Ida Hoffman
KULM -- Ida E. Hoffman, 86, Kulm, died Aug. 2, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10-30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, Kulm, with the Rev. Jerry VanCurler officiating. Burial will be in New Beresena Cemetery, rural Kulm. Mrs. Adella Kjos will serve as organist with special music provided by the Dorcas Society and Rev. Bruce Adams.

Pallbearers for the service will be Ronnie Ehresman, Delbert Eszlinger, Rodney Eszlinger, Kermit Herman, Dennis Herrmann and Gary Hoffman.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Ida was born Nov. 6, 1910, in rural Dickey County, southeast of Kulm, the daughter of Gottlieb and Sophia (Dietrich) Herrmann. She grew up on the family farm and received her elementary education in rural Dickey County Schools. Ida continued to live at home until her marriage to Jacob Hoffman, Oct. 3, 1937, at New Beresena Congregational Church east of Kulm. They moved to a farm 15 miles west of Forbes in rural McIntosh County. They farmed there until 1957, when they moved to Merricourt. In Merricourt they owned and operated Hoffman General Store until Mr. Hoffman died July 27, 1966. Ida moved to Kulm in November 1966 where she has lived since that time. Ida was employed by the Kulm Super Valu as a clerk, she also worked for Kramlich Lockers, did babysitting and worked as a janitors helper for the Kulm School for several years, until she retired in 1980.

Ida was a member of First Congregational Church of Kulm, the Dorcas Society and served as the pianist for the New Beresena, Salem and Merricourt Congregational churches for 33 years. She loved to play music and sing, having been a former member of the Ladies Chorus and Mixed Choirs, at the churches. Ida also served as treasurer of the village of Merricourt for several years.

She is survived by one son, Virgil, Florissant, Mo.; one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Ray Goehring, Kulm; two grandchildren, Monte Hoffman and Stuart and Tina Hoffman, all of Florissant; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Deopold and Velma Herman, Kulm, Solomon and Alice Herrmann, Jamestown, and Herman and Edna Herrmann, Kulm.

She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son, Oliver; her parents; five brothers; and one sister.

Tobias Birkholz
BEULAH -- Tobias J. Birkholz, 85, Beulah, died Aug. 2, 1997, in the Beulah nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Tobias was born Aug. 15, 1911, in Krem, to John and Christina (Heihn) Birkholz. He grew up in the Krem area and attended Krem school. Tobias learned the carpenter trade and did construction and remodeling jobs. He married Mary Anne Johnson, June 22, 1948, at Underwood, where they made their home. In 1959 they moved with construction jobs to Minot, Big Bend and Stanton, St. Paul, Minn., and Chester and Libby, Mont. He retired and they returned to Underwood in August 1976. She died Aug. 7, 1977. He moved to Bismarck, and in November of 1995, became a resident of the Knife River Care Center at Beulah.

He is survived by one brother, Herb, Tacoma, Wash.; three sisters, Ida Erbele, Tacoma, Elma Onstatt, Idaho, and Katie Rumsey, Anchorage, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews.

Perpetua Emter
Perpetua E. Emter, 64, Bismarck, died Aug. 4, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating.

Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a vigil and prayer service will begin at 7 tonight.

Perpetua Emter was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Glen Ullin, to Mike and Barbara (Doll) Emter. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and belonged to Catholic Daughters.

She is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Marge Emter, Billings, Mont., Adolph and Christine Emter, Bismarck, and Eugene and Arlene Emter, Bismarck; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Clarence Glaser, Glendive, Mont., Ardella and Leo Gehring, Bismarck, and Adelphia and James Horner, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Agnes; one stepsister, Rosie Hellman; and one stepbrother-in-law, Joe Hellman.

Barbara Baltzer
Barbara E. Baltzer, 79, 1110 E. Coulee Road, died Aug. 1, 1997, in Lakewood, Calif. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Cross, Bismarck, with the Rev. Keith D. Odney officiating. Burial will be in Napoleon.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Barbara Baltzer was born March 31, 1918, in McClusky, to Joseph and Bess (Winberg) Greitl. She grew up and attended school in Napoleon. Barbara served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. She was united in marriage on April 12, 1947, to Vernon Baltzer in Jamestown. For 15 years, Barbara worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Bismarck. She loved to work in her flower garden.

