Jess Hlavacek
Jess W. Hlavacek, 70, 1111 N. First St., died May 15, 1997, in his home after a long illness. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Lane, S.D.

Visitation will begin at the funeral home one hour before services.

Jess was born Nov. 25, 1926, in the Watertown area, the son of Lewis and Alma Hlavacek. He was raised and educated in the Watertown area. Jess joined the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines. He farmed in South Dakota until moving to Bismarck in 1974, where he worked as an insurance salesman, retiring in 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Erna; one sister, Betty Elpers, Denver; four sons, Harold, Harley, Dwayne and Darwin, all of Watertown, S.D. area; two stepsons, Lester Lang, Chicago, and Dale Lang, Post Falls, Idaho; two stepdaughters, Carol Demlo, Alamosa, Calif., and Verna Wirtz, Bismarck; several grandchildren; and stepgrandchildren.

Harold Haaland
MINOT -- Harold Haaland, 89, Minot, formerly of Carpio, died May 15, 1997, in a Minot healthcare facility. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Monday at Carpio Lutheran Church. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Carpio.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.

Harold was born April 7, 1908, in Mayland Township, Ward County, the son of John and Elisa Haaland. He was raised and attended country school near Carpio. While he was young, he worked for many farmers in the area and started farming on his own in 1929. He also worked in the coal mines around Carpio, the sugar beet fields in Montana and the apple orchards in Washington.

In 1942, he purchased his parents homestead. He married Emily Tudahl March 5, 1942, at Berthold Lutheran Church. They moved to the farm that was to be their home for 50 years, west of Carpio in Carpio Township, Ward County. In 1992, the Haalands moved to Minot. In April of 1997, they moved to Edgewood Vista in Minot.

He was a member, trustee and on the building committee of Carpio Lutheran Church. He served on the Carpio Township Board for 30 years. He was also active in the building of the Carpio Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Minot. In Harold's retirement years, he enjoyed planting trees, woodworking, traveling and a regular game of pool.

He is survived by his wife, Emily; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Elsie and Peter Madsen, Arvada, Colo., Clarice Johnson and Harriet and Richard Klark, all of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Wanda Gier, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Scot Quick and his wife, Laura, Denise Johnson and Mickey, Rebecca Morgan, David Johnson, Jennifer Cody and her husband, Tim, Terri Gier and Scott Gier and his wife, Kathy; 10 great-grandchildren, Cameron and Elisa Quick, Brittany, Adrian and Jordan Johnson, Michael and Kylie Morgan, Jarod and Jacob Cody and Brianna Gier; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Christine, Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ruth Bueide, Willmar, Minn., and Elma and Elmer Frykman, Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers.

Harold Robinson
GARRISON -- Harold R. Robinson, 74, Garrison and Rancho Mirage, Calif., died May 13, 1997, in a Rancho Mirage medical center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post No. 49.

Active pallbearers are Steve, Bucky, Jim and Hugh Robinson, and Dr. Eric and Dr. David Uthus. Honorary pallbearers will be J.P. and Dave Robinson, Don Gackle, Wayne Stroup, Jack Hovein, Rod Romine, Duane Rasch and Harold Piper.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Harold was born Aug. 17, 1922, at Garrison, to William and Anna (Bale) Robinson. He was raised in Garrison. He graduated from West High School in Minneapolis, and attended the University of California prior to entering the U.S. Navy. He served in the Navy during World War II and following his discharge he returned to Garrison where he farmed for many years and spent the winter months in Rancho Mirage. He married Margaret Uthus Feb. 5, 1965, in Fargo.

He was a member of the Minot Elks, American Legion Post at Garrison, an honorary member of the Garrison Fire Department, a member of the Masonic Lodge and Shriner, the Eastern Star, Dickinson Country Club, and the Minot and Garrison Golf Clubs. He was a member of the Desert Island Country Club and won the Presidents Cup. He was a longtime member of the Garrison School Board and served as president of the board for 16 years. He was a member of the North Dakota Golf Hall of Fame, the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Society, the Historical Society of Garrison, SACA, Fort Steven's Historical Society, Board of Regents of Minot State University, President's Circle College of the Desert, life member of Eisenhower Medical Center Auxiliary, member of Concordia College C-400, and the Fort Stevenson Foundation of Garrison.

