Benedict 'Ben' Schutt
BEULAH -- Benedict "Ben" S. Schutt, 74, Beulah, died June 2, 1997, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Beulah, with the Rev. James Reardon officiating. Burial will be in Beulah Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Scott Schutt, Darrin Schutt, Jeremy Schutt, Joshua Schutt, Michael Schutt, Brian Emter, Corey Denison, Travis Kuhn, Brandon Kuhn, Jordan Mewes, Connor Moberg, Christ Sayler and Jason Sayler.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. A vigil service will begin at 7 tonight at the church.

Ben Sebastian Schutt was born Aug. 19, 1922, near Beulah, the son of Sebastian and Christina (Hoerner) Schutt. He was raised and educated near the family farm near Beulah. After completing school, Ben farmed south of Beulah until 1951. On July 18, 1949, Ben married Agnes Hellman at St. Phillips in Hershfield. Ben and Agnes later moved into Beulah and Ben worked for Oxident Lumber in Beulah for two years. In the spring of 1954, he went to work on the Garrison Dam project until its completion seven years later. In 1961, Ben went to work as a dragline operator for Knife River Coal Mining Co. south of Beulah until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Beulah, and Knights of Columbus. Ben loved to fish with his children when they were younger, travel and help people from all over the northwest with their chiropractic problems.

He is survived by his wife, Agnes; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert M. and Jean, Beulah, Ray, and his special friend, Shirley Praus, Bismarck, and Joseph M., Beulah; five daughters and sons-in-law, Arlene and Eugene Emter, Bismarck, Adeline and Steve Denison, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Irene and Wayne Kuhn, and Pat and Randy Moberg, all of Beulah, and Susan and Darryl Mewes, Silver Bay, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe, Stanwood, Wash.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ralph; six brothers, Mike, Emanuel, Martin, John, Frank and Frankie; and two sisters, Amelia Gerving and Barbara Fetch.

Leah Rauchwater
Leah Rauchwater, 79, Mandan, formerly of Fort Rice, died June 3, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be at noon Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Hugo Blotsky officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Rice.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30. Visitation will continue after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Leah Lumsden was born June 14, 1917, at Fort Rice, the daughter of Edgar and Hazel (Colby) Lumsden. She was raised and educated in the area and married Joseph F. Rauchwater, Jan. 23, 1934, in Bismarck. They farmed and ranched west of Fort Rice. Joseph died Nov. 30, 1965. Leah moved to Mandan in 1974 and became a resident of the Bismarck Baptist Home in May 1994.

She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Dolores and Ray Geiger, Bismarck, and Delila Nelson, Lois and Tom Schaff, and Ronda Pizzo, all of Mandan; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Wayne, Bismarck, Joe and Carol, Utah, and Monte, San Diego, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Helen Lumsden, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; two sons, Leon, and a son who died in infancy; one brother, Donald "Bud;" an infant sister, Edrie; and her step-father, Jess Muccie.

Eva Rutschke
Eva Rutschke, 70, 3235 Begonia Ave., Bismarck, died Sept. 28, 1996, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of St. Ann, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Eva was born May 15, 1926, at Zeeland, the daughter of Nick and Caroline (Glatt) Wolf. She was raised and educated at Zeeland. She married William Rutschke May 17, 1948. They lived in Zeeland until 1965, when the family moved to Bismarck.

Eva loved crafts, quilting, crocheting and gardening. She was a very loving wife, mother and grandmother, who dedicated her life to her family.

She is survived by her husband, William Sr.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Tom and Linda, Little Rock, Ark., Donald and Denise, Bismarck, and William Jr., Bismarck; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Mark Murrey, Wilton, and Sharon and Jim Schweigert, Bismarck; four grandsons; five granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and several other family members.