She is survived by four sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael and Renae, Tim and Terry, all of Bismarck, and Bruce, St. Paul, Minn.; one daughter, Sharman Newman, Hibbing, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Zersha Zech, Todd Newman, Kari Newman, Stephanie Baltzer, Julie Baltzer, Michael Baltzer and Ann Baltzer; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Meddie Greitl, California; and four sisters and one brother-in-law, Tena and Tom Murphy, Betty Malloy, Beverly Dorsey and Erma Atkins, all of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son, Joel Kevin; and four brothers, Gerald Greitl, Fred Greitl, Mike Greitl and Jim Greitl.

Randy Lipp
WISHEK -- Randy L. Lipp, 41, Wishek, died Aug. 3, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Church of Christ, Wishek, with burial in Wishek Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; three children, Patricia, Brandon and Shannon, all at home; his parents, Leo and Clara Lipp, Strasburg; three brothers, Silas, Jamestown, Russell, Mandan, and Bruce, Bismarck; and two sisters, Leane Schaffer, Wishek, and Diane Kiefer, Strasburg. John Houghton
HETTINGER -- John R. Houghton, 40, died Aug. 2, 1997, after a long illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hettinger.

He is survived by his wife, Bev; his son, John; two daughters, Sarah and Katie; his mother, Beatrice Houghton; five sisters, Donna Thomason, Doris Nash, Dorothy Houghton and Doreen Ormiston, all of Hettinger, and Darlene Mellmer, Beulah; and his grandfather, Ray Braun, Sturgis, S.D. Donald Bulyca
VELVA -- Donald L. Bulyca, 72, Velva, died Aug. 2, 1997, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, with burial in Velva Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two sons, Greg, Kirkland, Wash., and Rodney, Bothell, Wash.; two daughters, Cheryl Bulyca, Bismarck, and Nancy Seiber, Everett, Wash.; one brother, Emil, Lynwood, Wash.; and four sisters, Viola McDaniel, Velva, Deloris Larson, Tucson, Ariz., Lois Barker, Seattle, and Betty Frost, Aberdeen, Wash. Geneva Kouba
MICHIGAN -- Geneva Kouba, 86, Michigan, died Aug. 2, 1997, in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence O'Toole Catholic Church, Michigan, with burial in ZCBJ-Kosobud Cemetery, rural Lankin.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel, Lankin, and Edward, Bismarck. (Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota)

Emma Polensky
DICKINSON -- Emma Polensky, 87, Dickinson, died Aug. 1, 1997, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Betty Mayer, Dickinson, Delores Maershbecker, Martin, and Arlene Kupper, Grand Forks; one son, Albert Jr., Richland Center, Wis.; and one brother, Philip Samek, Nine Miles Falls, Wash. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Leonard Guthmiller
WOODWORTH -- Leonard Guthmiller, 69, Woodworth, died Aug. 2, 1997, in Woodworth. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Pettibone, with burial in Petersville Lutheran Cemetery.

Sonja Sorlie
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Sonja Louise Sorlie, 44, Bemidji, died Aug. 2, 1997, in a Fargo hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bemidji.

She is survived by her husband, Kirk; her mother, Helen Sorlie, Bismarck; one sister, Sue Sorlie, Bismarck; and one brother, Gus, Bismarck. (Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji)

Mildred Payne
GRANVILLE -- Mildred Christine Payne, 80, Granville, died Aug. 1, 1997, in her home. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva, with burial in Velva Cemetery.

She is survived by one son, Paul Kanenwisher, Velva; one daughter, Kay Fried, Bismarck; and one sister, Betty Wells, Kingman, Ariz. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva)

Clinton Emery
Clinton M. Emery, 71, 1013 E. Ave C., died Aug. 2, 1997, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert Lynne officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1326.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Clinton was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Williston, the son of Ralph and Blonda (Elvick) Emery. He was raised and educated at Zahl. He farmed for a few years, and also worked for Farmers Union Elevator in Zahl before joining the North Dakota National Guard. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge in 1952, he continued to serve with the North Dakota National Guard. Clinton returned to work at the Farmers Union Elevator in Zahl. He married LaVonne Dockter, Nov. 27, 1953, in Bismarck. They lived in Zahl before moving to Bismarck in 1956. He worked for Peavey Feed and Seed and for Con-Agra and Heartland until his retirement in 1991.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of United Commercial Travelers.

