MORRISTOWN, S.D. -- Ronald Ray Nehl, 43, Payson, Ariz., formerly of Morristown, died of a stroke, Sept. 26, 1996, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Watauga, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his father, Ted, Morristown; three brothers, Theo, Helena, Mont., Kurt, Osh Kosh, Neb., and Bill, Atlanta, Ga.; and two sisters, Penny Rinderneck, Morristown, and Roxann Glines, Lemmon. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon)

James Schedel
James Schedel, 62, 1119 University Drive, Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1997, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Joel Scherer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be noon-9 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Jim was born Jan. 2, 1935, in New Salem, the son of Charles and Agnes (Joersz) Schedel. He was raised and educated in New Salem and graduated from New Salem High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. He then attended Bismarck State College and Minot State University. Jim married Myrna Eisenbarth on Oct. 23, 1959, in Minot. They moved to Bismarck in 1960, and James worked for Central Bottling Co. for 17 years. In 1980, he went to work for Melroe, and retired in 1990.

He enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna; one daughter, Jill Schedel, Grand Forks; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Scott and Ellen and their children, Michael and Kelsie, all of Aurora, Colo., Todd and Susan, Carlsbad, Calif., and Ross, Minneapolis; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty and Jerry Haider, Billings, Mont., and Inez Gray, Glendive, Mont.; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wallace and Fae, Lewistown, Mont., Dean and Lila, and Norm and Cindy, all of Three Forks, Mont.

Verda Cathers
WILLISTON -- Verda Cathers, 80, Williston, died Dec. 12, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church, Williston, with the Rev. Ross Reinhiller officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m. today at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Verda was born on March 15, 1917, to Dale and Mabel Amsbaugh at Howard. She was raised and educated on the family farm and attended school at Hanks, Twin Lakes and Williston. She graduated from Williston High School in 1935. She married Charles Wegley on Sept. 12, 1936. Together they lived in Williston and raised nine children. They divorced in 1972. She married J.N. "Jack" Quick in 1975. Jack died in 1981. She was married to Merlin Cathers on Nov. 23, 1984.

Together they enjoyed bingo, gardening, and spending time relaxing at their cabin at Blacktail Dam.

Throughout her life, Verda was a member of Rebeccas, Toastmistress Club, Garden Club, Homemakers, Women of the Moose and United Methodist Churchwomen. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin, Williston; her children, Charlotte Hedrick and her husband, Weldon, Purcell, Okla., Gene, Williston, Verona Lechler and her husband, Gerald, Beach and Bismarck, Steven Wegley and his wife, Mary, Williston, Madelon Austby and her husband, Gene, Rhame, Keith Wegley and his wife, Vicky, Missoula, Mont., and Karen McFarlin, Williston; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Earl Amsbaugh, Fergus Falls, Minn., Douglas Amsbaugh, Rapid City, S.D., and Dean Amsbaugh, Plymouth, Minn.; and one sister, Lois Sletten, Great Falls, Mont. Kathryn Iverson
WILLISTON -- Kathryn Iverson, 95, Williston, died Dec. 12, 1997, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Westview Cemtery, southewest of Williston.

She is survived by one daughter, Agnes Highland, Edmonds, Wash.; and one son, Gene, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Allen Gorden
KILLDEER -- Allen W. Gorden, 82, Killdeer, formerly of Wilton, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Further arrangements are pending with Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.

Lee Reiser
TURTLE LAKE -- Lee A. Reiser Sr., 75, rural Turtle Lake, died Dec. 13, 1997, in the Turtle Lake hospital after an extended illness. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Norman Paskowsky officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery, with military rites provided by Turtle Lake American Legion Post.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Honorary pallbearers are all of Lee's grandchildren.

Lee Alton Reiser was born April 17, 1922, at rural Turtle Lake, to John L. and Frances (Bryson) Reiser. He grew up on his parents' farm south of Turtle Lake where he attended rural school at Veeder Township. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to October 1945, and served overseas in the Pacific. After his discharge, he married Violet Bauer on Jan. 2, 1946, in McClusky. They made their home in Turtle Lake and Lee farmed and ranched with his father and brother. In 1949, they moved into the Reiser homestead 2[1/2] miles south of Turtle Lake. Viola died on May 22, 1988. Lee remained on the farm and was still active in the farming operation.

He enjoyed hunting as a hobby. He was a lifetime member of N.D. Firemans Association, member and past chief of the rural Turtle Lake Fire Department, lifetime member of Turtle Lake American Legion Post, past board member of Turtle Lake Equity Elevator, and past council member at Trinity Lutheran Church of Turtle Lake.

