Mildred Vasichek
Mildred Lucille Vasichek, 84, Great Falls, Mont., died May 15, 1997, in a Great Falls hospital of an apparent heart attack. A memorial service was held Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, Great Falls. Cremation has taken place.

Mildred was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Roseglen, the daughter of Hans and Julia (Gilbertson) Lunden. She attended school in North Dakota and graduated from Minot State Teachers College. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Roseglen. She later attended College of Great Falls, earning her bachelor's degree in education and later a master's degree in special education from San Francisco State College. She taught at Montana School for the Deaf and Blind for 17 years. She married Edward Vasichek in 1940 in Minot.

She was a member of Retired Teachers Association, Faith Lutheran Church in Great Falls, Faith Lutheran Ladies Circle, AAUW, and was a volunteer at Zion School in Great Falls.

She enjoyed knitting, camping at Seeley Lake, fishing, winters in Mesa, Ariz., three dimensional tole or paper art and rug hooking.

She is survived by her husband, Edward; two daughters, Susan Blackwell, Great Falls, and Judy McCraney, Seattle; one son, Daryl, Great Falls; one sister, Gladys Van Vleet, Bismarck; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. (Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, Great Falls)

Raymond Dwarf
FORT YATES -- Raymond Dwarf Jr., 38, Fort Yates, died May 18, 1997, in the Fort Yates hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Fort Yates, with the Rev. John Floberg officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery, rural Fort Yates, with military rites by Albert Grass Post No. 173.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Raymond was born Aug. 19, 1958, at Fort Yates, the son of Raymond and Gloria (Zahn) Dwarf Sr. He was raised and educated in the Fort Yates area. After graduating from high school, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Army serving from 1976 to 1979. He lived in Rapid City, S.D. for 10 years, working in the meat packing plant. He then moved to Dallas, where he had been working in construction for the last two years.

He is survived by one son, Raymond Linn Dwarf, Sioux Falls, S.D.; his parents, Raymond Sr. and Gloria, Fort Yates; seven brothers and three sisters-in-law, Kenneth L. and Roberta, Curtis L., Daryl F., Terrance E., Daniel, and Stephan and Deborah, all of Fort Yates, and Ron C. and Becky, Browning, Mont.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Karen and Ben Mauai, and Pamela and Stan Hertal, all of Fort Yates; a special friend, Victoria Stands, Sioux Falls; 11 nephews; eight nieces; and one grand niece.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald.

Alice Frankl
Alice E. Frankl, 80, Mandan, died May 19, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Alice E. was born April 9, 1917, in Mandan, the daughter of Joseph D. and Ellen (Johnson) Simons. She was raised and educated in Mandan, and graduated from Mandan High School. She married Floyd L. Frankl, March 19, 1937, in Mandan. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary, loved to crochet and was an astute bridge player.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd; one son and daughter-in-law, Lyle and Lois, Dickinson; one daughter, Judy Thompson, Marietta, Ohio; three granddaughters, Dawn Stroh and her husband, Mike, Killdeer, Shannon Steier and her husband, Bruce, Dickinson, and Megan Frankl, Dickinson; an honorary granddaughter, Dawn (Haupt) Ressler and her husband, Richard, McVille; two great-grandchildren, Lucas Stroh and Madison Alice Steier; one sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and George Briese, Bismarck; one special niece, Joann Kitzmann, Hannover; and special friends of more than 50 years, Mildred Ramsdell, Bismarck, and the original members of her bridge club, Mary Niemann, Bismarck, and Virginia Helt, Eloise Backsen, Emma Haider and Emily Upham, all of Mandan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Kenneth, Chester and Donald Simons; and her son-in-law, Joseph Thompson.

Emma Bon
STEELE -- Emma Lou Bon, 67, Steele, died of cancer, May 18, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Emma Lou was born Dec. 14, 1929, at Pingree, the daughter of William and Helen (Schroeder) Dietsch. She received her early schooling in Roundup township and graduated from Pingree High School in 1949. She attended college at Valley City and taught school for two years near Buchanan, one year at Hamberg, and one year at Alice. She married Fred Bon, June 13, 1954, at Pingree. They farmed near Robinson, where Emma Lou was an active member of WELCA, PTA, and as a 4-H leader. They moved to Steele in 1989.

She is survived by her husband, Fred; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas, Fargo, and Charles and Jean, Robinson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nicolet and Earl Darling, Johnstown, Colo., and Carolyn and Ben Koski, Wausau, Wis.; five grandchildren, Adam and Shannon Darling, and Laura, Matthew and Michael Bon; one brother, Bill, Pingree; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen and W. Dennis Oberlander, Billings, Mont., and Myrtle and Otto Schulz, Jamestown.

