WASHBURN -- Otto Wagner, 74, Washburn, died May 3, 1997, at his home of natural causes. Arrangements are pending with Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.

Richard Burdick
MADDOCK -- Richard M. Burdick, 74, rural Maddock, died May 2, 1997, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Brethren Church, Maddock. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Anna Carroll
DICKINSON -- Anna Marie Carroll, 92, Dickinson, died May 2, 1997, at Jackson, Miss. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dickinson.

She is survived by four daughters, Rita Weber, Casselton, Patricia Carroll, Fargo, Sister Clarice Carroll, Jackson, Miss., and Kathleen Haas, Willow Grove Brook, Ill.; three sons, Nick, Long Wood, Fla., Joe, Melbourne Beach, Fla., and Pat, Dickinson; and one sister, Elizabeth Anderson, Dickinson. Leona Metzger
Leona Metzger, 90, Mandan, died May 4, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Hebron, with the Rev. Edward Parker officiating. Burial will be in Hebron United Methodist Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Leona Kitzan was born Nov. 4, 1906, near Antelope, the daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Lossing) Kitzan. She married Jacob C. Metzger, Oct. 12, 1924, in Hebron, where they made their home prior to moving to Mandan in 1966.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hebron, and had been a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck since May 1, 1994. A devoted homemaker and loving mother of five children, she loved to bake and cook. She also found enjoyment in her embroidery. To Leona, the well-being of her family was of primary importance.

She will be deeply missed by those who survive her, including one daughter and son-in-law, Esther and Leo Voltz, Grand Rapids, Minn.; four sons and daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Lenora, Park City, Mont., Richard and Laverne, Seattle, Leslie and Carol, Mandan, and Dennis and Linda, Bismarck; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Adeline Heinle, Auburn, Wash., Edna Mischel, Bismarck, and Alma Sailer, Hebron; and four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ben and Adella, Mandan, Art and Eleanor, Bismarck, Reuben and Elda, Stevensville, Mont., and Clarence and Agnes, Bowman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jacob, who died July 22, 1979; one son, Calvin; one great-grandson, Austin Frisk; and four brothers, Gus, Walter, Bill and Reinhold.

Walter LeRoy
UNDERWOOD -- Walter H. LeRoy, 89, Underwood, died May 3, 1997, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander Presbyterian Church, Underwood, with the Rev. David Peterson from Sturgis, S.D., and a longtime family friend, the Rev. James Wood officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with the Rev. Kenneth Dahlager officiating.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood. There will be no reviewal at the church.

Walter was born Nov. 18, 1907, to Walter and Myrtle (Collis) LeRoy. He attended rural grade school southwest of Underwood, graduated from high school in Bismarck, and attended the University of North Dakota. He married Cleome Englund, March 4, 1933, at her parents' home near Underwood. They farmed and ranched nine miles southwest of Underwood for almost 50 years. She died Sept. 11, 1989. Walter continued living on the farm until entering Prairieview Nursing Home in December 1994. Walter and Cleome enjoyed a Christ-centered life together. They traveled extensively in their spare time from the farm, eventually visiting all 50 states. They enjoyed spending their winters in Florida and Arizona in their later years. Walter enjoyed sharing their special experiences with family and friends.

Walter will be remembered by his family and friends as a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and an admired community leader. Walter was a past member of the Underwood School Board, McLean County Agriculture Improvement Association, chairman of the board of the Underwood Community Clinic Association, first chairman of the board of the Underwood Prairieview Nursing Home, served on the board of the McLean County Farm Bureau and the Missouri Slope Wool Pool and was the first president of the statewide North Dakota State Healthcare Association. He will also be remembered for his many contributions as a dedicated and active church leader. Walter was a member of the Christian Endeavor Convention in his early years and in that capacity traveled all around the country. He was an active member of Underwood Alexander Presbyterian Church where he was an elder for over 60 years and for many of those years also served as a Sunday school teacher. He was a board member of Covenant College and Theological Seminary. Walter was also instrumental in establishing the Great Plains Bible Camp east of Underwood and was active in the promotion and operation of that camp for many years.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Dorothy, Underwood; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Loretta Bastendorf, Fenton, Mich.; and two sisters-in-law, Ariel LeRoy, Minneapolis, and Beth LeRoy, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers; and one sister.

