Herman A. Urness
Herman A. Urness, 74, of Park River, ND, died at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Dahlen Lutheran Church, Dahlen, ND. Rev. Vernon Severson will officiate and Interment will be in Zion Cemetery, Dahlen. Military Honors and Flag Presentation will be accorded by the John Larson Post No. 247 of the Petersburg, ND, American Legion.
Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services in the church on Saturday.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dan Urness, James Iverson, Peter Bechel, Richard Laber, Wallace Horejsi and Charles Laber.
Herman Urness was born Oct. 6, 1926 in Dahlen Township, Nelson County, near Dahlen, ND, the son of Andrew and Hilda (Dahlin) Urness. Herman received Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church near Dahlen and confirmed his Christian faith at Dahlen Lutheran Church in Dahlen. He was raised and grew to manhood near Dahlen, where he also received his public education.
He was inducted into the United States Army and served in occupied Japan. After receiving his Honorable Discharge he returned to Dahlen to farm on the family farmstead until his retirement.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Myer of June 16, 1950 at West Prairie Lutheran Church, near Jessie, ND. The couple lived and farmed near Dahlen until moving to Park River in July, 1997 where they have since lived.
Herman was a member of the Dahlen Lutheran Church and served on the Dahlen Lutheran Church Council. He was a willing participant in community activities including the Dahlen Township Board, and the Dahlen Roll-A-Ways Square Dance Club. Herman was a member of the John Larson Post No. 247 of the Petersburg, ND American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Park River, ND; son, Richard (Cleo) Urness of Park River, ND; daughters, Linda (Steve) Gertz of Minot, ND and Dorothy (Michael) Beaver of Niagara, ND; six grandchildren, Julie Koepp, Eric Urness, Amanda Gertz, James Beaver, Dawn Beaver and Charles Beaver; brother, Alton (Joyce) Urness of Elmhurst, IL and sister, Doris (Lyle) Pratt of Northwood, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bertha Welch and brother, Arnold Urness.
The Bakke Funeral Home of Fordville, ND, is in charge of arrangements.

Lloyd Trihub
BERTHOLD, N.D. - Lloyd L. Trihub, 71, of Berthold, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at a Minot hospital, following a brief battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today, Aug. 19, at Zion Lutheran Church in Berthold. Graveside services were scheduled for approximately 1 p.m. today at the Hope Lutheran Cemetery at Makoti.
Memorials are suggested to the Berthold High School Athletic Department. The Thomas Family Funeral Home of Minot was in charge of arrangements.

