Louise Burke
Louise Burke, 1111 N. First St., the widow of Thomas J. Burke, former chief justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court, died Sept. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. George's Episcopal Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kendall Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Louise Copenhaver was born June 14, 1912, in Macomb, Ill. She later moved to Grand Forks, where she attended St. James Academy before moving to Devils Lake. She graduated from Devils Lake High School and attended the University of North Dakota. She then moved to Bismarck. She married Thomas J. Burke, Feb. 18, 1937. She worked as a legal secretary for William F. Murray and Max D. Rosenberg. She retired in 1977 after working for the North Dakota Public Employees Retirement Board for many years.

Louise enjoyed the arts and was a talented painter and pianist. In 1931 she won the piano solo event for North Dakota Class A schools. She was also an avid bridge player.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Quentin Anderson, Minneapolis, and Elizabeth and William Lucas, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Morgen-Burke, Langley, Wash.; her brother, Henry Copenhaver, Mansfield, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her aunt, Nellie Ausbury Zalar, Brookfield, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her mother, Hazel Ausbury Powell; her stepfather, Arthur A. Powell; her father, Henry Copenhaver; and one sister, Helen Copenhaver Mann.

The family prefers memorials to American Diabetes Association, North Dakota Affiliate, Inc., P.O. Box 5234, Grand Forks, N.D. 58206-5234.

Ammelia Vetter
Ammelia "Emma" Vetter, 84, Bosque Farms, N.M., died Sept. 14, 1997. Memorial services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Emma was born Aug. 8, 1913, on a farm near Fellan. She was raised in Flasher and later on a farm near Flasher where she attended a country school. On Feb. 16, 1933, she married Bernard Vetter at St. Alexius Church in Bismarck. During the next seven years four children were born. In the early 1940s she made her home in Brisbane, where she was a full-time mom plus a working mom serving as postmistress of the Brisbane Post Office conveniently located in their home. In the mid-50s her family relocated to Bismarck where she became a maintenance assistant with Barney at Roosevelt Grade School until her first major stroke in 1983. In 1989 she suffered a second major stroke and in 1990, moved to Bosque Farms to live with her daughter.

She was active in the Stroke Club, making many new friends. During Emma's pre-stroke years she was very active, enjoying gardening, baking, embroidering, various arts and crafts, painting her house, shopping and traveling. Even though she will be missed we celebrate her going to the home Jesus promises to all of us and we will rejoice when we will once again be joined together as a family in Heaven.

She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Alvina and Robert Raymond, Glendale, Ariz., Gungild Vetter, Bosque Farms; one son, Leo, Bosque Farms; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Frances and Phil Thomas, Mandan, and Elizabeth "Betty" Schaff, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Julia Schaff, Mandan; and two grandchildren, Stefanie and Steven, Arizona.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard "Barney," in 1982; an infant daughter, Lorraine; her parents, Raphael and Rose Yochim Schaff; three brothers, Adam, Leo and Anthony Schaff; and two sisters, Caroline Rasch Lang and Florentine Schaff. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Mamie McCay
Mamie McCay, 82, Bismarck, died Sept. 17, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. Joe Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Mamie Viana Elizabeth Holapa was born Aug. 17, 1915, near Kintyre, the daughter of John and Ida (Hendrickson) Holapa. She was raised and educated in the Kintyre area. She married Paul McCay, Nov. 3, 1937. They farmed in the Moffit area until 1964 when they moved to Bismarck where she has since resided.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Georgine and Bill Harrington, Koppell, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Gwendolyn, Bismarck, and David and Roberta, Alexandria, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillian McNabb, Lynwood, Wash., and Violet and Clarence Ward, Shealdon, Wash.; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl and Hattie, Springfield, Va., and Donald and Dot, Kingston, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Darlene; four sisters; and four brothers.

Charles Binstock
NEW ENGLAND -- Charles Binstock, 62, New England, died Sept. 17, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 9 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; six daughters, Carla Steinbach and Reyne Kadrmas, both of Dickinson, Charlene Binstock, Mandan, Donna Neil, Kirkland, Wash., Laurie Ackerman, Brentwood, Tenn., and Rachel Binstock, New England; one son, Daniel, New England; eight sisters, Bertha Kinzel, New Hradec, Josephine Kudrna, St. Anthony, Minn., Mary Pachl and Cecilia Frank, both of Vancouver, Wash., Rose Senn, Bernie Binstock and Hilda Binstock, all of Dickinson, and Leona Kessel, Belfield. Margaret Kohler
DEVILS LAKE -- Margaret J. Kohler, 85, Devils Lake, died Sept. 17, 1997, in the Devils Lake hospital. Arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Leeds.

