Paul Heinrich
Paul Heinrich, 76, 502 Ninth Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Oct. 23, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10-30 a.m. Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary celebrant with the Rev. Hugo Blotsky, OSB, and the Rev. William Fahnlander. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughter's rosary will be said at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Paul was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Solen, N.D., the son of Sebastian and Barbara (Aspenliter) Heinrich. He grew up on a farm near Solen. On Oct. 21, 1941, he married Bertha Schaff at Odense, N.D. They farmed near Odense for two years before purchasing a farm at Huff, N.D. Paul raised Angus cattle on that farm until moving to Mandan in 1977. During his semi-retired years, he loved to go to the farm to repair fence and maintain the buildings. He also enjoyed going fishing. Other sources of great joy were dancing and playing pinochle.

He was a lifetime member of Bismarck Eagles Club.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha, Mandan; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Bette and Dave Poppers, Littleton, Colo., Judi and Preston Bankhead, La Mesa, Calif., and Jo Ann Peltier, Mandan; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Dennis, Spokane, Wash., and Danny and Diana, Littleton; 11 grandchildren, Scott and Jennifer Poppers, Tayla Czakowski, Corey Meisch, Tammy, Shelly and Leon Heinrich, Juan Peltier, and Ben, Nick and Andy Heinrich; five great-grandchildren, Joshua and Lonnie Czakowski, and Stephen, Camariah and Shania Heinrich; one brother, Nick, Mandan; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Sister Amelia Heinrich, Mount Angel, Ore., and Barbara and Matt Geiger, Mandan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Dion Heinrich; one brother, George; and one sister, Margaret Olheiser.

The family prefers memorials to the American Heart Association.

Eugene Pinks
Eugene John Pinks, 62, southeast of Bismarck, a longtime heavy equipment operator in the Bismarck area, died of heart failure Oct. 23, 1996, doing what he loved to do best -- fishing!

He was born May 18, 1934, in Bismarck, to the late Elizabeth (Jahner) and William Pinks. Eugene married Leona Feist Sept. 17, 1953, and they shared many happy years camping, fishing, horseback riding, gardening, watching and caring for birds and caring for all the animals on their hobby farm.

He is survived by those who were honored to share their lives with him, his beloved wife, Leona; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Eugene and Linda, Bismarck, Jeff and Nyla, Lincoln, Paul and Karla, Bismarck, and David, Hopkins, Minn.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Keith Fiechtner, Bismarck, Karla and Pat Evans, Parker, S.D., Janet and Charlie Miller, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Mary and Allan Heid, Bismarck; two brothers, Richard, Melbourne, Fla., and Lester, Trenton, Mich.; one sister, Darlene Ellis, Mandan; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many beloved family members and friends; his fishing buddies; and his dog, Klicks.

George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and Gerald; and one sister, Delores.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation is ongoing at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a rosary and vigil will be held at 6 p.m. tonight. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

George Landeis
DICKINSON -- George H. Landeis, 79, Dickinson, died Oct. 23, 1996, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. Pete Kramer officiating. Music will be provided by JoAnn Decker, cantor, and Judy Champa, organist. Burial with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Monday, at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Valley City.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, where a prayer service will be at 7 p.m.

George H. Landeis was born May 12, 1917, at St. Vincent, N.D., to Henry and Rosa (Yantzer) Landeis. He was raised on the family farm in Oliver County. He served in the United States Army Infantry from Feb. 25, 1942, to Dec. 30, 1944. Most of his service was in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands, where he served with bravery and distinction as a squad leader. He earned the rank of sergeant and was decorated for his combat service. George was always very proud of his military service record and his country.

After his separation from military service, George returned to the family farm. He married Irene Boehm Nov. 8, 1948, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. They purchased their own farm and began their family. In 1957 the family moved to Valley City, where George worked as a diesel mechanic for Geisler Implement until his retirement in 1982. His wife passed away in 1975.

On Jan. 17, 1981, George married Martha Zentner of Mott. They had resided in Dickinson since 1985. George was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Eagles. He enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Martha, Dickinson; two sons and one daughter-in-law, James, Fargo, and Mark and Elizabeth, Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Delores and David Tarbell, Jamestown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Kathy, Glendora, Calif., and Henry and Helen, Litchfield Park, Ariz.; one sister and brother-in-law, Cae and Pete Knoll, Sun City, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, Jacob Braun, Bismarck; four grandchildren; six stepchildren; 27 step-grandchildren; and 36 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; one brother, Edward; one sister, Beatta Braun; two sisters-in-law; and four brothers-in-law.

