E. Vernon Sandstrom
FARGO -- E. Vernon Sandstrom, 76, Fargo, died Oct. 24, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, and will continue for one hour before services at the church.

Vern was born Dec. 12, 1920, at his parents' home in Grand Forks. He was the son of Frank C. Sandstrom and Eline A. (Rice) Sandstrom. His great grandparents homesteaded in the 1870s in what is now Grand Forks County. His father, a Swedish immigrant, had booked passage on the Titanic but decided not to wait and took and earlier ship. He was baptized and confirmed at United Lutheran Church. He attended Roosevelt Grade School and South Junior High School in Grand Forks. Most of eighth grade was spent at Will Junior High School in Bismarck, while his father was finishing foreman for building the new State Capitol. He graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1938, and entered the University of North Dakota.

On July 14, 1942, he entered active duty with the U.S. Army Air Corps. During World War II he served as photographer with the 49th Bomb Squadron, second Bomb Group (b-17 Flying Fortress's) in North Africa and Italy. A tech sergeant, he was discharged on Sept. 8, 1945. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1946, with a bachelor of science in the School of Commerce with a major in accounting.

On March 14, 1948, he married Hilde G. Williams at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. On Oct. 7, 1946, he joined Butler Construction Co. In 1965, the company became Butler Machinery Co., the Caterpillar dealer, and the family moved to Fargo.

He became the general manager, vice president and a member of the board of directors, and part owner of the company. He served as president of N.D. Equipment Distributors Association, as vice president and member of the board of directors of the Associated General Contractors of North Dakota, and on the board of directors of the North Dakota Ready Mix Association. After 34 years with the Butler companies, he retired at the end of 1980.

He served as trustee of Olivet Lutheran Church, and as its president in 1967. He was the senior member of the Fargo Cosmopolitan Club, having served as its president in 1964. A 46-year Mason, he was a member of Shiloh Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was active in the Republican Party, including serving as a state convention delegate for more than 30 years. He greatly enjoyed golf and his friends at the Fargo Country Club.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Hilde; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Scott, and his fiancee Debra Goldberg, Fargo, Justice Dale Sandstrom and Judge Gail Hagerty, Bismarck, and Craig and Julie, Fargo; seven grandchildren, John and Joel Sandstrom, Fargo, and Jack, Carrie and Anne Sandstrom, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Carlyle and Myrtle, Grand Forks; and one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Leo Wagner, Vista, Calif.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family prefers memorials to Cosmopolitan Diabetes Fund, or the Olivet Lutheran Church Radio Fund.

Gordon McAvoy
Gordon W. McAvoy, 82, 1119 S. University Drive, No. 202, died Oct. 23, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Bismarck. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery, with military rites provided by Bismarck VFW Post No. 1326. There will be no visitation.

Gordon was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Granite Falls, Minn., the son of William James and Pearl (Broughton) McAvoy. He was raised and educated in a country school near Baldwin.

He married Joyce Fischer in 1940 in North Dakota. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 as a paratrooper. He served in the European, African and Middle East Theaters.

He married Doris Brummond on June 14, 1957, in Bismarck. He worked for various construction companies, Sears and Roebuck, and also for the state of North Dakota as a maintenance engineer. He retired in 1980 from the state.

He was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 1326 and he enjoyed fishing, gardening and tinkering with lawn mowers.

He is survived by his wife Doris; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Roger, Appleton, Minn., and Howard and Evelyn McAvoy, Pine City, Minn.; two daughters, Maurene McAvoy, Shafer, Minn., and Cheryl Bahr, Anoka, Minn.; two step-sons, James Coleman, Monticello, Iowa, and Douglas Coleman, Bismarck; four step-daughters, and one step-son-in-law, Diane and Clayton Boeckel, Beulah, Susan Eilers, Des Moines, Iowa, Beverly Coleman, Bismarck, and Deborah Jenner, Bismarck; one sister, Erma Noonan, St. Cloud, Minn.; 30 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents; one brother; one sister; and two great-granddaughters. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Marie Pfeifer
Marie Pfeifer, 91, Mandan, and formerly of Devils Lake, died Oct. 23, 1997, in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in the church's cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Leo, New Orleans, and August, Camp Hills, Pa.; one daughter, Magdalena Thilmony, Mandan; one sister, Anna Grossman, Harvey; and five brothers, George, Pelican Rapids, Minn., Adam, Kennewick, Wash., Nicholas, Harvey, Edward, Mineral Springs, Wis., and Michael, Fargo. Albert Cordener
Albert Cordener, 1208 N. Second St., died Oct. 24, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Ottelia Heupel
WISHEK -- Ottelia Heupel, 86, Wishek, died Oct. 24, 1997, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ, Wishek. Burial will be in Wishek City Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters, June Schlecht, Gackle, and Jane Diede, Wishek; one son, Haven, Oakdale, Minn.; and one brother, Oscar Diede. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek)