He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and David Mertz, Bismarck, Judy and Gary Christensen, Fort Worth, Texas, and Betty and Jerry Miller, Turtle Lake; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lee Jr. and Randee, Hazen, Jeff and Lisa, Bismarck, and Jerry and Debbie, Turtle Lake; his grandchildren, Jamie, Tracy, Angie and Josh Mertz, Theresa, Travis, Lisa, Justin and Dylan Miller, Brandon, Christopher, Amanda, Jasen, Kara, Kristine, Matthew, Nicole and Natalie Reiser, Brock Hansen and McKenzie Rebel; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Leo and Leota, Turtle Lake, Reuben and Noma, Littleton, Colo., and Earl and Eleanor, Coeur D' Alene, Idaho. Elsie Oliver
MCCLUSKY -- Elsie Oliver, 102, McClusky, died Dec. 12, 1997, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, McClusky. Burial will be in McClusky City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today, and 10 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, both at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.

Elsie Prince was born on March 24, 1895, in Birmingham, Mich., to Fred and Nellie (Leach) Prince. In 1905, the family moved to North Dakota and homesteaded in the Johns Lake area southwest of McClusky. She grew up and attended school there. She married Hubert H. Oliver on Nov. 15, 1913, in McClusky. They lived in the McClusky area most of their married life. During their retirement, they spent the winter months in Arizona and Florida. Her husband died on Sept. 2, 1985. She moved to the Bismarck Baptist Home in November of 1989.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and its ladies aid in McClusky. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary, McClusky, and was a Gold Star Mother. She was also a lifetime member of Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of Busy Bees Homemaker Club in Pickardsville area and thoroughly enjoyed the loving relationships she shared with all.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lorraine and Amidon Triebwasser, McClusky; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 22 great great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred Prince, Portland, and Orlyne Prince, Bemidji, Minn.; two sisters, Marie Lindell, Orlando, Fla., and Isobel Masterson, Minneapolis; and one daughter-in-law, Maeolla Oliver, Tigard, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Harley, in 1988, and Glen in 1945 during World War II; four brothers, Vern, Earl, Howard and Paul; and two sisters, Pearl and Bethel. (Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky)

Violet Fetzer
GARRISON -- Violet Fetzer, 66, Garrison, died Dec. 14, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison. Further arrangements are pending with Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

David Vogel
David A. Vogel, 82, Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Steele nursing home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

David was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Underwood, the son of Frank and Luella (Larson) Vogel. He graduated from Coleharbor High School in 1932 and the University of North Dakota in 1938. He served in the United States Army in England and Germany during World War II. He was discharged as a captain while still in Germany and was employed as a military government officer at Wiesbaden, Germany, until returning to North Dakota in 1948. He married Katherine C. Leo of Portland, Maine, at Baltimore, Md. on March 1, 1948. He was employed as a general agent by Provident Life Insurance Co. in Bismarck until his retirement in 1979.

He was an avid pilot, hunter and golfer.

He was a member of American Legion, a life member of Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

He is survived by his wife, Kay; three brothers, Robert, Grand Forks, Paul, Los Angeles, and William, Salt Lake City; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to University of North Dakota flying team and the Bismarck-Mandan Humane Society. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Anton Zahn
LINTON -- Anton B. Zahn, 77, Linton, died Dec. 13, 1997, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Rev. Jeffrey Zwack officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with full military rites by Linton American Legion Post No. 54.

Visitation will be 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the church, and for one hour prior to services at the church.

Anton was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Linton, the son of Anton and Francica (Volk) Zahn. He attended rural school and worked on various farms west of Linton until 1942, when he entered the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Linton. He married Ann Jahner at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Krassna, on Oct. 8, 1946. They farmed 18 miles west of Linton, until 1960, when they moved into Linton, where he worked at the GTA Elevator. In 1962, he went to work for Frank's Standard Station and later Phil's Standard Station. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Linton American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; three sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Debra, Aaron and Kathy, and Arnie and Jodi, all of Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Anna Laura and Robert Zinke, Worland, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sylvester and Connie, both of Linton; three sisters, Elizabeth Schneider and Mary Zahn, both of Linton; and Frances Bosch, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and three sisters.

Gertrude Vander Laan
Gertrude Vander Laan, 82, Pollock, S.D., died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hope Reformed Church, Westfield. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery, rural Pollock.