He is survived by his wife, LaVonne; two daughters and one son-in-law, Marcy and Victor Baumgartner, Horace, and Susan Emery, Mandan; one son, Greg, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Megan Baumgartner, Victor-Ralph Baumgartner, John Baumgartner, Lisa Baumgartner, Travis Collins and Amanda Collins; one brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and JoAnn, Williston; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and Duane Gafkjen, Alamo, and Lorraine and Julian Gunlikson, Zahl; three sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law, Clarinda Fowler, Bismarck, Mike and Iris Hilzendeger, Bismarck, Luella Boyer, Grand Forks, and Marlin Dockter, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Shane Rebel
NEW SALEM -- Shane Loren Rebel, 10, New Salem, died of injuries sustained in a three-wheeler accident, Aug. 2, 1997. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where a prayer vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Shane was born Sept. 27, 1986, in Dickinson, to Harold and Kimberly (Meser) Rebel. He was raised and educated at Wahpeton and New Salem. He loved the outdoor activities of hunting, fishing, riding horses and three-wheelers. He enjoyed playing midget baseball and wrestling. Shane was a dedicated Green Bay Packer fan and was planning on going to a game this fall.

He is survived by his parents, Harold and Kimberly Rebel; three brothers, Scott, Skylar and Spencer, all of New Salem; two sisters, Jackie and Jenny, both of New Salem; his grandparents, George and Anita Messer, Richardton, and Frank and Pauline Rebel, Hebron; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. R. Lyle Luttrell
WASHBURN -- R. Lyle Luttrell, 78, longtime Washburn businessman, died Aug. 2, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Washburn, with the Revs. Mary-Lee Lint and Phil Lint officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn, with military rites by Washburn American Legion Post No. 12.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Honorary pallbearer will be all members of the North Dakota State American Legion Band and Washburn American Legion Post No. 12.

Ross Lyle Luttrell was born Sept. 25, 1918, at Minneapolis to Ross W. and Hulda (Jensen) Luttrell. The Luttrell family moved to Watford City when Lyle was 11 years old. He attended school there and graduated in 1936. He worked in Dixon's Gamble Store in Watford City and later was part owner of a grocery store in Maddock. He married Jean Schulz, the daughter of Gladys and Emanuel Schulz, on April 3, 1942, at Washburn. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1942 to February 1946. He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal. After his discharge he joined his father-in-law in operating a family general store which he later renamed Prairie House Furniture located on Main Street in Washburn. His brother-in-law, Phil Schulz, became a partner in the business and they opened a Speed Wash Laundry in what is now Roehrich's Our Own Hardware. Lyle retired in 1984.

Lyle was very active in his community. He was a 50-year member and past commander of Washburn American Legion Post No, and 50-year member and past president of Washburn Lions. he served on the city commission and held one term as mayor. He was a 50-year member and past master of the Fellowship Lodge No. 122 of Washburn and past president of Washburn Jaycees. He had served as clerk of Washburn School Board for several years. Lyle was chairman of Washburn's Diamond Jubilee in 1957 and co-chairman of Washburn's 90th celebration. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church. His happiest times were those spent with his children and grandchildren. He loved music and played trombone in the Bismarck Elks Band and North Dakota State Legion Band. He organized a Dixieland band, named the Basin City Eight, along with Orv Holtan, Russ Elvrum and John Burgum and other friends in the area.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Hillerud, Washburn; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Lyle ``Skip" and Marilyn, Longmont, Colo., Phil, Sonoma, Calif., and Stuart and Marilee, Kennewick, Wash.; four granddaughters, Lori and Kim Luttrell, Kay Christopher and Amy Luttrell; three grandsons, Jack Christopher, and Jeff, Andrew and Matt Luttrell; four step-granddaughters, Steph Holtz, and Samantha, Suzann and Jill Hillerud; one sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Dr. Harry McGee, Omaha, Neb.; one sister-in-law, Alma Luttrell, Watford City; one brother-in-law and his wife, Phil and Dorothy Schulz, Washburn; one step-sister and her husband, Dorothy and Ralph Steinstra, Half-Moon-Bay, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Cora; one brother, Richard; and one son-in-law, Kenneth Christopher.
