwell, Roland, Okla., and Lorraine and Melvin Hollatz, Parkers Prairie; and special friends, Ethel Matzke, Center, and Madeline Schow, Stanton.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her brother, Ira Iverson; and two sisters, Norma Beaman and Evelyn Westad.

Magdalena Kirschenmann
STREETER -- Magdalena Kirschenmann, 86, Streeter, died May 12, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Saturday at Hope United Church of Christ, Streeter, with the Rev. Scott Curfman officiating. Burial will be in Zion Reformed Cemetery, west of Streeter.

Magdalena Kirschenmann was born Nov. 6, 1910, on the family farm southwest of Streeter, the daughter of John and Magdalena (Graf) Kirschenmann. She attended the local rural school where she received her elementary education and later graduated from Steele High School. She also attended Ellendale State College for two years. She taught at country schools for many years until moving to Bismarck in 1944, where she worked for the State of North Dakota. She returned to Streeter in 1951 to be with her mother. In 1957 she moved back to Bismarck and was co-manager of the Capitol Building Lunch Room. She retired in 1983 and continued to live in Bismarck until 1995 when she moved to Streeter.

She was a member of Hope United Church of Christ in Streeter, and also was assistant stenographer for the Streeter Jubilee.

She is survived by three sisters and one brother-in-law, Lena Spitzer, Bertha and Philip Dewald, and Christina Graf, all of Streeter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; three brothers; and one infant sister. (Haut Funeral Home, Gackle)

Thea Kallock
MADDOCK -- Thea Kallock, 92, Maddock, died May 12, 1997, in the New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock, with burial in Antelope Valley Lutheran Cemetery, Oberon.

She is survived by two sons, Ellsworth Benson, Sheyenne, and Allyn Kallock, East Grand Forks, Minn.; and one daughter, Vi Sorenson, Riverside, Calif.

Torolf Stensrud
Torolf Stensrud, 78, Bismarck, died May 11, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

He is survived by one son, Mike, Mandan. (West Funeral Home, West Fargo)

Mary Kappel
DICKINSON -- Mary Kappel, 103, Dickinson, died May 13, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Olaf Viig
WILLISTON -- Olaf Viig, 76, Williston, died May 9, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Frank Meduna
DICKINSON -- Frank Meduna, 84, Minot, died May 13, 1997, in a Minot care center. Arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Rose Thompson
Rose Thompson, 61, 705 Boundary Road, Mandan, died May 12, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Christ the King Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Al Leary officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Rose was born Oct. 21, 1935, in Rugby, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (Gerger) Massine. She was raised and educated in the Balta area, graduating from Balta High School. She went on to nurses training at Mercy School of Nursing in Valley City. On June 3, 1957, she married Maurice Thompson in Balta. Rose was employed as a registered nurse at Mandan Hospital from 1968 to 1977. She also worked at Mid Dakota Clinic in Bismarck for 20 years.

Rose was an active member of Mandan AAU Track Program, MAR Club, and was an active supporter of Mandan Swimming and Diving Program.

She is survived by two sons, Paul, Mandan, and Patrick and his friend Theresa Carlson, Eldorado, Kan.; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Brett Flaherty, Queensbury, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Michael Thompson, and Nicole and Kaitlin Flaherty; three brothers, Thomas, Jamestown, Michael, Minot, and LeeRoy, Oakley, Calif.; five sisters, Florence Vetsch, Rugby, Anna Schneibel, Harvey, Catherine Gaudet, Amesbury, Md., Kunigunda Koble, Balta, and Sister Mary Gertrude, Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Maurice, who died in 1996.

The family prefers memorials to Ruth Meiers Hospitality House and North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Maxine Freidt
WATFORD CITY -- Maxine Freidt, 68, Watford City, died May 12, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grassy Butte Community Hall.

Maxine Egbert was born Feb. 6, 1929, in the Grassy Butte area, the daughter of Paul and Agnes (Christenson) Egbert. She was raised and educated in the Grassy Butte area. She married Frank J. Freidt in 1950. After her marriage she lived in Watford City. She worked as an assistant manager for the Watford City Legion Club for 10 years. She enjoyed the outdoors, and had a great love for animals, especially dogs and horses.

She is survived by her husband, Frank, Watford City; one son and daughter-in-law, Preston and Amiee, Gillette; one daughter, Vici Murphy, Hillsboro, Kan.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her mother, Agnes Murray, Dallas (formerly of Grassy Butte); and two sisters, Donna Crist, Grassy Butte, and Gayle Asbjornson, Dallas.

The family prefers memorials to the Humane Society in the Dickinson area.

Josephine Wuitschick
Josephine Wuitschick, 79, 1002 Tower Place, Mandan, formerly of Selfridge, died May 12, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon MDT Thursday at St. Philomena Church, Selfridge, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church beginning one hour before services.

Josephine Hartman was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Grant County. She was the daughter of Fabian and Rose (Harsche) Hartman. She attended country school in Grant County. She married Lazerus Wuitschick, Nov. 28, 1936, in Bismarck. She worked for Smestad Super Valu and John's Super Valu in Selfridge as a clerk for 25 years. Josephine moved to Mandan in April 1991.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Kay and Arthur R. Walker, McLaughlin, S.D., and Florence and Leonard Leingang, Mandan; one granddaughter; two brothers, John, Mobridge, S.D., and Ben, Mandan; and one sister, Gertrude Kahl, Mandan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lazerus, who died April 22, 1981; and one brother, Whitey.

