Eddie E. Schlenker, 91, Bismarck, died Jan. 2, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Further arrangements are pending with Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck.

Mylo Woehl
WISHEK -- Mylo Edgar Woehl, 58, Fowler, Calif., formerly of Wishek, died Dec. 28, 1997, in a Fowler nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Haut Funeral Home Chapel, Wishek. Burial will be in Wishek City Cemetery.

He is survived by two daughters, Pamela and Sharon; one son, Paul; two brothers, Delane, Dickinson, and James, Jamestown; and three sisters, Evangeline Zimmerman, Napoleon, Eileen Yenney, Homer, Ala., and Dianna Veil, Rapid City, S.D. (Haut Funeral Home, Wishek)

Anne Wyciskala
Anne M. Wyciskala, 96, Vancouver, Wash., born Feb. 14, 1901, in Austria-Hungary, died Dec. 24, 1997, in Vancouver. A rosary and burial Mass were held at St. James Catholic Church, Vancouver, on Dec. 27, 1997.

Anne was a resident of Bismarck from 1910 to 1944, at which time she moved to Washington state.

Anne's family and church were her two priorities. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and its Altar Society in Vancouver, Wash.

She is survived by two sons, Charles and Robert, both of Seattle; 24 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Peter Balzer, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Turner and Pauline Broten; two sons, Richard and Donald; two sisters, Christine Aune and Elizabeth Schultz; and three brothers, Michael, Joseph and Chris Balzer.

Luella Herr
MINOT -- Luella Herr, 71, Minot, died Jan. 1, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Sawyer, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

She is survived by her husband, Louie; two daughters, Jill Hovde, Epping, and Joyce James, Turtle Lake; one son, Johnny, Sawyer; and two brothers, Reuben Faul, Sawyer, and Richard Faul, Minot. (Thomas Funeral Home, Minot)

Esther Kaelberer
NEW SALEM -- Esther Kaelberer, 97, New Salem, died Jan. 1, 1998, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be 2 p.m. MST Monday at Bethel United Church of Christ, south of New Salem, with the Rev. Duane Wacker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be after 2 p.m. MST Sunday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Esther was born on Oct. 20, 1901, in Metropolis, Ill., the daughter of Gustav and Elizabeth (Schaub) Wullschleger. They lived in many parts of the country before moving to New Salem in 1919, where her father was the pastor at Bethel Church.

She married Herman Kaelberer on Sept. 22, 1921, in that church. They farmed for many years south of New Salem. Herman died in 1957.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Dorlene of New Salem; four grandchildren, Ronald, Kevin and Monte Kaelberer and Vicki Nagel; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Ruth Held and Irene Bopp, both of New Salem; and one brother, Herbert Wullschleger of Mission, Kan. Eddie Schlenker
Eddie E. Schlenker, 91, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died Jan. 2, 1998, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. today and noon-9 p.m. Monday at Dakota Memorial Chapel, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Eddie was born Sept. 17, 1906, in Tripp, S.D., the son of Edward and Christina (Schell) Schlenker. He was raised and educated in Goodrich. He married Hazel Bertsch, Nov. 20, 1938. The couple farmed for seven years before moving into Goodrich, where Eddie was employed by the Goodrich School System. They moved to Bismarck in 1969, where he worked for the Bismarck School System.

Eddie loved to fish.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Joyce, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Lester Neff, Bismarck; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one step-great-granddaughter; and one step-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and five sisters.

The family prefers memorials to St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck.

Arnold Gilbert Sr.
CENTER -- Arnold "Arnie" Gilbert Sr., 73, Center, died Jan. 1, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Jay Spoonheim officiating.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services, all at the church.

Arnold Charles Gilbert was born on March 7, 1924, at Bently, the son of John W. and Doris (Evans) Gilbert. He was raised on the family farm and educated at Bert. He served the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946.

He married Iris M. Fohl on May 1, 1949, at Mott. He was employed with Central Bus Lines of Bismarck, and the Bismarck Cab Co. during the 1950s. He then joined the Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 897 and was a past president of this union.

Arnie and his family moved to Center on July 4, 1964, where he participated in the construction of several power plants in the area. He retired in 1989.