She is survived by her husband, John; two sons, Wayne, Mound City, S.D., and Virgil, Redfield, S.D.; one daughter, Mabel Nieuwsma, Herreid, S.D.; two brothers, Peter A. Vander Wal, Redwood City, Calif., and Willis Vander Wal, Pollock; four sisters, Ella Manuel, St. Paul, Minn., Alberta Van Beek, Strasburg, Esther Van Beek, Pollock, Caroline Kroh, New Salem. Lois Erling
Lois Erling, 76, 1216 N. 16th St., Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Wednesday, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be 6-9 tonight, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Lois Johnson was born on Nov. 17, 1921, in Fort Ransom, the daughter of Mark and Julia (Anderson) Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, John; four sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Linda, Bellevue, Neb., Scott and Terri, and Chuck and Tina, all of Bismarck, and John and Kim, Scranton; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Richard Braun, Colorado, Springs, Colo., 14 grandchildren; one brother, Bob; and one sister, Doris Hanson, Fort Ransom.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary Goulet
WALHALLA -- Mary Goulet, 87, Walhalla, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Walhalla nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Walhalla. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Ellen Toews, Walhalla; two sons, David, Walhalla, and Paul, Billings, Mont.; three sisters, Rose Johnson, Walhalla, Mabel Frank, Stillwater, Minn., and Loretta Schlucter, Grand Forks; one brother, Leo Vondal, Dubuque, Iowa. (Nelson Funeral Home, Walhalla)

Anna Schmidt
Anna Schmidt, 83, Bismarck, died Dec. 14, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Church of St. Mary, with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service. A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a prayer service following, all at the funeral home.

Anna Schmidt was born on Oct. 9, 1914, near Napoleon, the daughter of Valentine and Franziska (Silbernagel) Schutt. She was raised and educated in Napoleon. On Nov. 12, 1934, Anna married Vincent Schmidt in Napoleon. They moved to Bismarck in 1944, where she resided until her death. Vincent died in Bismarck in 1985.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altar Society, Eagles, and Eagles Auxiliary, and V.F.W.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph L. and Patricia Schmidt, Renton, Wash.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Fran and Robert Boehm, Mandan, Mae and Eugene Yantzer, Gig Harbor, Wash., Ellie and Richard Stroh, Mandan, and Patty and Daryl Roberson, Yakima, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Barbara Kuntz, Napoleon, Frances Renner, Wisconsin, Veronica Glatt and Julie Mastel, both of Bismarck, Bergetta McCloskey, Riverdale; and one sister-in-law, Maggie Schutt, Strasburg. Violet Westman
GARRISON -- Violet Westman, 82, Garrison, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Garrison nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, LoAnn Jorgensen, McClusky; three sons, Donald and Gordon, both of Garrison, and Wayne, Underwood; and six sisters, Lillian Kinn, Coleharbor, Ethel Swanson, Washburn, Georgine Gullickson and Luella Fast, both of Underwood, Bernice Schauer, Sheboygan, Wis., and Delores Schoonover, Mandan. C. James Raaum
CASSELTON -- C. James "Jim" Raaum, 54, Casselton, died Dec. 11, 1997, in a Fargo hospital from a brain aneurysm. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Grenora, with the Rev. Roy Hammerling officiating. Burial will be in Grenora Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today, at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Jim was born on July 10, 1943, to Clarence and Bernice (Thornstad) Raaum in Williston. He was raised in Zahl and graduated from Grenora High School. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Zahl.

He married Vera Ross on June 27, 1964, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Grenora. They have four sons and three daughters-in-law, Bryan James and Kelly, and their son, Joel, Frisco, Texas, Bruce Ross and Care' and their girls, Grace, Annika, and Elli, all of Grand Junction, Colo., Bradley Clarence and Tera, Lake Dallas, Texas, and Jason Carlton, Casselton.

Jim worked in the banking industry for more than 35 years. He began his career with American State Bank in Williston, and worked for the Bank of Kirkwood Plaza and Metropolitan Federal in Bismarck.

He remained active in the churches he attended in service as treasurer, teacher, council member and choir member. He was currently president of First State Bank of Casselton. He valued his customers and the professional friendships he made in his work.

He was an avid follower of North Dakota State University athletics. Three of his sons have graduated from NDSU and Jason will graduate in 1998. He enjoyed fishing, especially salmon trips on the west coast. Like his father, he pitched horseshoes. He was a committee member of the American Legion baseball program in Bismarck. He spent many summer days following his sons' basebal games. He looked forward to traveling to see his children and grandchildren. He liked visiting over coffee and was always quick to laugh with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife and children; his mother; one brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Candance, Williston; one sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Brent Zavalney, Langdon; and his grandchildren.

Jim will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.
