Myrtle Carrie Larson was born April 3, 1899, in Dickey, LaMoure County, to Christian and Helena (Schmoker) Larson. She spent her early childhood there, graduating from LaMoure High School. After attending Valley City State College, she taught for six years. On Nov. 3, 1920, she married George W. Cunningham of Grand Rapids. They lived on the Cunningham farm, on the banks of the James River for several years, before moving to Oakes, and subsequently to LaMoure. They spent one year at Steele managing the old G.P. Hotel, then returning to Grand Rapids. In 1947, they moved to Washburn, where Myrtle taught for a few years, and then was employed at the Washburn Leader. When they moved to Bismarck in 1964 she accepted a position as proofreader at the Bismarck Tribune, retiring in 1970.

Being a pianist, Myrtle lent her talents to whatever parish the family attended. After the death of her husband in 1968, she continued to reside alone until she moved in with her daughter, Genevieve Richards, in 1986. The past year she has been a resident of The Terrace, 900 Bowen Ave., until she was hospitalized earlier in August.

With the death of her husband, she became the symbolic matriarch of her family of four sons and one daughter. Her greatest enjoyment was to be surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Uniquely, all of the children lived in Bismarck these past 11 years until last fall, when David moved to Fargo. Blessed with keen mental faculties until the very end, Myrtle continued to keep abreast of current events and could readily discuss any civic or political controversy astutely. Her greatest legacy to her children was her untiring efforts, under the harsh conditions of the '30s and '40s, to raise her family in a decent home and give them a proper education. The sacrifices she made toward this endeavor were endless. Her faith in God and great sense of humor boded her well in accomplishing this.

She is survived by one daughter, Genevieve Richards; four sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Juleen Cunningham, Robert and Marilyn Cunningham, Doug and Elaine Cunningham, all of Bismarck, and David and Kay Cunningham, Fargo; 15 grandchildren, Mark Cunningham, Steven Cunningham, Greg Cunningham, Bismarck, Michael Cunningham, Charlton, Maryland, Patrick Cunningham, Sedro Woolley, Wash., Stephanie Aguirre, Jacksonville, Ore., Susan Edwards, Farmington, N.M., Judy Kalainov, Steele, George Cunningham, Irvine, Calif., Dr. Paul Richards, Louisville, Colo., Ann Sommers, Chanhassen, Minn., John Cunningham, Baytown, Texas, Julie Kay Cunningham-Chapman, Fargo, Elizabeth Vought, Lawton, Okla., and Tim Cunningham, East Hampstead, N.H.; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and one sister.

At her request, her body has been donated to the University of North Dakota Medical School, Grand Forks, with cremation taking place within two years. The family prefers memorials to the God's Child Project, P.O. Box 1573, Bismarck.
