Edward Freier
Edward Freier, 83, Bismarck, died Jan. 26, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Kermit Culver and Sam Graf officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, in the Napoleon Cemetery, Napoleon.

Visitation will be Thursday from noon-9 p.m., at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Edward was born in rural Logan County on July 22, 1914, to Philip and Dorthea (Ehli) Freier. He married Hulda Wentz on Sept. 30, 1937. They resided on the farm 15 miles east of Napoleon until 1962, after which they moved to Napoleon.

In 1964, Edward and Hulda moved to Bismarck. They shared their love with each other and their sons, Garry and Larry, until April 15, 1972, at which time Hulda died at the age of 53.

Edward started farming in 1935 with his brother after his parents retired and moved to Streeter. He married Martha (Albrecht) Kienzle on March 6, 1976, at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck. They resided at 1011 N. 13th St. in Bismarck for the past 2[1/2] years.

He enjoyed farming and livestock, and especially horses. He shared stories of how the horses would always find their way home in a snow storm. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially fishing with his brother-in-law.

Edward is survived by his wife, Martha; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Garry and Loris, Bismarck, and Larry, Ellendale; three grandsons, Travis and Trent, both of Bismarck, and Corey, Minto; two granddaughters, Julie, Minto, and Vonnie Schramm and her husband, Jake, of Mott; two great grandchildren; and one sister, Lucy Grenz, Wishek.

He is also survived by one stepdaughter and step son-in-law, Delores and Vernon Unrath, Mandan; three stepsons and one step daughter-in-law, Gary and Linda Kienzle, Washburn, Ronnie Kienzle, Mandan, and Harely Kienzle, Rifle, Colo.; nine step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by Hulda; his parents; an infant daughter; and two brothers, Jacob and Gust. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Mathilda Friesz
Mathilda Friesz, 81, 126 Boise Ave., Bismarck, died Jan. 26, 1998, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Church of the Ascension, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. A parish vigil will be said at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Mathilda was born on Oct. 10, 1916, in Odense, N.D. She was the daughter of George and Katherine (Leingang) Schmidt. She was raised and educated in Odense. On Nov. 21, 1938, she married Jacob Friesz in Odense. Jacob and Mathilda farmed in the Flasher area until 1979 when they moved to Bismarck.

Mathilda had a strong sense of self which showed in her meticulous appearance and in her clean home. She was energetic and a hard worker in the things she would do. Her generous spirit would show by putting others first.

She enjoyed life especially with her family, as she would share her talents as a cook of the old German recipes. She had a great respect and love of the beauty of nature. Her strong faith and love of her family will be cherished by her family and friends.

Mathilda is survived by four sons and one daughter-in-law, Loren, Waseca, Minn., Richard and Diane, Bismarck, Duane, Salt Lake City, and Dennis, Fargo; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Marlene and Ed Zaharis, Tracy, Calif., Leona and Robert Dillon, Red Lodge, Mont., Bernadine Tosterud, Grand Junction, Colo., Kathleen Kopp, Bismarck, and Sharon and John Michlitsch, Fargo; 11 grandchildren; one brother, George Schmidt, Bismarck; four sisters, Katie Geiger, Mandan, Moncia Geiger and Rose Heinert, both of Bismarck, and Peggy Sturn, Minot.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, John, Joe, Jack, Tony and Peter Schmidt; and two sisters, Betty Heinert and Bertha Leingang. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Barbara Joyce
Barbara C. Joyce, 87, 228 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, died Jan. 25, 1998, at her home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, at Church of Corpus Christi, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Barbara Barth was born on Dec. 29, 1910, in Mandan, the daughter of Frank and Frances (Jochim) Barth. She grew up and attended school in Mandan. On Sept. 19, 1933, she married Patrick Joyce in Mandan. The couple made their home in Bismarck, where they raised four children. Mr. Joyce died in May of 1986.

Barbara worked at Woolworth's, Chateau Inn, The Pancake House, St. Alexius Hospital, and the Holiday Inn.

She was a very caring mother and grandmother. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her life.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Lyla, and Tim, all of Bismarck, and Alice, of Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Steve Jahner, Bismarck; 17 grandchildren, Mike, Rick, Nancy and Mark Joyce, Kelly Rixen, Jim and Don Joyce, Stephanie, Scott, and Marcie Jahner, Joyce George, Tracee Edick, Lloyd, Patrick, Preston, Lonnie and Joey Joyce; 10 great-grandchildren, Rachel and Jonathon Thomas Rixen, Jamie Joyce, Jenny, Josh and Jeremy Schutt, Brittany and Brandy George, and Bobby Edick; and one sister, Eva Leingang, Seattle, Wash.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick; one son, Dennis; three brothers; and five sisters. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Adam Patzner
Adam P. Patzner, 67, 1222 E. Thayer Ave., Bismarck, died Jan. 25, 1998, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Larry Jahnke officiating. Flag presentation will be by the V.F.W., Gilbert N. Nelson Post No. 1326, Bismarck.

He was born August 26, 1930, at Sykeston, the son of Joseph and Anna (Walters) Patzner. Adam entered the United States Army and served in Panama.

Following his discharge, he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He later farmed on the family farm near Robinson, retiring at the age of 42.

Adam enjoyed farming and his very close friends in Robinson.