Otto Wagner
WASHBURN -- Otto Wagner, 74, Washburn, died May 3, 1997, in his home with his family at his side. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Washburn Baptist Church, with the Revs. Rick Torkelson and Ben Davis officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Otto Wagner was born Nov. 22, 1922, near Mercer, to Frederick and Mathilda (Naher) Wagner. Otto was raised on the family farm south of Mercer with his 10 brothers and sisters. He attended and graduated from Mercer High School. As a young man he worked in Washburn at the Standard Service and also at Hoffmann Motors. He married Esther Rothmann, Sept. 23, 1949, at Washburn. They made their home in Washburn where they raised their seven children. Otto owned and operated several service stations in Washburn and also worked construction. He was also employed by the City of Washburn for several years. He was semi-retired and enjoyed working on small engines. He loved the outdoors with its wildlife. His most important time was spent with his family, especially his grandchildren which he was very proud of.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; four sisters and daughters-in-law, Terrance and Linda, Chicago, Myron and Barbara, New Hartford, Conn., Dennis and Penny, Bottineau, and Jeffrey and Laurie, Washburn; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pamela and Richard Liebel, Diane and Michael Herdt, and Barbara Pochant, all of Washburn; 17 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Albert and Murnie, Walla Walla, Wash., Edwin, Turtle Lake, and Meinhardt, Mercer; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Clara and Reiny Schock, and Leona Goven, all of Turtle Lake, Louise Just, Mercer, and Erna and Walter Schock, Miles City, Mont.; and many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; one brother; two sisters; and four infant brothers and sisters.

Otto will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Melvin Erdmann
GOODRICH -- Melvin Erdmann, 60, Goodrich, died May 2, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Thomas Kinsella
Thomas J. Kinsella, 48, Minneapolis, died May 2, 1997, in Minneapolis. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cremation Society Chapel, Minneapolis.

He is survived by his parents, Jack and Audrey Kinsella, Mitchell, S.D.; and three brothers, James and Jay, both of Jerome, Ariz., and Steven, St. Paul, Minn.

Richard Burdick
MADDOCK -- Richard M. Burdick, 74, Maddock, died May 2, 1997, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Maddock, with burial in Hesper Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, DeVelda; two daughters, Wanda Rakow, Nicollet, Minn., and Belinda Poppenhagen, New Ulm, Minn.; and two sisters, Catherine Miles, Yuba City, Calif., and Donella Hansen, Harlingen, Texas. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Shawn Oban Jr.
Shawn Anthony Oban Jr., the infant son of Shawn and Kristin Oban, 522 W. Indiana Ave., died May 2, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Visitation will be held one hour before services at the funeral home.

Shawn will be loved and missed forever by his parents; one sister, Jazmyn; his grandparents, William and Alice Oban, Bismarck, Jack Bee II, Gilbert, Ariz., and Howard and Marcia Hansen, Mandan; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

James Bender
James A. Bender, 63, Bismarck, died May 4, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Evangelical Free Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dwight Walker officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck, with military rites provided by VFW Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

James A. Bender was born Dec. 15, 1933, in Washburn, the son of Julius and Amelia "Emilie" Renner Bender. He was raised and educated in Washburn and attended Bismarck High School. He married Shirley Walker, Feb. 7, 1954. Jim served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. Jim worked for the Neighborhood Grocery Store, Dakota Sand and Gravel, and Froeschle and Sons Construction. After working for Froeschle and Sons Construction for 22 years, erecting such buildings as Kirkwood Office Towers and the Employment Security Building in Bismarck, James, with his love of construction, started his own business, Metric Construction in 1976. While owning and operating Metric Construction, he erected such projects as North American Coal, Econo Foods and the Bismarck Airport Terminal. He retired in 1996.