The family prefers memorials sent to Dakota Boys Ranch Foundation, Rural Route 6, Minot, N.D., 58701.

Ruth Johnson
WILLISTON -- Ruth T. Johnson, 79, Williston, died Oct. 23, 1996, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

She is survived by her husband, Martin, Williston; three daughters, Hilda Burgess, West Allis, Wis., Marie Lowis, Sidney, Mont., and Doris Slocum, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; two sons, Duane, New Town, and Marvin, Coeur d'Alene; and one brother, Einar Jensen, Apache Junction, Ariz. Michael Brehm
Michael Brehm, 32, Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Jamestown, died Oct. 22, 1996, in Lincoln. A private service will be held.

Michael was born Feb. 28, 1964, in Medina, N.D., the son of Richard and Frieda (Hofer) Brehm. He grew up and attended grade school in Jamestown Public Schools and graduated from Buchanan High School. He attended Valley City State College and Mary College in Bismarck. He married Michelle McNamara in 1983 at New Town. He lived in Bismarck for a time doing professional work and accounting. He lived in Texas, before moving to Lincoln, where he owned and operated a Donut Shop.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Frieda Brehm, Jamestown; one daughter, Tesha Brehm, Bismarck; ex-wife, Michelle Brehm, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Debbie Brehm, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hedy and Bruce Gallagher, Jamestown, and Debra and John Ramsey, Santa Rosa, Calif.; and his grandmother, Emma Hofer, Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather; and his paternal grandparents. (Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Rose Leingang, 91, St. Vincent's Nursing Home, Bismarck, died Oct. 24, 1996, in the nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Wilma Snow
Wilma K. Snow, 69, 619 E. Interstate Ave., Bismarck, died Oct. 23, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Frances Frison
HAGUE -- Frances Frison, 102, Hague, died Oct. 24, 1996, in the Linton hospital. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

John Skari
John W. Skari, 90, 1502 Second Ave. N.W., Mandan, died Oct. 24, 1996, in the Mandan hospital. Arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Dennis Standing Bear
CANNON BALL -- Dennis Sherman Standing Bear, 32, Cannon Ball, died Oct. 11, 1997, in a Fort Yates health center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Cannon Ball School Gym, with the Revs. Casimir Paluck and Leonard Savelkoul officiating. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery, Cannon Ball.

A wake service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, at the school gym, where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m.

Dennis was born at Fort Yates, N.D., to Evelyn Marie Eagle and Sherman Standing Bear. He was raised at Cannon Ball, and educated at Cannon Ball and Solen High School. Dennis had many interests including basketball, softball and Indian dancing. He enjoyed being with his friends. He was a friendly guy who shared a handshake with all he greeted. He was a fan for his uncles' and cousins' softball teams and also enjoyed horseshoe tournaments.

He is survived by one daughter, Stacey Chapman, Bismarck; two sons, Shawn and Maurice Standing Bear, both of Cannon Ball; a special friend, Lois Little Bird, Cannon Ball; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Ava and Wilbur Red Tomahawk, Porcupine, and Donna Two Bears, and Debbie and Thomasine Standing Bear, all of Cannon Ball; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Evette Eagle Jr., Don and Carmen Two Bears, and Sherman Standing Bear Jr., all of Cannon Ball; 15 nieces and nephews; his grandmothers, Annie Thunder Hawk, Cannon Ball, Lenore Red Elk, Poplar, Mont., and Josie Barrett, Fort Yates; his aunts and uncles, Herman and Betty Elk, and Don and Darlene Medicine Horse, all of Fort Yates, Butch Thunder Hawk, Bismarck, John and Michelle Thunder Hawk Sr., Alma Thunder Hawk, George and Jewel Thunder Hawk Sr., Mike and Jeanette Thunder Hawk Sr., Bernetta Thunder Hawk, Albert Two Shields Sr., Earl and Joan Standing Bear, Norman and Phyllis Conica, and Marlon and Rita Hunte, all of Cannon Ball, and Gordon and Patricia Elk, and Bernadine Standing Bear, all of Fort Yates; as well as many cousins and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn Marie Eagle and Sherman Standing Bear Sr.; his grandparents, Wallace Thunder Hawk Sr., Gerald Red Elk and Clifford and Elsie Standing Bear; and two sisters, Sherrie and Mary Standing Bear.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, his children, brothers, sisters, relatives and all his friends.

Dennis will suffer no more. He will no longer roam. He will be home in his Mother's arms. All his tears will be wiped away and he'll still have that greatest smile that touched a lot of hearts! Don't worry, we'll be here for your children and watch them grow. We love you and we know you're in a better place. So until we meet again, bye for now...