Mary Gisi
HARVEY -- Mary Gisi, 87, Harvey, died Sept. 30, 1996, in the Harvey hospital. Arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Emanuel Meckle
MINOT -- Emanuel Meckle, 93, Minot, died Sept. 29, 1996, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

He is survived by six sons, Rueben, Miles City, Mont., Walter, Martin, Ted, Wildrose, Bill, Mobridge, S.D., Wilmar, Rochester, Wash., and Emanuel, Omaha, Neb.; eight daughters, Lenora Roemmich, Chinook, Mont., Wanda Stein, Minot, Elsie Wellman, Rapid City, S.D., Marilyn Biesterfeld, Sheridan, Wyo., Donna Debowey, Cheyenne, Wyo., Cora Rundberg, Minot, Lydia Porter, Olympia, Wash., and Charlotte Lindquist, Hurdsfield; and two sisters, Alvina Dockter, McClusky, and Freida Smith, Seattle. Iris Halsey
ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Iris Halsey, 49, Aberdeen, died of cancer Sept. 29, 1996, in the Aberdeen hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates. Further arrangements are pending at Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Albert Schmitt
Albert Schmitt, 96, Bismarck, died Sept. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2-30 p.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Eric Saxvik officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Albert was born May 3, 1901, in McPherson County, S.D., near Hosmer, to Adolph and Katherine (Will) Schmitt. Albert was the youngest of five children. His father died when he was 6 months old. His mother was later married to Jake Reule. Together they had seven children.

In 1924, Albert was united in marriage to Rose Kempf at St. John's Lutheran Church, Jewel Parish, 15 miles east of Ashley. Albert and Rose lived on four different farms until 1938 when they moved to Kulm. Here Albert built a two-lane bowling alley which he operated until 1940. They then moved to Ellendale where he went into the bowling alley business with his brother, Jake. When his brother moved his family to California, Albert and Rose took over the business and added two more lanes. After selling the bowling alley business, Albert worked as a carpenter and plumber. He left his mark in Ellendale in the building of several homes, the American Lutheran Mission Church and many varied jobs.

In 1958 they bought a farm in South Dakota, seven miles south of Ellendale. They lived there until moving to Bismarck in 1975 where Albert continued carpentry work until 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; one daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Willis Demke, Bismarck; three grandchildren, Jim Demke, Rock Valley, Iowa, Susan Blaney, Miami, and David Demke, Portland, Ore.; two great-grandchildren, Amy and Sarah Demke; one sister, Lydia Nill, Sacramento, Calif.; and two half-sisters, Martha Kempf, Sacramento, and Theophilia Luce, Saratoga, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter; two sisters; one brother; two half-sisters; and three half-brothers.

Catherine Lawyer
Catherine M. Lawyer, 78, 819 N. Third St., died Sept. 7, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Dakota Memorial Chapel, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish prayer service.

Catherine McDonald was born Dec. 15, 1918, in Bismarck, the daughter of Dan J. and Anna (Robidou) McDonald. She was raised and educated in Bismarck, and graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1935. She married J. Howard Lawyer in 1940. She worked at various places and was the first church secretary at Church of Corpus Christi, working for Father Dolan even before Corpus Christi opened up as a parish. Mr. Lawyer died in 1967. In 1972 she married Wesley Lawyer, who died in 1986.

She is survived by two sisters, Rhea McDonald and Betty Leuwer, both of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Leona McDonald, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

Michael Feist
LINTON -- Michael P. Feist, 74, Linton, died Sept. 7, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; two sons, Robert and Edward, both of Bismarck; six daughters, Elaine Taszarek, Bismarck, Donna Chaffin, St. Charles, Mo., Deloris Preston, Spokane, Wash., Janice Young, Mandan, Nancy Pfennig, Mandan, and Patricia Phelps, Sumner, Wash.; four brothers, Joe, Andrew and Herman, all of Linton, and Raymond, Rapid City, S.D.; and four sisters, Irene Getz, Strasburg, Josephine Hansen, Mount Shasta, Calif., Rosabell Steffes, Cudahy, Wis., and Angeline Lipp, Bismarck. Ida Buchert
COLEHARBOR -- Ida Buchert, 88, Coleharbor, died Sept. 7, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Coleharbor, with the Rev. John Nilson officiating. Burial will be in Coleharbor Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Ida was born June 24, 1909, in Krem, the daughter of John and Christine (Richter) Knoell. She grew up in the Hazen area. On March 31, 1935, she married John Buchert in Hazen. They lived in the Coleharbor area. John died in January 1977.