Dorthea Hareland
BOWMAN -- Dorthea Hareland, 80, Bowman, died Sept. 18, 1997, in the Bowman nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton, with burial in Haley Cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Evelyn Gruber, Scranton. (Krebsbach Funeral Service, Bowman)

Casey Lebsock
WILLISTON -- Casey Lebsock, 20, Williston, died Sept. 10, 1997, in an automobile accident near Williston. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Assembly of God Church, Williston.

He is survived by his parents, Nancy and Tim Lebsock; his grandparents, Robert and Lillie Hought, Bonetraill, and George and Evelyn Lebsock, Williston; his brothers, Joshua and Zachary, both at home; and his sister, Taylor, at home. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

William Jurgens
TAYLOR -- William Jurgens, 82, Taylor, died Sept. 16, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Immanual United Church of Christ, Taylor, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Daryl, Richardton; one daughter, Doris Schmaltz, Bismarck; and two brothers, Elmer, Belfield, and George, Auburn, Calif. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Nettie Zweigle
HARVEY -- Nettie Zweigle, 84, Harvey, died Sept. 18, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mennonite Brethren Church, rural Harvey. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

James Kubischta
DICKINSON -- James V. Kubischta, 86, formerly of Dickinson, died Sept. 19, 1997, in Minnesota. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Kasper Jahner
DICKINSON -- Kasper Jahner, 85, Dickinson, died Sept. 18, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Minnie Heisler
HARVEY -- Minnie Heisler, 91, Harvey, died Sept. 19, 1997, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Donald Frohlich
Donald R. Frohlich, 64, 1722 N. 15th St., died of cancer, Sept. 19, 1997. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites provided by Bismarck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary and vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Don was born March 15, 1933, in Crown Butte, the son of Peter and Elizabeth (Markel) Frohlich. He was raised and attended school in the Crown Butte area. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan from 1953-1955. On Nov. 3, 1956, he married Donna L. Moch at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. Don was employed with Saks News from 1955 until retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Eagles Club, Amvets Club, Elks Lodge and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and thought the world of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Paulette, Bismarck, Jay and Cindy, Bismarck, and Jerry and Kathy, Boulder, Colo.; four grandchildren, Noah, Emily, Chelsea and Lindsay; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph and Frances Frohlich, Grand Forks, and Tom and Jeanette Frohlich, Mandan; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Elsie and Edward Friesz, Mandan, Lucy and Tony Wangler, Wishek, and Bernie and Don Prouty, and Vera Frohlich, all of Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edna McAnaw
Edna E. McAnaw, 89, Sacramento, Calif., died Sept. 16, 1997, in Sacramento. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 28 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Sacramento, with private burial in East Lawn Memorial Park.

Edna was a native of Wilton. In 1926 she entered nurses training at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, completing a three-year program ahead of her class. Edna then traveled to Sacramento, working for 3 years at the county hospital. In 1936 she married her husband, Harold, and they opened McAnaw's Pharmacy at 16th and F streets in downtown Sacramento.

Edna and Harold were charter members of Del Paso Country Club. Edna also served as president from 1952-1953 for the Sacramento Pharmaceutical Auxiliary. She also donated her time for many charitable organizations, working for Red Cross and Sacramento Blood Bank to name a few. She was very active with the Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon for 11 years. Edna also worked with the Society for the blind.

She is survived by her three sisters, Wilma Neibauer, Seattle, Lorraine Powell, Packwood, Wash., and Irene Anderson, Wilton; four brothers, Edwin W. Johnson, Roseville, Calif., Orville Speten, Wilton, Rudolf Speten, Wilton, and Henry Speten, North Fork, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1959.

Memorials may be made in Edna's memory to Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Anton Fricke
BALDWIN -- Anton Ed Fricke, 84, Moorhead, Minn., formerly of Baldwin, died Sept. 18, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Anton was born Feb. 2, 1913, in the Baldwin area, the son of Ernest and Ida (Jahns) Fricke. He was raised and educated in Baldwin. He farmed on the family farm until he entered the infantry. He served in World War II and received an honorable discharge. After his service to his country, Anton returned to Baldwin and worked on the family farm. Because of Anton's ill health, he lived in Moorhead at the Moorhead Health Care Center where he lived until his death.

He is survived by three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Ralph and Meta, Baldwin, Lee and Louise, Baldwin, Norman and Mildred, Rockford, Wash., and Florence Fricke, Mandan; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard; and one sister, Gertrude.

