Verda Cathers
WILLISTON -- Verda Cathers, 80, Williston, died Dec. 12, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Faith United Methodist Church, Williston, with the Rev. Ross Reinhiller officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services at the church today.

Verda was born on March 15, 1917, to Dale and Mabel Amsbaugh at Howard. She was raised and educated on the family farm and attended school at Hanks, Twin Lakes and Williston. She graduated from Williston High School in 1935. She married Charles Wegley on Sept. 12, 1936. Together they lived in Williston and raised nine children. They divorced in 1972. She married J.N. "Jack" Quick in 1975. Jack died in 1981. She married Merlin Cathers on Nov. 23, 1984.

Together they enjoyed bingo, gardening and spending time relaxing at their cabin at Blacktail Dam.

Throughout her life, Verda was a member of Rebeccas, Toastmistress Club, Garden Club, Homemakers, Women of the Moose and United Methodist Churchwomen. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Merlin, Williston; her children, Charlotte Hedrick and her husband, Weldon, Purcell, Okla., Gene, Williston, Verona Lechler and her husband, Gerald, Beach/Bismarck, Steven Wegley and his wife, Linda, Williston, Myron Wegley and his wife, Cheryl, Butte, Mont., Michael Wegley and his wife, Mary, Williston, Madelon Austby and her husband, Gene, Rhame, Keith Wegley and his wife, Vicky, Missoula, Mont., and Karen McFarlin, Williston; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Earl Amsbaugh, Fergus Falls, Minn., Douglas Amsbaugh, Rapid City, S.D., and Dean Amsbaugh, Plymouth, Minn.; and one sister, Lois Sletten, Great Falls, Mont. Allen Gorden
KILLDEER -- Allen W. Gorden, 82, Killdeer, and formerly of Wilton, died Dec. 13, 1997, in the Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery, rural Wilton, with military rites provided by Wilton American Legion Post.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Allen William Gorden was born Feb. 9, 1915, at rural Wilton, in Burleigh County, to Gustav and Christine Gorden. He grew up on his parent's farm southeast of Wilton, where he attended rural school. As a young man he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. for one year in Arkansas. He then returned to North Dakota to farm southeast of Wilton.

He married Dorothy L. Wilson on Nov. 8, 1941, at Bismarck. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 1942 until December 1945. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. After his discharge, he returned to Wilton and they purchased a farm south of Wilton, where he was a small grain farmer and also had a hog operation.

After 26 years, he retired in 1972, due to his failing health. They moved to Idaho, and then in 1992, they moved to Dickinson, to make their home near their son -- Myron. Later that year, Allen and Dorothy became residents of Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer.

He enjoyed hobbies of hunting, fishing and raising a garden.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Myron and Corliss, Dickinson, and James and Sheri, Spokane, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, Jalena, JoAnna, Aric, Andrea, Kevin, Amy, D.J., Meaghan, Lynea, and Kristen; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Justin and Donovan. Dolores Feist
Dolores A. Feist, 63, Bismarck, died Dec. 14, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be at noon, at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a prayer vigil. Visitation will also be for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Dolores was born May 19, 1934, in Strasburg, to John N. and Kathryn (Ehli) Ternes. She attended Strasburg High School and graduated in 1953. She married William Feist on Oct. 25, 1955, in Strasburg. They were married for 42 years and own and operate Feist Jewelry in Bismarck.

Dolores enjoyed spending time with people. She especially enjoyed her time with her family and grandchildren, who will dearly miss her.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; one daughter and son-in-law, Dorinda and Jeff Eckroth, Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Lynn, Patrick and Carla, and David and Renee, all of Bismarck; four grandchildren, Jared Feist, Billy, Bridget and Nicole Eckroth; her mother, Katie Ternes, Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Mike Zainhofsky, Bismarck; one brother, Arthur A. Ternes, Bismarck; and also many nieces and newphews.

She is preceded in death by her father, John N. Ternes; her sister, Antonia Ternes; and her granddaughter, Rebeca Eckroth. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Millie Dickson
Millie D. Dickson, 92, formerly of 203 W. Bowen St., Bismarck, died Dec. 14, 1997, in the Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Hensel Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday, and until service time on Thursday, both at the funeral home.

Millie D. Nitschke was born Aug. 5, 1905 in Gackle, the daughter of August and Theresa (Quast) Nitschke. She was raised and educated in the Gackle area. At an early age, Millie's mother died and she quit school to raise the younger children. Millie married Sandy A. Dickson on July 11, 1920, in Steele. They lived and farmed in the Braddock and Kintyre area. Sandy died in October of 1963.

Millie enjoyed sewing, crocheting and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Sandy L. and Joanne, Fairview, Mont.; five grandsons, Darc Dickson, Williston, Robert Dickson, Richard Dickson and Alex Dickson, all of Bismarck, and Ken Krueger, California; one granddaughter, Tina Schreurs, Ipswich, S.D., 18 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both parents; two daughters, Gladys Dickson and Thelma Krueger; her husband, Sandy A.; three sisters; one brother; one half-brother; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Violet Ketterling
WISHEK -- Violet Ketterling, 61, Wishek, died Dec. 14, 1997, in the Wishek nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Jodi Waugness officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Wishek.

Violet Bader was born March 16, 1936, southwest of Wishek, the daughter of Anton H. and Lydia (Gall) Bader. She received her elementary education in the local rural school southwest of Wishek, where she grew to womanhood in the vicinity where she helped on the family farm.