Darlene Slavick
DICKINSON -- Darlene Slavick, 64, Dickinson, died Oct. 24, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 9 a.m. MST Wednesday at First Congregational-United Church of Christ, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

DICKINSON -- John P. Link, Dickinson, died Oct. 25, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Pauline Renkert
Pauline Marzolf Renkert, 84, Mandan, and formerly of Jamestown and Crosby, died Oct. 24, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Further arrangements are pending with Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.

Eugene Kapp
TAPPEN -- Eugene Albert Kapp, 55, Tappen, died Oct. 24, 1997. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Tappen. A prayer service will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel, Steele. Burial will be in Kapp Family Cemetery, near Crystal Springs.

Visitation will be today from 4-9 p.m. and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Steele, and one hour before the service at the church.

Eugene was born March 3, 1942, in Crystal Springs, the son of Jacob and Mary (Gardner) Kapp. He was raised and educated in Crystal Springs and Tappen. Eugene married Linda Patzner on July 1, 1966, in Tappen. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962, and was discharged from the National Guard in November of 1967. He worked for many area farmers over the years and Northern Improvement Co. out of Fargo. He was a bus driver and maintenance man for the Tappen Public School Bus System. Eugene also owned E & L Bar in Tappen from 1977 to 1986. From 1989 to 1996, he worked for Holen Construction out of McClusky.

He was a member of the Woodwick McDonough Legion Post No. 212.

Eugene adored his children and grandchildren. Family meant a lot to him. He also enjoyed the many friends he had. He was always ready to help anyone who needed it, and never expected anything in return. He will be greatly missed by many.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Linda; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jerry and Joyce Kapp, Tappen, and Steve Kapp, Fargo; one daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Eric Myers, West Fargo; three grandchildren, Ryan Eugene Kapp, Reid Eric Myers, and Alexis Renee Kleven; seven brothers and five sisters-in-law, William and Clara, and Daniel, all of Medina, Clarence and Gloria, Jamestown, Ted, Tappen, Jake and Winona, Larry and Connie, and Dale and Teresa, all of Dawson; and four sisters and one brother-in-law, Lorane Binder, Karen Marzolf, and Linda Kapp, all of Tappen, and Betty and Oscar Hofmann, Medina.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother.

Eugene's family would like to thank everyone for all of the calls, visits and concerns during his 18 months of illness. They all meant a lot to the family. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck-Steele)

Berniece Jacobson
Berniece F. Jacobson, 80, Bismarck, died Oct. 26, 1997, in a local hospital. By Berniece's request, her body was donated to UND School of Anatomy, Grand Forks. No services will be held.

She was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Brown County, Minn., the daughter of Otto and Lydia (Cady) Riederer. She was raised and educated in Driscoll. She married Otto Jacobson on June 18, 1947, in Redwood Falls, Minn. They lived in Bismarck following their marriage.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gerald Bartram, Devils Lake; one sister, Mary Malsam, Driscoll; one brother, Florian Reiderer, Driscoll; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, in 1987. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Clarence Falkenstein
Clarence H. Falkenstein, 92, 106 Versailles Ave., Bismarck, died Oct. 24, 1997, at home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Evangelical Free Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Joan Solheim
DICKINSON -- Joan S. Solheim, 50, Dickinson, died Oct. 24, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Thursday at St. Johns Episcopal Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Ruby Herman
BEULAH -- Ruby Herman, 63, Jamestown, Calif., died Oct. 14, 1996, in a Modesto, Calif., hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. MDT Tuesday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Further arrangements are pending.

Esther Specht
Esther Janice Specht, 46, 301 N. 15th St., died Oct. 12, 1996. Services will be at 1 p.m. MDT Saturday at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Tammy Moon, Independence, Mo.; two sons, Jerry, Fargo, and Joey, Center; her parents, Theofild and Esther Braun, Golden Valley; five brothers, Jonny, Max, Ken, Roy, all of Golden Valley, and Russ, St. Joseph's, Minn. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Alvin Lipp
LINTON -- Alvin F. Lipp, 66, Linton, died Oct. 17, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton. Further arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Wilfred Ficek
Wilfred J. Ficek, 58, Bismarck, died Oct. 15, 1996, in Bismarck. Services will be at 4 p.m. MDT today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his father, Joseph; five daughters, Jackie Hardy, Pine Bluff, Ark., Stephanie Froslie and Naomi Ficek, both of Fargo, Mary Jo Jacobson, West Fargo, and Ann Ficek, Dickinson; and five sisters, Dorothy Bahley, Martha Olheiser and Josie Kolodejchuk, all of Dickinson, Mary Kay Michels, Beach, and Georgianna Wehri, Hebron. Kenneth Sell
Dr. Kenneth W. Sell, 65, Atlanta, formerly of North Dakota, died Oct. 17, 1996. Memorial services will be held Saturday at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, Atlanta.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys; two daughters, Barbette Brannan and Cama Sell, both of Atlanta; and two sons, Thomas, Fargo, and Gregory, Germantown, Md. (H.M. Patterson and Son, Atlanta)