Donald Hinkle
Donald L. Hinkle, 73, 1111 N. First St., Bismarck, died Oct. 13, 1997, at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at United Church of Christ, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Moos officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military rites provided by VFW Post 1326.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services, at the church.

Donald was born July 25, 1924, at Columbus, Ind., to Raymond and Mabel (Snyder) Hinkle. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1942 and entered the United States Army in 1942, serving in Europe. He was discharged in January of 1946. He then attended Purdue University at Lafayette, Ind. and received a bachelor of science degree in electronic engineering in 1949.

Don worked as an engineer in Indiana from 1949-1957, and for the United States government from 1957-1962, during which time he moved to North Dakota. He also worked as a consulting engineer in Billings, Mont., from 1962-1966, and returned to Bismarck in 1966. He then opened an office for Finley Engineering Co. in Bismarck and was manager and vice president of the Bismarck department until retirement in December of 1989. He married LaVon Freborg, Feb. 14, 1992 in Bismarck.

He was a member of United Church of Christ, serving as trustee, deacon, and on the building committee, and Bismarck Elks Lodge. He was a member of Lewis and Clark Lodge 132, Scottish Rite and El Zagal Temple. He was a member of El Zagal Oilers and served as president in 1984. He also served as president of Western Council of Units and Clubs, Master of Lewis and Clark Lodge 132, worked in the Shrine Circus Management, and was Circus chairman from 1992-1993.

He is survived by his wife, LaVon; one daughter, Janet Cannon, Jeffersonville, Ind.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cheryl, Georgetown, Ind., and Bob and Carolyn, Eagan, Minn.; one sister, Marilyn Thompson, Kettering, Ohio; four stepchildren, Carmen Reno, Bismarck, Mark Freborg, Birmingham, Ala., Gwen Kendall, Santa Maria, Calif., and Linda Kessler, Redding, Calif.; and many grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two wives.

Ann Jacobson
Ann Marie (Hummel) Jacobson, 33, Springtown, Texas, died Oct. 10, 1997, at her place of employment, of a heart condition. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at White's Funeral Home Chapel, Springtown, with the Rev. Darren Walker officiating. Burial will be in Annis Chapel Cemetery, Wise County, Texas.

Ann was born March 26, 1964, at Turtle Lake, N.D., to Alvin and Elaine (Thompson) Hummel. She lived on a farm near Coleharbor, N.D. until she was 6 years old. Her family moved to Bismarck, where she was raised and educated. She graduated in 1981 from Bismarck High School. Ann was employed at St. Vincent's Nursing Home in Bismarck until 1983, when she moved to Fort Worth, Texas. She started employment at USPA & IRA and was an employee there for 14 years. Ann advanced to a supervising position in 1993. She married James (Jim) Jacobson in 1990 and they resided in Springtown.

Ann was a devoted, giving and cheerful person and above all things, she treasured and loved her children. She was actively involved in Neighbor to Neighbors of Springtown, High School Rodeo Club, Cub Scouts and Karate.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; one daughter, Sarah, Springtown; one son, Shane, Springtown; one stepson, Randy, North Dakota; her parents, Alvin and Elaine Hummel, Springtown; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Shawn and Pam Hummel, Fort Worth, and Daniel (Danny) and Raynell Hummel, Springtown; a special friend, Sharon Kaiser, Bismarck, (from First Grade); many nephews, including Travis Klenert and Austin Hummel, both of Fort Worth; many nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins; and many friends from all over.

Johanna Nelsen
Funeral services for Johanna Christine Nelsen, 103, Aberdeen, S.D., were held Oct. 8, at First United Methodist Church, Aberdeen. She died Oct. 5, 1997, in an Aberdeen nursing home.

Johanna Christine Christensen was born Feb. 8, 1894, to Jens and Margarethe (Mortensen) Christensen at Crystal Lake, Ill. She moved with her family to North Dakota, first to the Red River Valley area, where she attended school at Arthur, and then to a farm near New England.

She married Thomas C. Nelsen, June 30, 1911 at Mott. They established their homestead along the Cannonball River in Slope County near New England. In 1922, they moved to the Aberdeen area, where he worked for the M and St. L Railroad at Richmond. He died in 1955. She moved to Aberdeen in the fall of 1960, and worked part time in the Pink Pantry at St. Luke's Hospital. She became a resident of Bethesda Home in February 1991.