He is survived by his wife and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to the donors favorite charity.

Emma Freier
GARRISON -- Emma Freier, 90, Garrison, died May 16, 1997, in the Garrison nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garrison Nursing Center Chapel, with burial in Garrison Cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Louise Neumiller, Carrington. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Richard Helbling
Richard John Helbling, 59, Poway, Calif., died May 5, 1997, at his home of a massive heart attack.

Richard was born Jan. 5, 1938, in Mandan, N.D., to Valentine and Constantina (Braun) Helbling. He was a graduate of Mandan High School and University of North Dakota.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; one son, Timothy, Escondido, Calif.; two daughters, Teresa, Redlands, Calif., and Brenda Seck, Victorville, Calif.; one grandson, Cameron Seck; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Dorothy Helbling Wagner, Billings, Mont., Elaine and Jim Hundley, Rochester, Ill., and Donna and Bill Anderst, Manitowoc, Wis.; one sister-in-law, Betty Helbling, Mandan.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elmer Shell Track Sr.
Elmer Shell Track Sr., 67, New Town, died May 14, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Episcopal Church, Cannon Ball. Burial will be in St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Elmer Shell Track was born Oct. 7, 1929 in Cannon Ball, to Charles and Helen (Bull Bear) Shell Track. He was raised and educated in the Cannon Ball and Solen area. He enlisted in 1951 and served three years in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954 with a National Defense Service Medal.

Elmer loved rodeos and was a national saddle bronc champion. He won many trophies riding saddle broncs. He was the first Head Start bus driver in the Cannon Ball area. For most of his life, he was a construction worker throughout North Dakota, and was employed with the Fort Totten Police Department in the 1970s.

He is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Shell Track, Cannon Ball, and Patricia Shell Track, Bismarck; one son, Elmer Shell Track Jr., Little Eagle, S.D.; one adopted sister, Adeline LaPointe, Mission, S.D.; and many adopted relatives throughout the United States and Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; and three brothers. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Yvonne Barney
FARGO -- Yvonne R. Barney, 63, Fargo, died May 15, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral, Fargo. Burial will be in Naytahwaush, Minn.

She is survived by one son, Shawn, Bismarck; her mother, Esther Horne, Wahpeton; and one sister, Dianne Kjelbertson, Naytahwaush, Minn. (Ivers-Landblom Funeral Home, Fargo)

Carol Oldenburg
VALLEY CITY -- Carol Oldenburg, 64, Valley City, formerly of Hebron, died May 16, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Valley City. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hebron.

She is survived by one son, Dolf, Grafton; one daughter, Kit Burden, Riverton, Wyo.; her mother, Hedwig Spoer, Glen Ullin; and three sisters, Grace Martin, Billings, Mont., Dora Jaeger, Bismarck, and Sharon Moran, Superior, Mont. (Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City)

Jayne Shock
BELFIELD -- Jayne Shock, 38, Belfield, died May 15, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Ray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Don; her parents, Cecil and June Hamers, Dickinson; one brother, Paul Hamers, Fort Bragg, N.C.; and one sister, Kelly Ihde, Sidney, Mont. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Rosie Gries
GOODRICH -- Rosie Gries, 100, Goodrich, died April 29, 1997, at her daughter's home in Bismarck. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich, with burial in Goodrich Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Rosie was born May 2, 1896, near Eureka, S.D., to John and Barbara (Staebler) Moser. The family moved to Idaho and to Washington, before settling near Goodrich. She grew up and attended school at Goodrich. She received a teaching certificate from Valley City State College and taught in rural schools in South Dakota and North Dakota. She was married to Gustav Gries, May 23, 1922, at Eau Claire, Wis. They lived in Goodrich. She began working as an Avon representative in February 1938. Mr. Gries died Dec. 3, 1966. She continued being an Avon representative through 1996. This past January she became ill and had been recuperating with her daughter in Bismarck.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. She depended upon her faith in God to guide her through many of life's difficulties. She was an inspiration for many people.