Ted Tofte
May 25, 1915-Aug. 16, 2003
WILLISTON, N.D. - Theodore "Ted" Tofte, 88, a longtime Williston resident, passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at First Lutheran Church in Williston. The Rev. Dean Larson will officiate and interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
Theodore Tofte was born May 25, 1915, on the family farm at Twelve Mile Township, east of Williston, to Ingvald and Anna (Jacobson) Tofte. He was educated at a country school, and then formed a farming partnership with his brother, John. Later they separated and farmed individually.
Ted was a baptized and confirmed member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and later became a member of the First Lutheran Church in Williston. He was a life member of the North Dakota Odd Fellow Lodge and The Loyal Order of the Moose.
Ted enjoyed playing pool and whist until he had six detached retinas, which ultimately caused him to become legally blind in the 1980s.
He was a member of the Bjarne Lodge Sons of Norway folk dancers when they entertained twice at the Minot Norsk Hostfest. He was an excellent dancer and especially enjoyed the polka. Ted was one of 16 men and women who organized the Williston Area Singles Club in November of 1974, which still meets regularly at the Heritage Center.
Ted never married. He is survived by two sisters, Agnes Harstad of Williston and Julia Barstad of Ross; two brothers, Iver Tofte of Corvallis, Ore., and Edwin Tofte of Williston; 23 nieces and nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Preceding Ted in death were his parents and five brothers, Amund, Peter, Alfred, Hjalmer and John.
A private family gathering will be held at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, in the parlor next to the chapel, at First Lutheran Church.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Everson Funeral Home in Williston and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Irvin Larter
PLENTYWOOD, Mont. - Irvin E. Larter of Plentywood, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood, three days after his 80th birthday.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel in Plentywood. Pastor David C. Curtright will officiate and interment will follow at the Outlook Cemetery.
The Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Aslakson
March 2, 1927-June 17, 2003
AMBROSE, N.D. - Gladys Mildred Aslakson, of Ambrose, formerly of Ventura, Calif., went to her eternal home on May 2, 2003 at the home of her brother-in-law in Anaheim, Calif. She had been in declining health for several years with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held for Gladys and her sister, Helen Aslakson Serio, at 10 a.m. July 11 in the chapel at the Stakston-Martin Funeral Home in Crosby. Inurnment will be at the Ambrose Cemetery, Ambrose.
Gladys Mildred Aslakson was born March 2, 1927, to Halvor and Mette (Sandvik) Aslakson, a pioneer family, at their farm home in Ambrose. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
She received her elementary education at rural Blooming Prairie School No. 3, where her teachers inspired her desire for learning and encouraged her to pursue her artistic abilities.
She graduated from Ambrose High School 1944, and attended Minot Business College in 1944 and 1945, earning a certificate in business education. In 1952, she earned a bachelor of science degree with a physical education major from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. Later she received a master of arts degree from the University of California at Long Beach, Calif.
Prior to attending the university, she taught three years in Divide County rural schools in Elmgreem, Blooming Prairie and Writing Rock.
In 1952, she and her sister, Helen, accepted teaching positions in California. Gladys taught three years at Escondido and 24 years in the Oxnard High School District, where she taught at Oxnard and Camarillo High Schools. At Camarillo, she also was chairperson of the girl's physical education department.
Throughout her lifetime Gladys remained a free-spirited individual. She continued to take classes in painting frequently, using water color media to design and paint cards, which were treasured by those who received them.
She followed her childhood dream of obtaining a private pilot license. She enjoyed golfing, dancing, square dancing, biking and traveling.
Gladys is survived by the last of her siblings, Ardelle Aslakson of Anaheim, Calif.; four cousins, Orville Vassen, Ambrose, Walter Aslakson, Zahl, Helen Nesje, Crosby and Marlys Holland, Lakeland, Fla.; a brother-in-law; sisters in law; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Howard, John and Milton; and her sister, Helen Aslakson Serio.

Otto Bakken
TIOGA, N.D. - Otto Bakken, 90, of Tioga, passed away Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at the Long Term Care Center in Tioga.
Funeral service arrangements will be announced by the Fulkerson Funeral Home of Tioga.

Lloyd Carlson
Nov. 11, 1929-Jan. 21, 2002
MCINTOSH, Minn. - Lloyd "Coach" Carlson, 72, of McIntosh, Minn., passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at McIntosh.
Funerals services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McIntosh.
The Rev. Elton Jorde will officiate and interment will follow at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in McIntosh.
Bernon Lloyd Carlson was born Nov. 11, 1929, to Henry and Helga (Oppegaard) Carlson, in Knute Township near Erskine, Minn.
He grew up in McIntosh and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1947, and from Moorhead State University in 1952.
During the Korean War, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and served for some time in Japan.
In 1954, Lloyd came back to McIntosh to teach and coach young people.
Lloyd met Ruth Erickson in 1960, and they were united in marriage on July 7, 1962, in Williston, N.D.
They lived in McIntosh, where they raised a daughter and three sons.
Lloyd taught school for 37 years and coached various sports for 25 years. Lloyd retired from the Win-E-Mac School District in 1991.
He was inducted into the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1993.
Lloyd was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church; the McIntosh V.F.W. Post No. 6891, where he had served as Commander; the McIntosh Lion's Club, where he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award; the Retired Teacher's Association; the 9 to 3 O'clock Coffee Club, the 10 O'clock Coffee Club.
He also participated in many other activities.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Ruth; and his daughter, Jennifer Carlson, both of McIntosh; three sons: Brian of Elk River, Philip and his wife, Amy, of Sauk Rapids, and Scot of Elk River; four grandchildren; three sisters: Ila Pederson and Evonne Hartel and her husband, Orvin, all of McIntosh, and Lorraine Carlson of Burnsville; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Thorlief Pederson.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the McIntosh Community Center and for an hour before services Monday at the church. The Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
