Rueben Hummel
GARRISON -- Rueben G. Hummel, 80, Garrison, died Oct. 11, 1996, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery, with military rites by Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post No. 49, Garrison.

Visitation will be 4-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

He was born Aug. 30, 1916, at Coleharbor, to Gottlieb and Emily (Flath) Hummel, and grew up on his parents farm five miles north of Coleharbor, where he attended rural school. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Kenmare prior to entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a tank driver stationed in the Plow Islands near the Phillipines.

Following his discharge in 1945, he married Sophie Talarski on Dec. 1, 1945, at Miles City, Mont. They moved to the farm north of Coleharbor and farmed there until 1949, when they sold their land to the Corps of Engineers as part of Lake Audubon and moved to Garrison. He worked for Bayer Brothers Garage as a mechanic until they closed. He was then employed as a mechanic for Wretling Chevrolet for many years until his retirement.

He was a member of the Hugh P. Minehan American Legion Post of Garrison, the VFW Post in Minot, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Square Dance and Round Dance Clubs in Minot, and an honorary member of the Garrison Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Sophie; one son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Linda, Underwood; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Eugene Blumhardt, Fargo; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Albert, Apache Junction, Ariz.; and three sisters, Martha Mummert, Lilly Sletten and Violet Fredericks, all of Garrison.

Honorary pallbearers will be the active and honorary members of the Garrison Fire Department.

Oscar Forde Jr.
Oscar Ted Forde Jr., 71, Denver and Colorado Springs, Colo., died Oct. 10, 1996, in Denver. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Fairmount Mortuary, Denver, with burial in Fairmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Oscar was born Sept. 8, 1925, at Dickinson, the son of Oscar T. and Elsa Forde Sr. He graduated from Bismarck High School in 1943, and from the University of North Dakota in 1949. He attended Jamestown College for two years and University of Chicago for one year. He received a masters degree in business administration from the University of Colorado -- Colorado Springs. He married Lynn Biniris in June 1952 in St. Louis, Mo. He worked as a financial officer for Colorado Interstate Gas Corp., Woodmoor Corp, J.D. Adams Co., Golden Cycle, and Kaman Instrumentation. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army and served in Italy during World War II.

He was a longtime member of the Widefield School District No. 3 School Board, and a volunteer worker for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. He was honored as that chapter's Volunteer of the Year in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn; three sons, Tim, Montevideo, Minn., Mike, Cave Creek, Ariz., and Pat, Louisville, Ky.; and two sisters, Betty Dockrey, Bismarck, and Nancy Sheets, Bowman.

William Skjerven
PARK RIVER -- William C. ``Bill" Skjerven, 73, Park River, died Oct. 12, 1996, in the Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Park River, with the Rev. Daniel Kordahl officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Tollefson Funeral Home, Park River, where a prayer service will be held at 7 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.

William C. ``Bill" Skjerven was born May 29, 1923, in Grafton, the son of William C. and Gunna (Thorsteinson) Skjerven. He graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River and attended one year of college at North Dakota State University in Fargo. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II for four years and attained the rank of captain. He also served in the Army Reserves for 12 years, and was a member of American Legion in Park River for 50 years.

Following active duty, he returned to Park River and started the Airport and Flying Service in 1947. He was one of the pioneers in aerial dusting and spraying and was in the aerial spray business for 25 years. He married Margrete Meberg, daughter of David and Alice (Flaten) Meberg, Jan. 4, 1947, in Park River. They went on their honeymoon in a two-place Taylor Craft Airplane. He was a partner of S.K.M. Television and owner of Skjerven's Garage. He served as representative of the 16th District in the North Dakota House of Representatives for four terms from 1985-1992.

He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Park River. Bill had a lifetime commitment to community service. His activities included service on the Park River City Council, the Airport Authority and Park River Park Board. He served for 25 years on the Board of St. Ansgar's Hospital, including service as chairman. He also served on the Walsh County Planning and Zoning Commission, Park River Volunteer Fire Department, Park River Curling Club, Library Board, VFW, AMVETS, Lions Club, Commercial Club and American Legion Speakers Bureau. He was also chairman of the Park River Centennial Committee. Bill had many hobbies, including silver jewelry making and wood carving.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Margrete; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Caryn, Crystal Lake, Ill.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dawne and Jerry Renner, and Teresa and Tom Chase, all of Bismarck, Ann and Dan Noble, Dallas, and Wendy Skjerven and Randy Gegelman, Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; one brother, Richard, Los Gatos, Calif.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna Lou and Blair Chapman, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Leatrice and James McGuigan, Whitehall, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Jo Smith
Mary Jo Smith, 72, 912 E. Owens Ave., died Oct. 10, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Monday.