Arnie was an avid fisherman and hunter, loving the time he spent in the outdoors. Some of his greatest joys were his yard and garden, and being with his family and friends. He was loved by many and we will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his wife, Iris; seven sons and six daughters-in-law, David and Nita, Madera, Calif., James and Diana, Zap, Arnold Jr. and Mary, Kennewick, Wash., Tracy and Karen, Cuppertino, Calif., Paul, Gillette, Wyo., Bruce and Tammy, San Jose, Calif., and Phillip and Bernice, New Bedford, Mass.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Doris and Harold, and Carrie, all of rural Hannover, and Rita and Dale, Center; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delora and Chester Olson, Mott, and Mable Jane and Virden Hoffman, Sapielpa, Okla.; one brother, John Jr., Joplin, Missouri; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, Eric, in 1976; his parents; one brother, Gayle; and one grandson, Jerry, in 1992. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Leo Pfiefle
WASHBURN -- Leo W. Pfiefle, 84, Washburn, died Jan. 2, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Bradley Brauer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn, with military rites by Washburn American Legion Post No. 12.

Visitation will be 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Leo Walter Pfiefle was born May 7, 1913, at Washburn, to Jacob and Pauline (Lang) Pfiefle. He grew up in Washburn where he helped his parents operate a dairy farm. After graduating from Washburn High School he worked for Washburn Motor Co. In 1937 he started his own business as Leo's Service and Chevrolet.

In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was discharged in September 1945 and returned to Washburn to resume his business.

He married Verna Riskedahl June 2, 1946, at Tuttle. They lived in Washburn where Leo operated his business until 1965. He then worked for Haas Chevrolet in Turtle Lake as a salesman until 1978 when he began working for his son, Rob Pfiefle, in the marine business. After Rob's death in 1982 he continued working for the new owners, Larry and Laverne Coons. In 1992 he started selling boats for Twin City Marine at Bismarck until 1996.

Leo was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He always had a special love and "connection" with all small children. He enjoyed hobbies of hunting, fishing, gardening and berry picking. He also enjoyed nature to the fullest. Leo had served on the Washburn City Commission for 16 years. He was a past chief and 35-year member of Washburn Fire Department and a 53-year member of Washburn American Legion Post No. 12.

He is survived by his wife, Verna; one son and two daughters-in-law, Paul and Kathy Pfiefle, Bismarck, and Cindy Weiand, Mandan; one daughter and two sons-in-law, Judy and Michael Maslowski, Bismarck, and Gary Grueneich, Bismarck; 10 grandchildren, Paula, Jason, Chad, Kari, Michelle, Heather, Michael, Josh, Brooke and Matthew; and five great-grandchildren, Jackie, John Paul, Carson, Nicholas and Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert; one daughter, Pat Grueneich; and infant twins.

Ronald Bruce
NEW TOWN -- Ronald Bruce, 36, New Town, died Dec. 31, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at New Town Civic Center, with burial in Snowbird Cemetery, rural New Town.

He is survived by his mother, Merle; two sisters, Cheryl Danks, Bismarck, and Lisa Goodbird, New Town; three brothers, Kevin, Beulah, Todd, Killdeer, and Lynn, Hazen; one son, Justin, Mandaree; and one daughter, Ronelle, Mandaree. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

Alta Johnson
MINOT -- Alta Johnson, 85, Minot, died Jan. 3, 1998, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson. Further arrangements are pending at Thomas Funeral Home, Minot.

Olga Wahl
HARVEY -- Olga Wahl, 89, Harvey, died Jan. 3, 1998, in the Harvey hospital. Arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Ida Fuhrman
BOWDON -- Ida Fuhrman, 93, Bowdon, died Jan. 1, 1998, in the New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bowdon Lutheran Church, with burial in Fuhrman Family Cemetery, Bowdon.

She is survived by two daughters, Norma Bruer, Santa Anna, Calif., and LaVerne Bruer, Bowdon; and four sons, Robert, Orlando, Calif., Eugene, Crosby, Dale, Milnor, and Wayne, Williston. (Nelson Funeral Home, Bowdon)

Bertram Piesik
BEACH -- Bertram Thomas Piesik, 82, Bismarck, died Dec. 19, 1997, in Bismarck. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Beach, with burial in Minneapolis at a later date. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)

David Thompson
WHITEWOOD, S.D. -- David L. Thompson, 66, Whitewood, died Dec. 30, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday at Bowman Lutheran Church, with burial in Bowman Cemetery.