She is survived by one son, Helmuth, Bismarck; one daughter, Meta Maynard, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Judy Kostuck, Marcia Opp, Miriam Vizuete and Kim Maynard; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Adelbert; one grandson, Steve Opp; three brothers and three sisters.

Harvey Monson
ALEXANDER -- Harvey Owen Monson, 87, Alexander, died April 27, 1997. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, Alexander, with burial in Alexander Cemetery.

He is survived by two sons, Greg and Jerry, both of Williston; seven daughters, Diane Hayden, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Colleen Gebhard, Danbury, Conn., Maureen Torborg, White Bear Lake, Minn., Rita Richter, Sioux Falls, S.D., Elaine Pereira, Houston, Kathleen Fain, Spring, Texas, and Patricia Schmidt, Moscow, Idaho; four brothers, Chet, Alexander, Bill, Minot, Roy, Williston, and John, Sioux Falls; and three sisters, Olive Ohm, Williston, Wilma Monson, Watford City, and Helen Gifford, San Diego. Robert Fandrick
TURTLE LAKE -- Robert Dale Fandrick, 57, California, died April 3, 1997, in California. Memorial services were April 19 in Westminster, Calif., with burial in Turtle Lake Cemetery.

He is survived by one brother, Elmer, Dunseith; and two sisters, Marian Braun, Turtle Lake, and Ann Marie Keck, Fallbrook, Calif.

Myrna Bossert
MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Myrna J. Bossert, 54, Moorhead, died April 28, 1997, in Fargo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Horace Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Wilma Van Dam
JAMESTOWN -- Wilma J. Van Dam, 64, Jamestown, died April 30, 1997, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Albert Schmallinger
MEDINA -- Albert Schmallinger, 80, Medina, died Jan. 6, 1997, in Bismarck. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Medina. Further arrangements are pending at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Eva Dawson
ALMONT -- Eva A. Dawson, 79, Almont, died April 30, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Emil Ellwein
Emil Ellwein, 75, Mandan, died May 18, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending.

Steven Raby
Steven Nicholas Raby, 12, Arlington, Texas, died April 5, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

He is survived by his parents, LaVonne Fisher, Arlington, and Scott Raby, Baltimore; his grandparents, Arnold and Regina Fisher, Flasher, and Eugene and Elaine Raby, Homosassa, Fla.; one brother, Jeremy Raby, Arlington.

Wilson Laird
Wilson M. Laird, 82, Kerrville, Texas, died May 14, 1997. Memorial services will be held in Grand Forks at a later date.

He is survived by three sons, Douglas, Urbandale, Iowa, David, North Potomac, Md., and Donald, Columbia, Mo.; and one daughter, Dorothy Kaatz, Wadena, Minn. (Grimes Funeral Chapel, Kerrville)

Flora Weinhandl, 94, 306 15th St. N.W., Mandan, died May 19, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Mary Nelsen
LEEDS -- Mary E. Nelsen, 64, Leeds, died May 19, 1997, in her home. Arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

Mary Skoglund
Mary Louise Skoglund, 50, St. Vincent's Care Center, died May 18, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. James Cissell officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. today at St. Vincent's Care Center. Visitation will continue from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Louise Morris was born Aug. 9, 1946, in Bismarck, the daughter of Robert R. and Lenora L. (Kaldun) Morris. She was raised and attended school in Bismarck. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1965. Mary married Raymond Skoglund, Sept. 17, 1966. She enjoyed farming and providing care for young children.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Naomi and Alice Skoglund, both of Bismarck; one granddaughter, Nicole Becker, Bismarck; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Roberta and Robert Brown, Bismarck, Carol and Ray Schuss, Longview, Wash., and Becky and Dave Schaff, Belfield, and Marie Dehn, Sacramento, Calif.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Heidi; and one son, Russell.