Frank Wenstrom
WILLISTON -- Frank A. Wenstrom, 93, North Dakota Lieutenant Governor in 1963 and 1964, a popular and well-known Williston businessman, died May 12, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston, with the Rev. Jean McCusker officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston, with a time of fellowship following in Mr. Wenstrom's Church, First Union Church.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston, where a Masonic service will begin at 7 tonight.

Frank A. Wenstrom was born July 27, 1903, in Dover, Wells County, to James A. and Annie (Kringstad) Wenstrom. he was raised there and attended rural grade school in the Bilodeau School District in Wells County. He graduated from Carrington High School and began his career in the retail oil business. On June 10, 1938, he was married to Mary Esther Pickett in Carrington. They moved to Williston to establish their home, which has remained their home through these many succeeding years. Mr. Wenstrom was in the retail oil business in Williston from 1938-1943. He managed the Williston Chamber of Commerce from 1945-1951, and was public relations officer at First National Bank in Williston from 1951-1953. He served as managing officer of real estate mortgage development at First National Bank in Williston from 1953-1960, and executive officer of Northwestern Federal Savings and Loan Association of Williston from 1964-1968. He was then a special consultant to American State Bank of Williston from 1968-1973.

He served as Lieutenant Governor of North Dakota in 1963 and 1964. He was a former state senator, an elected delegate to North Dakota's second Constitutional Convention, election of 1970, and was elected president by the 97 delegates to North Dakota's Constitutional Convention in 1971 and 1972. He was a member of the board of directors of the University Foundation from 1965 to the present. He was honored by the creation of the Frank A. Wenstrom Library for Student Research of State Government by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Governmental Affairs, 1984, located in Gamble Hall, UND, Grand Forks. He received the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from UND on May 13, 1990, and was the first recipient of the Upper Missouri Bar Association Distinguished Service Award for a non-lawyer in May 1991. That plaque hangs in the Williams County Courthouse.

He was a member of First Union Church, Salvation Army Board of Advisers, the Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, Red Cross of Constantine, Kem Temple and the Elks Lodge. He was made honorary grand master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of North Dakota at Grand Forks in June 1992.

Frank enjoyed people, hunting, fishing, woodworking, politics and visiting with people when campaigning.

Mr. Wenstrom is survived by his wife, Esther; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Richard Frank
FLASHER -- Richard Frank, 64, Flasher, died May 11, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services wil be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Flasher, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon CDT today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue from 1 to 9 p.m. MDT today at the church, where a parish vigil will be said at 7:30 tonight.

L. Richard Frank was born Aug. 26, 1932, in the Flasher hospital, the son of John and Eleanora (Pfau) Frank. He attended school in Raleigh and Flasher, and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1950. He married Mary "Mae" K. Mahrer, Oct. 20, 1950. Richard took over the family farm and ranch. He and his sons and their families still operate Frank's 4U Ranch of Shields.

He is survived and missed by his wife, Mae; four sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Diane, David and his special friend, Sue Lemke, and Dan and Kim, and Dean and Dayna; two daughters, Donell and Jim Timpe, Donna and Gary Berchulski; his grandchildren, Darrick, Dustin, Devin, Josh, Justin, Shannon, Jace, Bryce, Dayla and Damon; four sisters, Rose Frank, Angie Mahrer, Tillie Tischmack and Bertha Schmidt; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Sharon; and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ralph; and one grandson, Darron Frank.

Richard had a passion for many things in life, friends, the open range and fields, fresh air and cattle. His greatest passion was his wife and family. He left us while on the open range pulling a calf.

Kristin Schaeffer
HETTINGER -- Kristin Schaeffer, 31, Hettinger, died May 11, 1997, in Hettinger. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. MDT Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with burial in Graceland Cemetery, New Salem.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Kristin Fahrni was born Sept. 21, 1965, in Bismarck, the daughter of Dr. Lowell and Corrin (Helbig) Fahrni. She was raised and educated at Glen Ullin, and graduated in 1983. She attended college at North Dakota State University, Eastern Montana State at Billings, Mont., Montana State College at Bozeman, and Medcenter One College of Nursing. She was recently working toward a nurse practitioner degree at the University of Mary. She has worked at Marian Manor Nursing Home in Glen Ullin, a nursing home in Billings, and Medcenter One in Bismarck. She married Stacey Schaeffer, June 24, 1995, in Bismarck. They moved to Hettinger where she was employed at Hillcrest Care Center.

Kristen was a very caring wife, mother, daughter and nurse.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hettinger, North Dakota Nurses Association, and had been a member of 4-H.

She is survived by her husband, Stacey; one infant daughter, Kiah Corrin; her parents, Dr. Lowell and Corrin Fahrni, Glen Ullin; one brother, Bradley, Coon Rapids, Minn.; her father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Schaeffer, Eureka, S.D.; one brother-in-law, Shannon, Aberdeen, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Jessica Schaeffer, Eureka; and a special nephew, Sean Fahrni, New Hope, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Nora and Carl Helbig.
