MCCLUSKY -- Roy Swendsen, 78, McClusky, died May 18, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Virginia Hulm, 62, 338 N. 31st St., Bismarck, died May 18, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

The Rev. Charles Rudd
JAMESTOWN -- The Rev. Charles Richard Rudd, 70, Jamestown, died April 25, 1998, in Mexico City, Mexico. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.

Visitation will begin one hour before services at the church. A prayer service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Charles Richard Rudd was born Feb. 22, 1928, at St. Paul, Minn., the son of Leonard and Theresa (Hamm) Rudd. He moved to Jamestown with his family in 1929. Following the deaths of their spouses, Theresa married Ben Miller, and they made Jamestown their home.

Richard was educated at St. John's Academy, Jamestown, until the 10th grade. At that time he entered St. John's High School, Collegeville, Minn., as a predivinity student, graduating in 1946. He entered the seminary at St. John's University, Collegeville, graduating in 1954. His ordination to the priesthood took place on May 1, 1954, at Fargo.

During the following years he served many parishes, including assistant at Rugby (1954); assistant at St. Catherine's in Valley City (1954-1956); assistant at Langdon (1956-1959); pastor at Berlin (1959-1967); chaplain at St. Francis Convent and department head of religion at the Academy in Hankinson (1967-1969); pastor at St. John's Church, Kensal (1969-1971); pastor at Langdon, Milton, Nekoma and Osnabrock (1971-1980); pastor at Cooperstown (1980-1983); pastor at Oriska, Buffalo and Fingal (1983-1990); and pastor at Hillsboro (1990-1997). He retired on July 1, 1997, due to major surgery. Following his recovery he again became a resident of Jamestown.

He is survived by his sister, Glory Ebertz, Jamestown; nieces and nephews and their spouses, Elizabeth and Keith Herner, Puyallup, Wash., Christopher and Yvonne, Bismarck, Ann Johnson, Burnsville, Minn., Peter and Denise, Wasilla, Alaska, Paul and Veronica, Phoenix, Patrick, Bloomington, Minn., and Dr. Michael, Bloomington; one stepsister and her husband, Kathryn and Dick Ross, Shorewood, Wis.; three aunts, Dolores Romer and Leona Hamm, both of Jamestown, and Cele Fredricks, Maryville, Wash.; 13 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; and his brother-in-law, John Ebertz.

Father Richard was a member of Knights of Columbus. In 1997 he was recognized for his contribution and service in manifesting and forwarding the course of Christian unity. He was then chosen to receive the 1997 North Dakota Conference of Churches Award for Ecumenical Achievement.

The family prefers memorials to the Johnny Ebertz Scholarship FACE Fund or a fund of the donor's choice.

John Hawkins
STEELE -- John Buchanan Hawkins, 82, Golden Manor, Steele, died April 29, 1998, in the nursing home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Golden Manor Nursing Home Chapel, Steele, with the Rev. Terry Martin officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery, Robinson, with military rites by Wing-Tuttle Color Guard.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m.-noon Monday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, and will continue at the nursing home one hour before services.

John was born Dec. 31, 1915, on a farm 12 miles northeast of Carrington. He was the son of John William and Annabelle (Weed) Hawkins. He married Esther Thompson, Aug. 31, 1970. John farmed near Robinson until April 1942, when he entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in India and China, assigned to the Y-Force under Brig. Gen. Frank Dorn. He served with a medical unit near the French Indo-China border and advanced down the Burma Road as far as the Salween River. He later served as a cook. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon with the Bronze Star and the American Theater Service Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

John returned to farming in the Robinson area and worked many years for Coral Hagseth and Dave Cook. John and Esther retired in Pettibone where he gardened and raised chickens and rabbits. After John's illness, they moved to the Golden Manor in Steele, where Esther still resides.

John is survived by his wife, Esther; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Audrey and Paul Geringer, Lake Williams, Christie Guthmiller, Palermo, and Donna and Duane Knudson, Sawyer; one son and daughter-in-law, Delbert and Sylvia Thompson, Wheatland, Wyo.; five sisters, Aleitha Dennis, Portland, Ore., Annabel Foster, Prosser, Wash., Wilma Bertsch, Robinson, Audrey Stechler and Ethel Burry, both of Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Marie David
PICK CITY -- Marie J. David, 87, Pick City, died April 29, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

Marie Janet was born Jan. 28, 1911, at Devils Lake, to Malcolm and Annie J. (Hintgen) Mathewson. She was raised and attended school in Tokio. As a young woman she operated a soda fountain and ice cream shop in Page. She married Arling Walleen, June 18, 1934, at Page. He died in 1938. She married Clare W. David, July 30, 1941, at Linton. They lived in Bismarck. He died in 1984. She moved to Pick City and everybody called her "Grandma." She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church for many years.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph J. and Helen Walleen, Pick City, and Ronald C. and Rosemary David, Hazelton; one sister, Evelyn Blinkenberg, Watsonville, Calif.; one brother, George Mathewson, Spur, Texas; seven grandchildren, Ronald David, Salt Lake City, Jeffrey David, Hazelton, Pamela David Aberle, McKenzie, Michael, Joe Jr., and Lee and Ellen Walleen, all of Pick City; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both her husbands; and an infant son.