Survivors include four sons and two daughters-in-law, Leslie, Frostproof, Fla., T. Clarence and Dorothy, Naples, Fla., Mark and Geneva, Bismarck, and Wayne, Lake Andes, S.D.; one daughter, Margaret N. Maynard, Aberdeen; 14 grandchildren, including two grandsons, Gov. Ed Schafer and Tom Nelsen, both of Bismarck, and two granddaughters, Virginia Nelsen and Haroldeen Heskin, both of Bismarck; three step-grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, including one great-granddaughter, Katie Halloran, Bismarck; and six step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son and one daughter.

Brother Bernard Vogel
MANDAREE -- Brother Bernard Vogel OSB, 71, Mandaree, died Oct. 12, 1997, in Dickinson. Services will be held at 11 a.m. CDT Wednesday at St. Anthony Mission, Mandaree, with the Rev. Stephan Kranz OSB officiating; and at 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at Assumption Abbey Church, Richardton, with the Abbot Patrick Moore OSB officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Abbey Cemetery, Richardton.

Wake services will be held at 5 p.m. CDT today at St. Anthony Mission; and 7 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Assumption Abbey Church.

Casketbearers will be the Benedictine Monks of Assumption Abbey.

Bernard was born Oct. 16, 1926 at Hillsview, S.D., the son of John E. and Elizabeth (Ettel) Vogel. He was raised and educated in the Aberdeen, S.D. area. He came to Assumption Abbey in 1948. He professed his vows, July 11, 1949. Bernard worked at the Assumption Abbey School until 1969. For the past 25 years he has been at St. Anthony Mission at Mandaree.

He is survived by two brothers, Clement, Onaka, S.D., and Norbert, North Mankato, Minn.; five sisters, Sister Norbert Vogel OSB, Rapid City, S.D., Sister Zita Vogel OSM, Wheeling, Ill., Margaret Menzia, Aberdeen, Tillie Clark, Lavern, Minn., and Clara Keiffer, White Lake, S.D.; and the Brothers of Assumption Abbey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and one brother. (Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron)

Ann Pickreign
Ann Marie Holkup Pickreign, 87, Omaha, Neb., died Oct. 12, 1997, in Omaha. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4808 William St., Omaha, Neb. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, at Boyd E. Braman Mortuary, Omaha, with a wake service at 7 p.m.

Further services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wilton. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Wilton. Visitation will be one prior to services, at the church.

Anna was born June 4, 1909 in McClusky, N.D., the daughter of Joe and Helen (Doris) Holkup.

She is survived by one son, Robert L. Pickreign, Omaha; one brother, James Holkup, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three sisters, Helen Walsh, Bismarck, Lucille Petersen, Hot Spring, Ariz., and Elizabeth Holkup, Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leeroy; two brothers, Joe and John; and one sister, Marian. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Sam Kanski
FAIRFIELD -- Sam Kanski, 78, Fairfield, died Oct. 9, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services were held Oct. 13, at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Kenneth and Kevin, both of Fairfield; one daughter, Kathy Ceynar, Williston; five brothers, Harry, Dickinson, Nick, Fairfield, Steve, Lake Havasu, Ariz., Brother John, Newark, N.J., and Fred, St. Paul, Minn.; and five sisters, Josephine Klym, Dickinson, Ann Basaraba, Fairfield, Helen Malkowski, Pinedale, Wyo., Betty Haverluk, Richland, Wash., and Sister Rose Kanski, Sloatsburg, N.Y. Jesse Lindley
NEW TOWN -- Jesse R. Lindley, 18, New Town, died Oct. 11, 1997, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in New Town. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at New Town High School, with burial in Sanish Riverview Cemetery.

He is survived by his parents, Barb Baker and Larry D. Lindley Sr., both of New Town; one sister, Joni Lindley, New Town; four brothers, Larry S. Lindley Jr., and James, Justin and Kelly Baker, all of New Town; and his grandparents, Aletha Jackson, Delores Sand and Victoria Lindley, all of New Town. (Johnson Funeral Home, New Town)

GRASSY BUTTE -- Lee S. Trotter, 70, Grassy Butte, died Oct. 6, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services were held Oct. 11 at First Presbyterian Church, Watford City, with burial in Grassy Butte Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Katharyn; four daughters, Sharon Unruh, Zap, Tamara Malo, Beulah, and Vicky Brandvik and Diane Berg, both of Killdeer; two sons, Don and Joe, both of Grassy Butte; one brother, John, British Columbia, Calif.; and three sisters, Doris Murray and Margaret Kries, both of Hudson, Mont., and Pearl Willis, Dunkin, Ariz.