He is survived by two daughters, Velma Ellis, Enid, Okla., and JoAnn Patzner, Mandan; and one son, David, Hays, Kan.

Adam was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Delores. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Dwight Marvel
HUNTER -- Dwight E. Marvel, 79, Hunter, died Jan. 26, 1998, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at West Funeral Chapel, Casselton.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria; three sons, Richard, Hunter, Dale, West Fargo, and Mark, Bismarck; one daughter, Donna Hudson, Tucson, Ariz.; and one sister, Eleanor Griesbach, Hunter. (West Funeral Home, Casselton)

Alfred Borth
NEW ROCKFORD -- Alfred Borth, 87, New Rockford, died Jan. 26, 1998, in a New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Calvary Baptist Church, Carrington. Burial will be in Carrington Cemetery.

He is survived by one son, Gaylen, New Rockford; and six sisters, Elsie Davis, Keizer, Ore., Tillie Hamby, Prineville, Ore., Clara Overby, Belgrade, Mont., Viola Baillif, Salem, Ore., Ruby Gray, San Marcos, Calif., and Leona Thompson, Indianapolis, Ind. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Ervin Hill
Ervin G. Hill, 80, Fort Mojave, Ariz., and formerly of Bismarck, died Jan. 6, 1998, in a Needles, Calif., hospital. Services were held on Jan. 10, 1998, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Bullhead City, Ariz. Burial was in Desert Lawn Memorial Gardens, Mohave Valley, Ariz.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; three daughters, Constance Hill, Mill City, Ore., Sandra Settler, Fort Mojave, and Corrine Munn, Cheyenne, Wyo.; one son, Gerald, Traverse City, Mich.; and two sisters, Gladys Hill, Mondovi, Wis., and Laverne Mitmoen, Mesa, Ariz. Marion Colton
WHITE EARTH -- Marion Colton, 93, White Earth, died Jan. 26, 1998, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, south of Tioga. Burial will be in Churchyard Cemetery.

She is survived by one sister, Martha Hove, Tioga. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Matt Auwinger
HAZEN -- Matt Auwinger, 90, Hazen, died Jan. 27, 1998, in a Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Richard Schuler
Richard A. Schuler, 34, Phoenix, Ariz., died Jan. 26, 1998, in Phoenix. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Robert Anderson
WILLISTON -- Robert G. Anderson, 44, Williston, died Jan. 25, 1998, in a Minot hospital. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at Mandan Union Cemetery. A memorial service will be 3-30 p.m. Friday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston, with the Rev. Mark Gorveatte officiating.

Robert was born July 27, 1953, in Bismarck, the son of George I. and Mildred (Dawson) Anderson. He moved to Williston with his family in 1955. Robert worked at the Shelter Workshop with the Opportunity Foundation.

The family wishes to thank all the people and organizations including St. Joseph's School in Williston, the Athletic Department of Williston High School and Williston area businesses and the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, Kan., who helped him while he was at home and at the Opportunity Foundation.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Leonard Berglund Jr.; his nephew, Leonard III, and his wife Karen; and his niece, Genevieve, all of Columbus, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Opportunity Foundation, Williston. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Christena Bender
JAMESTOWN -- Christena Bender, 84, Jamestown, died Jan. 28, 1998, in Jamestown. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

She is survived by one son, Calvin, Valley City; four brothers, Willie Lachenmeier, Napoleon, Johnny Lachenmeier, Cleveland, Art Lachenmeier, Tappen, and August Lachenmeier, Harden, Mont.; and two sisters, Edna Bender and Ella Guthmiller, both of Jamestown. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Virginia Boeckl
Virginia "Mickey" Boeckl, 70, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died Jan. 14, 1998, in Michigan. Services were held on Jan. 17 at St. Thomas Moore Church, Bloomfield Hills.

Virginia Murrey was born Sept. 12, 1927, the daughter of Stanley and Agnes (Partyke) Murrey. She graduated from Bismarck High School and from nursing school in Milwaukee. On May 29, 1954, she married William Boeckl.

She is survived by her husband, William, Bloomfield Hills; one daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Mark Thomas, Troy, Mich.; one son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Joanna Boeckl, Bloomfield Hills; two grandchildren, Brian and Lindsay Boeckl, Bloomfield Hills; two brothers, Duane, Hayden, Idaho, and Jerry, Regan; four sisters, Sister Michaela Murrey, Eau Clair, Wis., Donna Mautz, Garrison, and Delores Murrey and Elbie Matthiesen, both of Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and three brothers.

Donald Friedland
Donald R. Friedland, 63, Brooklyn Park, Minn., died Jan. 27, 1998. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 19 years, Victoria (Leingang); his children, Gregory and Coreena, Ham Lake, Minn., Debra Oleson, Fridley, Minn., 4-year-old Francesca, Brooklyn Park; one granddaughter, Sierra Skye Friedland; two brothers and three sisters, mother and father-in-law, Frank and Eileen Leingang, Bismarck, Frank and Adele Leingang, Laurie and George Mahrer, Arnold and Lori Leingang, Clarice and Bill Kesler, George and Rhonda Solen, and Angela and Jeff Tweeten; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Cora Friedland; and one sister, Eileen Fait. (Hellen-VanZant Chapel, Brooklyn Park, Minn.)