Ida enjoyed cake decorating and making quilts. She was a member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Loren Johnston, Carolina Beach, N.C.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lorell, Coleharbor, and Rodney and Corey, Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one son, Gordon; and brothers and sisters.

Mathias Bachmeier
WISHEK -- Mathias J. Bachmeier, 64, Wishek, died Sept. 7, 1997, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret-Mary Catholic Church, Drake, with burial at 4 p.m. Thursday in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Wishek.

He is survived by three sons, Kurt and Joe, both of Bismarck, and Brad, Phoenix; three daughters, Karla Goebel and Doreen Buchholz, both of Wishek, and Darlene Buchholz, Fargo; seven brothers, Nick, Northwood, Anton, Carrington, Leo, Tacoma, Wash., Phillip, Great Falls, Mont., Ben, Minot, and Adam and Joe, both of Towner; and three sisters, Eva Duchscherer, Granville, Magdelena Duchscherer, Drake, and Helen Koble, Drake. Glenn Marshall
MINOT -- Glenn L. Marshall, 70, Minot, formerly of Burlington, died Sept. 6, 1997, in a Minneapolis hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; three daughters, Connie Fjeldahl, Berthold, Kim Phillips, Minot, and Kathy Moen, Fulda, Minn.; three sons, Craig, Minot, and Keith and Kelly, both of Burlington; two sisters, Ethel Behm, Burlington, and Mildred Nelson, Horseshoe Bend, Ark.; and his twin brother, Clarence, Burlington. Robert Borthwick
Robert Borthwick, 71, Warwick, died Sept. 61, 997, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown.

He is survived by his wife, Clarice; one son, Duane, Underwood; three daughters, JoAnn Bear, Cooperstown, Denice Bear, Glenfield, and Bonnie Borthwick, Buxton; two brothers, Eugene, Albany, Ore., and Charles, Jamestown; and one sister, Leonore Eversick, Warwick.

Arthur Nesse
HETTINGER -- Arthur L. Nesse, 75, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Hettinger, died Sept. 7, 1997, in a Mesa hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with burial in Hettinger Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; and one son, Larry, Baker, Mont. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Wallace Williams
MADDOCK -- Wallace Williams, 80, Maddock, died Sept. 7, 1997, in the Devils Lake hospital. Arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Frank Heick
NEW ENGLAND -- Frank Heick, 85, New England, died Sept. 7, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

Catherine Zent
Catherine G. Zent, 85, 1113 W. Ave. B, died Sept. 26, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 12-30 p.m. Wednesday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Catherine was born July 6, 1913, at Monona, Iowa, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Havelicek) Griffin. Her family moved to Wishek where she attended grade school. They moved to Bismarck in 1929 and she graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1931. She was employed at several government offices as a secretary. She married George Zent, Dec. 27, 1941, in Bismarck. She then worked for 27 years as secretary to the director of the child welfare division of the Social Service Board of North Dakota. She retired in 1976.

She was a charter member of the Sakakawea Chapter of National Secretaries Association and St. Alexius Auxiliary.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary and George Fewel, Seattle; two grandchildren, Laurel and Mark; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George, who died April 17, 1998; an infant son, Patrick George; three sisters; and one brother.

Aloysious Red Bird
BULLHEAD, S.D. -- Aloysious Red Bird, 45, Bullhead, died Sept. 25, 1998, in the Fort Yates, N.D. hospital. Arrangements are pending at Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge.

Caroline Schapekahm