Johnny Buechler
BEULAH -- Johnny Buechler, 74, Beulah, died Sept. 18, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MDT Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Kris Nyman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. MDT Sunday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Johnny was born Nov. 9, 1922, at Zap, the son of Christ and Helena (Piepke) Buechler. He was baptized at Golden Valley, and confirmed at Peace Congregational Church, Zap. Johnny was raised and educated south of Zap. On March 17, 1945, Johnny was inducted into the U.S. Navy. He served as a Third Class Carpenter's Mate in World War II in Okinawa. He was discharged July 1946. On Aug. 25, 1946, he married Lorine Wiedrich at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Zap. They farmed south of Zap until their retirement, then moved to Beulah in the spring of 1988.

Johnny was active on the Zap School Board, Zap Farmer's Elevator Board, Zap Rural Fire Department, Herman Schmidt VFW Post No. 7759, Immanuel Lutheran Church Council, Mercer County Soil Conservation District Board, and FHA Board of Directors. He was presently a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Beulah. Johnny enjoyed playing cards, reading, hunting, fishing and camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lorine; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Judy, Zap; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Bill Neumann, Bismarck, Dawn and Tom Garrett, Hazen, and Kim and Jesse Marion, Dunseith; 11 grandchildren, Terri and Lonnie Barth, Lauri and Brent Dschaak, Misty and Brendon Buechler, Andrew and Emily Neumann, Dean and Heather Garrett, and Jake, Jay and Cole Marion; five sisters, Katherine Kusler, Lydia Binder and Alma Kusler, all of Beulah, Martha Hiner and Odeen Parker, both of California; two brothers, Walter, Washington, and Clarence, Minot; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bertha Bieber and Emma Anderson; two brothers, Eddie and Art; and one granddaughter, Mandy Lee Buechler.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to a blood research center of their choice.

Nellie Olson
DRISCOLL -- Nellie C. Olson, 93, Driscoll, died Sept. 18, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, Driscoll. Graveside services will be held at 1:15 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Boelter Funeral Home.

Nellie was born Sept. 23, 1903, in Moffit, the daughter of Valentine and Katheriana Benz. Nellie married Henry C. Olson, March 28, 1922, in Bismarck. They lived on a farm in Christiana Township until 1936, when they moved to Driscoll. In 1939 they moved to a farm north of Driscoll, and in 1943, to her present home in Driscoll. During her lifetime, she managed two cafes in Driscoll and later cooked at Driscoll School for 11 years with her lifelong friend, Martha Dienstmann.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, quilting, letter writing and traveling, baking carmel rolls and cakes. She always had lots of company and enjoyed playing cards. Nellie loved to dance in her younger years, and she was the number one fan of Lawrence Welk.

She is survived by one daughter, Diane, Greenacres, Wash.; three sons, Leonard and Douglas, both of Driscoll, and Donald, Stanford, Mont.; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; one son, Wayne; and two grandchildren.

Willard Yellow Bird Sr.
WHITE SHIELD -- Willard Yellow Bird Sr., 72, White Shield, died Sept. 17, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at White Shield School Gym, with burial in St. Andrew's Cemetery, rural White Shield.

He is survived by his wife, Magdalen; four daughters, Nelrene, Minot, Cheryl, Minneapolis, Linda Gonzalez, Bismarck, and Jessie Renteria, Salem, Ore.; 11 sons, Charles, Albuquerque, N.M., Willard Jr., Moorhead, Minn., Dennis, Garrison, Michael, Lawrence, Kan., Thomas, Polsen, Mont., Elroy, Rolla, Monte, Marlon and Loren, all of Fargo, Rodney, Madison, Wis., and Corey, White Shield; two sisters, Darlene Meyers, White Shield, and Joyce Krueger, White Shield; and one brother, Harold, Garrison. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Alois Wikenheiser
Alois Wikenheiser, 73, Strasburg, died Sept. 19, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Monday at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where a rosary will be said at 8 tonight. Visitation also will be held at the church one hour before services.

Alois was born July 2, 1924, at Strasburg, the son of Wendelin and Barbara (Baumgartner) Wikenheiser. He attended rural schools. On Oct. 29, 1947, he married Viola Mattern at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg. They farmed four miles north of Strasburg. In 1986 they moved into Strasburg.

He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church, and a member of third and fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He held various offices in the KC Club. He enjoyed farming and liked to fish. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Viola; four sons and daughters-in-law, David and Marsha, New Orleans, Kenny and Elaine, Linton, Mark and Kim, Minneapolis, and Don and Deloris, Strasburg; four daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Mike Zimmerman, Towner, Elizabeth and Leo Keifer, Hague, Susan and Rick Rebel, Dickinson, and Judy and Ken Stone, Berwick, La.; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Clarence and Nina, Strasburg, William, Fargo, and Raymond, Linton; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Bertha and Teoph Balliet, Linton, Eleanor Ledger, Bismarck, and Victoria and Harry Voller, Strasburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Barbara Ann and Kathleen Marie; and one son, John Steven.