The family prefers memorials to Golden Manor Care Center, Steele.

David Anderson
David Allen Anderson, 44, Mandan, was called home May 18, 1997. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene, Mandan, with the Rev. Dave Baker officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home.

David was born March 15, 1953, in Bismarck, the son of Jim and Charlotte (Gruenberg) Anderson. He attended Bismarck schools. In 1975, he married Priscilla Basaraba. Out of that union he had one son and one daughter. Dave worked for Donald Lang, ICI, Dynamic Homes and Wills Sunflower Seeds. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1985.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, drawing, leathercrafts, his pets, yard work and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his two children, Holly and Danny, both of Mandan; two grandchildren, Sky and Hannah; his parents, Jim and Charlotte Anderson, Bismarck; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Gloria and Ed Newton, Tuttle, Robin Brousseau, Bismarck, Carol and Ron Bosch, and Lisa and Jeff Hawkenson, all of Mandan, and Sue and Gordy Granlie, Wilton; one brother and sister-in-law, James Jr. and Bonnie, Bismarck; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; and many special people including, the Rev. Dave Baker, Dr. Terry Johnson, Daryl Brousseau, Greg, HMR, and Medcenter One staff, Amy and Arianna Nygard, Season and Taylor Pudwill, and too many others to mention.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Simon; two nephews; his grandparents; and his longtime companion, his dog, Dummy; and cat, Smokey.

Eugene Klein
DICKINSON -- Eugene Klein, 57, Dickinson, died May 19, 1997, in the Carrington hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Cindy Auen, Bismarck, Laurel Call, Dickinson, and Karen Villa, Novi, Mich.; three sons, Gene, Cheyenne, Wyo., Brad, Belfield, and Stewart, Ramona, Calif.; his mother, Catherine Klein, Bismarck; and two brothers, Paul, Dickinson, and Dennis, Mandan. Marcella Myhre
LEMMON, S.D. -- Marcella M. Myhre, 79, Lemmon, died May 19, 1997, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Lemmon, with burial in Greenhill Cemetery, Lemmon.

She is survived by four sons, Max, Lemmon, Cleo, St. Paul, Minn., Earl, LaCrescent, Minn., and Irl, Anchorage, Alaska; and four sisters, Elzira Bentz, Elgin, Margaret Lenske, Waukesha, Wis., Frances Brackel, Dickinson, and Ione Kinney, Kennewick, Wash. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

Margaret Stephens
Margaret Stephens, 84, Redding, Calif., formerly of St. Anthony, died April 26, 1997, in Redding. Services were held April 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Red Bluff, Calif., with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Red Bluff.

She is survived by two daughters, Maxine McKitrick, Southgate, Mich., and Donna Goodman, Red Bluff; one son, Richard, Reno, Nev.; and one sister, Clem White, Seattle.

Doris Sveen
WILLISTON -- Doris E. Sveen, 76, Williston, died at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Tioga, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Viola Gretler, Tacoma, Wash. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Mary Nelsen
LEEDS -- Mary E. Nelsen, 64, Leeds, died May 19, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Leeds Lutheran Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Snyder, Arvilla; one son, Scott, Leeds; and four sisters, Geraldine Johnson, Swanee, Fla., Betty Simpson, Columbus, Ga., Patricia Sattler, Rugby, and Gail Selland, Leeds. (Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds)

Ray Meyer
DICKINSON -- Ray Meyer, 74, Dickinson, died May 20, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Naomi Gustafson
FARIBAULT, Minn. -- Naomi S. Gustafson, 37, Faribault, formerly of Halliday, died May 19, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Faribault, with burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault.

She is survived by her husband, Stanley; two children, Jared and Jessica, both at home; her mother, Irene Walth, Dickinson; two brothers, David Walth, Halliday, and the Rev. James Walth, Deerwood, Minn.; and two sisters, Dorothy Giest, Hazen, and Ruth Ann Kibler, Fargo. (Boldt Funeral Home, Faribault)

Donald Hagen
NEW TOWN -- Donald Hagen, 72, Grafton, formerly of New Town, died May 18, 1997, at Bottineau. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town, with burial in Oak Creek Cemetery, Bottineau.