Mary Jo was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Cleveland, the daughter of Joseph and Mayme (Casey) Gergen. She was educated in the liberal arts at University of Washington, and in 1948 married Dwight M. Smith. She returned to North Dakota where she worked for a number of years for North Dakota State Highway Patrol. She retired in 1971. That same year she assumed co-ownership of Arrowhead Plaza Shopping Center in Bismarck. Mary Jo remained active in the Bismarck community. She helped found the North Dakota Heritage Center. She was also very involved with St. Mary's Central High School Alumni Association until her death. She was a staunch supporter of Catholic education, including the University of Mary. Through the years, she was immeasurably devoted as a mother, and dedicated to her family.

She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, JeAnne Fogarty, Lafayette, Ind., and Judith and John Young, Ormond Beach, Fla.; two grandsons, Errol Fogarty, Pensacola, Fla., and Phineas Fogarty, Tallahassee, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mayme Casey Gergen and Joseph Jacob Gergen; and her uncle, T. Clem Casey.

Give her a share in what her hands have worked for, and let her works tell her praises at the city gates. (Proverbs 31-31)

Francis Schwab
RICHARDTON -- Francis ``Frank" B. Schwab, 74, Richardton, died Oct. 11, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with the Rev. Brian Wangler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be 2:30-9 p.m. today at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will continue from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, and 4-9 p.m. Monday at the church. A rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Monday at the church.

Further arrangements are pending.

Raymond Scheetz
Raymond Scheetz, 60, 1943 N. 20th St., died Oct. 12, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital after a lengthy battle with leukemia. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edward Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by VFW Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Monday. A vigil will follow.

Ray was born Aug. 23, 1936, in Mandan, the son of Mathias and Stella (Heinert) Scheetz. He was raised and educated in Oliver County, graduating from Center High School in 1954. Ray entered the U.S. Army in 1954, and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1956. After the Army, Ray went to Dickinson State University from 1957 to 1959. He then moved to Fargo and went to North Dakota State University. He graduated in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture.

Ray married Theresa Heinz Aug. 18, 1962, in St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center. They lived in Carson, Cooperstown and moved to Bismarck in 1970. Ray worked for Farmers Home Administration from 1962 until his retirement on May 3, 1996, as the rural development director.

Ray received several awards for his work. The latest was the Friends of Rural Water Award from North Dakota Water Users in 1996. He was a member of Center American Legion, Jaycees and Church of St. Anne in Bismarck. Ray loved spending time with his children. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, hunting, gardening and was an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dean and Denise, Beulah, Mark and Diana, Omaha, Neb., and Doug and Rhonda, Mandan; five grandchildren, Cameron, twins Holly and Heidi, Nicole and Kylie; one brother and sister-in-law, Wyman and Mary, Hensler; one sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Nick Halter, Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Donna Novotny
DRISCOLL -- Donna (Hanson) Novotny, 46, formerly of Driscoll, died Oct. 7, 1996, in her home in Burnsville, Minn. of cancer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church, Driscoll, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will begin at the church one hour before services.

Donna Jeanne Hanson was born Nov. 15, 1949, in Bismarck, the daughter of Donald and Mildred (Selland) Hanson. She was raised and educated in Driscoll. She also attended Jamestown College, graduating in 1971 with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Donna worked as a registered nurse in the Minneapolis area until the onset of her illness in 1995.

Donna enjoyed singing and playing in the bell choir at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Richfield, Minn. She was also active in the church music school.

She is survived by her husband, Roger; one daughter, Jennifer, Burnsville; her mother, Mildred Hanson, Bismarck; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Hanson.