MEDORA -- Laura H. Grafsgaard, 87, Miami, formerly of Medora, died Oct. 15, 1996, in Miami. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, McHenry, with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery, McHenry.

She is survived by her husband, LeRoy; four daughters, Lana Arthur, Dickinson, Tammy Dockery, Salmon, Idaho, Laura Landgrebe, Bismarck, and Lisa Hecker, Dickinson; three sons, Pat Krank and Kenneth Mosbrucker, both of Dickinson, and Lee Mosbrucker, Spokane, Wash.; her mother, Caroline; one sister, Rosemarie Ehresman, Dickinson; and three brothers, Raymond Kuhn, Colorado Springs, Colo., Jerry Kuhn, Dickinson, and Arnie Kuhn, Jamestown. Raymond Dwelle
Raymond H. Dwelle, 61, Bismarck, died Oct. 16, 1996, in his home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Richard W. Owens officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Military rites will be performed by Veterans of Foreign Wars Gilbert N. Nelson Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Raymond was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Jamestown, the son of Ralph and Eva (Flanders) Dwelle. The family moved to Riverdale in 1948. After graduating from Riverdale High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 28, 1954. He attended medical corp school at Portsmouth, Va., and was later stationed at Camp LaJenne, N.C. Ray was subsequently assigned to corpsmans duty on a military ocean liner that transported women and children of military personnel across the ocean. During his four year tour of duty, Raymond received a degree in psychiatric counseling from Penn State. After his discharge from the Navy he graduated from BJC in 1959 under the GI Bill. He then went on to Dickinson State College where he received a bachelor of science degree in teaching, social sciences, English and speech in 1965. He married Gloria Jean Kendle Oct. 4, 1963, in Washburn. From 1965 to 1966 he was administrative liason officer for Lewis and Clark Job Corp at Fort Lincoln. From 1967 to 1973 he was financial aid officer at Mary College. From 1974 to 1977 he had his own counseling business on federal regulations, working with 21 colleges nationwide as financial aids director. From 1977 to the present he was the financial aid officer at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; three sons, Tony and Craig, both of Bismarck, and Dennis, stationed in Honolulu with the U.S. Navy; one daughter, Amy, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Devin R. Dwelle, Breanna DeWald and Caitlen Yi; one brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Sharon, Bismarck; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Cleaice and Lowell Sease, Mandan, Lovera Kunz, Jamestown, Jean Carroll, San Jose, Calif., Elnora and Julius Riedy, St. Louis, Mo., and Sharon and Dale Kastner, Pierre, S.D.; and special friends, Ed and Mae Johnson, Wilbur Red Tomahawk, Margaret Red Shirt, Mike Blazek; and one very special friend, Helen ``Irish" Linnertz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Marvin, Norman and Dale.

The family prefers memorials to Ray Dwelle Scholarship Fund.

Lilly Huesers
GARRISON -- Lilly Huesers, 81, Minot, formerly of Garrison, died Oct. 15, 1996, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Gene Lindemann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation is ongoing at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue after 6:30 tonight at the church. A rosary and vigil will begin at 7:30 tonight at the church.

Lilly Mehlhoff was born July 9, 1915, at Coleharbor, to Ferdinand and Pauline (Hoffer) Mehlhoff. She was raised and educated at Coleharbor. Her father died in 1920, and her mother married Frederick Weiss in 1922. They lived on a farm near Coleharbor. On Sept. 11, 1937, she married Barney Huesers in Underwood. They bought a farm 16 miles northeast of Garrison. They moved into Garrison in the late 1940s. Barney died in 1958. Lilly was a resident of Trinity Nursing Home in Minot for the last three years.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jim Carter, Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Maynard and Karen, Max, Kenneth and Betty, Garrison, and Edward and Laurie, Lyons, Colo.; two sisters, Helen Probst, Chico, Calif., and Esther Mehlhoff, Minot; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, William, in 1962.
