CARSON -- Lloyd Stewart, 70, Carson, died Nov. 20, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Monday, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Carson. Burial will be in Carson Community Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1:30-3:30 p.m. MST Sunday, at First Presbyterian Church, Carson. And for one hour prior to the time of the service on Monday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; four sons, Jeff, Fargo, Syd, Bismarck, Dan, Carson, and Darryl, Bismarck; one daughter, Angel Bares. (Hertz Brothers Funeral Home, New Leipzig)

Rose Wentz
Rose Wentz, 85, Elkhart, Ind., and formerly of Washburn and Mercer, died Nov. 20, 1998, in a South Bend, Ind., hospice. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at First Baptist Church, Mercer. Burial will be in Washburn Baptist Cemetery.

She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Kast, Elkhart, Karen Schulz, Melrose Park, Ill., and Nancy Kelly, Fargo; three sons, Stan Wentz, Fredricksburg, Va., Harlan Wentz, Hitterdal, Minn., and Charles Wentz, Lake Park, Minn.; one brother, Walter Aman, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Esther Bettger, St. Louis Park, Minn. Gottlieb Janke
Gottlieb Janke, 89, Minneapolis, and formerly of Minot, died Nov. 19, 1998, in a Minneapolis hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at Dahlstrom Funeral Chapel, Wishek. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley.

John Faut
HAZEN -- John Faut, 89, Hazen, died Nov. 19, 1998, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Hazen. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; one daughter, Marlene Harrie, Lake Forest, Calif.; two sons, Gerald Faut, Fremont, Calif., and Byron Faut, Hazen; two half-brothers, Carl Kiesz, Bismarck, and Edward Kiesz, Washington; one sister, Helen Kuch, Elgin; and one half-sister, Hulda Swenson, Halliday. Pauline F. Iszler
ELGIN -- Pauline Frey Iszler, 75, Elgin, died Nov. 19, 1998, in a Mott nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She is survived by four sons, Henry Frey, Elgin, Albert Frey, Mott, Chris Frey, Bismarck, and Ruben Frey, Elgin; three daughters, Katherine Wyman, Bowman, Helen Reineke, Elgin, and Wanda Dachtler, Elgin; and one sister, Caroline Koenig, Mandan. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

Eugene Unrath
BEULAH -- Eugene Unrath, 75, Beulah, and formerly of Golden Valley, died Nov. 19, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Norma Forsythe
Norma Forsythe, 72, Lake Park, Minn., and formerly of Bismarck and Minot, died Nov. 20, 1998, at her home. A private memorial service will be held in Orlando, Fla., at a later date.

She is survived by one son, Dan Clausnitzer, Bismarck; two daughters, Darlene Entringer, Orlando, and Nancy Bloom, West Fargo. (Vigen-Wright Funeral Home, Hawley, Minn.)

John Lutz
REGENT -- John Lutz, 85, Regent, died Nov. 19, 1998, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, at Faith Lutheran Church, Regent. Burial will be in Regent Cemetery.

Louise Finzel
DICKINSON -- Louise E. Finzel, 78, Dickinson, died Nov. 19, 1998, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Regent. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Elizabeth Stokke
WILLISTON -- Elizabeth Ruth Stokke, 89, Williston, died Nov. 19, 1998, in a Williston nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at First Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Noretta Totdahl
Noretta Totdahl, 93, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, died Nov. 20, 1998, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending.

Mary Carter
Mary C. Carter, 95, Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan, died Nov. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Weigel Funeral Home Chapel, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert E. Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Mary Martin was born on March 30, 1903, in Thompson, Iowa, the daughter of John Calvin and Mary Ann Caroline (Reidel) Martin. She was raised and educated in Charlson, where her family homesteaded in 1906. She married Fred A. Carter in White Earth in 1919. Mary had been a resident of Mandan since 1988.