Clayton Werner
Clayton Werner, 54, Phoenix, formerly of Bismarck, died Oct. 11, 1996, in Valley City. Arrangements are pending at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Myrtle Stuart
WILLISTON -- Myrtle Stuart, 93, Williston, died Oct. 1, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Faith United Methodist Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Robert Hague
LINTON -- Robert Hague, 63, Pollock, S.D., died Oct. 1, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Svava Flanagan
MOUNTAIN -- Svava Flanagan, 88, formerly of Mountain, died Oct. 2, 1996, in Bismarck. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pioneer Lutheran Church, Gardar, with burial in Gardar Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Dana McGurren, Bismarck; and one sister, Laura Strandness, East Lansing, Mich. (Tollefson Funeral Home, Edinburg)

Donna Kroshus
WILLISTON -- Donna Kroshus, 50, Williston, died Oct. 1, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Mary Score
HETTINGER -- Mary Score, 79, Hettinger, died Oct. 2, 1996, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with burial in Hettinger Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis; two sons, Ronald and Robert, both of Phoenix; and one sister, Pauline Ekberg, Great Falls, Mont. (Walby Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Mary Gisi
HARVEY -- Mary Gisi, 87, Harvey, died Sept. 30, 1996, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Harvey, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by four sons, Marvin, James and Leon, all of Harvey, and John, Phoenix; five daughters, Leah Gumeringer, Esmond, JoAnn Trom, Shoreview, Minn., Margaret Willard, Barnesville, Minn., Rita Doering, Minot, Mary Jane Lueck, Lidgerwood; and three sisters, Barbara Wiest, Lena Volk and Frances Meier, all of Harvey. Sam Blumhagen
MCCLUSKY -- Sam Blumhagen, 85, McClusky, died Sept. 30, 1996, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, McClusky, with burial in McClusky Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Sam was born June 3, 1911, on the family farm near Skogmo, north of McClusky, the son of Karl and Pauline (Bucholtz) Blumhagen. He grew up there and attended rural school. He lived and worked for several farmers in the Kief area for many years. He also worked for the Sheridan County Road Department for 22 years as a laborer. He moved into McClusky in 1981.

He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Fred, Bill, Christ, Art, Carl; and one sister, Bertha.

Leonard Ernst
KULM -- Leonard Ernst, 67, San Francisco, formerly of Kulm, died Sept. 25, 1996, in a San Rafael, Calif., nursing home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm, with burial in Kulm Congregational Cemetery.

He is survived by four sisters, Gladys Cardwell, Spokane, Wash., Mabel Dallman, Ellendale, Lilian Pfeifer, Valley City, and Pearl Timmerman, Wahpeton.

Matt Kuntz
HEBRON -- Matt Kuntz, 86, Hebron, died Oct. 2, 1996, in a Bismarck nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron.

John Kessel
BELFIELD -- John Kessel, 78, Belfield, died Oct. 3, 1996, near Belfield. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Belfield, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by 33 nephews and nieces and many great-nephews and nieces, including the family he had lived with since 1961, his nephew, Paul Kessel and his wife, Mildred, and their children, Donna Kessel Jackson and Jaun Jackson, Columbia, Md., Kathy and Wes Pepple, Williston, Frank and Teresa Kessel, Belfield, Joe and Tina Kessel, Belfield, Karen and James Gawryluk, Dickinson, and Paul Kessel Jr., Norfolk, Va.

Anna Pickar
NEW TOWN -- Anna Pickar, 93, Evanston, Wyo., formerly of New Town, died Sept. 25, 1996, in an Evanston nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Bethel Lutheran Church, New Town, with burial in New Town Cemetery.

Donna Kroshus
WILLISTON -- Donna Kroshus, 50, Williston, died Oct. 1, 1996, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Ambrose.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce; two sons, Darren, Williston, and Devin, Dallas, Texas; her mother, Emma Haugenoe, Crosby; two sisters, Elaine Kinstler, Crosby, and Nancy Burns, Milton, Wash.; and three brothers, Roger Haugenoe, Williston, Donald Haugenoe, Ambrose, and Douglas Haugenoe, Lovell, Wyo. Regina Wilson
Regina M. Wilson, 96, Minot, formerly of Bismarck, died Oct. 4, 1996, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

She is survived by one son, Charles, Benedict, Minn. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot)