She and Walter R. Ketterling were married Sept. 8, 1957, at Wishek. They made their home on his parents' farm north of Wishek, and in 1962, he took over the ownership. In 1980, they moved into Wishek, where she worked at the Boschee Motel until January 1983, when she began working at the Wishek Hospital until January 1997, when she retired due to ill health.

She was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Wishek.

She is survived by her husband, Walter; her children, Lawrence and Elvira, Lehr, LaVonne and Richard Lewis, Fergus Falls, Minn., Darlene and Paul Fritz, Marshall Islands, Richard and Charlotte, Wishek, and Norma and Randy Hahne, Ashley; two brothers and three sisters, Leo and Betty Bader, Lansing, Mich., Delores and Ray Zimmerman, Lehr, Cliff Bader, Aberdeen, S.D., Eva and Margetus Schwind, Fargo, and Alma and Don Werth, Fargo.

She was preceded in death by her father; and one sister, Florence. (Haut Funeral Home, Jamestown)

Irma Markley
Irma Irene Markley, 84, Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1997, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wes Gerber officiating.

Irma was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Beulah, the daughter of Nick and Lydia (Bauer) Barbie. Her family then moved to Bismarck where she attended grade school and graduated from Bismarck High School. She married Arlie Markley of Bismarck on July 17, 1941, in Helena, Mont. Following their marriage, they returned to Bismarck to reside.

She enjoyed her life as a homemaker, taking care of her family, house and flowers. She also enjoyed going on cruises.

She is survived by her husband, Arlie; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Patrick Hallock; her grandchildren, Mark and Patricia Hallock; and one sister, Grace Wolitarsky.

he was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Alice, Caroline, and Natalie; and four brothers, Otto, John, Nicky and Donald.

Lois Erling
Lois Erling, 76, 1216 N. 16th St., Bismarck, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Wednesday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a prayer service will be said at 7 tonight.

Lois Johnson was born on Nov. 17, 1921, in Fort Ransom, the daughter of Mark and Julia (Anderson) Johnson.

She is survived by her husband, John; four sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Linda, Bellevue, Neb., Scott and Terri, and Chuck and Tina, all of Bismarck, and John and Kim, Stanton; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Richard Braun, Colorado, Springs, Colo., 14 grandchildren; one brother, Bob, Athol, Idaho; and one sister, Doris Hanson, Fort Ransom.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to American Cancer Society.

Frank Grinsteinner
Frank Grinsteinner, 37, Morton, Texas, formerly of Halliday, died Dec. 8, 1997, in a work-related accident. Services were held Dec. 11, 1997, in Morton.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila; three sons, Erik, Joshua, and Dustin, all at home; his mother, Rose Grinsteinner, Dickinson; four brothers, Leonard, Richard and Tommy, all of Morton, Texas, and Jacob, Dickinson; and six sisters, Mary Smith, Aberdeen, S.D., Alice Grinsteinner and Clara Privatsky, both of Bismarck, Elizabeth Fischer, Devils Lake, Catherine Genz, San Antonio, Texas, and Susan Akins, Leveland, Texas.

Violet Fetzer
GARRISON -- Violet Fetzer, 66, Garrison, died Dec. 14, 1997, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, LeeRoy; four daughters, Lorra Andrews, Dorothy Schmidt and Vickie Fetzer, all of Garrison, and Shelli Ekstrom, Minot; four sisters, Ruth Fetzer and Phyllis, both of Garrison, Irene Sayler, West Fargo, and Lois Whitely; and two brothers, Lyle and John Hintz. Ruth Hansen-Renfro
Ruth Hansen-Renfro, 68, Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of Esmond, died Dec. 8, 1997, in a Scottsdale, Ariz., hospital. Services were held Dec. 11, 1997, in Scottsdale. Burial will be later in Vasa Lutheran Cemetery, rural Esmond.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph T. Renfro III, Phoenix, and John Renfro, Huntington Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Ann Baugh, Phoenix; one granddaughter, Alyssa Sorge; one sister, Ann Vaaler, Phoenix; and one brother, Walter Hansen, Esmond. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

Edna Anderson
VALLEY CITY -- Edna Anderson, 69, Valley City, died Dec. 13, 1997, in a Valley City nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Valley City. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Valley City.

She is survived by her husband, Monroe; three daughters, Vicki Colis, Bismarck, Linette Kratochvil, Lanking, and Bonnie King, Austin, Texas; two sons, Gary, Dazey, and Kurt, Cody, Wyo.; and one brother, Edward Holcomb, Rapid City, S.D. (Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City)

Lucille Gefroh
MINNEWAUKAN -- Lucille M. Gefroh, 84, Minnewaukan, died Dec. 14, 1997, in a Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church, Minnewaukan. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by one brother, Casey Hoffart, Esmond; and two sisters, Katherine Hoffart, Maddock, and Margaret Ebel, Minot. (Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan)

BEACH -- Joseph B. Thompson, 84, Beach, died Dec. 14, 1997, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at First Lutheran Church, Beach. Burial will be in Beach Lutheran Cemetery.

He is survived by three sons, David, Dickinson, and Paul and John, both of Beach; one daughter, Carol Ann, McMinville, Ore., one sister, Dorothy Ingalls, Tulsa, Okla., and one brother, Theodore. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)