He is survived by five sons, Jack, Aurora, Gene, Whitewood, Dan, Reva, Dana, New Underwood, and Andrew, Buffalo; three daughters, Anita McLaughlin, Bowman, N.D., Carol Feist, Ludlow, and Bonnie Thompson, Buffalo; and four brothers, Don, Buffalo, Bob, Ludlow, Roger, Bowman, and Dennis, Buffalo. Phillip Eagle Sr.
WAKPALA, S.D. -- Phillip D. Eagle Sr., 64, Wakpala, died Jan. 2, 1998, in the Mobridge nursing home. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Wakpala, with burial in the Eagle Family Ranch, rural Mobridge.

He is survived by two sons, Dwaine, Fort Yates, and Anthony, Wakpala; three daughters, Margaret Eagle, Mobridge, Jewel Eagle, Bismarck, and Janice Two Hearts, Fort Yates; four brothers, Glen, Ted and Chandler, Fort Yates, and Clyde, St. Paul, Minn.; and eight sisters, Leola Saye, Sioux Falls, S.D., Delores Buffalo, Bridger, S.D., Belva Eagle, Fort Yates, Lillian Zahn, Solen, Phyllis McKee, Lynda Kidder, Barbara St. John and Bernadine Eagle, all of Fort Yates. Mary Krieger
DUNN CENTER -- Mary Krieger, 84, Dunn Center, died Jan. 2, 1998, in the Killdeer nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Martha Opp
GLEN ULLIN -- The prayer service for Martha Opp, 96, Glen Ullin, has been changed to 4:30 p.m. MST at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron. She died Jan. 2, 1998, in Glen Ullin.

Lars Christenson
WASHBURN -- Lars E. Christenson, 98, Twin Valley, Minn., died Jan. 3, 1998, in a Twin Valley nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.

He is survived by one brother, Clarence, Bismarck; and one sister, Helga Thrailkill, Cortez, Colo. (Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn)

Richard Hilfer
Richard J. Hilfer, 62, 2200 Pirates Loop S.E., Mandan, died Jan. 2, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Monday. A Christian Mothers rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30, both at the funeral home.

Richard was born Nov. 16, 1935, at Fort Rice, the son of Adam and Mary (Gangl) Hilfer. Richard was raised and educated in Mandan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1954 to 1957 in the 82nd Airborne Division. He married Esther Barth, June 27, 1959, in Mandan. Richard worked for the Super Valu Warehouse in Bismarck from 1960 to 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brent and Becky, and Stuart and Shelli, all of Mandan; three daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Kay and Bruce Nelson, and Laura Hilfer, all of Mandan, and Tracy Hilfer, Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Alexis, Travis, Corbin, Kaela, Bradley and Hannah Hilfer; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Arthur and Bernice, Mandan, and Dennis and Sherry, Sioux City, Iowa; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Don Fairaizl, and Gert and Joe Schaff, Mandan, Lorraine Fettig, Brooten, Minn., and Ellen and Clarence Small, Bismarck.

Richard will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother; and Jennifer.

Melvin Koenig
UNDERWOOD -- Melvin L. Koenig, 75, Underwood, died Jan. 3, 1998, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Underwood, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Melvin Lowell Koenig was born Aug. 27, 1922, to Fred and Bertha (Harris) Koenig on the family farm southeast of Underwood. He attended Underwood school and graduated from Underwood High School in 1940.

On Oct. 11, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps, where he served as the flight engineer on a patrol bomber until his discharge Nov. 9, 1945. He then went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a surveyor in 1946 at Riverdale.

On June 3, 1950, he married Rose Kessler at McClusky. They made their home in Riverdale until he retired in 1980. They then moved to Underwood and he worked as a building inspector for 11 years and also did some surveying.

Melvin was a member of First Baptist Church and held the office of treasurer for many years. He enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; one daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Dale Foreman, Watford City; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Mark and Kim, Riverdale, Michael and Ann, Wheatland, Wyo., Miles and Chong Hye, Killeen, Texas, and Edward, Bismarck; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters, Mildred Johnson and Lois Johannes, both of Bismarck, Lillian Soliday, Usk, Wash., and Enid Mummert, Seattle; and one brother, Doyle Koenig, Garrison.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, LeRoy; and one sister, Emeral.
