Charles Ficek
Charles "Charlie" Joseph Ficek, 74, Reno, Nev., formerly of Dickinson, died of kidney cancer, Aug. 3, 1997, in a Reno hospital. Memorial services will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery Chapel, rural Mandan, with military rites.

Charles was born May 25, 1923, the sixth child of seven, to John and Katherine (Kinzel) Ficek. He lived on the family farm and attended schools in the Dickinson area until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1943. Charlie was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II from which he received an honorable discharge along with several medals for honor and valor. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326, Bismarck.

In the years that Charlie lived in Dickinson he was a carpenter and home builder by trade. In more recent years he lived in Reno, where he managed an apartment complex. For most of his life he enjoyed bowling, fishing and old-time country music.

Charlie is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Clary and Shelly (Cech) Ficek; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Allen Perius; two grandchildren, Courtney and Landon Ficek, all of Bismarck; and one sister, Edith Reilly, Vancouver, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Katherine Ficek; two brothers, John and Victor; three sisters, Anna Luptak, Mary Wandler and Christine Splichal; and two infant daughters.

A special thank you to the staff at the VA Medical Center, Reno, who cared for Charlie through his illness and who were so helpful to his children upon his expiration. Also, thank you to the special neighbors of Charlie in the apartment complex where he lived who were concerned about him, looked in on him, and cared for him while he was ill.

In life, Charlie was a well-liked person.

Bernice Flemmer
BEULAH -- Bernice Flemmer, 71, Beulah, died Aug. 6, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah, with burial in Beulah Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. MDT today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Bernice was born April 24, 1926, near Zap, the daughter of Edward and Barbara (Buechler) Luder. She was raised and educated south of Zap. On Feb. 26, 1946, she married Ludwig Flemmer at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Zap. They farmed south of Zap until moving to Beulah in the fall of 1950, where they have lived since. Bernice worked cleaning offices and homes for several years. On July 24, 1997, she became a resident of the Knife River Care Center, Beulah.

She was a member of the Worldwide Church of God in Bismarck. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and reading.

She is survived by her husband, Ludwig; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Larry Buchmann, Beulah; one son and daughter-in-law, DeLon and Crystal, Beulah; and three grandchildren, Scott Buchmann, Bismarck, Jeremy Buchmann, Beulah, and Ashley Flemmer, Beulah.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lois Berger
Lois Berger, 67, Pasco, Wash., died Aug. 3, 1997, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Friday.

Lois Nora Nordholm was born Sept. 1, 1929, in Mandan, to Bill and Agnes (Mortinson) Nordholm. She married Ted Berger, Oct. 11, 1952, at Grafton. She loved to garden, read and play cards. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by two sons, Ted Jr. and his friend, Roxann, Kennewick, Wash., and Mark, Chattaroy, Wash.; five daughters and sons-in-law, Robyn and Bill Zander, Willmar, Minn., Susan and Mustafa Tasci, Pasco, Lori and Dave Schulz, Mandan, Kim and Jeff Stewart, Yuba City, Calif., and Brenda and James Cook, Chattaroy, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Lloyd, Phoenix, and Wilfred, Anaconda, Mont.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ted; one son, Clark; twin daughters, Linda and Glenda; and one sister, Helen.

Irene Pleets
Irene E. Pleets, 59, Sacramento, Calif., formerly of Fort Yates, died Aug. 5, 1997, in Sacramento. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Leonard Savelkoul will officiate.

Irene was born Oct. 7, 1937, at Fort Yates, to Verl Denny and Helen Pleets. She grew up and attended school in Fort Yates. She also attended St. Joseph's Indian School at Chamberlin, S.D., and St. Paul's Indian Mission School at Marty, S.D., graduating from high school in 1955. She then attended college in Indianapolis, Ind., and Carroll College in Missoula, Mont. She moved to San Francisco and worked as a graphic artist for the State of California. She finally settled in Sacramento. Irene retired there due to health problems.

She is survived by three sisters and brothers-in-law, Henrietta and Ernest Mosier, Hoopa, Calif., Jeanette and Henry Bailey, Fort yates, and Lita and Jim Davis, Belcourt; one brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Lois Pleets, Fort Yates; and many nieces and nephews. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Theresa Martin
Theresa Martin, 92, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, formerly of 328 N. 18th St., died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Theresa was born Feb. 5, 1905, at Cassvelle, Wis., the daughter of Theodore and Catherine (Moliter) Mumm. She married Claude N. Martin, May 16, 1933.