Arthur Graves
JAMESTOWN -- Arthur M. Graves, 90, Jamestown, died April 29, 1998, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, with burial in Pingree Cemetery.

He is survived by two daughters, Eleanor Dunwoodie, Jamestown, and Delores Johnson, Fargo; two sons, Gerald, Hoodsport, Wash., and Leonard, Jamestown; three sisters, Edna McPherson, Jamestown, Louise Stinson, Santa Paula, Calif., and Doris Cook, Boise, Idaho; and one brother, Ernest, Freeland, Wash.

Kolten Hurley
WILLISTON -- Kolten Wade Hurley, the infant son of Wade and Twila Hurley, Williston, died April 25, 1998, in the Minot hospital. Private services will be held today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Buford, with burial in Buford Cemetery.

He is survived by his parents; one brother, Ethan; his grandparents, Dennis and Yvonne Hurley, Buford, Judy Kummer, Williston, and David Kummer, Watford City; and his great-grandfather, Elmer Abell, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Geraldine Vigil
TWIN BUTTES -- Geraldine Norma Vigil, 77, Twin Buttes, died April 29, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall, with burial in Red Butte Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Gerald Nagel, New Town, and John Vigil Jr., Poway, Calif.; daughters, Lillian Holen, Twin Buttes, and Janice Vigil, Twin Buttes; and one brother, Wilbur Nagel, Twin Buttes. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Joseph Grossman
ESMOND -- Joseph Grossman, 78, Esmond, died April 29, 1998, in the Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes; one daughter, Vickie Axtman, Esmond; five sons, Marvin, Ronald and Daniel, all of Esmond, and Gary and Bryan, both of Bismarck; and one sister, Mary Ludwig, Minot. (Nelson Funeral Home, Esmond)

Thelma Daniel
CARRINGTON -- Thelma Daniel, 95, Carrington, died April 26, 1998, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, with burial in Sykeston Cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Myrle Mauch, Merritt Island, Fla., Alberta Hornung, Pettibone, and Bonnie Daniel, St. Paul, Minn. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Howard Barke
DONNYBROOK -- Howard Barke, 77, Wickenburg, Ariz., formerly of Donnybrook, died April 19, 1998, in Wickenburg. Burial will be in Donnybrook at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, Louella; one daughter, Virginia Flegel, Kelso, Wash.; one son, Randall, Gold Beach, Ore.; and one brother, Christie, Fargo. (Fry Funeral Home, Wickenburg)

Howard Schlenker
HAZEN -- Howard Dale Schlenker, 52, Hazen, died April 29, 1998, in Rapid City, S.D. of natural causes. Services will be held at 9 a.m. MDT today, at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Revs. Walt Wolff and Duane Hanson officiating. Burial will be in the Max Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. CDT today.

Serving as pallbearers will be Howard's nephews, Todd Mikkelson, Mark Jamtgaard, Joel Jamtgaard, Randy Schlenker, Richard Schock and Glenn Schreiner.

Howard was born on Dec. 6, 1945, in Minot, a son of Ruben and Hulda (Hummel) Schlenker. He grew up in Max and in 1965, he joined the Army National Guard, receiving his honorable discharge in 1971. On Feb. 28, 1966, he married Linda Mikkelson in Washburn. He was involved with Amoco Service Stations for over 35 years. Howard was employed with Mel Roth Oil Company, Hazen, at the time of his death.

Howard enjoyed collecting various Amoco Standard products and Tonka toys for many years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; three daughters and sons-in-law, Tina and Noial Kauk, Bismarck, Claudette and Don Bertsch, Rapid City, and Jennette and Brad McLaughlin, Hazen; three grandchildren, Shanwia Kauk, Kayla Bertsch and Bryon McLaughlin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Ellie, Berthoud, Colo., and Arthur and Lois Schlenker, Anoka, Minn.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Ted Schock, Grand Forks, Gertrude and Cletus Schreiner, Garrison, Gladys and Whitey Jamtgaard, Wheatland, Wyo., and Phyllis and Joe Duarte, Carmichael, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

John Harms
John Harms, 87, Bismarck, died April 29, 1998, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dr. Larry L. Hickle officiating.

A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at Bismarck Funeral Home.

John was born Feb. 3, 1911, in Burleigh County, the son of Tebbo and Tina (Craven) Harms. He married Beverly Boelter on Sept. 6, 1942, in Bismarck. John was one of the owners of Arrowhead Hardware and later employed by the North Dakota State Highway Department. He retired in 1976.

John was a member of the Masonic Order.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly; one son and daughter-in-law, John R. and Lauren, Astoria, Ore.; one daughter and son-in-law, LCDR Nancy Harms and Bill Holmes, Naples, Italy; two grandchildren, Mary and her husband, Tom Grebner, and Sheri and her husband, Rick Palek; and one sister, Mrs. Clark Monroe, Vancouver, Wash.

He was preceded in death by one infant daughter; his parents; three brothers and four sisters.

She is survived by one son, Gerald, Carrington; one daughter, Jane Kulla, Kensal; and two sisters, Jennie Stuart, Denton, Texas, and Bergit Hambleton, Camas, Wash. (Evans Funeral Home, Carrington)

Mabel Miller
RHAME -- Mabel D. Miller, Rhame, died April 30, 1998, in a Bowman nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday, at Bowman Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Bowman Cemetery.