He is survived by his wife, May; two sons, Lonny and Jack, both of New Town; three daughters, Luanna McLean, San Ramon, Calif., Janine Morgan, Minot, and Bonnie Hagen, Grafton; one brother, John, Bottineau; and one sister, Muriel Wagner, Bottineau. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

Abner Haro
GACKLE -- Abner Haro, 88, Gackle, died May 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Emmanual Lutheran Church, Gackle, with the Rev. David Winterfeldt officiating. Burial will be in Old Apostolic Cemetery, south of Gackle.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Haut Funeral Home, Gackle.

Abner was born Feb. 12, 1909, on the family farm 13 miles southwest of Gackle. He was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Sippanen) Haro. He attended the local rural school where he received his elementary education and grew to manhood. He and Edna Ollila were married June 17, 1929, in Napoleon. They made their home on the farm where he farmed from 1926 until 1959. Then he sold the farm and moved to Minneapolis where he did construction work. In 1960 he moved back to Gackle where he worked for Remboldt Implement. He later worked constructing the addition of the Remboldt Locker Plant. He also drove school bus from 1960 until 1968. Then he started his own welding shop in Gackle, he continued to do shop work part time until 1997.

He was a member of Old Apostolic Church, south of Gackle. He served as president of the school board in the Nathan School District. When he wasn't busy he enjoyed travel and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Edna; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Evelyn and Walter Johnson, Aurora, Minn., Nina Haro, Gackle, and Ruth and James Doll, Glen Ullin; four grandchildren, Justin Anderson, Sacramento, Calif., Jessica and Jacqualynn Doll, Glen Ullin, and Ann Wuollet, Vista, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; and three sisters.

Frieda Berquist
Frieda Berquist, 76, 2003 N. 16th St., died May 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Cissell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Frieda was born March 4, 1921, at Streeter, the daughter of John and Magdelena (Stregger) Deg. She was raised and educated in rural Streeter. She moved with her family to Hebron in 1937. As a young woman she moved to Minneapolis and worked as a waitress. She met Paul Berquist there and they were married July 3, 1945, in Minneapolis. Paul was in the Air Force and they lived in various states including Texas and North Dakota. He retired in 1962 at Grand Forks Air Base and they moved to Bismarck. She sold Avon products for the last seven years.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; two half-sisters, Annetta Wills, Pendelton, Ore., and Martha Ellis, Minneapolis; one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Norma Deg, Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews.

Flora Weinhandl
Flora O. Weinhandl, 94, 306 15th St. N.W., Mandan, died May 19, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Dennis Fornier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. today.

Flora was born Sept. 28, 1902, in Sulz, Russia, the daughter of Thomas and Blandina (Hopfauf) Stebner. In 1907 Flora came to the United States with her parents. She was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1921. She continued her education at Collegiate Business Institute in Minneapolis, and graduated in 1926. In October 1945, Flora married Rudie Weinhandl in Mandan. Flora was employed with Mandan Creamery (now Cloverdale) for 46 years as a bookkeeper. She continued to do bookkeeping for various Mandan businesses.

She enjoyed gardening and she and her husband won trophies for gladiolus and iris. She was also interested in wood carving and china painting.

She was a member of Bismarck-Mandan China Painting Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Catholic Order of Foresters, Zonta Club, Germans from Russia, and Bismarck-Mandan Garden Club. She was a sponsor of the Mandan Art Association and co-owner of Men's Mart and Marianne's in Mandan.

She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Fern Stebner, Salem, Ore.; one sister and brother-in-law, Marianne and Richard Baron, Mandan; four nieces, Carol Squire, Linda Ahlers, Nannette Baron and Peggy Zemo; and five nephews, Robert and Richard Stebner, William and Wayne Baron and Thomas Stebner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, Rudie, who died in 1982; and two brothers, John and Chris.

Emil Ellwein
Emil Ellwein, 75, Mandan, died May 18, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Brad Stoltenow officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Emil was born Dec. 10, 1921, on a farm northeast of Krem, the son of William and Emilia (Kempf) Ellwein. He attended rural schools and worked on the family farm until entering the U.S. Army in 1942. After his discharge in 1946 he began working in the construction industry. He worked on the building of the Garrison Dam and later was employed by Chase Construction of Bismarck until his retirement.

He is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Edna, Bismarck, Erhardt and Ida, Minot, and Reuben and Ruth, Hazen; one sister, Martha Fiergola, Beulah; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Elsie Draggoo, Emma Ellwein, Selma Jarvis and Lydia Neuberger; and one brother, Herbert.

Alpha Dumire
Alpha M. Dumire, 83, Marillac Manor, died May 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Ronald McDonald House.
