Greta Stocks
Greta M. Stocks, 93, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, died Aug. 5, 1997, in Coeur d' Alene. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Mark Bayert officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Greta was born July 4, 1904, in Iowa, the daughter of Fulton and Gertrude (Moore) Nelson. She came to North Dakota in 1907, with her homesteading family and settled on a farm east of Baldwin, where she was raised and educated. She attended teachers college and taught rural school for a short time, however her interest in hair care and beauty operation led her to pursue a trade which at that time was a hair setting called "marcelle waving." She made regular trips on the Soo Line Railway, stopping at the small towns along the way on her weekly jaunt, and marcelling her customer's hair. She married Lawrence Stocks in 1924, at Wilton. They lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for a time, but returned to North Dakota to start a farming operation east of Baldwin in 1930. In 1944 they moved to Bismarck, where she graduated from Christie Beauty School. She established her own beauty shop called The Swirl, which was above the old Sarah Gold Shop. In 1951, they moved to Coeur d' Alene, where she again established The Swirl Beauty Shop, and where they enjoyed the mountain climate and lifestyle for many years. After her husband passed away, she spent five years, 1985-1990, in Bismarck.

She was active in her church, entertaining her circle in her home, in March of 1997. She was also active in the business of beauty care, initiating a program for hair care in nursing homes and hospitals. Homemaking was also high on her priority list. She loved nice things, and was an excellent seamstress and cook. Her home was a well-kept, inviting and pleasant place. She came from a musical, singing family, and a family get-together never ended without an extended sing-along which included kids from 3 years on up. Greta was often the accompanist on the piano. She loved her family and extended family. She was our beloved mother and Aunt Greta, and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and John Roussos, Coeur d' Alene; one granddaughter, Greta Roussos; two great-granddaughters, Lauren and Adrian Pocklington; four sisters-in-law, Alice Nelson, Florence Nelson, Irene Nelson and Mildred Nelson; nieces and nephews, Deloris Alm, Mercedes Alm, June Michelson, Marlys Davis, Colleen Murrey, Alan Nelson, Corliss Nelson Jr., Gregory Nelson, Sigrid Johnson, Joan Auch and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews; and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; her parents; five brothers, Porter "Pat," Reginald "Bud," Viran, Corliss, and Howard; and nieces and nephews, DuWayne Nelson, Norma Jean Felton, Betty Paul, Billy Nelson, Bonnie Ayres and Marjorie Nelson.

The family prefers memorials to hospice, either in Coeur d' Alene or Bismarck, or your personal preference.
