Brenda Klein
ZEELAND -- Brenda K. Klein, 40, Zeeland, died Aug. 12, 1997, in Grafton. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Zeeland. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Zeeland.

She is survived by her parents, Daniel and Katherine Klein, Zeeland; and four brothers. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)

Ann Swedlund
Ann T. (Foss) Swedlund, 85, Winner, S.D., died Aug. 12, 1997, in a Salt Lake City, Utah hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at United Methodist Church, Winner. Burial will be in Winner Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Wayne Foss, West Lake Village, Calif., Larry Foss, Rock Springs, Wyo., and Jim Foss, Bismarck; and four sisters, Mary Flickinger, Libby, Mont., Elsie Austin, Roseburg, Ore., and Eve English and Bea Mann, both of Hot Springs, S.D. (Mason Funeral Home, Winner)

Elizabeth Engel
Elizabeth Gertrude Engel, 74, Mesa, Ariz., died July 23, 1997, in Mesa. Mrs. Engel, a homemaker, was born in St. Anthony, N.D. and lived for many years in Mandan, N.D.

Survivors include one son, Jerry, Mandan; one daughter, Charlotte, Everett, Wash.; three sisters, Marie Lloyd, Adeline Marchesini, and Margaret Hanna; one brother, Bill Weigel, Mandan; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; and one son, Milton ``Butch" Engel.

HARVEY -- Peter Grad, 67, Harvey, died Aug. 13, 1997, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selz. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; four sons, Robert, Maddock, Bruce, Williston, Gerard, Harvey, and Clifford, Dickinson; three daughters, Jane Rademacher, Underwood, Nancy Hansen, Fargo, and Helen Hauser, Maple Grove, Minn.; one brother, Tony, Harvey; and two sisters, Barbara Wocher and Martha Frost, both of Seattle, Wash. RUTLAND -- Magdalene M. (Sundlie) Feist, 86, Rutland, died Aug. 13, 1997, in the Oakes hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Nordland Lutheran Church, Rutland. Burial will be in Rutland Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Ellis Sundlie, Salem, Ore., Douglas Sundlie, Horace, and David Sundlie, Bismarck. (Franzen Funeral Chapel, Forman)

Catherine Frank
DICKINSON -- Catherine Frank, 90, Dickinson, died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, the Rev. Eugene, Bismarck, and Boniface, Billings, Mont.; two daughters, Margaret Gunsch-Hovland, Bozeman, Mont., and Dorothy Smiley, Greeley, Colo.; and five sisters, Lena Brogan, Rochester, Minn., Mary Frank, Yakima, Wash., Rose Frank, New England, Monica Kinsey, Lake Tahoe, Nev., and Margaret Kostelecky, Jamestown. Cory Grothe
Cory A. Grothe, 19, 2750 71st Ave. N.E., died Aug. 5, 1997, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Cory was born March 18, 1978, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the son of Jim and Linda (Nordhausen) Grothe. Cory attended Naughton School, Simle Junior High and graduated from Century High School. He loved to fish, and his hobbies included Tae Kwon Do, at which he won many matches, including several gold medals at the 1994 Prairie Rose State Games. He was last employed by Fargo Glass in Bismarck.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Even though his life on Earth was short, he leaves behind many friends and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Tamar and Jamie Hoynes, Mandan; one brother, Travis, Camp Pendleton, Calif.; his grandparents, Tom and Ida Grothe, Bismarck; two nieces, Breana and Mikayla; several aunts, uncles, cousins; and a very special friend, Corry Feist.

He was prececded in death by his grandparents, Douglas and Phyllis Nordhausen; and one uncle, Doug Nordhausen.

Chrystal Janssen
CENTER -- Chrystal Janssen, 83, Center, died Aug. 6, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Norman Thormodsgard
HETTINGER -- Norman Thormodsgard, 45, Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Hettinger, died suddenly Aug. 4, 1997, in an Oklahoma City hospital of a cerebral aneurysm.