She is survived by one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Edward Carter, Mandan; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Fred A. (who died in 1973), her parents; one son; three daughters; five brothers and eight sisters. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Albert E. Anderson
Albert E. Anderson, 91, 929 N. 16th St., Bismarck, died Nov. 19, 1998, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Glencoe Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Ben Dove officiating. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the church.

Albert was born to John and Myrtle (Raygor) Anderson on June 9, 1907, at Alta. He attended Pleasantview School in Steiber Township.

He married Vina Oder, from near Baldwin, on April 4, 1935. They lived in the Baldwin area a few years before moving to their farm southeast of Bismarck where they lived for 40 years. He retired from farming in 1981 at which time they moved to Bismarck. He was a member of the N.D. Gem and Mineral Society and for many years enjoyed his lapidary hobby. He also spent many pleasurable hours working in their vegetable and flower gardens. In recent years he took much pride in the meticulous hand stitching he did on Vina's homemade quilts.

He is survived by his wife, Vina; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Arlene Anderson; one daughter and son-in-law, Arllis and Milton Brown; one daughter-in-law, Luella Anderson, all of Bismarck; seven grandsons, Greg, Mark, Reid, Evan and Kyle Anderson, and Mitch and Barrett Brown; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ralph, Bismarck, and John, Wilton.

He was preceded in death by his son, Albert Jr.; his parents and four sisters. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Joan Estes
Joan R. Estes, 58, Bismarck, died Nov. 19, 1998, in her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jack J. Seville Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

A wake will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at United Tribes Technical College in the James Henry Gymnasium Building.

Joan R. Stone was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Elbowoods, to John Sr. and Hazel (Rowe) Stone. She grew up on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, where she attended school for seven years in Elbowoods, and graduated from Halliday High School. She went on to receive her bachelor of arts degree from Jamestown College and a master of arts from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She was once married to Frank Estes and they had one daughter, Lonna.

Joan dedicated her life to education. At the time of her death she was assistant director of elementary education with the North Dakota State Department of Public Instruction, a position she had held for 10 years. She came to DPI from United Tribes, where she was principal of Theodore Jamerson Elementary School for 13 years. Prior to this, Joan was acting director for Head Start on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation and taught school in Bethal, Ala., Keams Canyon, Ariz., Eagle Butte, S.D., and Fort Yates.

She received many honors for her dedication to education, among them being named Outstanding Indian Administrator by the National Indian School Boards Association, NDIEA Recognition Award in October 1998, a United Tribes Exemplary Award for Excellence at Theodore Jamerson Elementary.

Joan was a member of several professional organizations: The National Indian Education Association, the National Elementary Principal's Association, North Dakota Indian Education Association, North Dakota Education Association and National Association for the Education of Young Children. Joan was also known for her work as the coordinator of the North Dakota State Spelling Bee, Math Counts, Home Education Program, many school improvement teams, Youth Citizen League and many too numerous to name.

Joan was involved in many areas of the community where she had been on the board of directors of the Sakakawea Girl's Council, and for many years she also served on the board of directors for Charles Hall Youth Services. She was president of the Bismarck/Mandan North American Indian Women's Association, and served as an advisory board of The Casey Family Program. Joan dedicated much of her time to the church, where she sang in the choir, served on the board of deacons and the stewardship board.

Joan will be remembered by family and friends for probably being the biggest Bismarck Demons and Chicago Bulls basketball fan.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lonna and Jay Olson, Fargo; her mother, Hazel Stone, Richardton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ardella and Emmett Schmitz, Denver, and Cleo and Arnold Charging, White Shield; one brother and sister-in-law, John Jr. and Connie, Twin Buttes; her nieces and nephews, Erin Schneider, Mark Schmitz and Kelly Mapes, Colorado, George Charging, New Mexico, Denise Bercier, Anita Charging-Baird, Arnold Charging Jr., Brent Charging, and Brady and Stacy Stone, all of North Dakota, and Clarice Hudson, Washington State, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Stone Sr.; and her grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to American Institute for Cancer Research -- Cancer Memorial Donations. Please send memorials to Lonna Olson, 2651 36th Ave. S.W., No. 103, Fargo, N.D. 58104. They will be forwarded in Joan's name. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Perpetua Kautzman
Perpetua Kautzman, 84, formerly of Mandan, died Nov. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, with the Rev. Jerome Kautzman officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters and Christian Mothers rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Monday. A parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Perpetua was born March 10, 1914, in Crown Butte, the daughter of Joseph and Minnie (Boehm) Gratz. She was raised and educated in the Crown Butte area. On Oct. 6, 1931, she married Harry H. Kautzman in Crown Butte. Harry died Dec. 13, 1991. Perpetua was employed as a cook at the Knights of Columbus and Moose Club.