She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Sven Peterson, Minneapolis; nieces and nephews, Wayne Eckroth, Helen Jamieson, John Gallagher, Bernard and Gloria Mumm, Jack and Marie Bristlin, John and Dorothea Mumm, Walter and Teresa Peterson, Wayne and Joann Lenk, Donald and Ross Weber, Larry and Jean Mumm; many grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and special friends, Paul and Lu Heber.

In addition to her husband, Claude, who died April 17, 1980, she was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; one sister; and a special niece, Bernadette Eckroth.

Cory Grothe
Cory A. Grothe, 19, 2750 71st Ave. N.E., died Aug. 5, 1997. Further arrangements are pending at Boelter Funeral Home.

Theresa Martin
Theresa Martin, 92, Bismarck, died Aug. 5, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Boelter Funeral Home.

Raymond Fettig
PARSHALL -- Raymond Fettig, 53, Parshall, died Aug. 2, 1997, in the Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rockview Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Parshall. Burial will be in Parshall Cemetery.

He is survived by two brothers, Arthur, New Brighton, Minn., and Felix, Minneapolis; and one sister, Irene Moore, Stanton, Mich. (Johnson Funeral Home, Parshall)

Alvin Toso
MADDOCK -- Alvin Toso, 82, Maddock, died Aug. 5, 1997, in the Rugby hospital. Arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock.

Rose Amos
Rose Amos, 91, Mandan, died Aug. 5, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Oliver Wright
FLASHER -- Oliver Wright, 78, Flasher, died Aug. 5, 1997, in Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at American Lutheran Church, Flasher. Further arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Greta Stocks
Greta Stocks, 93, Couer d' Alene, Idaho, died Aug. 5, 1997, in Couer d' Alene. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

John Kelly
Dr. John Allen Kelly, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, died suddenly Aug. 3, 1997, in Tucson, Ariz., at the age of 49. Services for Dr. Kelly will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington, where a prayer service will begin at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

John was born March 15, 1948, at Jamestown, the son of E. Wayne Kelly and Edna (Hausauer) Kelly. In 1959 he moved with his parents to Carrington. He graduated from Carrington High School in 1966. He graduated from the University of North Dakota and received his medical degree from the University of Washington Medical School in 1974. He performed his medical residency in surgery at the Tucson Medical Center. Dr. Kelly practiced general and vascular surgery and was on staff at several hospitals in Tucson until his death. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

John loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hiking and bicycling.

John is survived by his mother, Edna K. Kelly, Carrington; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Katherine and David Boron, Anoka, Minn., and Donna Kelly, Woodbury, Minn.; one nephew, Kelly Skadberg; three nieces, Melissa Ring, Nicole Ring and Sophia Skadberg; and a special friend, Susan Banchy.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

Lydia Bauer
NEW SALEM -- Lydia A. Bauer, 90, New Salem, died Aug. 4, 1997, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Loren Strum officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, New Salem.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 tonight at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Lydia was born Oct. 7, 1906, near Zeeland, the daughter of Christian and Jacobina (Hafner) Lechner. She married Theophil Bauer on July 19, 1927, in Wilton. They farmed in the Blue Grass area. She was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church including Ladies Aid.

Lydia is survived by her three daughters and three sons-in-law, Gertrude and the Rev. Bob Weaver, Cleveland, Ohio, Floris and John Beisel, Pittsburg, Kan., and Elizabeth and Bruce Clark, Bismarck; six sons and daughters-in-law, George and Deloris, Thornton, Colo., Herbert and Lorraine, Helena, Mont., Elmer and Mabel, New Salem, Ruben and Marlys, Seattle, the Rev. Mervyn and Judy, Scottsbluff, Neb., and Edmund and Pat, Rhinelander, Wis.; 36 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theophil, who died July 18, 1991; her son and his wife, Frederick and Alice; five sisters; and three brothers.

Hildegard Theisen
Hildegard Theisen, 78, 306 W. Ingals Ave., died Aug. 4, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight.