He is survived by one son, Mark, Fargo; two daughters, Holly and Heidi, both of Hettinger; his parents, Dale and Delores Thormodsgard, Hettinger; three brothers, James, Miles City, Mont., Neil, Scott City, Kan., and Allen, Edmond, Okla.; and two sisters, Kathleen Erickson, Hettinger, and Susan Anderson, Lodgepole, S.D. Gudlaug Fossum
DICKINSON -- Gudlaug Fossum, 81, New Hope, Minn., died Aug. 5, 1997, in a New Hope nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday at Dickinson Cemetery. Further arrangements are pending at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson.

DeVerne Neumiller
DeVerne Neumiller, 63, Bismarck, died Aug. 6, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, and at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bowdon Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

J. Carlton Austad
HETTINGER -- J. Carlton Austad, 78, Hettinger, died Aug. 6, 1997, in Hettinger. Arrangements are pending at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger.

Samuel Meyers Jr.
ROSEGLEN -- Samuel Anthony Meyers Jr., 40, Roseglen, died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, New Town, with burial in Shell Creek Catholic Cemetery, rural New Town.

He is survived by two sons, Jason and Jeremy, both of White Shield; two daughters, Melinda and Samantha, both of White Shield; two brothers, Bennet, Bismarck, and Darren, White Shield; five sisters, Nancy Fox and Neva Meyers, both of White Shield, Jonelle Abe, Hazen, Doreen Duncan, Mesa, Ariz., and Kathy Buffalo Boy, Fort Yates; and his mother, Darlene Meyers, White Shield. Alvin Toso
MADDOCK -- Alvin Toso, 82, Maddock, died Aug. 5, 1997, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Esmond, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice; one daughter, Ruth Magnussen, New Prague, Minn.; and two sisters, Gerda Smith and Esther Smith, both of Maddock. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Howard Ross
WILLISTON -- Howard Ross, 81, Williston, died Aug. 4, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Grenora, with burial in Grenora Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Olga; two sons, Richard, Ray, and Howard, Grenora; two daughters, Vera Raaum, Casselton, and Louise Ross, Fairview, Mont.; and one sister, Ione Thome, Grenora. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston)

Arnold Lindemann
DICKINSON -- Arnold Lindemann, 75, Dickinson, died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Tillie; one daughter, Michele Jaeger, Dickinson; and three sons, Gary, Bismarck, Greg, Crosby, and the Rev. Gene, Garrison. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

Oliver Wright
FLASHER -- Oliver E. Wright, 78, Flasher, died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at American Lutheran Church, Flasher, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be in Fairhill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Oliver was born June 14, 1919, in Weekes Township, Grant County, the son of Robert and Mary (Russell) Wright. He attended rural school and farmed and ranched with his father on the family farm until 1940, when he bought the farm from his father. On June 3, 1944, he married Leanor Weekes in Bismarck, and they continued to farm and ranch until October 1993, when they bought a home in Flasher. Oliver was a dealer for Northrup King Corn Seed for eight years and made many lasting friendships with the farmers in the area. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle and loved to go fishing with his children and grandchildren.

Oliver was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Flasher and Mandan Elks. He served on various boards including the Weekes Township School Board, the Flasher Rural Fire Department, and the American Lutheran Church Council Board.

He is survived by his wife, Leanor; two daughters and sons-in-law, Clifford and Connie Rossow, Flasher, and Sandra Kukla, Lewistown, Mont., and Nick Kukla, Aberdeen, S.D.; one son and daughter-in-law, Everett and Debra, Beulah; six grandchildren, Carmen and Brent Kukla, LeAnn and Lacey Rossow, Shana Stockert and Jennifer Stockert Murrey; one sister-in-law, Pearl Wright, College Place, Wash.; many nieces and nephews; and life-long friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Estel, Lawrence, Fred, Guy and Andrew.

Rose Amos
Rose Amos, 91, Mandan, died Aug. 5, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witnesses, Mandan, with Ralph Dugan officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Friday.