James enjoyed camping, fishing and taking vacations with his family. He especially loved having long visits with his grandchildren. He is noted for caring for others all of his life, and he enjoyed doing so.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Paul and JoAnn, and Donald, all of Bismarck, Merlin, Shakapee, Minn., and Marlin and Vicki, Cheyenne, Wyo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jeff Huber, and Brenda and Warren Dietrich, all of Bismarck; 15 grandchildren, Emily, James, Donavin, Patricia, Wendy, Melissa, Jerry, Matthew, John, David, Rachael, Elizabeth, Dennis, Daniel and Kyle; two brothers, LeRoy, Washburn, Elmer, Rayland, S.D.; and one sister, Carol Adams, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Marian Nilsson
Marian Elizabeth Nilsson, 76, Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Bismarck, died April 23, 1997. Services were Monday at Anchorage Senior Center.

She is survived by one brother, Gordon Albrecht, Idaho; one sister, Bernice Stein, Colorado; three daughters and three sons. (Witzleben Funeral Home, Anchorage)

Bertha Doyle
RHAME -- Bertha L. Doyle, 86, Rhame, died May 2, 1997, in the Bowman hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Mel's Catholic Church, Rhame, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Marmarth.

She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Leader, El Cajon, Calif., and Mary Pickett, Paradise, Calif.; two sisters, Joy Graham and Norin Hanson, both of Marmarth; and two brothers, Delbert, Hagerman, Idaho, and Donald, Rhame. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Ole Thompson
CARRINGTON -- Ole Thompson, 66, Carrington, died May 3, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hurdsfield Lutheran Church, with inurnment in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; two sons, Russell, Aurora, Colo., and Jerry, Arvada, Colo.; and one daughter, Dawn Wagner, Arvada.

Mildred Wilson
Mildred W. Wilson, 80, Cheyenne, Wyo., died May 4, 1997, in a Cheyenne nursing home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pioneer Cemetery, Jordon, Mont.

She is survived by one son, Norman, Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, Sharon Welk, Cheyenne; two sisters, June Hoxmer, Kalispell, Mont., and Ruth Eklund, Livingston, Mont.; and one brother, Ray Merwin, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. (Stevenson and Sons Funeral Homes, Jordan)

Mary Kathleen and Emmalee Ann Gumeringer
Mary Kathleen and Emmalee Ann Gumeringer, the infant twin daughters of Ron and Toni Gumeringer, 330 W. Indiana Ave., were born and died May 1, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Richter officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Mary Kathleen and Emmalee Ann will be loved and missed forever by their parents; three brothers, Travis, Christopher and Benjamin; their grandparents, Anton and Mary Bullinger, Mandan, and Edmund and Leah Gumeringer, Esmond; and several special aunts, uncles and cousins.

They were preceded in death and greeted in heaven by two very special cousins, Tammy Olson and Ryan Bullinger. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Melvin was born Oct. 15, 1936, on the family farm north of Goodrich, to Frederick and Caroline "Lena" Erdmann. He grew up and attended country school. As a young man he farmed with his father. In 1966, he began working on road construction. He worked for several construction companies as a truck driver. Most recently he was employed by Lindteigen Construction of Turtle Lake. He enjoyed visiting with his friends and playing cards.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

He is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Connie, Goodrich; one sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and Arley Brakel, Heaton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gordon and Dean; and one sister, Elaine Pfarr.

Leo Eichenberger
Graveside services for Leo E. Eichenberger, 62, Bismarck, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church Cemetery, Driscoll. Lunch will follow at Grace Lutheran Church. (Boelter Funeral Home)