She was a former member of St. Joseph Circle and Women of the Moose.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Patty, and Thomas and Darlene, all of Mandan; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Irene and Howard Job, Doris Johnson, Debbie and Paul Maddock, and Jolene and Dave Stuber, all of Bismarck, Eleanor Engel, Mandan, and Jane and Randy LaCroix, Decatur, Ark.; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Katie Butka, Sidney, Mont., Rose McDonald, Peoria, ill., and Tillie and Pete Kopp, Mandan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her parents; one son, Raymond; three brothers, Steve, Adam and Ralph Gratz; and three sisters, Ida Knoll, Alice Olheiser and Maggie Gratz.

Noretta Totdahl
Noretta Totdahl, 93, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died Nov. 20, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn.

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue one hour before services Monday.

Noretta was born Feb. 5, 1905, in Rochester, Minn., the youngest of seven children of Mary and Thomas Cunningham. The family moved to North Dakota in 1907, and homesteaded on a farm south of Scranton. After her father's death, the family moved to Scranton in 1919. She attended Dickinson Normal School and graduated from Valley City Teachers College in 1929. She then taught at Scranton Public School until 1937. She married Ancher O. Totdahl, June 3, 1937. They taught school at Pettibone from 1937-1941, and in Beulah from 1941 until her retirement. In 1961, they moved to Bismarck.

Mr. Totdahl died in 1973. She remained in her home until 1996, when she entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her nieces, Mabel Harder, Suisun City, Calif., Connie and her husband, Charles DeMaria, Atherton, Calif., Ruby Falk, Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Theo Cannon, Milpitas, Calif.

Melvin Kennedy
Melvin T. Kennedy, 67, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., formerly of Jamestown, died Nov. 19, 1998, in Lake Havasu City. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Lake Havasu City.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; six sons, Richard, Baxter, Minn., Kenneth, West Fargo, Mike, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Thomas and John, both of Navato, Calif., and Edgar, Lake Havasu City; five daughters, Vicki Hoffer, Tappen, Bonnie Dewald, Jamestown, Laurie Abeyta, Chino Hills, Calif., Holly Espinoza, Lake Havasu City, and Sharlene Vasquez, Lake Havasu City; one sister, Lila Rowell, Live Oak, Texas; and two brothers, Jim, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Eugene, Big River, Calif. Carol Bergquist
Carol L. Bergquist, 73, 1017 East Highland Acres Road, Bismarck, died Nov. 19, 1998, in her home peacefully surrounded by her family after a three year battle with cancer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Rick Fossum and Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be held at 3 p.m. at Menoken Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

John Gress
DICKINSON -- John Anton Gress, 77, Dickinson, died Nov. 18, 1998, in Dickinson. Services will be held at 9 a.m. MST Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Richardton, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by four sons, Daniel, Tampa, Fla., Larry, Delran, N.J., Fran, Dickinson, and Gerald, Richardton; two daughters, Rosie Nilsen, Neverdal, Norway, and Barbara Gress, Richardton; one brother, Tony, Portland, Ore.; and one sister, Rose Schnell, Portland. (Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

MOTT -- Vivian L. Roster, 77, Mott, died of cancer Nov. 19, 1998, in her home. Private services will be held.