Rose Amos was born March 4, 1906, south of Mandan, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (Holy) Svihla. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools. She married Frank Slezak on Sept. 23, 1923. They farmed south of Mandan and had four children, George, Louise, Jack and Ann. In 1954 she married Ora Amos and lived in Oregon for a few years before moving back to Mandan. She was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses Congregation of Mandan. She was a seamstress by profession and loved being with her family, gardening, crocheting, talking to people about her religion and doing volunteer mending for nursing home and group home residents.

She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Stephanie, Mandan, and Jack and Patty, Lake Worth, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise (Renner) and Ralph Hatzenbihler, Mandan, and Ann and Bob Kudrna, Great Falls, Mont.; her grandchildren, Debbie Klesalek, Ted Slezak, Jeff Renner, Becky Charvat, Jackie Engelhart, Lori Renner, Nick Renner, Glenn Renner, Christ Kudrna, Tony Kudrna, Aimee Lampman, Julie Kirkgarrd, Laura Brackett, Jon Kudrna, Brother Jason Kudrna; one step-grandchild, Heidi Berger; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one great-great-grandchild anticipated in November; and one brother, Jim, Oregon City, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Louis and Eddie; and five sisters, Barbara, Mary, Agnes, Lillian and Louise, who died as an infant.

Edna Brostrom
WILTON -- Edna O. Brostrom, 78, Wilton, died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton, with burial in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Edna O. Stenquist was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Painted Woods Township, rural Wilton, to Axel and Emma (Anderson) Stenquist. She attended school in Wilton, graduating in 1937. She then attended Union Commercial College in Grand Forks. Edna then worked for the A.S.C.S. office for one year, and then the North Dakota State Land Department for three years. She married Robert W. Brostrom, June 12, 1942, in the Painted Woods Lutheran Church. They made their home in Wilton and farmed the Gust Brostrom homestead in Nettle Creek Township, McLean County, until 1976, when they retired.

Edna was a member of Macomber Homemakers until it disbanded. She assisted with the Girl Scouts when her children were involved. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was active in the Women's Group, held various offices and also taught Sunday School. She was an active member of Wilton Pioneers Club. Edna enjoyed doing handiwork, gardening and baking.

She is survived by her husband, Robert W.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Theodore Kueppers, Minneapolis, and Judy and Lynn Redington, Huntsville, Ala.; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Cassie, Fargo; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Jeffrey and Stephen Kueppers, Kent and Sara Redington, and Matthew and Patrick Brostrom; and two sisters, Hildur Bitner and Ruth Hartl, both of Bismarck.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and one half-brother.

The family prefers memorials to First Presbyterian Church, Wilton.

John Weinhandl
John J. Weinhandl, 83, Mandan, died Aug. 4, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Moose ritual will begin at 7 tonight, followed by a parish rosary at 7:30, and a parish vigil at 8.

John was born Dec. 11, 1913, at St. Anthony, the son of George and Katherine (Haider) Weinhandl. John was raised and educated at St. Anthony. He married Mary Koppy, Feb. 8, 1956, in Mandan. John was employed by the City of Mandan as a supervisor at Mandan Union Cemetery until his retirement in 1979. During that time he was also employed by Watertown Monument Co. selling and setting monument stones.

He was a member of Moose Lodge, where he held the office of governor in 1967 and 1968.

He is survived by one son, Jim, Great Falls, Mont.; one grandson, Chase Michael; two brothers, Richard Weinhandl, and Larry Weinhandl, Fergus Falls, Minn.; two half-brothers, Ray Weinhandl, Lemon Grove, Calif., and Bob Weinhandl, Las Vegas; four step-brothers, Larry Michlitsch, Bradley, Ill., John Michlitsch, Lemon Grove, Joe Michlitsch, Bismarck, and Tony Michlitsch, Flasher; one half-sister, Rose Fagon, Lemon Grove; and one step-sister, Pauline Wright, Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary, who died Jan. 25, 1992; five brothers, George, Henry, Frank, Robert and Joe; and one step-brother, Paul Michlitsch.