Hildegard Ternes was born March 17, 1919, near Raleigh, the daughter of Emanuel and Aurora (Miller) Ternes. She was raised and attended school in the Raleigh area. As a young woman she moved to Bismarck, where she met Edward Theisen, while he was stationed at Fort Lincoln with the United States Army. They were married Oct. 28, 1940, at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in Raleigh. They farmed near St. Joseph, Minn., and then returned to Raleigh where they farmed until moving to Bismarck in 1958. Hildegard loved her family and enjoyed tending to her flowers, garden and yard.

She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jerry, Bismarck, Roman and Darlene, Liberty Lake, Wash., and Mike and Deb, Bismarck; three daughters and sons-in-law, Doreen and Leonard Sabot, Fridley, Minn., Carmen and Vernon Giese, Bismarck, and Jackie and Allan Bosch, Bismarck; her friend, Deb Schantz, Bismarck; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Roger, Matt and Mavis, Victor and Mary, William and Clendora, and Rose Friesz; and one sister and brother-in-law, Isabel and Joe Pew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, on June 8, 1988; and four brothers.

Alvin Klein
MOTT -- Services for Alvin Klein, 75, Mott, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Neuburg United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Dwight Albers officiating. Burial will be in Neuburg Cemetery, north of Mott.

Serving as casketbearers will be Dean, Darold and Edmund Klein, Alan Roffler, Keith Schroeder and Luke Pfaff.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services.

Alvin E. Klein, son of Jacob and Martha (Hummel) Klein, was born Jan. 21, 1922, at his parents' homestead in rural Grant County. He attended rural school in Odessa Township, Hettinger County, and was raised on the family farm. Alvin married Irene Gruebele, July 11, 1948, at Elgin. They lived on their farm until they moved to Mott in 1969, where they built a home. Alvin loved to farm. It was his pride and joy, and he did it well. He retired from farming in 1983.

Alvin always kept busy with a garden and yard work. He enjoyed having coffee and visiting with his friends downtown. Alvin enjoyed life, and lived it to its fullest.

Alvin was a member of the Neuberg Church for many years and then the First Congregational Neuberg United Church of Christ at Mott. He served as a trustee and was serving on the Neuberg Cemetery Board.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Irene; one brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Delores, Hebron; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Katherine and Ruben Blumhardt, Laurel, Mont., and Elsie Schroeder, Glasgow, Mont.; one sister-in-law, Arlene Klein, Hebron; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ernest; and one nephew, Robert Schroeder. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott)

Bernard Demars
Bernard E. DeMars, 74, 2636 Gateway Ave., died Aug. 3, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary and vigil will begin at 7 tonight.

Bernard was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Bathgate, the son of William and Rachel (Miron) DeMars. He was educated in Bathgate and worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Army from June 21, 1944 to April 16, 1946. He was in the second campaigns in the Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe, for which he was awarded the combat infantryman's badge. Bernard attended University of North Dakota and graduated in 1950 with a degree in accounting. He married Evangeline Christine Boutin, July 9, 1951. He was employed for 15 years at the State Mill and Elevator in Grand Forks, before moving to Bismarck in 1966. He worked for 21 years as an accountant with the finance division of the Department of Human Services until his retirement in 1986.

He was an active member of Church of Corpus Christi. He served on finance committees for various organizations. He was a long-time member of DAV/VFW, American Legion, Elks, Serra and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed socializing, by playing cards, pinochle and bridge clubs.

He is survived by his wife, Christine; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Richard Sandvold, Redwood Falls, Minn., Julie Smith DeMars and Dale Smith, Grand Forks, and Janine and Mark Faris, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Therese Hackenberg DeMars, Kairo, Egypt; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Vivian Kratz, White Bear Lake, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and three sisters.

Norman Thormodsgard
HETTINGER -- Norman Thormodsgard, 45, Oklahoma City, Okla., died suddenly Aug. 4, 1997, of a cerebral aneurysm, in Oklahoma City. Arrangements are pending at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger.

Howard Wehrung
WILLISTON -- Howard Wehrung, 60, Williston, died Aug. 3, 1997, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; three daughters, Rhonda Richardson, Alexander, and Lorna Anderson and Joni Donner, both of Buckley, Wash.; his mother, Norma Wehrung, Watford City; and his brother, Robert, Watford City.
